Isothermal Titration Calorimetry Studies Of Protein-Mediated Interactions And Preliminary Structural Studies Of Tandem Pdz1-2 Domain Of Psd-95 Protein, Ana Jankovic

Wayne State University Dissertations

Protein-mediated interactions that involve multiple ligands in their binding mechanisms are critical for many cellular functions. The primary focus of this dissertation research was to investigate such interactions for two proteins, the PDZ domain and frataxin, involving peptide and metal binding ligands, respectively. The three component projects of this work comprised (1) thermodynamic analysis of PDZ domain binding using calorimetry; (2) X-ray crystallographic structural studies of a PDZ dual domain; and (3) thermodynamic analysis of frataxin binding to iron. The specific goal of the research conducted with the PDZ domains was to understand the mechanism of action of multiple/tandem protein …

Abstract

Background

Medicinal plants represent alternative means for the treatment of several chronic diseases, including inflammation. The genus Ranunculus, a representative of the Ranunculaceae family, has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic and antifungal activities, possibly due to the presence of anemonin and other. Different studies have shown the occurrence of unusual fatty acids (FAs) in Ranunculaceae; however, their therapeutic role has not been investigated. The purpose of this study is to characterize potential anti-inflammatory bioactivities in Ranunculus constantinopolitanus D'Urv., traditionally used in Eastern Mediterranean folk medicine.

Methods

The aerial part of R. constantinopolitanus was subjected to …

Abstract

Background

Cytokines secreted by immune cells and activated glia play central roles in both the pathogenesis of and protection from damage to the central nervous system (CNS) in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Methods

We have used gene array analysis to identify the initial direct effects of cytokines on CNS glia by comparing changes in early gene expression in CNS glial cultures treated for 6 hours with cytokines typical of those secreted by Th1 and Th2 lymphocytes and monocyte/macrophages (M/M).

Results

In two previous papers, we summarized effects of these cytokines on immune-related molecules, and on neural and glial related proteins, …

Developing Leadership In A National Cohort Of Secondary Biology Teachers: Uses Of An On-Line Course Structure To Develop Geographically Distant Professional Learning Community, P. Balcerzak, V. May, B. Schaal Jan 2009

Developing Leadership In A National Cohort Of Secondary Biology Teachers: Uses Of An On-Line Course Structure To Develop Geographically Distant Professional Learning Community, P. Balcerzak, V. May, B. Schaal

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

This report is a descriptive study of the role that on-line courses might have on the development of Professional Learning Communities (PLC’s) that support national leadership initiatives of participating high school biology teachers. The one hundred teachers involved in the Life Sciences for a Global Community (LSGC) Institute are expected not only to deepen their content knowledge, but also impact their district and state biology curricula. Additionally, the dispersion of Institute participants across the country presents a unique opportunity to develop, communicate. and implement a national coherent reform agenda. However, the geographic distance presents a barrier to collaborative design of …

Best Practice Guideline For The Subcutaneous Administration Of Insulin In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario Jan 2009

Best Practice Guideline For The Subcutaneous Administration Of Insulin In Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Registered Nurses' Association Of Ontario

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

The focus of this guideline is to support nurses, Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) in all practice settings, as they care for clients (18 years and older) with type 2 diabetes requiring subcutaneous insulin therapy. Specifically, this guideline would assist nurses who are not specialists in diabetes care to safely initiate and administer insulin, a "high-alert" medication. This guideline will provide answers to the question: What are the essential client self-care components to be addressed by nurses when caring for an adult with type 2 diabetes who requires subcutaneous insulin?

Bs 505 Introduction To Biblical Studies: New Testament, Keith Brewer Jan 2009

Bs 505 Introduction To Biblical Studies: New Testament, Keith Brewer

Syllabi

The primary text in this course is the Holy Bible. There are three basic theories behind the work of Bible translation: (1) Literal or formally equivalent; (2) Idiomatic or dynamically equivalent; and (3) Free or paraphrase. Some of the more literal versions of the Bible include the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and the Revised Standard Version (RSV) or the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV). Although both the King James Version (KJV) and the New King James Version (NKJV) fall into the category of literal translations, they are textually inferior to modern translations of the Bible. The New International Version …
