Instream Flows And The Public Trust, Timothy M. Mulvaney Jul 2009

Instream Flows And The Public Trust, Timothy M. Mulvaney

Faculty Scholarship

Empirical evidence suggests that diversion of instream flows for human use, coupled with the potential impacts of changing climatic conditions, is threatening the sustainability of aquatic life. Nonetheless, several states merely prevent stream flows from being reduced below the "7Q10 flow," or the average flow during the driest consecutive seven-day period that has a likelihood of recurring only once every ten years. Overwhelming scientific consensus suggests that 7Q10 merely preserves water quality standards by calculating the concentration of pollutants in point source discharges, without considering water quantity and numerous other core principles of instream management.

The protection of instream flows …

Co2, Nitrogen, And Diversity Differentially Affect Seed Production Of Prairie Plants, J. Hillierislambers, W. S. Harpole, Stefan A. Schnitzer, D. Tilman, P. B. Reich Jul 2009

Co2, Nitrogen, And Diversity Differentially Affect Seed Production Of Prairie Plants, J. Hillierislambers, W. S. Harpole, Stefan A. Schnitzer, D. Tilman, P. B. Reich

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Plant species composition and diversity is often influenced by early life history stages; thus, global change could dramatically affect plant community structure by altering seed production. Unfortunately, plant reproductive responses to global change are rarely studied in field settings, making it difficult to assess this possibility. To address this issue, we quantified the effects of elevated CO2, nitrogen deposition, and declining diversity on inflorescence production and inflorescence mass of 11 perennial grassland species in central Minnesota, USA. We analyzed these data to ask whether (1) global change differentially affects seed production of co‐occurring species; (2) seed production responses …

American Kestrel Reproduction: Evidence For The Selection Hypothesis And The Role Of Dispersal, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath Jul 2009

American Kestrel Reproduction: Evidence For The Selection Hypothesis And The Role Of Dispersal, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many hypotheses attempt to explain why younger, less experienced birds have relatively low reproductive output. We evaluated reproductive patterns of marked American Kestrels Falco sparverius nesting in boxes in southwestern Idaho from 1992 to 2006 to test predictions of these hypotheses. Results were consistent with the selection (differential mortality) hypothesis and did not support the constraint, restraint or recruitment hypotheses. Most known-age Kestrels nested in their first year of life, and there was no apparent short-term or long-term reproductive advantage to delayed breeding. The number of years that Kestrels nested in study area boxes ranged from 1 to 6 years, …

Sunny Samaritans And Egomaniacs: Price-Fixing In The Gamete Market, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jul 2009

Sunny Samaritans And Egomaniacs: Price-Fixing In The Gamete Market, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Law and Contemporary Problems

Krawiec compares the egg market to sperm market to illustrate the extent to which public-interest rhetoric enables private wealth transfers in the egg market. She also illuminates why such rhetoric is so effective, playing on deeply held societal norms. In addition, she provides an overview of the oocyte business, highlighting issues relating to recruitment, compensation, controversy, retrieval, and risk. She does the same for the sperm business. Furthermore, she discusses the anticompetitive behavior in the egg market and argues that the horizontal price-fixing embodied in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine's pricing guidelines violates the Sherman Act. Lastly, she concludes …

Commercial Surrogate Motherhood And The Alleged Commodification Of Children: A Defense Of Legally Enforceable Contracts, Hugh V. Mclachlan, J. Kim Swales Jul 2009

Commercial Surrogate Motherhood And The Alleged Commodification Of Children: A Defense Of Legally Enforceable Contracts, Hugh V. Mclachlan, J. Kim Swales

Law and Contemporary Problems

A surrogate-motherhood arrangement is one in which a woman agrees to bear a child for a commissioning couple. She carries the child through pregnancy and subsequently surrenders the child to the commissioning couple. There are two sorts of surrogate motherhood: genetic and gestational. Here, McLachlan and Swales discuss these two types. They further argue that commercial surrogate-motherhood contracts should be legally enforceable, despite the vociferous and prevalent opposition to them. Also, they argue that they do not involve the commodification of children, nor in other ways are they contrary to the interests of the children concerned. Here, they also present …

Ontogeny And Individual Variation In The Adrenocortical Response Of Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata) Nestlings, Haruka Wada, Katrina G. Salvante, Emily Wagner, Tony D. Williams, Creagh W. Breuner Jul 2009

Ontogeny And Individual Variation In The Adrenocortical Response Of Zebra Finch (Taeniopygia Guttata) Nestlings, Haruka Wada, Katrina G. Salvante, Emily Wagner, Tony D. Williams, Creagh W. Breuner

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Numerous studies indicate interspecies variation in the ontogeny of the adrenocortical response in birds; however, little is known about the extent of interindividual variation in avian young. Toward this end, we examined the ontogeny and interindividual variation in the adrenocortical response in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata) nestlings. We measured baseline and stress-induced total (bound and free) corticosterone, corticosteroid binding globulin capacity, and resulting estimated free corticosterone levels in nestlings of four different ages ( days 5, 10, 16, and 21). In addition, we investigated the potential correlates of interindividual variation (brood size and mass). Nestlings at days 5 and 10 …

Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications

This document represents and Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) for developing an Earth System Data Record (ESDR) quantifying global vegetated land surface freeze/thaw state (F/T) dynamics. The freeze/thaw ESDR (FT_ESDR) will be developed using multi-frequency satellite passive and active microwave remote sensing time series spanning multiple missions and sensors, including passive microwave radiometery from the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR), Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E), and radar scatterometry from SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT. These records are global in extent and provide a contiguous time series extending from 1979 onward with some overlap between missions.

Abundance And Density Of Mountain Plover (Charadrius Montanus) And Burrowing Owl (Athene Cunicularia) In Eastern Colorado, Heather C. Tipton, Paul F. Doherty Jr., Victoria J. Dreitz

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Because of continental-scale declines of grassland birds over the past century, conservation agendas are focused on increasing understanding of grassland bird ecology and habitat associations. Shortgrass prairie is a unique grassland ecosystem maintained, in part, by Black-tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). The Mountain Plover (Charadrius montanus) and western Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) are species of conservation concern known to be associated with prairie dog colonies. We estimated abundance of Mountain Plovers and Burrowing Owls in three habitats within the Colorado shortgrass prairie ecosystem— prairie dog colonies, grassland not occupied by prairie dogs, and …

Bushmeat Poaching Reduces The Seed Dispersal And Population Growth Rate Of A Mammal-Dispersed Tree, Jedidiah F. Brodie, Olga E. Helmy, Warren Y. Brockelman, John L. Maron Jul 2009

Bushmeat Poaching Reduces The Seed Dispersal And Population Growth Rate Of A Mammal-Dispersed Tree, Jedidiah F. Brodie, Olga E. Helmy, Warren Y. Brockelman, John L. Maron

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Myriad tropical vertebrates are threatened by overharvest. Whether this harvest has indirect effects on nonhunted organisms that interact with the game species is a critical question. Many tropical birds and mammals disperse seeds. Their overhunting in forests can cause zoochorous trees to suffer from reduced seed dispersal. Yet how these reductions in seed dispersal influence tree abundance and population dynamics remains unclear. Reproductive parameters in long-lived organisms often have very low elasticities; indeed the demographic importance of seed dispersal is an open question. We asked how variation in hunting pressure across four national parks with seasonal forest in northern Thailand …

A Place At The Blackboard: Including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, & Queer/Questioning Issues In The Education Process, Todd A. Savage, Debra A. Harley

Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education Faculty Publications

We know from history that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people have always existed in society (Campos, 2003; Sullivan, 2003). Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersexed, and queer/questioning (LGBTIQ) individuals, collectively known as sexual minorities, represent approximately 10% of the population. As many as nine students in every classroom of 30 are in some measure affected by sexual minority issues (e.g., having a gay or lesbian relative or being gay oneself) (AFSC Gay/Lesbian Youth Program, 1991). “Yet even with this substantial number, the code of silence in our nation’s school systems concerning homosexuality remains” (Fontaine, 1997, pp. 101-102).

Neuropsychological Effects Of The Traumatic Stress Response In Sexually Abused Adolescents Throughout Treatment, Kathryn R. Wilson Jul 2009

Neuropsychological Effects Of The Traumatic Stress Response In Sexually Abused Adolescents Throughout Treatment, Kathryn R. Wilson

Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Child maltreatment is a pervasive problem in our society that has long-term detrimental consequences to the development of the affected child such as future brain growth and functioning. The alteration of the biochemical stress response system in the brain that changes an individual’s ability to respond efficiently and efficaciously to future stressors is conceptualized as the traumatic stress response. The purpose of this research was to explore the effects of the traumatic stress response on sexually abused adolescents’ through a two-tiered study of neuropsychological functioning throughout treatment. It was determined that there are measurable differences in neuropsychological processing in sexually …

Modulation Of Lps-Induced Activation Of Hepatic Map Kinases, Oliver Surriga Jul 2009

Modulation Of Lps-Induced Activation Of Hepatic Map Kinases, Oliver Surriga

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a potent inflammagen that has been found to be primarily responsible for many symptoms caused by gram-negative bacterial infections. The LPS-initiated signal transduction pathways involve several terminal kinases, mainly p42/44 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), p38 MAPK and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), ultimately leading to increased expression of genes encoding such inflammatory cytokines as interleukin (IL )-1 . IL-6 and tumor necrosis factors (TNF)-u. In this study, the effects of age on LPS-induced activation of MAPKs in the liver of rats were examined. Results show that the basal level of phosphorylated p42/44 MAPK was increased in postnatal day …

Transmaturities: Gender Trouble As Tentative Analogue For Maturity Trouble, Diederik F. Janssen Jul 2009

Transmaturities: Gender Trouble As Tentative Analogue For Maturity Trouble, Diederik F. Janssen

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Recent contributions to queer studies have been marked by what can provisionally be called a turn toward time, specifically time's various normative condensations around issues of community formation, most notably with respect to the family and the subculture. While the specter of time often seems suspended between elite contemplation and public imagination, the emergent rubric of temporalities, explored in GLQ's special issue (2007;13/2-3), announced a possibly radical moment in which genders can be analyzed as breaking down "over time" politically and taxonomically, perhaps to the effect that deconstructive momentum realized in the context of gender/sexuality may facilitate …

Mutating Masculinity: Embodying The Hu(Man) In The Hills Have Eyes, Rebecca Hawkins Jul 2009

Mutating Masculinity: Embodying The Hu(Man) In The Hills Have Eyes, Rebecca Hawkins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Discussing gender identity in the female warriors of kung fu films, critic Kwai-cheung Lo asks, "Does maleness automatically produce masculinity? Is there a kind of masculinity independent of the biological male? Can the women who kill in action cinema occupy a position that has been historically thought of as exclusively masculine" (138)? In this paper, I am asking similar questions regarding the construction of masculinity in the male victim of a horror film. Since the slasher film genre rose to popularity in the 1970s and 1980s, horror films have often been accused of reveling in voyeuristic misogyny (a …

The Moving Figure: Dialogism In Williams' The Great Figure, Tom Lavazzi Jul 2009

The Moving Figure: Dialogism In Williams' The Great Figure, Tom Lavazzi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

In recent years, Henry M. Sayre, Christopher J. MacGowan, Barbara M. Fisher, Dickran Tashjian, William Marling, and Peter Halter, among others, have written about the influence of visual artists, especially Marsden Hartley, on Williams' poetry, and, conversely, the influence of Williams' poetry on painting. These critics have variously examined the personal, cultural, aesthetic, and ontological dimensions of the visual arts background of Williams' poetry, including "The Great Figure," first published as the final poem in Sour Grapes, 1921, and well-known as the source for Charles Demuth's 1928 painting, The Figure Five in Gold. Especially relevant to …

Probing Single-Molecule Interfacial Geminate Electron−Cation Recombination Dynamics, Yuanmin Wang, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu Jul 2009

Probing Single-Molecule Interfacial Geminate Electron−Cation Recombination Dynamics, Yuanmin Wang, Xuefei Wang, H. Peter Lu

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Interfacial electron-cation recombination in zinc-tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (ZnTCPP)/TiO(2) nanoparticle system has been probed at the single-molecule level by recording and analyzing photon-to-photon pair times of the ZnTCPP fluorescence. We have. developed a novel approach to reveal the hidden single-molecule interfacial electron-cation recombination dynamics by analyzing the autocorrelation function and a proposed convoluted single-molecule interfacial electron-cation recombination model. Our results suggest that the fluctuations of the interfacial electron transfer (ET) reactivity modulate the ET cycles as well as the interfacial electron-cation recombination dynamics. On the basis of this model, the single-molecule electron-cation recombination time of ZnTCPP/-TiO(2) system is deduced to be …

Fluorenylidene−Pyrroline Biomimetic Light-Driven Molecular Switches, Laura Rivado-Casas, Diego Sampedro, Pedro J. Campos, Stefania Fusi, Vinicio Zanirato, Massimo Olivucci

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A new family of biomimetic photoactivated molecular switches based in the retinal chromophore is described. Expedient synthesis allows a library of compounds with a different substitution pattern, including chiral substituents, to be obtained. The effect of substitution, solvent, and light source on the photoisomerization step has been assessed. The absorption maximum has been red-shifted ca. 50 nm with respect to related systems and rotation is now easily achieved by using visible light.

The Effect Of Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction On Stride-To-Stride Variability, Constantina O. Moraiti, Nikolaos Stergiou, Stavros Ristanis, Haris S. Vasiliadis, Kostas Patras, Cassandra Lee, Anastasios D. Georgoulis

Journal Articles

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to investigate the functional outcome after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using bone–patellar tendon– bone (BPTB) and quadrupled semitendinosus and gracilis tendon (ST/G) autografts by evaluating stride-to-stride variability.

Methods: Six patients with BPTB and 6 patients with STG ACL reconstruction, 2 years postoperatively, and 6 healthy control subjects walked on a treadmill at a self-selected pace while 2 minutes of continuous kinematic data were recorded with a 6-camera optoelectronic system. Stride-to-stride variability was calculated from the knee flexion/extension data using the nonlinear measure of approximate entropy, which estimates the regularity of movement patterns …
