Nano-Imprinted Thin Films Of Reactive, Azlactone-Containing Polymers: Combining Methods For The Topographic Patterning Of Cell Substrates With Opportunities For Facile Post-Fabrication Chemical Functionalization, Nathaniel J. Fredin, Adam H. Broderick, Maren E. Buck, David M. Lvnn

Chemistry: Faculty Publications

Approaches to the fabrication of surfaces that combine methods for the topographic patterning of soft materials with opportunities for facile, post-fabrication chemical functionalization could contribute significantly to advances in biotechnology and a broad range of other areas. Here, we report methods that can be used to introduce well defined nano- and microscale topographic features to thin films of reactive polymers containing azlactone functionality using nanoimprint lithography (NIL). We demonstrate that NIL can be used to imprint topographic patterns into thin films of poly(2-vinyl-4,4- dimethylazlactone) and a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and 2-vinyl- 4,4-dimethylazlactone using silicon masters having patterns of grooves …

The Preference Of Protein Powders Among Adult Males And Females: A Protein Powder Taste Study, Joshua Manter Apr 2009

The Preference Of Protein Powders Among Adult Males And Females: A Protein Powder Taste Study, Joshua Manter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Protein is essential in one's diet because it is an important component in many organs and tissues throughout the body. Athletes ingest protein in order to stimulate protein synthesis and increase lean muscle mass. In order to assist with obtaining adequate amounts of protein, athletes and bodybuilders purchase supplemental protein in the form of protein powders. Protein metabolism and digestion play key roles in this because if the protein is not metabolized or digested effectively, then those who are wishing to gain fat free mass will not be successful. A high quality protein will be digested, metabolized, and directed towards …

Localized Biliary Ischemia In Patients With Hepatic Arteriovenous Malformations, A Newly Recognized Syndrome Occurring In Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Diagnosis And Management, Rasha Khoury

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The clinical manifestations of hepatic arteriovenous malformations (HAVMs) were elucidated. A review of the literature was undertaken to better understand how HAVMs specifically affect the biliary system. A retrospective review of the 50 patients with HAVMs seen at the Yale University HHT Center was done, including clinical manifestation, intervention and outcome analysis. Of 50 adults with HAVM, median age was 64 (range 17-73) and 84% were female. Initially 74% were classified as Type 1, symptomatic heart failure, 16% as Type 2, portal hypertension, and 10% as Type 3, biliary abnormalities. In Type 1 conversion to Type 3 was associated with …

Carbon Forest Markets And The Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest: Can Market-Based Economic Incentives Save The Forest?, Romulo Silveira Da Rocha Sampaio

Dissertations & Theses

This study is divided into six main chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to situate forests in the global context and providing a detailed description of the Atlantic Rainforest's history, ecological features, geographical and demographical information and its potential contribution to emissions and removals of greenhouse gases. Considering the traditional trend of not valuing ecosystem services, this first chapter introduces the notion of economic incentives to promote forest conservation and regeneration policies highlighting existing market-based approaches. The goal is twofold: first, to compare the Atlantic forest's reality and characteristics with a worldwide deforestation trend; second to provide an understanding of …

The Beetles Of Barbados, West Indies (Insecta: Coleoptera): Diversity, Distribution And Faunal Structure, Stewart Peck

Insecta Mundi

The beetle fauna of the island of Barbados is summarized. It is now known to contain 202 genera, and 254 species (in 40 families), of which 232 are named at the species level. Undoubtedly, the actual numbers of species on Barbados are much higher than now known. Nine species are possibly endemic to the island, 15 have been intentionally introduced, and 51 have probably been accidentally introduced through human activity. The remaining 157 named species may occur naturally as a result of natural over-water dispersal processes. These species mostly have a wide distribution in the Antilles and Latin America. The …

The Role Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases In The Regulation Of Plant Development, Erica Satterfield Apr 2009

The Role Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases In The Regulation Of Plant Development, Erica Satterfield

Theses and Dissertations

Mitogen-activated protein kinases are part of an evolutionarily conserved protein phosphorylation cascade which serves essential regulatory functions in eukaryotic organisms. Although the role of MAPKs in the regulation of a plant’s response to environmental stress and plant defense has been well established, very little is known about their role in the regulation of plant developmental processes. In order to examine the role of MAPKs in plant growth and development, a strong mammalian MAPK phosphatase (MKP-1), which is known to inactivate MAPKs in plants, was introduced into tobacco plants. In tobacco plants, MKP-1 overexpression altered plant responses to the phytohormones, ethylene …

Exploring The Relationships Between Executive Functions And The Big Five Personality Traits Using The Behavior Rating Inventory Of Executive Functioning-Adult Form, Kira Formicola

Theses

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between three subscales of the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Form (BRIEF-A) and the Big Five personality traits. The data used for this study consists of 126 hearing, college age participants from the Rochester Institute of Technology who were used as a control group for a previous study. As hypothesized, Emotional Regulation and Shift scales of the BRIEF shared a significant negative correlation with Neuroticism. Contrary to the hypothesis, the scale Inhibit shared a positive correlation with Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. Shift was significantly correlated with Openness to Experience. No …
