Pollen And Seed Morphology Of The Genus Hesperis L. (Brassicaceae) In Turkey, Münevver Pinar, Ahmet Duran, Tali̇p Çeter, G. Ni̇lhan Tuğ

Turkish Journal of Botany

Pollen and seed morphology were examined in 35 specimens representing 25 Turkish species of the taxonomically complex genus Hesperis L. by light and scanning electron microscopes. Three main types and 2 subtypes were recognized based on the seed coat surface, pollen shape, and exine sculpturing. The seed coat ornamentation of Type I was ocellate, and pollen shape was oblate-spheroidal. While Type II was represented by reticulate seed coat and prolate-spheroidal pollen shape, Type III had tuberculate seed coat. This study revealed that both palynological and seed morphological characters are of significant importance in the taxonomy of the genus.

Different populations of epiphytic lichens were studied in a microsite in Lower Nahal Keziv, Western Upper Galilee, Israel, which is designated as an "Evolution Canyon" (EC) II. In all, 24 lichen species from 5 orders, 11 families, and 17 genera were registered, about one third of them (7 species) for the first time in Israel. Species richness was higher on the warmer, drier, climatically more fluctuating and biotically more heterogeneous south-facing slope (SFS). The pollen morphology of 45 specimens of 29 species of the genus Astragalus L. of the section Onobrychoidei DC. distributed in Turkey was studied with light and electron microscopies. The pollen is generally 3-colporate. Pollen of the section is prolate, subprolate, and prolate-spheroidal. Size varies, with the polar axis ranging from 23.4 to 42.6 µm and the equatorial axis from 14.3 to 36.4 µm. The outline is elliptic or compressed oval in the meridional section, versus trilobulate and sometimes tetralobulate in the polar optical section. Nidularia Fr., known as bird's nest fungi (Nidulariaceae), a new interesting gasteromycete growing in pine forests, was recorded for the first time in Turkey at the genus level. The new genus is described and illustrated, and its taxonomic position within the family is discussed.

Pollen morphology of 12 taxa (6 of them endemic) that belong to the genus Gypsophila L. were investigated using light microscopy (LM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Differences in pollen morphology between these taxa were determined based on palynological studies. Pollen grains are spheroidal and polyporate. The exine structure is tectate, but that of G. sphaerocephala var. sphaerocephala is intectate. The exine sculpture is granulate-microechinate-microperforate, but that of G. sphaerocephala var. sphaerocephala displays clavate-microechinate ornamentation. An important aspect of salt tolerance studies in different plants is the relationship between salt and water stress. In the present study calluses (60 days old) of 2 sugarcane cultivars (cv. SPF 234 and cv. HSF 240) were treated with 4 different salt concentrations, including a control (0 mM NaCl), after 1% polyethylene glycol (PEG) pretreatment for 5 days. Fresh weight, callus browning, and necrosis data were recorded at day 120. Biochemical parameters (soluble protein contents, and peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activity) were also analysed. I describe the relative effectiveness of two primates in dispersing large-seeded tree seeds (> 0.5 cm) in the Nyungwe National Park (NNP), Rwanda. My objectives are three-fold: (1) to describe the relative effectiveness of primates in dispersing the seeds of five large-seeded tree species, (2) to evaluate the influence of primate seed-handling method on seed fate, and (3) to determine the influence of deposition site on seed fate. The aim of this thesis is to develop improved methods for calculating the free energy, entropy and enthalpy of solvation from molecular simulations. Solvation thermodynamics of model compounds provides quantitative measurements used to analyze the stability of protein conformations in aqueous milieus. Solvation free energies govern the favorability of the solvation process, while entropy and enthalpy decompositions give insight into the molecular mechanisms by which the process occurs. This is the first record of a green frog Rana (Pelophylax) kl. esculenta population from the E-system in the north-western part of Romania. From April to July 2005 we analysed the trophic spectrum of 84 Rana kl. esculenta females, extracting and identifying a total number of 801 prey items. Beside animal preys, plant materials and remains of shed skin were identified in the stomach contents. We did not find any Rana kl. esculenta individuals with empty stomachs. Forty-seven rotifer species were recorded from 11 freshwater bodies in Turkey. In all, 11 of these species, Cephalodella eva (Gosse, 1887), C. gibboides Wulfert, 1950, C. intuta Myers, 1924, C. maior (Zavadovsky, 1926), C. tenuiseta (Burn, 1890), Collotheca tenuilobata (Anderson, 1889), Monommata dentata Wulfert, 1940, Mytilina bisulcata (Lucks, 1912), Notommata tripus Ehrenberg, 1838, Paradicranophorus sordidus Donner, 1968, and Proales fallaciosa Wulfert, 1937 are new records for the Turkish fauna. Some of the recorded species were illustrated using light microscopy.

Six species of ostracod (Candona neglecta, Heterocypris incongruens, Ilyocypris bradyi, Darwinula stevensoni, Pseudocandona compressa, and Psychrodromus olivaceus) were collected from a newly developed spring between October 2001 and October 2004. The first 5 species have cosmopolitan distribution in the Holarctic region. The ratio of non-cosmopolitan to cosmopolitan species (called 'pseudorichness') was 0.2, suggesting dominance of cosmopolitan species. Among the species, C. neglecta displayed the highest tolerance to 6 different environmental variables, although its estimated optimum values varied. The morphology and infraciliature of 4 haptorid ciliates obtained from alkaline soil habitats in Van, Turkey, were investigated: Pseudoholophrya terricola Berger, Foissner & Adam, 1984, Paraenchelys wenzeli Foissner, 1984, Armatoenchelys geleii (Foissner, 1981), and Enchelyodon nodosus Berger, Foissner & Adam, 1984. The descriptions were based on live observations and silver impregnated specimens and morphometry. The main morphological characteristics of these species are similar to those described in the literature. The pathogens and parasites of Pyllotreta undulata Kutschera (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) collected from 5 localities in the Black Sea region of Turkey were investigated. Four different types of pathogens and parasites were recorded in adults of P. undulata: gregarine, microsporidium, and 2 nematodes, namely 1 Howardula species and 1 Hexamermis species. Gregarine and Howardula were the most common pathogen and parasite in P. undulata populations. There is the first record of a Hexamermis (Nematoda: Mermithidae) parasite from P. undulata in Turkey.

The distribution of amphibian species in Dobrudja has been studied for more than a century; however, the available information was scattered among tens of publications and museum collections. In the present paper we synthesized the available distribution records from published papers, museum collections, and our own field data. These distribution data were treated separately as historical data (before 1990), continuous data (records from both before and after 1990), and recent ones (after 1990). The aim of this study was to calculate the basic population parameters of Trachurus mediterraneus off the coast of the Eastern Black Sea. Average total length was estimated as 13.52 ± 1.884 cm for the entire population, 13.08 ± 1.594 cm for males, and 13.62 ± 1.804 for females. Average weight was 20.27 ± 8.819 g for the entire population, 18.65 ± 7.626 g for males, and 21.31 ± 9.184 g for females. Age of the fish ranged between 0 and 5 years. Rumen contents obtained from 10 adult domestic sheep (Ovis ammon aries L.) at a slaughterhouse in Lapethos-Kyrenia (Girne), Northern Cyprus were surveyed for entodiniid ciliate protozoa. As a result of our survey 27 species, including 33 forms, were identified. An unusual form of Entodinium was observed in 2 sheep and is described as a new species, E. cypriensis sp. nov. Its relationship to similar Entodinium species is discussed. This study also reports new host records for E. imai, E. oektemae, E. ogimotoi, E. quadricuspis, E. rectangulatum f. dubardi, and E. rostratum. Fars province in the south of Iran was surveyed for Asilidae (Insecta: Diptera) during 2006-2007. Twenty six species, belonging to 19 genera and 7 subfamilies: Apocleinae (5 species), Asilinae (7 species), Dasypogoninae (2 species), Laphriinae (2 species), Laphystiinae (1 species), Leptogastrinae (1 species) and Stenopogoninae (8 species), were recorded. Of these, 5 species are new to the fauna of Iran. Additionally 2 subfamilies, 10 genera, and 22 species were recorded for the first time from Fars province. Distributional data for each species are included.

Effects Of Carbaryl And Γ-Bhc On The Histology Of Midgut And Digestive Enzyme Profiles In The Third Instar Larvae Of Fruit-Sucking Moth, Othreis Materna (Linn.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Chitralekha Deshmukh, Aneel Mohite, Jagdish Shinde

The effects of LC50 dose of carbaryl and gamma benzene hexachloride (γ-BHC) on midgut histopathology and midgut enzyme activities in the third instar larvae of fruit-sucking moth, Othreis materna (L.) were studied. The sub-lethal doses of carbaryl and \gamma-BHC caused initially hypersecretory activity in the midgut epithelial cells leading to deposition of numerous secretory vesicles in the extraperitrophic space, clumping of chromatin matter, and regression and vacuolization of the columnar cells, but later on they were recovered within 24 h. Activities of the midgut digestive enzymes (amylase, invertase, lipase, and protease) were significantly affected. Carbaryl enhanced (P < 0.05) the amylase, invertase, lipase, and protease activities initially up to 4 h and 6 h of treatment, but after 24 h of treatment, amylase and invertase activities resumed while an inhibitory effect was observed on lipase and protease activities. \gamma-BHC did not affect the amylase and protease activities up to 4 h but later on it significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced their activities up to 6 h and 12 h, respectively. Thereafter it fell without showing any sign of recovery. \gamma-BHC enhanced (P < 0.05) invertase and lipase activities but they fell after 4 h treatment.

During 2 detailed surveys conducted along the Turkish coasts of the Aegean and Levantine seas in 2000 and 2005, respectively, 2 rare deep-water bivalve species, namely Bathyarca philippiana (Nyst, 1848) and Verticordia granulata Seguenza G., 1860, were recorded. Of these, V. granulata is new for the molluscan fauna of Turkish seas while B. philippiana is first record for the Levantine coast of Turkey. According to the literature at hand, V. granulata is also a new record for the Levantine Basin. In the present work, morphological, ecological, and distributional features of these 2 species are provided.

New Genera And Species Of The Family Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera) From Turkey, Abdullah Mart, Ümi̇t İncekara, Ahmet Polat, Hani̇fi̇ Karaca

Two hydrophilid genera, Cymbiodyta Bedel 1881 and Chasmogenus (Watanabe, 1987), and 3 species, Cymbiodyta marginella (Fabricius, 1792), Enochrus (Methydrus) coarctatus (Gredler, 1863), and Chasmogenus (Crephelochares) orbus (Watanabe, 1987), are reported for the first time from Turkey. The ecological findings and morphological characters of these species are described, and their aedeagi are illustrated. Biological observations and distribution records for all the newly recorded species are also presented. Diagnostic characters are supported with microscope micrographs.

The perennial monocarpic endemic species Heracleum platytaenium Boiss. [Apiaceae (=Umbelliferae)] was collected with associated insects in Kızılcahamam (Ankara) between June and August in 2006-2007. Nine insects, namely Hemipterous Graphosoma lineatum (L.), G. semipunctatum (Fabricius) and Anoraphis subterranea (Walker), Coleopterous Lixus nordmanni Hochhuht, Lepidopterous Aethes kasyi Razowski, Epinotia thapsiana (Zeller) and Epermenia chaerophyllella (Goeze), Dipterous Melanagromyza heracleana Zlobin, and Lasiambia albidipennis (Strobl.) (Diptera) were determined on H. platytaenium. Among them, M. heracleana (Agromyzidae) is recorded from Turkey for the first time, and Lasiambia albidipennis (Chloropidae) is new as genus and species for the Turkish fauna.
