Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh Apr 2009

Potential Role Of Micro-Algae On Global Energy Supply, Sage Callaway-Keeley, Stephanie Huynh

Student Research Posters

The most effective ways to reduce CO2 emissions are to improve the energy efficiency of each economic sector and to reduce the cutting of tropical and temperate forests around the world. These options, however, may not fully reach their technical and economic potential due to various political and socioeconomic. The most practical of these is to increase CO2 sinks through photosynthesis in both standing tree biomass and in ocean primary producers. The use of marine algae as CO2 sinks is for large-scale CO2 mitigation: the use of phytoplankton through Fe fertilization and macro algal (kelp) farms, which can be used …

Preparing Students For The College Experience, Stefanos Gialamas, Peggy Pelonis Apr 2009

Preparing Students For The College Experience, Stefanos Gialamas, Peggy Pelonis

Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)

Preparing students for College life and most importantly for life beyond high school is a key challenge for many educators and secondary education institutions. Above all, today more than ever, educators must prepare students for the unknown and the unpredictable; careers not yet known to us, opportunities that we can not imagine, and for a world so different that we have no idea what it will look like in thirty or forty years. Hence some of the questions that arise are as follows: what shall we teach our students? What skills do we expect them to develop; and which processes …

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter Apr 2009

Revisiting The Regulation Debate: The Effect Of Food Marketing On Childhood Obesity, Nicole E. Hunter

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “Despite the widespread concern regarding childhood obesity, there is broad divergence of opinion regarding responsibility for the crisis. Whether the government, food industry, or parents are accountable has become the focus of much debate. Public health groups have attempted various strategies to confront childhood obesity, such as litigation, legislation, and government regulation. While many researchers and advocates agree that government should play an affirmative role with respect to childhood obesity, they are very much divided over what that role should be. For example, although none of these acts has become law, eighty-six bills have been proposed regarding obesity since …

Universal Health Care, American Pragmatism, And The Ethics Of Health Policy: Questioning Political Efficacy, Daniel S. Goldberg Apr 2009

Universal Health Care, American Pragmatism, And The Ethics Of Health Policy: Questioning Political Efficacy, Daniel S. Goldberg

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “This article will explore the conceptual implications of applying ethical critique and analysis to health policy. This is not to imply any reductionist conception of health policy in which ethics is absent. As Deborah Stone and John W. Kingdon both note, policy is fraught with ethical implications, and value prioritization is a sine qua non for health policy. Nevertheless, I wish to suggest that there are some conceptually significant distinctions in thinking of the ethics of health policy as opposed to thinking separately about ethics and about health policy. Moreover, these distinctions themselves are of value, both in thinking …

Avoiding The Derailment Of Wind Power Development: Why Federal Siting Regulations Are Necessary Now For U.S. Development, Nathan Borgford-Parnell Apr 2009

Avoiding The Derailment Of Wind Power Development: Why Federal Siting Regulations Are Necessary Now For U.S. Development, Nathan Borgford-Parnell

PEEL Alumni Scholarship

In the United States and around the globe, governments are responding to climate change and energy security concerns by shifting their energy policies to facilitate the rapid development of renewable energy. Today, wind energy is the fastest growing renewable technology, but in the rush to combat climate change, officials have often ignored another brewing conflict which looms larger with every turbine erected. It is a conflict between two would-be allies, wind developers and wildlife conservationists, which if left unchecked has the potential to derail wind energy development in the United States.

Discovery And Scoring Of Protein Interaction Subnetworks Discriminative Of Late Stage Human Colon Cancer, Rod K. Nibbe, Sanford Markowitz, Lois Myeroff, Rob M. Ewing, Mark R. Chance Apr 2009

Discovery And Scoring Of Protein Interaction Subnetworks Discriminative Of Late Stage Human Colon Cancer, Rod K. Nibbe, Sanford Markowitz, Lois Myeroff, Rob M. Ewing, Mark R. Chance

Faculty Scholarship

We used a systems biology approach to identify and score protein interaction subnetworks whose activity patterns are discriminative of late stage human colorectal cancer (CRC) versus control in colonic tissue. We conducted two gel-based proteomics experiments to identify significantly changing proteins between normal and late stage tumor tissues obtained from an adequately sized cohort of human patients. A total of 67 proteins identified by these experiments was used to seed a search for proteinprotein interaction subnetworks. A scoring scheme based on mutual information, calculated using gene expression data as a proxy for subnetwork activity, was developed to score the targets …

Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Their Personal Growth: A Qualitative Inquiry, Ericka L. Souders Apr 2009

Counselor Trainees' Perceptions Of Their Personal Growth: A Qualitative Inquiry, Ericka L. Souders

Dissertations

Over the past decade there has been increased discussion in the counselor education literature regarding the personal limitations and/or impairments of counselors that may hinder their abilities to provide competent services. Although counseling ethical codes and standards of practice suggest competent counselors are those who demonstrate both professional and personal skills and counselor educators have explored numerous training methods to promote such development, the concern about impaired counselors remains. There is minimal information in the literature that describes how counselors in training develop personal attitudes, skills, and characteristics that may prevent their impairment and facilitate their competency with their clientele. …

The "Accidental Procreation" Argument For Withholding Legal Recognition For Same-Sex Relationships, Edward Stein Apr 2009

The "Accidental Procreation" Argument For Withholding Legal Recognition For Same-Sex Relationships, Edward Stein

Chicago-Kent Law Review

For many years, a common argument made by opponents of same-sex marriage was that marriage crucially involves procreation and, because couples consisting of two people of the same sex simply cannot procreate, therefore, same-sex couples should not be able to marry. While this argument is now widely seen as weak, in its place, a new argument that also involves procreation has emerged that focuses on the claim that different-sex—but not same-sex-couples, can accidentally procreate. Because of this risk of accidental procreation and the associated risk of harm to children who result from accidental procreation, proponents of this argument conclude …
