Relating Groundwater To Seasonal Wetlands In Southeastern Wisconsin, Usa, John D. Skalbeck, Donald M. Reed, Randall J. Hunt, Jamie D. Lambert Jan 2009

Relating Groundwater To Seasonal Wetlands In Southeastern Wisconsin, Usa, John D. Skalbeck, Donald M. Reed, Randall J. Hunt, Jamie D. Lambert

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Historically, drier types of wetlands have been difficult to characterize and are not well researched. Nonetheless, they are considered to reflect the precipitation history with little, if any, regard for possible relation to groundwater. Two seasonal coastal wetland types (wet prairie, sedge meadow) were investigated during three growing seasons at three sites in the Lake Michigan Basin, Wisconsin, USA. The six seasonal wetlands were characterized using standard soil and vegetation techniques and groundwater measurements from the shallow and deep systems. They all met wetland hydrology criteria (e.g., water within 30 cm of land surface for 5% of the growing season) …

A Principled Approach To Teaching Music Composition To Children, Michele Kaschub, Janice P. Smith Jan 2009

A Principled Approach To Teaching Music Composition To Children, Michele Kaschub, Janice P. Smith

Research & Issues in Music Education

Building on an apposition of the theories of neurobiologist Antonio Damasio and music theorist Heinrich Schenker, we posit a new model for developing composition instruction based upon the organic connections between humans and music. Parallels are drawn between Damasio’s theory of consciousness in which meaning arises from the relationships between body, emotion, and feeling; and Schenker’s theory of musical structure in which opportunities for meaning making are revealed between the ursatz (background), mittelgrund (middleground), and vordergrund (foreground) layers of a musical work. The resulting principles-based approach to instruction reprioritizes the roles of elements and compositional techniques to foster greater expressivity …

Basal Autophagy Induction Without Amp-Activated Protein Kinase Under Low Glucose Conditions, Tyisha Williams, L. J. Forsberg, B. Viollet, J. E. Brenman

Biology Faculty Research

When ATP levels in a cell decrease, various homeostatic intracellular mechanisms initiate attempts to restore ATP levels. As a prominent energy sensor, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) represents one molecular gauge that links energy levels to regulation of anabolic and catabolic processes to restore energy balance. Although pharmacological studies have suggested that an AMPK activator, AIC AR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleoside) may link AMPK activation to autophagy, a process that can provide short-term energy within the cell, AICAR can have AMPK-independent effects. Therefore, using a genetic-based approach we investigated the role of AMPK in cellular energy balance. We demonstrate that genetically altered cells, …

The Mythic Journey Of A Changeling, Lawrence Kimmel Jan 2009

The Mythic Journey Of A Changeling, Lawrence Kimmel

Philosophy Faculty Research

There are many such tales in the archaic moorings of our collective memory, but one in particular that seems inclusive if indeterminate: Once upon a time there was a creature that came out of the darkness with a only a faint memory of water, and sand, and cold, and fear to discover that its very life depended on telling a story about its origins—of which it had no clear memory, and its destiny—of which it had no certain knowledge. What more fabulous to conceive than this creature which, having lost its tail, dreams of growing wings? It is a being …

Memento, Andrew Kania

Philosophy Faculty Research

The sleeper hit Memento (2000), directed by Christopher Nolan, is a brilliantly structured contemporary film noir, focused through the main character, Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), who has a debilitating memory condition. Hit on the head during a home invasion – "the incident" – Leonard can remember his life as an insurance-claims investigator before the incident, but he cannot form new long-term memories. Thus, every fifteen minutes or so, he becomes a partial tabula rasa afresh. The audience comes to understand this condition through Leonard's recounting the story of Sammy Jankis (Stephen Tobolowsky) in order to explain his own condition to …

Oligocarbonate Molecular Transporters: Oligomerization-Based Syntheses And Cell-Penetrating Studies, Christina B. Cooley, B. M. Trantow, F. Nederberg, M. K. Kiesewetter, J. L. Hedrick, R. M. Waymouth, P. A. Wender

Chemistry Faculty Research

A new family of guanidinium-rich molecular transporters featuring a novel oligocarbonate backbone with 1,7-side chain spacing is described. Conjugates can be rapidly assembled irrespective of length in a one-step oligomerization strategy that can proceed with concomitant introduction of probes (or by analogy drugs). The new transporters exhibit excellent cellular entry as determined by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, and the functionality of their drug delivery capabilities was confirmed by the delivery of the bioluminescent small molecule probe luciferin and turnover by its intracellular target enzyme.

Metadata Implementation For Building Cross-Institutional Repositories: Lessons Learned From The Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (Lasr), Jane Costanza, R. Cecilia Knight, Hsianghui Liu-Spencer

Library Faculty Research

Institutional repositories are an exciting innovation in scholarly communication and liberal arts institutions have a unique opportunity to create repository collections that reflect their tradition. However, the challenges of cost, staffing, infrastructure, standardized metadata, and content recruitment that are part and parcel of developing institutional repositories may be daunting to individual liberal arts institutions. The idea that multiple, like-minded institutions could join forces to share their efforts, unique challenges, and maximize their efficiencies grew into the Liberal Arts Scholarly Repository (LASR). Initial steps in this collaboration included the development of a group mission and a statement of collection policies. Technical …

Adaptive Harvest Management: 2009 Hunting Season

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

The process of setting waterfowl hunting regulations is conducted annually in the United States (Blohm 1989). This process involves a number of meetings where the status of waterfowl is reviewed by the agencies responsible for setting hunting regulations. In addition, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) publishes proposed regulations in the Federal Register to allow public comment. This document is part of a series of reports intended to support development of harvest regulations for the 2009 hunting season. Specifically, this report is intended to provide waterfowl managers and the public with information about the use of adaptive harvest management …

American Woodcock Population Status, 2009, Thomas R. Cooper, Keri Parker

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

Singing-ground Survey data for 2009 indicated that indices for singing American woodcock (Scolopax minor) males in the Eastern and Central Management Regions are not significantly different from 2008. There was no significant 10-year trend for woodcock heard in either management region during 1999-2009. This represents the sixth consecutive year that the 10-year trend estimate did not indicate a significant decline in the Eastern Region. The 10- year trend in the Central Region returned to stability after showing a significant decline last year. Both regions have a long-term (1968-09) declining trend of -1.1 % per year. The 2008 recruitment …

Predicting Music Enjoyment In Cochlear Implant Users, Rose Bradley Jan 2009

Predicting Music Enjoyment In Cochlear Implant Users, Rose Bradley

Independent Studies and Capstones

Most cochlear implant (CI) users perceive music poorly. Little is known, however, about the musical enjoyment received by CI users. The author examined possible relationships between musical enjoyment and music perception tasks through the use of 1) multiple musical tests, and 2) two groups of listeners: normal-hearing (NH) listeners with a CI-simulation and actual CI users. The two groups’ performances are compared to determine whether NH participants listening to music via CI-simulation software are a good model for actual CI users for perceiving music.

Communication Competence And Moral Competence: A Confucian Perspective, Xiaosui Xiao, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

Communication Competence And Moral Competence: A Confucian Perspective, Xiaosui Xiao, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

How can meaningful and productive communication take place among people of different cultural backgrounds? This question has become increasingly important in the age of the global village. Confucians, who long ago learned to live harmoniously with those from other parts of the world, have much to offer in response to the question. Western scholars and practitioners tend to see communication competence as a goal-achieving capability and self-assertive skill. Confucians believe that every human being is endowed with a moral nature and the capacity to feel, appreciate, and respect others. From this perspective, communication is seen primarily as an ethical and …

Investigation Of A Fresh African Elephant Carcass By Conspecifics, Christen Merte, Katie Gough, Bruce A. Schulte Jan 2009

Investigation Of A Fresh African Elephant Carcass By Conspecifics, Christen Merte, Katie Gough, Bruce A. Schulte

Biology Faculty Publications

This examination of elephant bones and ivory indicates that elephants show an elevated level of interest in conspecifics over other dead animals. Elephants do not seem to express special interest in dead kin but rather they appear to have a generalized response to injured, dying and deceased conspecifics (Douglas Hamilton et al. 2006, McComb et al. 2006). The present study reports the behaviour of a group of elephants in response to a euthanized adult male elephant that suffered severe wounds inflicted by a conspecific male. Most of the observations from previous studies have been on females and female group members. …

Affected Families In The Development Area Of The Mcdp Iii Project, Rosalina B. Domaboc, Porponio B. Lapa Jr., Eduardo Z. Alama

CNU Journal of Higher Education

The Metro Cebu Development Project III (MCDP) Project, particularly the Cebu South Reclamation Project is one of the three major components of the project package. A project of such magnitude requires an Environmental Compliance Certificate and one of its components is the social aspect of the study, whereby social preparation and acceptability would be of equal importance as those of the Physical and biological aspects of the environmental impact assessment. It was then the focus of this study to determine the social acceptability of the Cebu South Reclamation Project specifically among the directly affected families which are composed of marginalized …

Multi-Specie Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Model With Environmental Stochasticity, Dexter S. Ontoy, Roberto N. Padua Jan 2009

Multi-Specie Lotka-Volterra Predator-Prey Model With Environmental Stochasticity, Dexter S. Ontoy, Roberto N. Padua

CNU Journal of Higher Education

The interaction of multiple specie of animals in an ecological system is modeled by first reducing the ecological system to a kernel ecological system consisting of keystone species and top predators in the environment through the Graph Theory. From the reduced kernel ecological system of keystone specie, a system of Lotka-Volterra differential equations is used to describe the predator-prey relationships that exist. The equations for the number of organisms per species were derived and additive environmental stochasticity or noise are added to each equation. The noise is assumed to come from an extreme value distribution or Gumbel distribution to reflect …

Quantifying Soil And Groundwater Chemistry In Areas Invaded By Tamarix Spp. Along The Middle Rio Grande, New Mexico, Michelle Kelly Ohrtman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tamarix spp. (a.k.a. saltcedar, tamarisk) invasion is considered a major ecological threat at both national and global levels, with supposed impacts on soil and water chemistry. One of the most often cited mechanisms of ecosystem change by Tamarix is through its ability to deposit salty exudates and salt-rich leaf litter. The degree to which Tamarix relates to elevated soil and groundwater salinity, however, has not been adequately quantified, especially in the context of environmental factors that may also influence salinity. If Tamarix does elevate localized salinity by means of uptake, concentration and exudation by plant tissues, then we might expect …

Japan's Preventive Strategy: Secure The World—The National Defense Program Guidelines In And After Fy 2010, Tadashi Watanabe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Japanese government is now reviewing the National Defense Program Guidelines in and after FY 2005 (NDPG 04), and this review will be completed by the end of this year. Even though NDPG 04 provides Japan's security and defense policy vision to FY 2014, the government nevertheless has decided to change it completely. The purpose of this thesis is to know the reason why the Japanese government has decided to change NDPG 04 completely, the likely contents of NDPG 09, and NDPG 09's effect on the US-Japan alliance.

The globalizing international society and threats have been increasingly diversified and multi-polarized …
