Epiparasitism In Phoradendron Durangense And P. Falcatum (Viscaceae), Clyde L. Calvin, Carol A. Wilson

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Phoradendron, the largest mistletoe genus in the New World, extends from temperate North America to temperate South America. Most species are parasitic on terrestrial hosts, but a few occur only, or primarily, on other species of Phoradendron. We examined relationships among two obligate epiparasites, P. durangense and P. falcatum, and their parasitic hosts. Fruit and seed of both epiparasites were small compared to those of their parasitic hosts. Seed of epiparasites was established on parasitic-host stems, leaves, and inflorescences. Shoots developed from the plumular region or from buds on the holdfast or subjacent tissue. The developing endophytic …

Horror, Philip J. Kain May 2009

Horror, Philip J. Kain

Philosophy

Nietzsche's stature as a philosopher has risen dramatically since his death. His writings increasingly captivate philosophical readers. There are many reasons for this. One reason is the depth of his thought. Philosophers like Aristotle, Kant, or Hegel impress us with the scope and breadth of their thinking. Philosophers like Plato, Descartes, or Berkeley impress us with an original insight that they unfold and elaborate. Nietzsche is different. He thinks deeply. He digs beneath other philosophies. He forces us to look at traditional philosophical assumptions from a different angle. He undermines and subverts them. He opens up the possibility of thinking …

Feeding Behavior Of Wild And Captive Oxpeckers (Buphagus Spp.): A Case Of Conditional Mutualism, Tiffany B. Plantan May 2009

Feeding Behavior Of Wild And Captive Oxpeckers (Buphagus Spp.): A Case Of Conditional Mutualism, Tiffany B. Plantan

Open Access Dissertations

Mutualisms are delicately balanced partnerships and are increasingly recognized as being fundamental to patterns and processes within ecological systems. Changes to the ecological setting in which such interactions operate can disrupt this balance. By understanding the context-dependent nature of such associations, researchers can begin to understand how changes in the environment can have cascading effects on the entire community within which they occur. Oxpeckers (Buphagus spp.) feed on the ectoparasites of ungulates in sub-Saharan Africa and from the blood of ungulate wounds. Because of this dichotomy in feeding behavior, the role of oxpeckers as consistently beneficial partners of their hosts …

Reef Fish Movements And Marine Reserve Designs, Nicholas A. Farmer May 2009

Reef Fish Movements And Marine Reserve Designs, Nicholas A. Farmer

Open Access Dissertations

Movement patterns and space use by mature fishes are critical in determining the effectiveness of marine reserves in conserving spawning stock biomass and/or providing biomass to adjacent fisheries through 'spillover'. Home range sizes, activity patterns, site fidelity and habitat preferences were determined for acoustically-tagged snappers and groupers using a rigorously-calibrated array of omnidirectional hydroacoustic receivers deployed in the diverse coral reef environments of a no-take marine reserve (NTMR) network in the Dry Tortugas, Florida. An individual-based localizing tendency model of reef fish movement was parameterized from fine-scale acoustic telemetry data and integrated into a Spatial Management Performance Assessment (SMPA) simulation …

Accurate determination of nitrite either as such or as the breakdown product of nitric oxide (NO) is critical in a host of enzymatic reactions in various settings addressing structure–function relationships, as well as mechanisms and kinetics of molecular operation of enzymes. The most common way to quantify nitrite, for instance in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) mechanistic investigations, is the spectrophotometric assay based on the Griess reaction through external standard calibration. This assay is based on a two-step diazotization reaction, in which a cationic diazonium derivative of sulfanilamide is formed as intermediate before the final absorbing azo-product. We show that this …

Purpose: Immunodeficient mice serve as critical hosts for transplantation of xenogeneic cells for in vivo analysis of various biological processes. Because investigators typically select one or two immunodeficient mouse strains as recipients, no comprehensive study has been published documenting differences in human tumor engraftment. Taking advantage of the increased metastatic potential of RhoC-expressing human (A375) melanoma cells, we evaluate four immunodeficient mouse strains: severe combined immunodeficiency (scid), nonobese diabetic (NOD)-scid, NOD-scid β2mnull, and NOD-scid IL2Rγ;null as xenograft tumor recipients. Experimental Design: Bioluminescence, magnetic resonance imaging, and histopathology were used to monitor serial tumor growth. Natural killer (NK) …

Gay And Lesbian Life At Colby 1969-1974, Rachel Baron, Qainat Khan May 2009

Gay And Lesbian Life At Colby 1969-1974, Rachel Baron, Qainat Khan

WGSS Selected Student Work

The history of a gay and lesbian student community at Colby seems to point to the difficulty of visibility. For students who were able to find others like themselves, their group of lesbian and gay friends had to remain underground. For students who were grappling with their newly found, socially stigmatized sexuality, the experience was isolating if they did not know where to find others like themselves. This paper seeks to address the social forces that kept sexually variant students from expressing their sexual identities openly on campus. Part of this difficulty is attributable to the compulsory heterosexuality assumed by …

Contribution Of Candida Albicans To The Synthesis Of The Volatile Organic Compound Ethanol In Putrefied Bodies, Chelsey Mozingo May 2009

Contribution Of Candida Albicans To The Synthesis Of The Volatile Organic Compound Ethanol In Putrefied Bodies, Chelsey Mozingo

Honors Theses

This experiment sought to determine if Candida albicans contributed to the production of the volatile organic compound ethanol in decomposing beef livers. The results this experiment proved to be inconclusive. This experiment showed no correlation between the amount the presence of Candida albicans and the production of the volatile organic compound ethanol based on the standard addition method. This may be indicative that VOC analysis is not an appropriate method for determining time of death based on a quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds. However, the experimental design most likely needs be altered to accommodate a more accurate method of …

Effects Of A Spatially And Temporally Predictable Chlorophyll Maximum On Bottlenose Dolphin Distribution In A South Carolina Estuary, Steven W. Thornton May 2009

Effects Of A Spatially And Temporally Predictable Chlorophyll Maximum On Bottlenose Dolphin Distribution In A South Carolina Estuary, Steven W. Thornton

Honors Theses

Numerous studies have focused on the complex relationship between phytoplankton and zooplankton in estuarine environments, but few have scrutinized the effects of this connection on organisms in higher trophic levels. This study examined chlorophyll a concentrations and zooplankton densities in North Inlet, South Carolina, a site where a stable chlorophyll a maximum has been documented to exist at low tide, to determine if they influenced the distribution of resident bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). We hypothesized that patterns of estuarine circulation in the salt marsh serve to concentrate phytoplankton and zooplankton predictably in time and space, and that these patterns influence …

Estimating The Extent Of Human Trafficking From Ukraine: Final Report, Dwayne Ball, Ronald Hampton May 2009

Estimating The Extent Of Human Trafficking From Ukraine: Final Report, Dwayne Ball, Ronald Hampton

Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking: 1st (2009)

This report summarizes the results of three studies done to estimate the extent of human trafficking from Ukraine. The studies were designed and reported by Dr. Ronald Hampton, principal investigator, Dr. Dwayne Ball, and (for one study) Ms. Julie Pennington, all of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business Administration Marketing Department.

Our intent in doing multiple survey studies was to attempt to converge on an estimate. Each method used has different and inevitable threats to validity, and there is no perfect method for estimating the extent of such a rare, hidden, and sometimes shameful event. Therefore, by using methods …

Identification Of Potentially Pathogenic Yeast Species In Seagull Guano By Molecular Techniques, Tobias L. Banks May 2009

Identification Of Potentially Pathogenic Yeast Species In Seagull Guano By Molecular Techniques, Tobias L. Banks

Honors Theses

Although studies have been performed identifying bacteria present in seagull guano, limited studies have been done with fungi, leaving a significant gap in our knowledge of a potentially significant reservoir of human disease. If pathogenic fungi are being deposited by seagulls in their feces then it is possible that the Department of Health might elect to monitor sand, as well as water, for a broad spectrum of disease-causing microbes. Currently only water is tested for the presence of coliform bacteria. It is hypothesized that there are pathogenic yeast-like fungi present in the guano of seagulls, that these fungi are deposited …

Students' Perceived Parenting Styles And Their Later Romantic Attachment Styles And Preferred Coping Tendencies, Shannon L. Bogart May 2009

Students' Perceived Parenting Styles And Their Later Romantic Attachment Styles And Preferred Coping Tendencies, Shannon L. Bogart

Honors Theses

In the first of two studies, the use of data compiled from questionnaires concerning perceived parenting style and romantic attachment style of Coastal Carolina University students were used to test the hypothesis that the authoritative parenting style would be related to the secure attachment style. The researcher used the terms attachment style and romantic attachment style interchangeably throughout the study. These variables were then statistically analyzed by a chi-square test of independence and showed statistical significance to support the hypothesis. The frequency of students who answered to have both authoritative parenting and secure attachments was significantly higher than the other …

Initiating Chromosome Replication In E. Coli: It Makes Sense To Recycle, Alan C. Leonard, Julia E. Grimwade May 2009

Initiating Chromosome Replication In E. Coli: It Makes Sense To Recycle, Alan C. Leonard, Julia E. Grimwade

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

Initiating new rounds of Escherichia coli chromosome replication requires DnaA-ATP to unwind the replication origin, oriC, and load DNA helicase. In this issue of Genes & Development, Fujimitsu and colleagues (pp. 1221-1233) demonstrate that two chromosomal sites, termed DARS (DnaA-reactivating sequences), recycle inactive DnaA-ADP into DnaA-ATP. Fujimitsu and colleagues propose these sites are necessary to attain the DnaA-ATP threshold during normal growth and are important regulators of initiation timing in bacteria. © 2009 by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press.

School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau May 2009

School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored the school experiences of foster children by asking their teachers how they perceive them academically, socially and behaviorally. Foster children, who have generally experienced adverse life circumstances, are prone to have academic and behavioral trouble in school; many drop out before completing high school. This research focused on assessing how teachers cope with the unique challenges these students present, their suggestions for how they could be supported in school, and recommendations in terms of teacher training for working with this group. Eight public school teachers of foster children from two urban schools in Rhode Island were …
