Molecular Data Are Transforming Hypotheses On The Origin And Diversification Of Eukaryotes, Yonas I. Tekle, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz Jun 2009

Molecular Data Are Transforming Hypotheses On The Origin And Diversification Of Eukaryotes, Yonas I. Tekle, Laura Wegener Parfrey, Laura A. Katz

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The explosion of molecular data has transformed hypotheses on both the origin of eukaryotes and the structure of the eukaryotic tree of life. Early ideas about the evolution of eukaryotes arose through analyses of morphology by light microscopy and, later, electron microscopy. Though such studies have proven powerful at resolving more recent events, theories on origins and diversification of eukaryotic life have been substantially revised in light of analyses of molecular data including gene and, increasingly, whole-genome sequences. By combining these approaches, progress has been made in elucidating the origin and diversification of eukaryotes. Yet many aspects of the evolution …

Chemchains: A Platform For Simulation And Analysis Of Biochemical Networks Aimed To Laboratory Scientists, Tomáš Helikar, Jim A. Rogers

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Background: New mathematical models of complex biological structures and computer simulation software allow modelers to simulate and analyze biochemical systems in silico and form mathematical predictions. Due to this potential predictive ability, the use of these models and software has the possibility to compliment laboratory investigations and help refine, or even develop, new hypotheses. However, the existing mathematical modeling techniques and simulation tools are often difficult to use by laboratory biologists without training in high-level mathematics, limiting their use to trained modelers. Results: We have developed a Boolean network-based simulation and analysis software tool, ChemChains, which combines the advantages of …

Redescription Of The Frog Bladder Fluke Gorgoderina Attenuata From The Northern Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Matthew G. Bolek, Scott D. Snyder, John J. Janovy Jr. Jun 2009

Redescription Of The Frog Bladder Fluke Gorgoderina Attenuata From The Northern Leopard Frog, Rana Pipiens, Matthew G. Bolek, Scott D. Snyder, John J. Janovy Jr.

Biology Faculty Publications

Morphological characters used to differentiate North American bladder flukes, Gorgoderina spp., are problematic and different authors use different morphological characteristics for distinguishing species. More importantly, no type specimens exist for four of the 12 North American species infecting anuran and caudatan hosts. A redescription of Gorgoderina attenuata (Stafford, 1902) Stafford, 1905 is based on new collections from 6 species of anurans from Arkansas, Nebraska, New York, and Wisconsin. Morphological comparisons between gravid G. attenuata recovered from bullfrogs and northern leopard frogs indicated statistically significant differences in 11 of 28 morphological characters examined. However, there was overlap among all of these …

Physiological Demands Of Competitive Basketball, Kenji Narazaki, Kris E. Berg, Nikolaos Stergiou, Bing Chen

Journal Articles

The aim of this study was to assess physiological demands of competitive basketball by measuring oxygen consumption (VO2) and other variables during practice games. Each of 12 players (20.4 ± 1.1 years) was monitored in a 20-min practice game, which was conducted in the same way as actual games with the presence of referees and coaches. VO2 was measured by a portable system during the game and blood lactate concentration (LA) was measured in brief breaks. Subjects were also videotaped for time-motion analysis. Female and male players demonstrated respective VO2 of 33.4 ± 4.0 and 36.9 …

Review: 'Fighting Traffic: The Dawn Of The Motor Age In The American City', John Alfred Heitmann

History Faculty Publications

During the early 1960s, as the Golden Age of the automobile in America began to wane, several commentators, including Lewis Mumford, raised the critical question of whether the automobile existed for the modern city or the city for the automobile. How and when the automobile became central to urban life is deftly addressed in Peter Norton’s Fighting Traffic: The Dawn of the Motor Age in the American City. This study is certainly one of the most important monographs focusing on the place of the automobile in American society within a historical context to appear in recent times; it interestingly supplements …

Developmental Implications Of Children's Virtual Worlds, Kaveri Subrahmanyam Jun 2009

Developmental Implications Of Children's Virtual Worlds, Kaveri Subrahmanyam

Washington and Lee Law Review

As virtual worlds for children increase in popularity, it is important to examine their developmental implications. Given the limited research on this question, we use extant social science research on youth and digital media to understand how children 's participation in virtual worlds might mediate their development. We identify four different pathways by which new media can potentially mediate development. Then we review relevant research on video games, which, like virtual worlds, contain three-dimensional online fantasy worlds; we also review research on online communication forums, which are like virtual worlds in that they allow users to create online selves and …

Estimating Nutrient Loss From Crop Residue Fires, Ron Gelderman Jun 2009

Estimating Nutrient Loss From Crop Residue Fires, Ron Gelderman

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

In spring and during some fall harvests, there can be accidental fires that burn the crop residue from a field or from part of a field. Although corn residue is most suscep¬tible to accidental burning, wheat residue is also vulnerable, and to a lesser extent so is soybean residue. Dry, windy conditions, along with large amounts of residue, provide the conditions for an outbreak of accidental burns. After the fire, the main concern is what was lost in nutrient value, or “What went up in smoke”? This publication discusses nutrient loss from a residue burn, average nutrient levels in residue, …

Thriving In Today's Times: Stress And The Family, Ann Michelle Daniels

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Family stress can be defined as “a real or imagined imbalance between the demands on the family and the fam¬ily’s ability to meet those demands” (National Ag Safety Database and Clemson Extension 2002). Stress can cause families to worry, to feel anxiety, depression, and sadness. Family fights, arguments, and frustrations can often grow in frequency and intensity when stress is high.

Give your children credit. They are more aware of what’s happening in your family than you think. Your children pick up on your moods. Are you trying to hide your worry over the economy, a possible job loss, or the stress your partner is under? Your children will be the first to know something’s not right—and begin worrying, too. And your children probably watch more television than you do; it is filled with reports of the poor economy and the high unemployment rate. Your children may come to fear that they could lose their home or have to move away …

Thriving In Today's Times: Recognizing And Addressing Your Teen's Stress, Ann Michelle Daniels, Marilyn F. Rasmussen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The family’s emotional climate has a large impact on adolescent stress. An adolescent’s emerging role as a young adult produces an acute awareness of family status. Parents need to monitor their teens if the family is suffering from extremely stressful circumstances, including economic uncertainty. When the family’s financial resources are threatened, rather than being shielded from regretful information, adolescents should be involved in the family decision making. Adolescents are often keenly aware of what is happen¬ing in society, including issues such as a poor economy, home foreclosures, and job loss. Teenagers may become fearful that these issues will affect not …

Thriving In Today’S Times: Sharing Values About Money, Liz Gorham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

When money becomes scarce, the entire family—from young children to teens to parents—can feel the pinch. However, though family members may have no control over the causes of their financial difficulties, they can control their responses to those difficulties. In fact, parents can turn even tough times into learning situations. There are real opportunities to increase family communication and solidarity and to help children take control of their lives. There is a long-term benefit to involving children in family finances: researchers who studied individuals during the Great Depression found that youth who worked to contribute income for the support of …

Thriving In Today’S Times: When Prices Rise—Living On Your Income, Liz Gorham, Debra Pankow

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

An increase in the price of goods and services can be traumatic. When you have to pay more for things like gasoline, food, and health care, other difficulties may arise, especially if you are retired and/or are living on a fixed income. It can be alarming to realize that, even in covering just the basics, your income does not go as far as it used to. Overall price increases are often due to an increase in the price of one essential product. An increase in the price of that essential product may trigger an increase in the price of other …

Test Procedures For Equality Of Two Variances In Delta Distributions, Jezaniah Kira Sarion Tena Jun 2009

Test Procedures For Equality Of Two Variances In Delta Distributions, Jezaniah Kira Sarion Tena

Dissertations

Statistical literature on testing equality of variances is very broad, encompassing a great number of distributional variations. However, the case of a zero-inflated nonnegative continuous random variable has not yet been considered. Such distribution is specified by a positive probability that the variable assumes a true zero value, together with a conditional distribution for the positive values of the variable.

This study considers the special case, delta distribution, where the positive values come from the lognormal distribution. Test procedures were developed using a statistic based on Gini's Mean Difference. Since the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic was shown to …

Barrow Island Ute Guide - Non-Indigenous Insects, Spiders And Snails, Mike Grimm, Kristofer Collett, Peter Davis, Marc Widmer, Andras Szito, Rob Emery, Peter Mangano

Biosecurity published reports

Barrow Island, the second largest island in Western Australia, is a Class A Nature Reserve and home to a variety of rare and endangered fauna and flora, some of which occur nowhere else. The island lies about 70 km off the north-west coast of Western Australia and 150 km west of Karratha.

Oil discoveries in the 1960s and the development of massive Northwest Shelf gas reserves since the 1990s made Barrow Island an important site for these industries. Strict environmental and quarantine conditions are placed on industry seeking permits to drill oil wells and construct gas processing plants. Oil production …
