How Ought We To Live With Nonhuman Animals? Peter Singer’S Answer: Animal Liberation Part Ii, Lesley Mclean Aug 2009

How Ought We To Live With Nonhuman Animals? Peter Singer’S Answer: Animal Liberation Part Ii, Lesley Mclean

Between the Species

In the previous paper I resituated Peter Singer's Animal Liberation within the larger context of the historical development of the animal activist movement. This paper directly follows on from the previous one, but here I take a closer at the book itself, focusing on 'Tools for Research', the second chapter in which Singer discusses animal experimentation particularly. My aim is to draw attention to the tactics adopted by Singer, which given the historical development of the movement, as detailed previously, are indeed activist, and offer some account of why they are morally persuasive.

The Epistemic Irresponsibility Of The Subjects-Of-A-Life Account, Julia Tanner Aug 2009

The Epistemic Irresponsibility Of The Subjects-Of-A-Life Account, Julia Tanner

Between the Species

In this paper I will argue that Regan’s subjects-of-a-life account is epistemically irresponsible. Firstly, in making so many epistemic claims. Secondly in making the claims themselves.

Transitions: Scaffolding Research Skills, Building Bridges, Creating New Knowledge, Kellian Clink

Library Services Publications

I interviewed librarians of six of our sending high schools to ask them what they taught students about research, citing, and technology. I hoped to understand better what I could build on in my library instruction sessions. I found that while many librarians taught power point and i-movies, and one rather upscale school had a citation style guide highlighting the basics of APA and MLA, they do not teach anything about authority, timeliness or bias or any other means of evaluating information. Or even the best means of finding information.

A Proposed Syntax For Minimotif Semantics, Version 1., Jay Vyas, Ronald J. Nowling, Mark W. Maciejewski, Sanguthevar Rajasekaran, Michael R. Gryk, Martin R. Schiller

Life Sciences Faculty Research

BACKGROUND:

One of the most important developments in bioinformatics over the past few decades has been the observation that short linear peptide sequences (minimotifs) mediate many classes of cellular functions such as protein-protein interactions, molecular trafficking and post-translational modifications. As both the creators and curators of a database which catalogues minimotifs, Minimotif Miner, the authors have a unique perspective on the commonalities of the many functional roles of minimotifs. There is an obvious usefulness in standardizing functional annotations both in allowing for the facile exchange of data between various bioinformatics resources, as well as the internal clustering of sets of …

Specifically, the researcher was interested to discover how drawing might be used as a learning tool in the various stages of the writing process. Nine elementary teachers - recognized as exemplary teachers of writing, completed a detailed questionnaire in reference to their writing instruction. All of the teachers surveyed value visuals highly and recognize the potential impact that drawing can have on writing. However, not all of these teachers are utilizing drawing or visual strategies in their writing instruction on …

Assessment Of The Endangered Species Podarcis Carbonelli On A Microgeographic Scale: A Molecular, Morphological And Physiological Approach, Maria Clara Figueirinhas Do Amaral Aug 2009

Assessment Of The Endangered Species Podarcis Carbonelli On A Microgeographic Scale: A Molecular, Morphological And Physiological Approach, Maria Clara Figueirinhas Do Amaral

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The lizard Podarcis carbonelli is an endangered species endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. One location where this species occurs is at the Berlengas Natural Preserve, an Atlantic archipelago off the coast of Portugal. These island populations are geographically separated from nearby mainland populations. The fundamental question is, are these insular individuals distinct from the mainland populations? Four localities were chose for comparison: two island populations and two nearby coastal populations. We assessed this question using three distinct approaches: molecular, morphological and physiological approach. We sequenced the 12S RNA, the mtDNA Control Region and the 7th intron of the !-fibrinogen gene …

Near-Surface Atmospheric Response To Simulated Changes In Land-Cover Vegetation Fraction, And Soil Moisture Over Western Kentucky, Ronnie Leeper Aug 2009

Near-Surface Atmospheric Response To Simulated Changes In Land-Cover Vegetation Fraction, And Soil Moisture Over Western Kentucky, Ronnie Leeper

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A series of land-use-land-cover-change (LULCC) based sensitivity experiments, including changes in vegetation type, fractional vegetation (FV), and soil moisture (SM), over Western Kentucky were conducted to investigate atmospheric response to land-use. The choice of land-use for this study was chosen in the context of Western Kentucky’s historical LULCC. For this study, vegetation types considered were grassland, forest, and bare soil with further variations in FV for grassland and forest at 25, 50, 75, and 100 % and systematic increases and decreases in volumetric SM of 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15 m3 m-3. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first assessment …

On The Prediction Of Extreme Ecological Events, Mark W. Denny, Luke J. H. Hunt, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley Aug 2009

On The Prediction Of Extreme Ecological Events, Mark W. Denny, Luke J. H. Hunt, Luke P. Miller, Christopher D. G. Harley

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Ecological studies often focus on average effects of environmental factors, but ecological dynamics may depend as much upon environmental extremes. Ecology would therefore benefit from the ability to predict the frequency and severity of extreme environmental events. Some extreme events (e.g., earthquakes) are simple events: either they happen or they don't, and they are generally difficult to predict. In contrast, extreme ecological events are often compound events, resulting from the chance coincidence of run-of-the-mill factors. Here we present an environmental bootstrap method for resampling short-term environmental data (rolling the environmental dice) to calculate an ensemble of hypothetical time series that …

Civil Partnership: Your Questions Answered - A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Civil Partnership Bill, Fergus Ryan Aug 2009

Civil Partnership: Your Questions Answered - A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Civil Partnership Bill, Fergus Ryan

Reports

The Civil Partnership Bill 2009 arguably represents the most momentous change in Irish Family Law in a generation. The Bill proposes a substantial new legal status for registered same-sex partners, as well as important changes to the law as it relates to cohabitants. This report addresses the provisions of the Bill as initiated, analysing the potential impact of the Bill in clear and accessible language. The Report also highlights potential difficulties with the Bill, and suggests possible enhancements to the Bill as initiated.

Veterinary Ethics And Production Diseases, Bernard E. Rollin Aug 2009

Veterinary Ethics And Production Diseases, Bernard E. Rollin

Professional Veterinary Ethics Collection

An animal's welfare should be governed by five freedoms, namely, freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, freedom to express normal behavior and freedom from fear and distress. If the essence of veterinary medicine is to act like a physician for animals then the profession must be vocal in opposition to production diseases, which can be prevented by changing the system of production.

Preference And Usage Of Pasture Versus Free-Stall Housing By Lactating Dairy Cattle, A. L. Legrand, M. A. G. Von Keyserlingk, D. M. Weary

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

The aim of the current study was to assess if cows preferred pasture or indoor housing, and how diurnal and environmental factors affected this preference. Lactating dairy cows (n = 5 groups, each containing 5 cows) were sequentially housed either in a free-stall barn on pasture, or given the choice between the 2 environments. Each group was tested 3 times under each condition, for a total of 21 d, to assess the effects of varying climatic conditions (outdoor temperature ranged from 9.9 to 28.2°C and daily rainfall from 0 to 65 mm/d over the course of the experiment). When provided …

The Cost Of Wet Corn At Harvest, Heather Gessner, Steve Pohl, Dick Nicolai Aug 2009

The Cost Of Wet Corn At Harvest, Heather Gessner, Steve Pohl, Dick Nicolai

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Producers with slowly maturing corn—either from a shortage of growing degree day units or from weather damage—face increasing unit costs of production due to potential grain drying. Corn in storage needs to be 85% dry matter before long-term storage is considered. Corn stored with moisture levels higher than 15% will mold, spoil, and bridge. Corn producers with cattle have a few more options than cash grain farmers. Silage and wet corn piles can provide feed for the operation with no additional drying costs. However, you still need to consider moisture levels for each of these storage options before choosing a …

Nesfatin-1 Exerts Cardiovascular Actions In Brain: Possible Interaction With The Central Melanocortin System, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson Aug 2009

Nesfatin-1 Exerts Cardiovascular Actions In Brain: Possible Interaction With The Central Melanocortin System, Gina L.C. Yosten, Willis K. Samson

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Nesfatin-1 is a recently discovered hypothalamic peptide that was shown to suppress food intake through a melanocortin-3/4 receptor-dependent mechanism. Since nesfatin-1 mRNA is detected in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, and because many peptides that alter food intake also influence cardiovascular function, we tested the ability of centrally administered nesfatin-1 to affect mean arterial pressure (MAP) in conscious, freely moving rats. Significant increases in MAP were observed following intracerebroventricular administration of nesfatin-1. Pretreatment with either the melanocortin-3/4 receptor antagonist, SHU9119 (intracerebroventricular), or the α-adrenergic antagonist, phentolamine (intra-arterial), abrogated the rise in MAP induced by nesfatin-1, indicating that nesfatin-1 may …

Phospholipase Dα1 And Phosphatidic Acid Regulate Nadph Oxidase Activity And Production Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Aba-Mediated Stomatal Closure In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Yanyan Zhang, Huiying Zhu, Qun Zhang, Maoyin Li, Min Yan, Rong Wang, Liling Wang, Ruth Welti, Wenhua Zhang Aug 2009

Phospholipase Dα1 And Phosphatidic Acid Regulate Nadph Oxidase Activity And Production Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Aba-Mediated Stomatal Closure In Arabidopsis, Xuemin Wang, Yanyan Zhang, Huiying Zhu, Qun Zhang, Maoyin Li, Min Yan, Rong Wang, Liling Wang, Ruth Welti, Wenhua Zhang

Biology Department Faculty Works

We determined the role of Phospholipase Dα1 (PLDα1) and its lipid product phosphatidic acid (PA) in abscisic acid (ABA)-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Arabidopsis thaliana guard cells. The pldα1 mutant failed to produce ROS in guard cells in response to ABA. ABA stimulated NADPH oxidase activity in wild-type guard cells but not in pldα1 cells, whereas PA stimulated NADPH oxidase activity in both genotypes. PA bound to recombinant Arabidopsis NADPH oxidase RbohD (respiratory burst oxidase homolog D) and RbohF. The PA binding motifs were identified, and mutation of the Arg residues 149, 150, 156, and 157 in …
