Intake Of Repeatedly Heated Palm Oil Causes Elevation In Blood Pressure With Impaired Vasorelaxation In Rats, Xin Fang Leong, Mohd Nadzri Mohd Najib, Srijit Das, Mohd Rais Mustafa, Kamsiah Jaarin
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Oxidization of dietary cooking oil increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension by increasing the formation oxidative oxygen radicals. The aim of study was to investigate the effects of repeatedly heated palm oil on blood pressure, plasma nitrites, and vascular reactivity. Nitrites were measured, as an indirect marker for nitric oxide production. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups: control group fed with basal diet and other three groups fortified with 15% weight/weight fresh palm oil (FPO), palm oil heated five times (5HPO) or palm oil heated ten times (10HPO) for 24 weeks. The oil was heated …

Creating An Environmentally Sustainable Costume Shop, Katherine Stone
Creating An Environmentally Sustainable Costume Shop, Katherine Stone
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of my thesis is to provide the reader with a better understanding of how to create an environmentally sustainable costume shop. I chose to focus on certain elements of the costume shop that are imperative to the function of the shop, but desperately need to change for the sake of the environment. The elements I focused on were fabric, energy, and chemicals. Armed with a better understanding of why and what needs to be changed, the reader will be able to take this knowledge and apply it to their costume shop and life. We need to change how …
Effects Of Biofilm Age And Composition On Oyster Larval Setting, Alaina Hart
Effects Of Biofilm Age And Composition On Oyster Larval Setting, Alaina Hart
Theses and Dissertations
The lack of success in restoring oyster, Crassostrea virginica, populations to Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries has raised many questions about why many restoration efforts have failed. A number of studies have focused on the larval stage of oysters and considered the variables that impact oyster setting behavior in an effort to understand why oyster populations have not recovered. Studies that have examined setting surfaces suggest that biofilms promote oyster larval settlement; however, similar studies with barnacle larvae have found an inhibitory relationship. The present study utilized field-produced biofilms of different ages to determine if natural biofilms inhibit or promote …

Genetic diversity is the foundation for all biological diversity; the persistence and evolutionary potential of species depend on it. World leaders have agreed on the conservation of genetic diversity as an explicit goal of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Nevertheless, actions to protect genetic diversity are largely lacking. With only months left to the 2010-biodiversity target, when the 191 parties to the CBD have agreed on achieving a significant reduction of the rate of biodiversity loss, gene-level diversity is still not being monitored, and indicators and thresholds that can be used to devise strategies to conserve this important component …

Creation And The Germ Theory: How A Biblical Worldview Encouraged The Concept That Germs Make Us Sick, Alan L. Gillen, Douglas Oliver
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The news media writes frequently that germs cause disease. Infectious diseases such as swine flu, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, MRSA, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, and AIDS have captured the national headlines in recent months. With each passing year, these headlines reveal that some new disease outbreak or plague threatens thousands of lives. For example, in 2009 the news flash “Swine Flu Threatens the Globe” was broadcast across the nation, alarming many people. The emergence of a new strain of flu (H1N1) was said to place millions at risk.
Cis-Regulatory Sequence And Co-Regulatory Transcription Factor Functions In Erα-Mediated Transcriptional Repression, Richard Leroy Smith
Cis-Regulatory Sequence And Co-Regulatory Transcription Factor Functions In Erα-Mediated Transcriptional Repression, Richard Leroy Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Estrogens exert numerous actions throughout the human body, targeting healthy tissue while also enhancing the proliferative capacity of breast cancers. Estrogen signaling is mediated by the estrogen receptor (ER), which binds DNA and ultimately affects the expression of adjacent genes. Current understanding of ER-mediated transcriptional regulation is mostly limited to genes whose transcript levels increase following estrogen exposure, though recent studies demonstrate that direct down-regulation of estrogen-responsive genes is also a significant feature of ER action. We hypothesized that differences in cis-regulatory DNA was a factor in determining target gene expression and performed computational and experimental studies to test this …

Genetic Differentiation Of The Parasitoid, Cotesia Congregata (Say), Based On Host-Plant Complex, Georgia Karns
Genetic Differentiation Of The Parasitoid, Cotesia Congregata (Say), Based On Host-Plant Complex, Georgia Karns
Theses and Dissertations
Endoparasitoids of herbivorous lepidopterans have intimate relationships with their host species as well as the plant on which their host develops. Characteristics of both hosts and plants can affect parasitoid success in tri-trophic systems and thus, drive diversification. Genetic differentiation was estimated for Cotesia congregata (Say) collected from two distinct host-plant complexes, Manduca sexta L. on tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) and Ceratomia catalpae, (Haworth) on catalpa (Catalpa bignonioides Walker), in the mid-Atlantic region of North America using seven microsatellite loci and the mitochondrial COI locus. Microsatellite allele frequencies were differentiated based on host-plant complex, and COI haplotypes from individuals on …
Innexons, Membrane Channels For Atp, Control Microglia Migration To Nerve Lesions, Stuart E. Samuels
Innexons, Membrane Channels For Atp, Control Microglia Migration To Nerve Lesions, Stuart E. Samuels
Open Access Dissertations
ATP released upon nerve injury is an important chemotactic activator of microglia; however, the source of the extracellular ATP is uncertain. In large glial cells such as astrocytes, chemical or mechanical stimulation or injury causes an intracellular calcium wave that moves from cell to cell propagated by extracellular ATP through a regenerative ATP-induced ATP-release mechanism. In mammals a prime candidate for the ATP release channel is the pannexon, a hexamer of the invertebrate gap junction homologue pannexin1, although the pharmacologically similar protein connexin is also a candidate. I hypothesized that upon nerve injury, ATP released through pannexon channels activates microglia …
Crafting Authenticity, Allison N. Schumacher
Crafting Authenticity, Allison N. Schumacher
Theses and Dissertations
Authenticity is what we want from the world around us, from others, and crucially from ourselves and what we make. As it relates to graphic design, I define authenticity as a perceived match between form and purpose. For the designer, its quality is found in the process of simultaneously developing a concept and crafting the design/object.

Salmonella In Broiler Litter And Properties Of Soil At Farm Location., Victoriya V. Volkova, R. Hartford Bailey, Robert W. Wills
CVM Publications
Contamination of litter in a broiler grow-out house with Salmonella prior to placement of a new flock has been shown to be a precursor of the flock's Salmonella contamination further down the production continuum. In the southern USA, broiler grow-out houses are primarily built on dirt pad foundations that are placed directly on top of the native soil surface. Broiler litter is placed directly on the dirt pad. Multiple grow-out flocks are reared on a single litter batch, and the litter is kept in the houses during downtime between flocks. The effects of environmental determinants on conditions in broiler litter, …
Species Composition, Seasonal Activity, And Aggregations Of Dung Beetles On Cattle Pastures In Arkansas, Justin George Fiene
Species Composition, Seasonal Activity, And Aggregations Of Dung Beetles On Cattle Pastures In Arkansas, Justin George Fiene
Student Theses and Dissertations
The species composition, seasonal activities, and aggregations of dung beetles (Scarabaeidae and Geotrupidae) were monitored from April 2007 to September 2008 using ten dung-baited pitfall traps operated weekly at a site in northeastern Arkansas. Collections comprised 236,880 beetles, representing 22 species including Colobopterus erraticus L. and Onthophagus taurus Schreber, which are new state records. Labarrus pseudolividus Balthasar comprised 97.7 % of the total trap catch, with the majority being collected in June, July and August 2007 which involved two separate mass occurrences during that time. Colonizing dung beetles expressed strong intraspecific aggregation, while interspecific aggregation, though present, were typically of …

A Sequential Algorithm To Identify The Mixing Endpoints In Liquids In Pharmaceutical Applications, Akriti Saxena
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to develop a sequential algorithm to determine accurately and quickly, at which point in time a product is well mixed or reaches a steady state plateau, in terms of the Refractive Index (RI). An algorithm using sequential non-linear model fitting and prediction is proposed. A simulation study representing typical scenarios in a liquid manufacturing process in pharmaceutical industries was performed to evaluate the proposed algorithm. The data simulated included autocorrelated normal errors and used the Gompertz model. A set of 27 different combinations of the parameters of the Gompertz function were considered. The results …
A Top-Down Proteomic Approach For The Discovery Of Novel Serum Biomarkers Of Pregnancy-Related Disease, Karen Merrell
A Top-Down Proteomic Approach For The Discovery Of Novel Serum Biomarkers Of Pregnancy-Related Disease, Karen Merrell
Theses and Dissertations
The serum fraction of blood is an ideal material in which to search for novel biomarkers for disease. It is easily obtained through relatively non-invasive means, routinely collected, and a rich treasure-trove of information about the health of an individual. Cells react to signal molecules, take up nutrients, and release waste products, fragments that are the result of proteolysis, and other molecules out into the bloodstream. If these components are unique to the cells in question, that part of the complex mixture that is the blood stream can potentially characterize the health of the tissue or organ those cells are …
Species-Driven Changes In Nitrogen Cycling Can Provide A Mechanism For Plant Invasions, Johannes M. H. Knops, Ramesh Laungani
Species-Driven Changes In Nitrogen Cycling Can Provide A Mechanism For Plant Invasions, Johannes M. H. Knops, Ramesh Laungani
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Traits that permit successful invasions have often seemed idiosyncratic, and the key biological traits identified vary widely among species. This fundamentally limits our ability to determine the invasion potential of a species. However, ultimately, successful invaders must have positive growth rates that longer term result in higher biomass accumulation than competing established species. In many terrestrial ecosystems nitrogen limits plant growth, and is a key factor determining productivity and the outcome of competition among species. Plant nitrogen use may provide a powerful framework to evaluate the invasive potential of a species in nitrogen-limiting ecosystems. Six mechanisms influence plant nitrogen use …
Chaperone Expression And Effects Of Its Inhibition On Breast Cancer Sensitization, Malissa Diehl
Chaperone Expression And Effects Of Its Inhibition On Breast Cancer Sensitization, Malissa Diehl
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is one of the most prevalent and deadly forms of cancer in women and is not restricted by race or ethnicity. Although a wealth of knowledge has been amassed on the biology of breast cancer, including its risk factors, diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, and treatment, it remains a serious health concern and active area of research. Initial response to standard chemotherapeutic and radiotherapeutic regimens is generally strong for many patients, yet breast tumors often recur, leading to more aggressive and resistant tumors. Because recurrence is such a clinical issue, more effective therapeutic approaches are needed to eliminate partial clinical …
The Potential Role For Capb In Pathogenesis Of Francisella Tularensis, Eric Fleming
The Potential Role For Capb In Pathogenesis Of Francisella Tularensis, Eric Fleming
Theses and Dissertations
Francisella tularensis was a facultative intracellular pathogen and a gram-negative coccobacillus which has been categorized by the CDC as a potential class A select agent due to its highly infectious properties and high mortality rates. Francisella tularensis was also responsible for the zoonotic disease tularemia, which was usually transmitted by arthropod vectors or via contact with infected animals. Francisella tularensis subspecies novicida has been used by many researchers in genetic pathogenesis experiments to try to elucidate genes responsible for virulence factors. One of these virulence factors was a capsular material which has been thought to be involved in either increasing …

Enhancing Nature Of Science Understanding, Reflective Judgment, And Argumentation Through Socioscientific Issues, Brendan E. Callahan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There is a distinct divide between theory and practice in American science education. Research indicates that a constructivist philosophy, in which students construct their own knowledge, is conductive to learning, while in many cases teachers continue to present science in a more traditional manner. This study sought to explore possible relationships between a socioscientific issues based curriculum and three outcome variables: nature of science understanding, reflective judgment, and argumentation skill. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to examine both whole class differences as well as individual differences between the beginning and end of a semester of high school Biology …

We appreciate the opportunity to review academic curriculum and current research focus of Exercise Science programs in South Korea. The information of this paper was collected by several different methods, including e-mail and phone interviews, and a discussion with Korean professors who attended the 2009 ACSM annual conference. It was agreed that exercise science programming in South Korea has improved over the last 60 years since being implemented. One of distinguishable achievement is that exercise science programs after the 1980’s has been expanded to several different directions. It does not only produce physical education teachers but also attributes more to …
Predictors Of Smoking Initiation In African American Adolescents, Jennifer Kienzle
Predictors Of Smoking Initiation In African American Adolescents, Jennifer Kienzle
Theses and Dissertations
Cigarette smoking and other forms of tobacco use are responsible for over 440,000 deaths per year in the U.S. Health consequences associated with cigarette smoking include cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, and cancer. Despite awareness of the health risks, approximately 21% of the U.S. adult population smokes. Efforts to-date to reduce smoking-related disease and illness have focused on prevention and intervention strategies that encourage cessation. Adolescence is a critical period for both intervention and prevention. Because more than three-fourths (80%) of adult smokers reported starting to smoke prior to the age of 18, prevention and brief intervention is likely to be …

The Production And Filtration Efficiency Testing Of Nonwoven Electrospun Fiber Mats, Jan Uecker
The Production And Filtration Efficiency Testing Of Nonwoven Electrospun Fiber Mats, Jan Uecker
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis the production and filtration performance of electrospun nylon-4,6 nanofiber mats was experimentally studied. The average fiber diameter of nylon-4,6 fibers is controlled by altering the polymer concentration in solution. Adding small amount of pyridine to the electrospinning solution controlled fiber beading and other defects. These fibers were then deposited onto a wide variety of conductive and dielectric substrate materials. A corona ion source was used to eliminate surface charging effects observed at the surface of all substrates. The resulting fiber mats, uniform in size and distribution as verified by SEM imaging, are tested for filtration efficiency and …
Specific Levels Of Therapeutic Ultrasound Stimulate The Release Of Inflammatory And Angiogenic Mediators From Macrophages In Culture, Thomas Turner
Specific Levels Of Therapeutic Ultrasound Stimulate The Release Of Inflammatory And Angiogenic Mediators From Macrophages In Culture, Thomas Turner
Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic ultrasound (TUS) is a treatment modality that is used to accelerate tissue healing. TUS is thought to affect cellular processes of tissue healing, especially those that occur in the inflammatory and early proliferative phases. TUS can be applied using various parameter selections including intensity, wavelength, duty cycle and treatment duration and no clear consensus exists on optimal parameters for healing enhancement. Macrophages are important mediators of inflammation and their actions are critical to normal progression into the proliferative phase of healing. They complete many functions during these periods of tissue healing, among those being release of cytokines and growth …
