Effect Of The 2007 Heavy-Duty Highway Rule On Ph Levels Of Surface Waters In New York State, Bryan Comer Jan 2009

Effect Of The 2007 Heavy-Duty Highway Rule On Ph Levels Of Surface Waters In New York State, Bryan Comer

Student Work

In this project, I intended to gain evidence that reduction in wet deposition of sulfate (SO4 2-) and nitrate (NO3 - ), resulting from implementation of the 2007 Heavy-Duty Highway Rule, had led to an increase in pH levels of surface waters in New York State. Currently, some surface waters in New York State, especially in the Adirondack and Catskill regions, have pH levels low enough to damage aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of the 2007 Heavy-Duty Highway Rule is to both reduce sulfur (S) content in highway diesel fuel as well as reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from mobile sources. …

The War On Drugs, David Jakubiec, Andrew Kilcer, William Sager Jan 2009

The War On Drugs, David Jakubiec, Andrew Kilcer, William Sager

Student Work

America is in an epic battle, not against a foreign country but to keep you and every other citizen from putting a certain list of chemicals in your body. Since President Nixon, this battle has been labeled "The War on Drugs". This battle is extremely expensive: total cost to local, state and federal government equals $19.2 billion a year. In a country of approximately 300 million that equates to $64 per person (Elsner, p. 22). All of these resources are used in an effort to keep people from getting high. What do Americans get for 64 dollars a year; they …

Lectures In Elementary Fluid Dynamics: Physics, Mathematics And Applications, James M. Mcdonough Jan 2009

Lectures In Elementary Fluid Dynamics: Physics, Mathematics And Applications, James M. Mcdonough

Mechanical Engineering Textbook Gallery

From Chapter 1:

It takes little more than a brief look around for us to recognize that fluid dynamics is one of the most important of all areas of physics—life as we know it would not exist without fluids, and without the behavior that fluids exhibit.

It is the goal of these lecture notes to help students in this process of gaining an understanding of, and an appreciation for, fluid motion—what can be done with it, what it might do to you, how to analyze and predict it.

On Restating Products Liability Preemption, Mary J. Davis Jan 2009

On Restating Products Liability Preemption, Mary J. Davis

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This Article provides a brief explanation of the state of preemption doctrine and explains how the Court altered, quite dramatically, its treatment of preemption of common law tort actions in the last two decades. The Court's almost exclusive focus on the interpretation of express preemption provisions, which never specifically address common law tort claims one way or the other, turned "traditional" preemption analysis of common law tort claims on its head. The Court then, almost as suddenly, signaled a retreat from the emphasis on express preemption analysis and returned, awkwardly, to implied preemption doctrine. The Court has only recently begun …

Diversity Of Insects From The Vespidae Family In Three Ecological Niches (Forest, Forest Border, And Agricultural Area) In Six Communities In The Coroico And Coripata Municipalities, Department Of La Paz, Edwin Zapata Mayta

Theses and Dissertations

The Vespidae family (order Hymenoptera) is comprised of 4500 species of wasps in 268 genera and 7 subfamilies. These wasps prey upon a wide range of insects, including Lepidopteran caterpillars. Because of their low prey specificity, the use of Vespid wasps in biological control programs is limited. However, in their natural habitat, they play a role in controlling populations of some pest species. This study was conducted in six different communities in the department of La Paz within the municipalities of Coroico and Coripata. Three ecological niches were selected in each community: 1) the forest, 2) the edge of the …

Formulating A State Approach To Professional Development, R. E. Howard, S. Sarani, J. Woods

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

When viewed from the perspective of an entire state's needs, the challenges of designing professional development to meet the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind legislation of 2001 are daunting. In Oklahoma, the concerns about delivering to rural and urban populations which contain a variety of underserved populations are further complicated by the differences in the way science and mathematics are structured as disciplines. We describe two model programs, one in science and one in mathematics, which take much different approaches. However, the programs have three common elements that make them highly successful. Each program engages teachers strongly, …

The Penn Science Teacher Institute: A Proven Model, C. Blasie, J. Butler-Kahle

Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations

The University of Pennsylvania’s Master of Chemistry Education (MCE) program graduated five cohorts of approximately twenty teachers between 2002 and 2006. One year after the teachers in the last cohort earned their degrees, the Penn Science Teacher Institute (Penn STI) initiated a follow-up study to ascertain if the goals of the MCE program had been sustained. For example, were the teachers incorporating updated content knowledge into their lessons and were their students learning more chemistry? A total of seventy-four of the eighty-two graduates participated in some aspect of this study. Because baseline data were not available for the MCE teachers …

Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Place, Irus Braverman Jan 2009

Loo Law: The Public Washroom As A Hyper-Regulated Place, Irus Braverman

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

The article suggests that the public washroom is the most regulated of all common spaces in the United States. It offers several possible explanations for this hyper-juridical attention. First and foremost, the article argues that such hyper regulation of the public washroom has to do with the sanitary and moral significance of this space. Secondly, it argues that the intensity of washroom regulation is due to its ambiguous public/private properties. Finally, the articie suggests that the intense regulation of the public washroom is the result of physio-anatomical functions performed in it.

Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling Jan 2009

Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling

Faculty Scholarship

The role that intellectual property can play in the protection of traditional knowledge (TK) has been on the international agenda for more than ten years, with little to show for it. For example, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has provided a forum for international policy debate on the subject since 1998, and the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) has held meetings on draft provisions for the protection of TK against misappropriation and misuse since 2001. Similarly, since 1999 the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been examining the most effective means …

Handbook On Sensitive Practice For Health Care Practitioners: Lessons From Adult Survivors Of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Candice L. Schachter, Carol A. Stalker, Eli Teram, Gerri C. Lasiuk, Alanna Danilkewich

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

This handbook is the culmination of a multiphase, multidisciplinary research project that used grounded theory and participatory action research to illuminate ways that healthcare providers can work sensitively (in a trauma-informed way) with adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

The research identified nine Principles of Sensitive Practice: respect, rapport, taking time, sharing information and control, respecting boundaries, fostering mutual learning, understanding non-linear healing and demonstrating an understanding of trauma to patients. Specific guidelines were developed for a wide variety of issues pertinent to clinical practice such as, removal of clothing, touch, responding to disclosures of abuse, managing triggers among others. …

Pollinator Deception And Plant Reproductive Success In Jack-In-The-Pulpit, Joseph L. Pettit Jan 2009

Pollinator Deception And Plant Reproductive Success In Jack-In-The-Pulpit, Joseph L. Pettit

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I conducted a study of the deceptive pollination system of Jack-in-the-pulpit (Arisama triphyllum, Araceae) in forests of west-central Indiana. I focused on (a) determining the identities and abundances of insect visitors to spathes, (b) evaluating the success of female spathes in setting fruit, (c) determining the relative importance of pollinator visitation and plant size for fruit number, and (d) investigating the function of the female spathe's lack of an exit hole, which has been hypothesized to improve pollination success. I found that (a) Jack-in-the-pulpit receives visits from both flies and thrips. Counts of fly corpses from spathes showed the most …

Age Differences In Pain Locus Of Control And Pain Outcomes, Karen P. Elliott Jan 2009

Age Differences In Pain Locus Of Control And Pain Outcomes, Karen P. Elliott

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain is responsible for the majority of physician visits in the United States and results in substantial medical costs. Thus, it is vital that a comprehensive understanding of the pain experience be obtained. There is surprisingly little research on the experience of chronic pain among the growing aging population. To date, the literature on younger individuals has been generalized to older individuals, and research has failed to examine differences that may exist between younger and older individuals with chronic pain. The present investigation sought to gain a more comprehensive understanding of age differences in the pain experience, particularly in …

Impact Of Immuno-Adjuvants On Anti-Lymphoma Vaccine Efficacy, Hongtao Li

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Objectives . In the process of designing vaccines, the inclusion of adjuvants becomes increasingly important, especially tumor-associated plasmid DNA and its expressing peptide idiotypic (Id) regions of immunoglobulin, which have relatively weak immunogenicity. Here, we report on the CpG1826 and Phytol-based adjuvant PHIS-01, and their efficacies on DNA and recombinant protein vaccines against lymphoma models 2C3 and A20. Our objective of this study is to test and evaluate the efficacy in augmenting the immune responses and protecting the mice against the tumor growth. Methods . We explored two main immunization routes, intra-splenic and intra-peritoneal for 2C3 and A20 model respectively. …

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky Jan 2009

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Relationships play a significant role in emotional and physical well-being. Although many people believe that satisfying close relationships constitute the very best thing in life” (Berscheid, 1999, p. 260), the factors which contribute to relationship satisfaction have remained a mystery over the centuries. With almost half of all first marriages ending in divorce (United States Census Bureau, 2002), researchers have the opportunity to investigate potential reasons behind the apparent unhappiness and create interventions to support couples. This paper outlines the different, sometimes contradictory, aspects of marital satisfaction (personality, interactions, and expectations) and proposes a more comprehensive approach to explain some …

The Effect Of Religious Orientation On The Relationship Between Masculine Ideology And Closeness, Keith Karl Buhr Jan 2009

The Effect Of Religious Orientation On The Relationship Between Masculine Ideology And Closeness, Keith Karl Buhr

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the relationships among three variables: masculine ideology, religious orientation, and closeness in the closest cross-sex relationships of a male college student population. A behavioral measure of closeness was used to unearth other potential avenues than self-disclosure for demonstrating closeness in relationships, as well as examining how beliefs about being a man and one's religious beliefs may contribute or hinder closeness in these relationships. Analyses included an examination of a mediating and moderating model for predicting closeness in men's cross-sex relationships. Participants for this study included 332 male college students from two mid-size Midwestern universities. Participants completed online …

Analysis Of The Expression Of Selected Suppressors Of Cytokine Signaling, Socs1 And Socs3, Genes In Response To Limb Amputation In Xenopus Laevis, Lubna Fawzi Abu-Niaaj

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Identification of genes that are possibly stimulators or inhibitors in limb regeneration in vertebrates is important in understanding the regeneration mechanism and the cause of regeneration failure in non-regenerative structures. It is proposed that the development of the immune system of adult anurans modifies the capacity of limb regeneration. This modulation is mainly due to the participation of variety of immune cells in the response to inflammation caused by amputation. The influence of cytokines and their modulators including S uppressors o f C ytokine S ignaling (SOCS) proteins is critical in determining the nature of tissue response to injury and …
