Inflammatory Biomarkers And Subclinical Atherosclerosis In African-American Women With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Sle), Edith M. Williams, Carlos J. Crespo, Joan Dorn
Inflammatory Biomarkers And Subclinical Atherosclerosis In African-American Women With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Sle), Edith M. Williams, Carlos J. Crespo, Joan Dorn
Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Women with lupus are at increased risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Previous studies of atherosclerosis in SLE have not been representative of the minority groups most affected by lupus and its complications. Therefore, a study of 41 lupus cases and 83 controls was conducted to investigate the relationship between carotid atherosclerosis and inflammation in African-American women. Participation consisted of a questionnaire, physical examination, fasting blood draw, and ultrasound of the carotid arteries. There were observed differences between cases and controls with regard to carotid intima media thickness (IMT) and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, although few reached statistical significance. Tumor …
Nutrient Distribution Effects From Freshwater Discharge At Franklin Lock And Dam (S-79) In 2005 And 2006 On The Caloosahatchee Estuary And San Carlos Bay, Fort Myers, Florida, Kristan M. Uhlenbrock
Nutrient Distribution Effects From Freshwater Discharge At Franklin Lock And Dam (S-79) In 2005 And 2006 On The Caloosahatchee Estuary And San Carlos Bay, Fort Myers, Florida, Kristan M. Uhlenbrock
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Nutrient distribution correlates with discharge of freshwater from Franklin Lock and Dam structure (S-79) by delivery into the Caloosahatchee Estuary (CE) and out of this area, including the surrounding San Carlos Bay (SCB) and adjacent West Florida Shelf. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution of nutrients along the CE waterway and illustrates the effects high freshwater discharge from S-79 has on the coastal and offshore environments, providing a potential source of nutrient input. This study consisted of a 7-station transect monitored biweekly from April 2005 thru August 2006 for nutrients, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, and salinity, along …
Memory And Musical Expectation For Tones In Cultural Context, Meagan E. Curtis, Jamshed J. Bharucha
Memory And Musical Expectation For Tones In Cultural Context, Meagan E. Curtis, Jamshed J. Bharucha
Dartmouth Scholarship
WE EXPLORED HOW MUSICAL CULTURE SHAPES ONE'S listening experience.Western participants heard a series of tones drawn from either the Western major mode (culturally familiar) or the Indian thaat Bhairav (culturally unfamiliar) and then heard a test tone. They made a speeded judgment about whether the test tone was present in the prior series of tones. Interactions between mode (Western or Indian) and test tone type (congruous or incongruous) reflect the utilization of Western modal knowledge to make judgments about the test tones. False alarm rates were higher for test tones congruent with the major mode than for test tones congruent …
Germania-Based Sol-Gel Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coatings For Capillary Microextraction, Li Fang
Germania-Based Sol-Gel Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Coatings For Capillary Microextraction, Li Fang
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
For the first time, germania-based hybrid organic-inorganic sol-gel materials were developed for analytical sample preparation and chromatographic separation. Being an isostructural analog of silica (SiO2), germania (GeO2) is compatible with silica network. This structural similarity, which is reflected by the relative positions of germanium and silicon in the periodic table, stimulated our investigation on the development of germania-based sol-gel hybrid organic-inorganic coatings for analytical applications.
Sol-gel sorbents and stationary phases reported to date are predominantly silica-based. Poor pH stability of silica-based materials is a major drawback. In this work, this problem was addressed through development of …
Long-Distance Delivery Of Bacterial Virulence Factors By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Outer Membrane Vesicles, Jennifer M. Bomberger, Daniel P. Maceachran, Bonita A. Coutermarsh, Siying Ye, George A. O'Toole, Bruce A. Stanton, Frederick M. Ausubel
Long-Distance Delivery Of Bacterial Virulence Factors By Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Outer Membrane Vesicles, Jennifer M. Bomberger, Daniel P. Maceachran, Bonita A. Coutermarsh, Siying Ye, George A. O'Toole, Bruce A. Stanton, Frederick M. Ausubel
Dartmouth Scholarship
Bacteria use a variety of secreted virulence factors to manipulate host cells, thereby causing significant morbidity and mortality. We report a mechanism for the long-distance delivery of multiple bacterial virulence factors, simultaneously and directly into the host cell cytoplasm, thus obviating the need for direct interaction of the pathogen with the host cell to cause cytotoxicity. We show that outer membrane–derived vesicles (OMV) secreted by the opportunistic human pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa deliver multiple virulence factors, including β-lactamase, alkaline phosphatase, hemolytic phospholipase C, and Cif, directly into the host cytoplasm via fusion of OMV with lipid rafts in the host plasma …
Research Choice And Finance In University Bioscience, David E. Ervin, Steven T. Buccola, Hui Yang
Research Choice And Finance In University Bioscience, David E. Ervin, Steven T. Buccola, Hui Yang
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Academic bioscience's rising importance for downstream technology and growing private sector relationships have evoked substantial policy attention. We contribute to the scrutiny by asking how university bioscientists design and finance their research, with particular attention to the mutuality of research portfolio choice and funding success. The analysis requires consideration of other major influences on academic science, including scientific norms, human capital, and institutional environment. Drawing on a national survey of university bioscientists, we find that public financial support encourages more basic investigation and private support encourages more applied investigation. Yet downstream research is only moderately more excludable than upstream. Once …

Biomass And Seed Yields Of Big Bluestem, Switchgrass, And Intermediate Wheatgrass In Response To Manure And Harvest Timing At Two Topographic Positions, Dokyoung Lee, Vance N. Owens, Arvid Boe, Bon-Cheol Koo
Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications
A principle attribute of perennial grasses for biomass energy is the potential for high yields on marginal lands. Objectives of this study were to compare biomass and seed production of intermediate wheatgrass (Thinopyrum intermedium [Host] Barkworth and D.R. Dewey), big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) as affected by harvest timing and manure application on two topographic positions (footslope and backslope). Footslope is the hillslope position that forms the inclined surface at the base of a slope and backslope forms the steepest, middle position of the hillslope. Grasses were harvested for biomass at anthesis …

A Global Architecture For Medical Counter-Measure Preparedness Against Bioviolence, Barry Kellman, Zachary D. Clopton
A Global Architecture For Medical Counter-Measure Preparedness Against Bioviolence, Barry Kellman, Zachary D. Clopton
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
The obstacles to a functioning global infrastructure for bioviolence medical counter-measure (MCM) preparedness in the near future are legion. Naysayers could readily rattle off dozens of reasons why this or that initiative will not work, and they are right. The world is remarkably dysfunctional, and implementation of progressive reform in this context faces near infinite obstructions and frustrations. Moreover, there is scant evidence that global leaders consider such an infrastructure to be among their highest priorities.
The purpose of this article, however, is not to assess the political odds that such an infrastructure will be built soon; it is to …

Diet And Behavior Of Ferruginous Hawks Nesting In Two Grasslands In New Mexico With Differing Anthropogenic Alteration, William Hanlon Keeley
Diet And Behavior Of Ferruginous Hawks Nesting In Two Grasslands In New Mexico With Differing Anthropogenic Alteration, William Hanlon Keeley
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
I analyzed regurgitated pellets, prey remains, and video recordings to describe Ferruginous Hawk (Buteo regalis) diet in two grasslands in New Mexico, USA, the Estancia Valley and the Plains of San Agustin, that differed in anthropogenic alteration. Video monitoring revealed Ferruginous Hawks provisioned nestlings with more biomass than pellet analysis estimates from the same nests. Three mammalian prey species, Botta’s pocket gopher (Thomomys bottae), Gunnison’s prairie dog (Cynomys gunnisoni), and desert cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii)contributed similar proportions to Ferruginous Hawk diet in percent biomass while Botta's pocket gopher dominated diet in percent frequency. …

Introduction: Obesity and morbid obesity, along with their co-morbidities, are impacting the national and international healthcare delivery systems and policy agendas. Bariatric surgery is a dynamic and fast-changing medical and surgical practice designed to mitigate the consequences of 60 million obese adults in the United States alone. Alcohol consumption after gastric bypass surgery presents potential physiological and psychological problems. Purpose: Examine the prevalence and incidence of increased alcohol consumption among a group of post-gastric bypass patients; identify the relationship of the alcohol use with time since surgery, psychosocial issues (depressive symptomatology, anxiety, coping) and demographic variables. Theoretical Framework: Coping serves …
Towards A More Reasonable Approach To Free Will In Criminal Law, Stephen O'Hanlon
Towards A More Reasonable Approach To Free Will In Criminal Law, Stephen O'Hanlon
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
This paper questions criminal law's strong presumption of free will. Part I assesses the ways in which environment, nurture, and society influence human action. Part II briefly surveys studies from the fields of genetics and neuroscience which call into question strong assumptions of free will and suggest explanations for propensities toward criminal activity. Part III discusses other "causes" of criminal activity including addiction, economic deprivation, gender, and culture. In light of Parts I through III, Part IV assesses criminal responsibility and the legitimacy ofpunishment. Part V considers the possibility of determiningpropensity for criminal activity based on assessing causal factors and …
Catching Up: The Need For New York State To Amend Its Juvenile Offender Law To Reflect Psychiatric, Constitutional And Normative National Trends Over The Last Three Decades, Michelle Haddad
Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal
The note argues that New York's Juvenile Offender Law of 1978 is outdated and in need of reform. Enacted in response to a tragic crime, the law shifted juvenile justice from rehabilitation to punishment, allowing children as young as 13 to be tried as adults. However, advancements in psychological understanding of adolescent brain development, constitutional rulings, and international trends emphasize the need for a more nuanced, rehabilitative approach. The note advocates for amending the law to reflect these developments and prioritize individualized consideration of juvenile cases.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the healing effect of Teucrium polium (T. polium) in indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats. METHODS: In the fall of 2007, 250 Sprague-Dawley rats provided by the Shiraz University Laboratory Animal Center were divided into 4 equal groups including control (70 rats), and 3 experimental groups (60 rats each), and each group received different doses of T. polium. Ten rats were used to study the induction of gastric ulcer by indomethacin (25 mg/kg/stat). After 24 hours, their stomachs were evaluated for any mucosal ulcer. The T. polium extract was administered orally, 24 hours after indomethacin administration. In the …

Protein interacting with C kinase 1 (PICK1) is a peripheral membrane protein involved in protein trafficking, a function that has been well characterized in neurons. Here, we report that male mice deficient in PICK1 are infertile and have a phenotype resembling the human disease globozoospermia. The primary defect in the testes of Pick1-knockout mice was fragmentation of acrosomes in the early stages of spermiogenesis. This fragmentation was followed by defects in nuclear elongation and mitochondrial sheath formation, leading to round-headed sperm, reduced sperm count, and severely impaired sperm motility. We found that PICK1 interacted with Golgi-associated PDZ- and coiled-coil motif-containing …

The Rite Of Rhetoric: Cognitive Framing In Technology Law, Chris Riley
The Rite Of Rhetoric: Cognitive Framing In Technology Law, Chris Riley
Nevada Law Journal
This Article examines the use of cognitive framing techniques in litigation in technology law. I offer a model to understand and evaluate the strength of a “framing argument”—consisting of a legal argument, a frame, and a connection between the two—and I identify and analyze framing arguments in four recent technology law cases. I contend that framing arguments play a major role in these cases because technology law is particularly susceptible to them. Ambiguities in the statutes and precedents and ambiguities in the technologies create room for judgments of equity to shape the law. Furthermore, genuine doubt concerning the correct social …

Agents Of (Incremental) Change: From Myra Bradwell To Hillary Clinton, Gwen Hoerr Jordan
Nevada Law Journal
In this Article, the author asserts that after the Civil War, when the race and gender hierarchies that ordered American society were vulnerable, a little-studied collection of activist women lawyers led a law reform movement that established women’s rights incrementally. They were among those thinking about and experimenting with different ways of framing, securing, and enforcing women’s full and equal citizenship rights. Their dual status as lawyers and women shaped their goals and strategies. As lawyers and licensed members of the legal profession, they operated within the conventional institutions of power—lobbying the legislatures to enact new laws and urging judges …
A Qualitative Inquiry Of Conceptualized Heterosexuality And Its Influence On The Counseling Process, Breyan N. Haizlip
A Qualitative Inquiry Of Conceptualized Heterosexuality And Its Influence On The Counseling Process, Breyan N. Haizlip
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
With CACREP's increasing attention to majority cultural group memberships and its influence on trainee self-awareness and the counseling relationship (see CACREP 2001/2009), heterosexually-identified counselors have little or no opportunity to increase awareness of their own sexuality, creating challenges when working with clients of various sexual identities. The purpose of this article is to present a qualitative analysis of conceptualized heterosexuality and its influences on the counseling process. A model of the process by which heterosexually-identified counselors conceptualize their heterosexual identity and its influences the counseling process is proposed. Results suggest that providing counselor trainees an opportunity to explore the relationship …

The Effects Of Elaborative Interrogation And Summarization On Student Comprehension, Retention, And Satisfaction In Online, Self-Paced Instruction, Heather M. Brown
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of two elaboration strategies, elaborative interrogation questioning (EIQ) and summarization, on student comprehension, retention, and satisfaction in a self-paced online environment. There were four treatment groups: (a) Control (no treatment); (b) EIQ only; (c) Summarization only; and (d) EIQ and Summarization. Both undergraduate and graduate students (mean age = 25.84 years) volunteered and completed the study (N=191).
Results revealed a significant interaction between strategy type and age on comprehension. Older participants in the Control and EIQ/Summarization strategy groups comprehended more than the younger participants, and the younger participants in the …
Effects Of Hze Irradiation On Chemical Neurotransmission In Rodent Hippocampus, Mayumi Machida
Effects Of Hze Irradiation On Chemical Neurotransmission In Rodent Hippocampus, Mayumi Machida
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Space radiation represents a significant risk to the CNS (central nervous system) during space missions. Most harmful are the HZE (high mass, highly charged (Z), high energy) particles, e.g. 56Fe, which possess high ionizing ability, dense energy deposition pattern, and high penetrance.
Accumulating evidence suggests that radiation has significant impact on cognitive functions. In ground-base experiments, HZE radiation induces pronounced deficits in hippocampus dependent learning and memory in rodents. However, the mechanisms underlying these impairments are mostly unknown.
Exposure to HZE radiation elevates the level of oxidation, resulting in cell loss, tissue damage and functional deficits through direct ionization …
