Biological timekeeping in birds is a fundamental feature of avian physiology, behavior and ecology. The physiological basis for avian circadian rhythmicity has pointed to a multi-oscillator system of mutually coupled pacemakers in the pineal gland, eyes and hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN). In passerines, the role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin is particularly important. More recent molecular biological studies have pointed to a highly conserved mechanism involving rhythmic transcription and translation of "clock genes". However, studies attempting to reconcile the physiological role of pineal melatonin with molecular studies have largely failed. Recent work in our laboratory has suggested …

One of the key aspects in the development of LarKC is how to evaluate the performance of the platform and its constituent components in order to guarantee that the execution of a pipeline will match the user’s needs and provide the desired solutions (answers) to the user’s queries. Therefore, in this deliverable, the first in a series three documents concerned with the definition of a Framework for Measuring and Evaluating Heuristic Problem Solving, we make the first steps towards defining such framework by considering the theoretical foundations and principles of evaluation and measurement theory, discussing several important aspects related to …

Delineating protected areas for sensitive species is a growing challenge as changing climate alters the geographic pattern of habitats as well as human responses to those shifts. When human impacts are expected within projected ranges of threatened species, there is often demand to demarcate the minimum habitat required to ensure the species' persistence. Because diminished or wide-ranging populations may not occupy all viable (and needed) habitat at once, one must identify thresholds of resources that will support the species even in unoccupied areas. Long-term data on the shifting mosaic of critical resources may indicate ranges of future variability. We addressed …

A Study Of Ballota Limbata As An Alternative Medicine For Eye Diseases, Muhammad Ashraf Chaudhary, Dildar Ahmed, Shahid Rehman Khan
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Ballota limbata BTH. (syn. Otostegia limbata (BTH.) BOISS (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal herb used in folk medicine to cure a number of ailments. An aqueous extract of the herb is locally used for the treatment of eye inflammations and infections. To explore the possible cause of this application of the herb, we studied mineral elements present in it, as well as its antimicrobial effect against Bacillus subtilis. The leaves of B. limbata contain considerable amounts of zinc (4.6 mg/100g) and copper (0.847 mg/100g) which are known for their role in eye health. The quantity of iron (52.7 mg/100g) and calcium …
Modes Of Compensation In Exchange For Indigenous Knowledge: A Case Study Of The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria, O. F. Kunle
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Indigenous or Traditional Knowledge is that information or knowledge that has been developed by indigenous people in various regions of the world. Such knowledge generally relies exclusively on past experiences and observations and has been transmitted orally or in some form of script across generations of groups or communities of indigenous people. Therefore, this knowledge often has a cultural context, a collective ownership and is constantly evolving. More often than not, this indigenous knowledge is the only source of livelihood for the practitioners. As a result, most of them are not willing to divulge the knowledge without any form of …

Studies On The Antimicrobial Properties And Phytochemical Screening Of Garlic (Allium Sativum) Extracts, M. J. Olusanmi, J. E. Amadi
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
This study was carried out to evaluate the antimicrobial properties of garlic (Allium sativum) extracts on three fungi namely Aspergillus flavus, Curvularia lunata and Fusarium moniliforme using the pour plate method. A phytochemical screening of the extracts was also carried out to determine the constituents in garlic. Water, ethanol and acetone were the extractants used. Results showed that radial growth in all the three test organisms was impaired by the addition of the extracts in the culture medium used. The test organisms differed in their reaction to the different extracts but on the whole, growth inhibition increased with the concentration …

A Comparative Study Of The Antibacterial Activity Of Piliostigma Reticulatum Bark Extract With Some Antibiotics, S. Awe, P. F. Omojasola
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Piliostigma reticulatum, a herb widely used for the treatment of diarrhea in southwest Nigeria, was challenged with clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The ethanol extract exhibited the highest activity against the test organisms with zones of inhibition ranging from 16.0 – 20.0 mm, followed by the hot aqueous extract and the cold aqueous extracts, with zones of inhibition ranging between 8.0 – 10.0 mm and 4.0 – 7.0 mm respectively. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) ranged between 0.025 – 0.25% w/v and photochemical analysis showed that …

The contribution of SOS1 (for Salt Overly Sensitive 1), encoding a sodium/proton antiporter, to plant salinity tolerance was analyzed in wild-type and RNA interference (RNAi) lines of the halophytic Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana)-relative Thellungiella salsuginea. Under all conditions, SOS1 mRNA abundance was higher in Thellungiella than in Arabidopsis. Ectopic expression of the Thellungiella homolog ThSOS1 suppressed the salt-sensitive phenotype of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain lacking sodium ion (Na+) efflux transporters and increased salt tolerance of wild-type Arabidopsis. thsos1-RNAi lines of Thellungiella were highly salt sensitive. A representative line, thsos1-4, showed faster Na+ accumulation, more severe water loss in shoots under salt …

Structural variants (SVs) are common in the human genome. Because approximately half of the human genome consists of repetitive, transposable DNA sequences, it is plausible that these elements play an important role in generating SVs in humans. Sequencing of the diploid genome of one individual human (HuRef) affords us the opportunity to assess, for the first time, the impact of mobile elements on SVs in an individual in a thorough and unbiased fashion. In this study, we systematically evaluated more than 8000 SVs to identify mobile element-associated SVs as small as 100 bp and specific to the HuRef genome. Combining …

Frog virus 3 is the best characterized species within the genus Ranavirus, family Iridoviridae. FV3's large (similar to 105 kbp) dsDNA genome encodes 98 putative open reading frames (ORFs) that are expressed in a coordinated fashion leading to the sequential appearance of immediate early (IE), delayed early (DE) and late (L) viral transcripts. As a step toward elucidating molecular events in FV3 replication, we sought to identify the temporal Class Of Viral messages. To accomplish this objective an oligonucleotide microarray containing 70-mer probes corresponding to each of the 98 FV3 ORFs was designed and used to examine viral gene expression. …

R A Fisher, Design Theory, And The Indian Connection, A. R.P. Rau
Faculty Publications
Design Theory, a branch of mathematics, was born out of the experimental statistics research of the population geneticist R A Fisher and of Indian mathematical statisticians in the 1930s. The field combines elements of combinatorics, finite projective geometries, Latin squares, and a variety of further mathematical structures, brought together in surprising ways. This essay will present these structures and ideas as well as how the field came together, in itself an interesting story. © Indian Academy of Sciences.
