Homemaking In Asian American Women's Writing: Chuang Hua, Bharati Mukherjee And Meena Alexander Performing The Diasporic Home, Yan Jiang Jun 2009

Homemaking In Asian American Women's Writing: Chuang Hua, Bharati Mukherjee And Meena Alexander Performing The Diasporic Home, Yan Jiang

Dissertations

This dissertation examines how homemaking, as depicted in contemporary Asian American literature, reflects the bigger issue of Asian diaspora and identity transformation. I analyze how Asian immigrants, especially Asian women, make the home in America in varying ways, seemingly following their ancestral pattern or the mainstream American model but eventually transcend both. Following Judith Butler, I suggest that Asian immigrants' homemaking is performative. In this study, I look to the ideas of cultural identification and identity formation as a foundation for contemporary definitions of the diasporic home and contend that far from being a static mimicking of their former homes, …

Comparison Of The Shapiro-Wilk Test Jureckova Test Using Simulation And Multiple Distributions, Dejela I. Mahdi, Wafaa Jassim Mohammed Jun 2009

Comparison Of The Shapiro-Wilk Test Jureckova Test Using Simulation And Multiple Distributions, Dejela I. Mahdi, Wafaa Jassim Mohammed

Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences

Goodness-of-fit tests are primarily designed to verify the null hypothesis, which asserts that the observations of a given sample conform to a specific probability distribution—a scenario frequently encountered in practical applications across various fields, particularly in genetics, medical research, and biological studies. In 1965, Shapiro and Wilk proposed an intuitive goodness-of-fit test that accounts for nuisance location and scale parameters, a method that has since garnered significant attention within statistical literature. This work was further advanced by Sen in 2002, who extended the Shapiro-Wilk test to accommodate cases involving nuisance regression and scale parameters. Sen’s approach developed a test based …

Development Of Renal Phantoms For The Evaluation Of Current And Emerging Ultrasound Technology, Deirdre King Jun 2009

Development Of Renal Phantoms For The Evaluation Of Current And Emerging Ultrasound Technology, Deirdre King

Doctoral

The primary aim of this project was to develop novel anatomically realistic renal phantoms for the evaluation of current and emerging ultrasound techniques capable of diagnosing all grades of renal artery stenosis. Renal artery stenosis is considered the most common cause of potentially curable secondary hypertension which if left untreated can lead to renal failure. Its early detection is very important as it offers the possibility of various drug treatments, which are considerably less invasive and poses less risk to the patient. Computer-aided modelling techniques were used to generate a range of anatomically realistic phantoms of the renal artery from …

Hetero-Romantic Love And Heterosexiness In Children’S G-Rated Films, Karin A. Martin, Emily Kazyak Jun 2009

Hetero-Romantic Love And Heterosexiness In Children’S G-Rated Films, Karin A. Martin, Emily Kazyak

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article examines accounts of heterosexuality in media for children. The authors analyze all the G-rated films grossing $100 million dollars or more between 1990 and 2005 and find two main accounts of heterosexuality. First, heterosexuality is constructed through hetero-romantic love relationships as exceptional, powerful, magical, and transformative. Second, heterosexuality outside of relationships is constructed through portrayals of men gazing desirously at women’s bodies. Both of these findings have implications for our understanding of heteronormativity. The first is seemingly at odds with theories that claim that heterosexuality’s mundane, assumed, everyday ordinariness lends heteronormativity its power. In fact, the authors suggest …

Nondestructive Electromagnetic Material Characterization Using A Dual Waveguide Probe: A Full Wave Solution, Milo W. Hyde Iv, James W. Stewart, Michael J. Havrilla, William P. Baker, Edward Rothwell, Dennis P. Nyquist Jun 2009

Nondestructive Electromagnetic Material Characterization Using A Dual Waveguide Probe: A Full Wave Solution, Milo W. Hyde Iv, James W. Stewart, Michael J. Havrilla, William P. Baker, Edward Rothwell, Dennis P. Nyquist

Faculty Publications

A nondestructive technique for determining the complex permittivity and permeability of a perfect electric conductor backed magnetic shielding material using a dual waveguide probe is presented. The dual waveguide probe allows for the simultaneous collection of reflection and transmission coefficients which distinguishes it from single probe methods common in the literature. Theoretical development of these coefficients, which is accomplished through a coupled magnetic field integral equations formulation using Love's equivalence principle and solved via the method of moments (MOM), is discussed. Evaluation of the resulting MOM impedance matrix elements is performed using complex plane integration leading to enhanced computational efficiency …

Investigation Of The P13k/Akt/Foxo And The Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk Signalling Pathways In Ovarian Development, Claire Wynne Jun 2009

Investigation Of The P13k/Akt/Foxo And The Ras/Raf/Mek/Erk Signalling Pathways In Ovarian Development, Claire Wynne

Masters

The formation and development of ovarian follicles is regulated by the interactions of germ cells and somatic cells, intraovarian growth regulatory factors and the pituitary gonadotrophins, FSH and LH. Despite the fact that granulosa cells of large follicles are highly proliferative, granulosa cell tumours are rare suggesting that potent regulatory mechanisms, including apoptotic factors, control proliferation and differentiation of these cells. Two critical pathways that intercommunicate to influence ovarian cell proliferation and differentiation are the PI3K1AKT/FOXOI pathway and the Ras/Raf/MEKIERK cascade. As FSH can stimulate both pathways, a super-ovulatory regimen of hormones PMSG/hCG (FSHlLH analogues) administered to immature wildtype mice …

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly Jun 2009

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly

Doctoral

People have become obsessed with the harmful effects of eating (Rozin, 1999) and are experiencing ‘food anxiety’, a by-product of modern food. The aim of this research was to explore the nature of food anxiety in Ireland and the potential implications for the food sector. The research objectives were to determine the range of issues causing food anxiety in Irish consumers; to investigate the impact of food anxiety on food choice behaviour; to examine the potential of food anxiety as a segmentation variable for categorizing consumers; and to identify antecedents to the experience of food anxiety. A sequential, mixed methodology …

Time-Mode Circuits For Analog Computation, Vishnu Ravinuthula, Vaibhav Garg, John G. Harris, José A.B. Fortes Jun 2009

Time-Mode Circuits For Analog Computation, Vishnu Ravinuthula, Vaibhav Garg, John G. Harris, José A.B. Fortes

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We introduce time-mode circuits, a set of basic circuit building blocks for analog computation using a temporal step function representation for the inputs and outputs. These novel time-mode circuits are low power, provide good noise performance and offer improved dynamic range. The design, IC implementation and detailed theoretical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) analysis of a prototype time-mode circuit-a weighted average computation circuit-are discussed. This new way of computation is studied with respect to existing conventional voltage-mode and current-mode circuits. Two possible applications of these time mode circuits are presented: an edge detection circuit for 16 pixels and a 3-tap FIR filter …

A Rapid Method For Flow-Ready Cylindrical Microchannel Fabrication, Kimberly H. Henthorn Jun 2009

A Rapid Method For Flow-Ready Cylindrical Microchannel Fabrication, Kimberly H. Henthorn

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most current methods of microchannel fabrication are expensive and time consuming or result in noncylindrical channels, which is undesirable for many applications. A rapid inexpensive method for the fabrication of flow-ready cylindrical polymer microchannels from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is presented here. In this method, cylindrical needles are used as molds for the channels and also function as flow delivery devices after fabrication. Validation of channel function and smoothness can be accomplished by comparing experimental data to theoretical models. One model was previously developed by the author to predict the incipient motion of a glass sphere in contact with a perfectly smooth …

An Evaluation Of The Missouri Master Naturalist Program And Implications For Program Expansion, Caroline N. Broun, Charles H. Nilon, Robert A. Pierce Ii

Journal of Extension

The study reported here evaluated outcomes of the Missouri Master Naturalist Program. We developed a pre-test/post-test/follow-up format to determine if, after the program training, volunteers increased knowledge of key ecological, natural resources, and conservation concepts and issues. We also identified volunteers' motivations for participation in the program and compared their motivation scores with changes in their knowledge scores. Volunteers' knowledge scores increased (P ≤ 0.05) following the training and were maintained 6 months after training. Volunteers ranked values/altruism as important motivations for participating. There was no relationship between volunteers' motivation scores and changes in knowledge scores.

Finite Sample Properties Of Minimum Kolmogorov-Smirnov Estimator And Maximum Likelihood Estimator For Right-Censored Data, Jerzy Wieczorek Jun 2009

Finite Sample Properties Of Minimum Kolmogorov-Smirnov Estimator And Maximum Likelihood Estimator For Right-Censored Data, Jerzy Wieczorek

Dissertations and Theses

MKSFitter computes minimum Kolmogorov-Smirnov estimators (MKSEs) for several different continuous univariate distributions, using an evolutionary optimization algorithm, and recommends the distribution and parameter estimates that best minimize the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test statistic. We modify this tool by extending it to use the Kaplan-Meier estimate of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) for right-censored data. Using simulated data from the most commonly-used survival distributions, we demonstrate the tool's inability to consistently select the correct distribution type with right-censored data, even for large sample sizes and low censoring rates. We also compare this tool's estimates with the right-censored maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). While …

Phylogeographic And Phylogenetic Exploration Of Plethodon (Plethodontidae, Caudata) Salamanders In The Pacific Northwest, Tara Anne Pelletier

Dissertations and Theses

Genetic studies of amphibians often reveal substantial population structure due to either historical demographics from changing climate and geographic features over varying timeframes. Eight species of terrestrial salamanders (Family: Plethodontidae, Genus: Plethodon) reside in forests of the Pacific Northwest (PNW). Plethodon vehiculum is the most widespread and abundant terrestrial salamander in the PNW yet evolutionary studies are lacking. Using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data (D-loop and cytb) questions regarding the phylogeography of P. vehiculum and phylogenetics of western Plethodons are explored. Two major clades were defined in P. vehiculum, a southern clade in the Klamath-Siskiyou region and a …

Probing Interactions And Phase Separations Of Proteins, Colloids And Polymers With Light Scattering, Avanish Singh Parmar

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The broad objective of my research is to investigate the physical characteristics and interactions of macromolecules and nanoparticles, and the corresponding effects on their phase separation behavior using static and dynamic light scattering (SLS & DLS). Light scattering provides a non-invasive technique for monitoring the in-situ behavior of solutes in solution, including solute interactions, sizes, shapes, aggregation kinetics and even rheological properties of condensed phases. Initially, we investigated lysozyme solutions for the presence of preformed aggregates and clusters that can distort the kinetics of protein crystal nucleation studies in this important model system for protein crystallization. We found that both …

Disruption Of Osysl15 Leads To Iron Inefficiency In Rice Plants, Sichul Lee, Jeff C. Chiecko, Sun A. Kim, Elsbeth L. Walker, Youngsook Lee, Mary Lou Guerinot, Gyhheung An

Dartmouth Scholarship

Uptake and translocation of metal nutrients are essential processes for plant growth. Graminaceous species release phytosiderophores that bind to Fe3+; these complexes are then transported across the plasma membrane. We have characterized OsYSL15, one of the rice (Oryza sativa) YS1-like (YSL) genes that are strongly induced by iron (Fe) deficiency. The OsYSL15 promoter fusion to β-glucuronidase showed that it was expressed in all root tissues when Fe was limited. In low-Fe leaves, the promoter became active in all tissues except epidermal cells. This activity was also detected in flowers and seeds. The OsYSL15:green …

Discreet Dynamical Population Models : Higher Dimensional Pioneer-Climax Models, Yogesh Joshi May 2009

Discreet Dynamical Population Models : Higher Dimensional Pioneer-Climax Models, Yogesh Joshi

Dissertations

There are many population models in the literature for both continuous and discrete systems. This investigation begins with a general discrete model that subsumes almost all of the discrete population models currently in use. Some results related to the existence of fixed points are proved. Before launching into a mathematical analysis of the primary discrete dynamical model investigated in this dissertation, the basic elements of the model - pioneer and climax species - are described and discussed from an ecological as well as a dynamical systems perspective. An attempt is made to explain why the chosen hierarchical form of the …

Experimental Investigation Of Mixing Time In A Stirred, Torispherical-Bottomed Tank Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller, Nonjaros Chomcharn May 2009

Experimental Investigation Of Mixing Time In A Stirred, Torispherical-Bottomed Tank Equipped With A Retreat-Blade Impeller, Nonjaros Chomcharn

Theses

Glass-lined reactors are typically used in the pharmaceutical and specialty chemicals industries because of their material compatibility with most reactants and their cleanability. These reactors are typically equipped with a retreat-blade impeller placed close to the bottom of the tank a single baffle mounted from the top. The mixing performance of such reactors has not received significant attention in the literature, despite their ubiquitous presence in the pharmaceutical industry. In particular, mixing time, i.e., the time required by the system to achieve a predefined level of homogeneity, has not been studied to any significant degree.

In this work, the mixing …
