Differences In Offending Patterns Between Adolescent Sex Offenders High Or Low In Callous And Unemotional Traits, Katie Lawing Aug 2009

Differences In Offending Patterns Between Adolescent Sex Offenders High Or Low In Callous And Unemotional Traits, Katie Lawing

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Adolescents commit nearly one-fifth of the sex crimes each year. Among those offenders exists a group of adolescent sex offenders with callous and unemotional (CU) traits who seem to show a more severe pattern of sexual offending. The current study attempts to test the importance of these traits by comparing adolescent sex offenders high or low on CU traits based on victim and offense characteristics, and offending history. A sample of 150 detained adolescents with a current sexual offense conviction were assessed through self-report, clinical interview, and file review. Results indicated that after controlling for a history of antisocial behaviors, …

Synthesis Of Amphibian Alkaloids And Development Of Acetaminophen Analogues, Lei Miao

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The focus of these studies has been toward the development of new synthetic methods and procedures for the synthesis of novel compounds with unique biological properties. This research has led to the development of two new synthetic strategies for the construction of two novel amphibian alkaloids. In addition, the efforts have led to the large-scale process for the preparation of a novel analgesic compound. The regioselective ring opening of lactones (δ-valerolactone and γ-butyrolactone) with aryllithium reagents is reported for the construction of a series of δ-hydroxyarylketones and γ-hydroxyarylketones. Both the R and S enantiomers of the amphibian alkaloid noranabasamine were …

A Combined Motif Discovery Method, Daming Lu Aug 2009

A Combined Motif Discovery Method, Daming Lu

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A central problem in the bioinformatics is to find the binding sites for regulatory motifs. This is a challenging problem that leads us to a platform to apply a variety of data mining methods. In the efforts described here, a combined motif discovery method that uses mutual information and Gibbs sampling was developed. A new scoring schema was introduced with mutual information and joint information content involved. Simulated tempering was embedded into classic Gibbs sampling to avoid local optima. This method was applied to the 18 pieces DNA sequences containing CRP binding sites validated by Stormo and the results were …

Linking Reduced Deforestation And A Global Carbon Market: Impacts On Costs, Financial Flows, And Technological Innovation, Valentina Bosetti, Ruben Lubowski, Alexander Golub, Anil Markandya

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Discussions over tropical deforestation are currently at the forefront of climate change policy negotiations at national, regional, and international levels. This paper analyzes the effects of linking Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) to a global market for greenhouse gas emission reductions. We supplement a global climate-energy-economy model with alternative cost estimates for reducing deforestation emissions in order to examine a global program for stabilizing greenhouse gas concentrations at 550 ppmv of CO2 equivalent. Introducing REDD reduces global forestry emissions through 2050 by 20-22% in the Brazil-only case and by 64-88% in the global REDD scenarios. At the …

Electrocardiogram (Ecg) Signal Modeling And Noise Reduction Using Wavelet Neural Networks, Suranai Poungponsri, Xiao-Hua Yu Aug 2009

Electrocardiogram (Ecg) Signal Modeling And Noise Reduction Using Wavelet Neural Networks, Suranai Poungponsri, Xiao-Hua Yu

Electrical Engineering

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal has been widely used in cardiac pathology to detect heart disease. In this paper, wavelet neural network (WNN) is studied for ECG signal modeling and noise reduction. WNN combines the multi-resolution nature of wavelets and the adaptive learning ability of artificial neural networks, and is trained by a hybrid algorithm that includes the adaptive diversity learning particle swarm optimization (ADLPSO) and the gradient descent optimization. Computer simulation results demonstrate this proposed approach can successfully model the ECG signal and remove high-frequency noise.

Critical Thinking And Analyzing Assumptions In Instructional Technology, Bruce William Gabbitas Aug 2009

Critical Thinking And Analyzing Assumptions In Instructional Technology, Bruce William Gabbitas

Theses and Dissertations

In the field of instructional technology critical thinking is valued both as a practice for those in the field and as a skill or habit to teach and measure. However, traditional conceptions of critical thinking are limited in their usefulness and restricted to particular kinds of thinking and reasoning. Conceptions of critical thinking in instructional technology are dominated by these traditional perspectives. Missing is a substantive dialogue on the nature of critical thinking. despite the fact that such dialogue is a part of critical thinking scholarship outside of instructional technology. One of the primary limitations of traditional critical thinking is …

A Generalized Beta Model For The Age Distribution Of Cancers: Application To Pancreatic And Kidney Cancer., Tengiz Mdzinarishvili, Michael X. Gleason, Leo Kinarsky, Simon Sherman

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

The relationships between cancer incidence rates and the age of patients at cancer diagnosis are a quantitative basis for modeling age distributions of cancer. The obtained model parameters are needed to build rigorous statistical and biological models of cancer development. In this work, a new mathematical model, called the Generalized Beta (GB) model is proposed. Confidence intervals for parameters of this model are derived from a regression analysis. The GB model was used to approximate the incidence rates of the first primary, microscopically confirmed cases of pancreatic cancer (PC) and kidney cancer (KC) that served as a test bed for …

Sexual Experience And Couple Formation Attitudes Among Emerging Adults, Brian J. Willoughby, Jason S. Carroll Aug 2009

Sexual Experience And Couple Formation Attitudes Among Emerging Adults, Brian J. Willoughby, Jason S. Carroll

Faculty Publications

In this study, we explore the relationship between attitudes toward both marriage and cohabitation and sexual experience during emerging adulthood. Results from 990 emerging adults indicated only moderate evidence that marital attitudes are related to sexual experience but strong evidence of a relationship between attitudes toward cohabitation and sexual experience. In particular, sexually active emerging adults were more likely to have positive attitudes toward cohabitation. Furthermore, it was found that both religiosity and dating status moderate the relationship between couple formation attitudes and sexual experience. For highly religious emerging adults, sexual activity was associated with higher endorsement of cohabitation; however, …

Interconnecting Microfluidic Package And Fabrication Method, Hyoung Cho Aug 2009

Interconnecting Microfluidic Package And Fabrication Method, Hyoung Cho

UCF Patents

A one-piece, microfluidic package with standardized multiple ports allows devices to be connected in series without resorting to extra tubing connections or bonding 5 processes. The one-piece construction consists of microfluidic channels that can be connected to fluid reservoirs and other fluidic components fabricated with interconnecting and interlocking ports. The size of the friction-fit interlocking ports is designed such that the smaller male port fits snugly into the larger female port in a manner that is leak-free and adhesive-fiee. The friction-fit ports can also be 10 reconfigured. Thus, the interconnection of microfluidic packages can be in an extended series including …

Use Of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (Mrs) To Improve Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Mri) In The Diagnosis Of Intracranial Pathology, Done At Aga Khan University, Joyce Sande

Master of Medicine in Imaging and Diagnostic Radiology

Introduction: Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS)is a potentially useful adjunct to Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in thecharacterization of focal brain lesions. This study was aimed at showing that by the additional use of MRS (MRI, MRS), the characterization of a focal brain lesion into neoplastic, or non- neoplastic (infective, or degenerative) can be improved, as compared to the use of MRI alone. Study question: Does the additional use of MRS improve MRI differentiation of neoplastic from non- neoplastic (infective or degenerative) focal brain lesions? Methods: The design was prospective, analytical and comparative. 80 consecutive patients were enrolled. Conventional MRI of the …

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer Aug 2009

Rural Community Characteristics, Economic Hardship, And Peer And Parental Influences In Early Adolescent Alcohol Use, Laura De Haan, Tina Boljevac, Kurt Schaefer

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

The study explores how differences in rural community contexts relate to early adolescent alcohol use. Data were gathered from 1,424 adolescents in the sixth through eighth grades in 22 rural Northern Plains communities, as well as 790 adults, parents, teachers, and community leaders. Multilevel modeling analyses revealed that community supportiveness, as perceived by adolescents, but not adults, was associated with less lifetime and past month alcohol use, and for past month use, this relationship was stronger than perceived peer drinking or parental closeness. Perceived peer drinking and parental closeness were not associated with past month use. Adolescents experiencing family economic …

The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration Platform Training On Hamstring Flexibility, Travis A. Epperson Aug 2009

The Effects Of Whole Body Vibration Platform Training On Hamstring Flexibility, Travis A. Epperson

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Very few studies have looked at the effect of vibration on flexibility, and no studies exist that have looked at stretching concurrently with whole body vibration (WBV) training. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if whole-body-vibration training (WBV) done concurrently with static stretch (SV) is more effective than static stretching alone (SS), and to see if WBV training independently (SQ) improves hamstring flexibility without stretching. A secondary purpose of this study is to determine if retention of flexibility gains are maintained. Methods: Forty-four subjects (31 men, 13 women) completed this study (age 22.5 ± 1.8 years; …

Zyxin Regulates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition By Mediating Actin-Membrane Linkages At Cell-Cell Junctions, Liv Rebecca Sperry Aug 2009

Zyxin Regulates Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition By Mediating Actin-Membrane Linkages At Cell-Cell Junctions, Liv Rebecca Sperry

Theses and Dissertations

Development is punctuated by morphogenetic rearrangements of epithelial tissues, including complete detachment of individual motile cells during epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Dramatic actin rearrangements occur as cell-cell junctions are dismantled and cells become independently motile during EMT. Characterizing dynamic actin rearrangements and identifying actin machinery driving these rearrangements is essential for understanding basic mechanisms of cell-cell junction remodeling; yet, neither the precise series of actin rearrangements at cell-cell junctions that accompany EMT, nor the machinery that controls actin rearrangement during EMT, have been identified. This work represents a detailed study of junctional actin reorganization in cells undergoing EMT, identifies actin regulatory …

Marrying Immunotherapy And Chemotherapy: A Cancer Therapy Based On T Lymphocyte Expansion Augmented By Alternate Gamma Chain Cytokines And Gemcitabine-Mediated Inhibition Of Myeloid Derived Suppressor Cells, Esther Cha

Theses and Dissertations

Successful adoptive immunotherapy (AIT) for cancer relies on the infusion of in vitro expanded, tumor-reactive lymphocytes with a goal of generating productive tumor immunity. Previously, our lab has developed a protocol to activate selectively tumor-reactive T lymphocytes in vitro using two pharmacologic agents, bryostatin-1 and ionomycin. Following the pharmacological stimulation, conventionally, IL-2 is added to stimulate in vitro proliferation. In this report, alternate cytokines from the common cytokine receptor γ-chain family, namely IL-7 and IL-15, were explored as the alternative cytokine supplements. We found that tumor DLN cells activated in vitro with B/I and cultured in IL-7/15 alternate common γ-chain …
