To Pave Or Not To Pave: A Social Landscape Analysis Of Land Use Decision-Making In The Lamprey River Watershed, Erika Lea Washburn Jan 2009

To Pave Or Not To Pave: A Social Landscape Analysis Of Land Use Decision-Making In The Lamprey River Watershed, Erika Lea Washburn

Doctoral Dissertations

Seacoast New Hampshire's population has quadrupled in four decades resulting in sprawl and increased impervious surfaces which threaten the ecological health of Great Bay. Calls for watershed-based strategies addressing growth and land use planning abound. This study addresses these challenges by examining the question of whether there is a potential for watershed base land use decision-making. Using constructivist grounded theory, this study explores the social landscape of land use decision-making in a case study of the towns of the Lamprey River watershed. The qualitative methods include semi-structured interviews with GIS based maps and content analysis in NVivo software. Results include …

Development Of Nitrogen Protecting Groups And Synthesis And Complexation Of Bridged Bis-Tetraazamacrocycles, Matthew J. Young Jan 2009

Development Of Nitrogen Protecting Groups And Synthesis And Complexation Of Bridged Bis-Tetraazamacrocycles, Matthew J. Young

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of nitrogen-protecting groups that are orthogonal to the N-benzyl group for use in cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycles and the synthesis and complexation of bridged bis-tetraazamacrocycles are presented. The allyl, p-methoxybenzyl (PMB), and 2-naphthylmethyl (Nap) nitrogen-protecting groups were investigated for use on cross-bridged tetraazamacrocycle systems and conditions for deprotection were found for the N-allyl and N-PMB protecting groups. The conditions applied for the cleavage of the N-allyl and N-PMB groups and the systems that these conditions were employed on are illustrated below. This research has demonstrated that the N-allyl and N-PMB protecting groups are applicable to a variety of systems. These …

How To Analyze The Accuracy Of Eyewitness Testimony In A Criminal Case, Richard A. Wise, Clifford S. Fishman, Martin A. Safer

Scholarly Articles

This Article describes a method for analyzing the accuracy of eyewitness testimony that will significantly enhance the ability of the criminal justice system to assess eyewitness accuracy. The method consists of the following components: First, ascertain whether law enforcement conducted the eyewitness interviews in a manner that obtained the maximum amount of information from the eyewitness, did not contaminate the eyewitness's memory of the crime, or artificially increase the eyewitness's confidence. Next, determine whether the identification procedures in the case were fair and unbiased. Finally, evaluate what eyewitness factors during the crime are likely to have increased or decreased the …

Indigenous Rights In Latin America: The Gap Between Doctrine And Reality, Dan Ruge Jan 2009

Indigenous Rights In Latin America: The Gap Between Doctrine And Reality, Dan Ruge

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Indigenous people are prevalent across Latin America, with numbers reaching upwards of 70 percent of the general population in certain countries. Given their strong ancestral ties to the land and cultural practices, these groups have remained hidden and isolated from mainstream populations and the forces of globalization. For many groups, the limited interactions between indigenous people and the outside world have sadly been harmful to the survival of these communities. The discovery and exploitation of oil and other natural resources have led to the destruction of property, culture, and lives of indigenous groups. The uprooting and extinction in some cases …

Patterns And Challenges Of Parenting School-Age Children Among Selected Sub-Saharan African Immigrant Parents In Southwest Michigan: A Multiple-Case Study, Israel M. Kafeero

Dissertations

Problem. Parenting among immigrants presents unique challenges to parents whose cultural orientation is different from the host culture. Because of the meager research literature on immigrant families in the USA, little is known about the phenomenon of parenting among sub-Saharan African immigrant parents. This study investigated the patterns related to the parenting practices of selected sub-Saharan African immigrant parents, how they conduct corrective discipline to their children, and the challenges they face rearing children in Southwest Michigan.

Method. Qualitative research methods including interviews, observations, focus group discussions, and artifact collection were used in this dissertation to generate data. A snowball …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Abstract To develop a better understanding of the natural distribution of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and to update the knowledge of the incidence of its complex of parasitoids. S. frugiperda, samplings in whorl-stage corn were carried out in provinces of Argentina from 1999 to 2003. S. frugiperda larvae were collected from corn in localities of the provinces of Tucumán, Salta, Jujuy, Santiago del Estero, La Rioja, Córdoba, San Luis, Chaco and Misiones. In each locality 30 corn plants were sampled and only larvae located in those plants were collected. The parasitoids that emerged from S. …

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je Jan 2009

A Critical Evaluation Of John Hick's Religious Pluralism In Light Of His Eschatological Model, Haejong Je

Dissertations

Introduction to the Problem

The philosophy of John Hick, who is famous for his religious pluralism, has received vigorous study in terms of its epistemology, authority, the concept of God, and Christology. However, less attention has been given to his pareschatology. As explained below, initial investigation shows that there is a need for in-depth study of Hick’s religious philosophy in this area.

The Problem

Based upon preliminary research, Hick’s religious pluralism seems to reveal a critical problem with external correspondency, as follows. His pareschatology, which is an attempt to accept all eschatologies of major world religions as valid, may as …

Investigation Of River Eutrophication As Part Of A Low Dissolved Oxygen Tmdl Implementation, Gary M. Litton, W. T. Stringfellow, J. Herr, M. Brunell, S. Borglin

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

In the United States, environmentally impaired rivers are subject to regulation under total maximum daily load (TMDL) regulations that specify watershed wide water quality standards. In California, the setting of TMDL standards is accompanied by the development of scientific and management plans directed at achieving specific water quality objectives. The San Joaquin River (SJR) in the Central Valley of California now has a TMDL for dissolved oxygen (DO). Low DO conditions in the SJR are caused in part by excessive phytoplankton growth (eutrophication) in the shallow, upstream portion of the river that create oxygen demand in the deeper estuary. This …

Anglo-Australians' Attitudes Towards Asylum Seekers And Egalitarianism, Antonietta Matrone Faulkner Jan 2009

Anglo-Australians' Attitudes Towards Asylum Seekers And Egalitarianism, Antonietta Matrone Faulkner

Theses : Honours

Research has found that generally Australians hold negative attitudes towards asylum seekers. These negative attitudes appear to be influenced by perceptions of threat and false beliefs. The current study explored the attitudes of Anglo-Australians towards asylum seekers and how attitudes are related to the concept of Australian egalitarianism and fair go. Twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted for this study. Three main themes were identified through thematic content analysis: characterising asylum seekers, responses to asylum seekers in Australia, and constructing fairness.' Characterising asylum seekers represented the informants' constructs of asylum seekers as being genuine asylum seekers, or boat people …

Effects Of Temperature On The Metabolic Rates Of Insecticide Resistant And Susceptible German Cockroaches, Blattella Germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), B. N. Dingha, A. G. Appel, J. T. Vogt Jan 2009

Effects Of Temperature On The Metabolic Rates Of Insecticide Resistant And Susceptible German Cockroaches, Blattella Germanica (L.) (Dictyoptera: Blattellidae), B. N. Dingha, A. G. Appel, J. T. Vogt

Midsouth Entomologist

We examined the standard metabolic rates of pyrethroid resistant and susceptible German cockroaches, B. germanica. Measurements of CO2 production and O2 consumptions were obtained at 5 to 40 °C at 5 °C intervals using closed-system respirometry. Overall VO2 (ml g-1 h-1) was not significantly different among strains but different strains reacted differently to increasing temperature. Mean cockroach body mass differed significantly among strains and VO2 (ml g-1 h-1) scaled with temperature and mass in all strains. We used data at 25 °C to examine the effect of mass on the rate of oxygen consumption. Mass specific VO2 (ml g--1 h-1) …

Jumping Onto The Bandwagon: New Librarians Navigating The Science/Technology Librarianship, Nedelina Tchangalova

E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)

Abstract

The terminology of engineering is daunting to the novice librarian without any science background. Library information school (LIS) students without training in scientific disciplines express concerns about pursuing a career in engineering librarianship. Why don’t they get onto the science/technology (sci/tech) bandwagon? What information and inspiration are necessary to sail toward the science and engineering horizons of our profession? A successful transition from graduate student to practicing engineering librarian requires a complex combination of knowledge and skills. The support and assistance of colleagues is critical and the establishment of support groups for various research needs can provide a mechanism …

' Indications That I Can Touch The Hearts Of My Fellow Men': Reading Scenes Of Clerical Life From A Kleinian Psychoanalytic Perspective, Toni Griffiths

The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375

George Eliot tentatively reflected in her journal that she might be touching the hearts of her fellow men in Scenes aj Clerical Life. In this short paper, I explore with the aid of Kleinian psychoanalytical ideas what might be involved in such a touching of the heart and attempt in the process to indicate that, despite their evident flaws, the Scenes are powerful harbingers of the later and mature works.

I have elsewhere detailed my argument that a literary text will evoke a strong emotional response in the reader in those cases where the powerful and contradictory sensations of the …

The National Science Education Standards assert the vital importance of the inquiry process: “Inquiry into authentic questions generated from student experiences is the central strategy for teaching science” (National Research Council 1996). Yet students in U.S. high schools have highly variable laboratory experiences, and attempts at inquiry-oriented learning are often “cookbook” activities isolated from the larger flow of science and mathematics learning (Singer et al. 2006). In the higher education environment, it is similarly uncommon for students, particularly first-year students in science and statistics classes for non-majors, to have the opportunity to practice authentic research from formulation of a research …

Stability In The Context Of Change, Hallie Savage

Honors in Practice Online Archive

Last year at this time, I began to think about what I might adopt as a presidential theme. What could NCHC reasonably accomplish in 2008? If you recall, at that time we hired Liz Beck as Interim Executive Director, and one month before the conference we hired Cindy Hill. Major changes were inevitable in our organization. I began my presidency with a goal to work with the Board of Directors to establish stability in the face of these organizational changes. The goal of stability was in response to the need for a national office that would provide the resources for …
