Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman May 2009

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how EMS's mediate the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. The overall hypothesis was that EMS's based on the total score of YSQ-S3 would mediate the relationship between parental styles based on the YPI and depressive and anxious symptoms. Results indicated support for the mediating effects of EMS's in the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. EMS's mediated the overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, and punitive mother with depression. EMS's mediated the emotionally depriving, overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, controlling, and emotionally inhibited father with depression. EMS's also mediated the emotionally …

Shrinking The Janzen-Connell Doughnut: Consequences Of An Invasive Multiplier (Microstegium Vimineum) On The Mid-Canopy In A Mixed Pine-Oak Forest, Rebekha Shaw May 2009

Shrinking The Janzen-Connell Doughnut: Consequences Of An Invasive Multiplier (Microstegium Vimineum) On The Mid-Canopy In A Mixed Pine-Oak Forest, Rebekha Shaw

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction of invasive species can alter seed fate predictions made by the Janzen-Connell Escape Hypothesis (JCEH). The JCEH states that there is a suitable region around a plant that is ideal for seed germination, growth, and recruitment. Seeds dispersed too close to the maternal plant are subject to competition from the maternal individual and perhaps density-dependent predation, whereas seeds dispersed further away may end up in suboptimal habitats. Invasive species may change the amount of these suitable habitats for native plants by creating unsuitable light environments and as a result, may influence the size of the ideal recruitment zone surrounding …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Spontaneously Immortalized Bovine Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cell Line, Thomas E. Liggett, T. Daniel Griffiths, Elizabeth R. Gaillard May 2009

Isolation And Characterization Of A Spontaneously Immortalized Bovine Retinal Pigmented Epithelial Cell Line, Thomas E. Liggett, T. Daniel Griffiths, Elizabeth R. Gaillard

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Background

The Retinal Pigmented Epithelium (RPE) is juxtaposed with the photoreceptor outer segments of the eye. The proximity of the photoreceptor cells is a prerequisite for their survival, as they depend on the RPE to remove the outer segments and are also influenced by RPE cell paracrine factors. RPE cell death can cause a progressive loss of photoreceptor function, which can diminish vision and, over time, blindness ensues. Degeneration of the retina has been shown to induce a variety of retinopathies, such as Stargardt's disease, Cone-Rod Dystrophy (CRD), Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), Fundus Flavimaculatus (FFM), Best's disease and Age-related Macular Degeneration …

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is the second largest island in the world and one of the most biologically and culturally diverse nations on the planet. One of the last true stone age people, they are struggling with the delicate balance of entering the 21st century without losing their unique cultural heritage or devastating the fragile ecosystem they have lived in harmony with for thousands of years. Slow, careful steps are needed in order to ensure sustainable development; however the hardships of living close to nature - disease, drought, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare services, are causing Papua New …

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung May 2009

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung

Geography Honors Projects

Young females are at three times higher risk of contracting HIV than their male counterparts in Jamaica. Using Jamaica’s 2004 Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour and Practices survey, this research investigates factors contributing to HIV/AIDS-related risky behaviors of young females. Risk perception as a function of knowledge and as an influence on behavior is also examined. The findings reveal that only older females, 25 to 49 years, practice safer behaviors in response to increased knowledge. This highlights the disjunction between knowledge and behavior, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing the social context within which adolescents are put at risk.

Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk May 2009

Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk

Geography Honors Projects

Urban refugees in Egypt are at high risk for HIV/AIDS because of the lack of adequate health resources, social stability and the intense stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS. Based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews conducted in Cairo, Egypt, this paper uses a vulnerability perspective to examine the challenges facing HIV-positive refugees in accessing necessary medical care. The combination of policy, structural forces and social relations results in a chain of causation that marginalizes refugees in Egyptian society. These social processes results in unequal access to health resources for refugees, thereby increasing their potential exposure to HIV transmission. This …

Resilience Of Gendered Spheres In Transnational Migration: An Interpretive Book Review Of Sheba Mariam George’S When Women Come First: Gender And Class In Transnational Migration, Jose Luis Calderon May 2009

Resilience Of Gendered Spheres In Transnational Migration: An Interpretive Book Review Of Sheba Mariam George’S When Women Come First: Gender And Class In Transnational Migration, Jose Luis Calderon

The Qualitative Report

Dr. Sheba George’s ethnographic study based using participant observation and purposive sampling and an insider transnational journey to examine changes in family and social roles that result when nurses from Kerala, India immigrate to the US ahead of their husbands. The author concludes that the economic and political gain immigration affords nurses does not translate into enhanced social status for their family in India or for their husbands in the US when they undergo gender transferral to homemaker. This transference causes a shift in gender structure from the home to the community, in this case the church as a way …

Feasibility Assessment Of A Kalman Filter Approach To Fault Detection And Fault-Tolerance In A Highly Unstable System: The Rit Heart Pump, Erin Gillespie

Theses

The purpose of this project is to assess the feasibility of a Kalman Filter approach for fault detection in a highly unstable system, specifically the heart pump currently under development at RIT. Simulations and experimental work were completed to determine the effects of possible position sensor fault conditions on the system; that information was then used in conjunction with a pair of Kalman filters to create a method of detecting faults and providing fault-tolerant operation. The heart pump system was modeled using Simulink and then the fault diagnosis and tolerance system was added to the model and tested via simulation …

Exploring Teachers' And Black Male Students' Perceptions Of Intelligence, Patrick Anthony Williams

Open Access Dissertations

This study explored teachers' perceptions of intelligence of 11th-grade Black male students and how students themselves perceived their own intelligence in light of Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence. Qualitative research methods were used to gain novel understanding of the students' and teachers' feelings, and perceptions as outlined in the research questions. Two versions of ecological systems theory provided the underpinnings for the framework of this study: 1) Brönfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory, and 2) Spencer's PVEST (Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory) model, which is an adaptation of the ecology model to Black students in the United States. In a …

Topology Optimization Of Continuum Structures Using Element Exchange Method, Mohammad Rouhi May 2009

Topology Optimization Of Continuum Structures Using Element Exchange Method, Mohammad Rouhi

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, a new zeroth-order (non-gradient based) topology optimization methodology for compliance minimization was developed. It is called the Element Exchange Method (EEM). The principal operation in this method is to convert the less effective solid elements into void elements and the more effective void elements into solid elements while maintaining the overall volume fraction constant. The methodology can be integrated with existing FEA codes to determine the stiffness or other structural characteristics of each candidate design during the optimization process. This thesis provides details of the EEM algorithm, the element exchange strategy, checkerboard control, and the convergence criteria. …

Travel Time Estimation In Congested Urban Networks Using Point Detectors Data, Anas Mohammad Mahmoud May 2009

Travel Time Estimation In Congested Urban Networks Using Point Detectors Data, Anas Mohammad Mahmoud

Theses and Dissertations

A model for estimating travel time on short arterial links of congested urban networks, using currently available technology, is introduced in this thesis. The objective is to estimate travel time, with an acceptable level of accuracy for real-life traffic problems, such as congestion management and emergency evacuation. To achieve this research objective, various travel time estimation methods, including highway trajectories, multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural networks (ANN) and K –nearest neighbor (K-NN) were applied and tested on the same dataset. The results demonstrate that ANN and K-NN methods outperform linear methods by a significant margin, also, show particularly good …

Laboratory And Theoretical Investigations Of Direct And Indirect Microbial Influences On Seafloor Gas Hydrates, James Gregory Radich May 2009

Laboratory And Theoretical Investigations Of Direct And Indirect Microbial Influences On Seafloor Gas Hydrates, James Gregory Radich

Theses and Dissertations

Bacillus subtilis capable of producing surfactin was cultured to evaluate effects of microbial cell mass on natural gas hydrate formation, dissociation, and stability characteristics. The direct molecular influences of microbial cell wall polymers inhibited gas hydrate formation significantly, decreased hydrate formation rates, and increased dissociation rates. Upon the introduction of bentonite, significant synergy was observed in the system in the form of a catalytic effect. Microbes cultured from seafloor seawater-saturated sediments collected from Mississippi Canyon 118 (MC-118) produced similar effects and generalized the observed trends. MC-118 cultures also produced biosurfactant in several culture media, which was shown to catalyze natural …

Characterization Of Late Embryonic B Cell Stages In Chicken Bursa Of Fabricius, Balazs Felfoldi May 2009

Characterization Of Late Embryonic B Cell Stages In Chicken Bursa Of Fabricius, Balazs Felfoldi

Theses and Dissertations

B cell development in chicken takes place in a specific primary lymphoid organ, the bursa of Fabricius. The bursa is considered to provide a microenvironment that promotes B lymphocyte survival and maturation. The most important maturation step in the bursa is the immunoglobulin (Ig) gene conversion, a process that is responsible for immunoglobulin repertoire in avian species. The Ig-gene conversion is strictly regulated, and only progenitors that are able to initiate the process will develop into fully functional B lymphocytes. In this study the late embryonic B lymphocyte stages are investigated, the bursal stem cell stage and the onset of …
