Combating A Religious Radical Ideology V. Suppressing Islamic Opposition: Jordan’S Approach To Counterterrorism, Abeer Ghazi Jarrar
Combating A Religious Radical Ideology V. Suppressing Islamic Opposition: Jordan’S Approach To Counterterrorism, Abeer Ghazi Jarrar
Cornell Law School Inter-University Graduate Student Conference Papers
In the aftermath of 9/11, criminal law reform in Jordan was part of the worldwide expansion of criminal laws facilitated by UNSC Resolution 1373 that was enacted under mandatory Chapter VII of the UN Charter. The introduced criminal law amendments were largely offered as a symbolic response to 9/11; it was built on the assumption of inadequacy of criminal law without fully understanding the dimensions of deterrence. Probably with the exception of the new laws against the financing of terrorism, the state had a whole range of extraordinary measures available if not morally, then practically, to counter terrorism.
Jordan’s experience …
Arsenic And Old Chemistry: Images Of Mad Alchemists, Experts Attacking Experts, And The Crisis In Forensic Science, David S. Caudill
Arsenic And Old Chemistry: Images Of Mad Alchemists, Experts Attacking Experts, And The Crisis In Forensic Science, David S. Caudill
Working Paper Series
Drawing on research into the use of experts in early 19th-century criminal trials, the image of mad alchemists in popular culture representations of science, and the distinction between empirical and contingent “interpretive repertoires” in the discourse of scientific controversies, this article explores the controversy over arsenic-detection technologies prior to the Marsh test. In addition to noting the predictable criticism of incompetent expertise in the service of law, this article highlights implied accusations of hubris and amorality on the part of over-confident experts, both in the early 19th-century and in today's crisis of forensic science.

It should help in assessing the desirability and efficacy of private enforcement - information that may prove useful to jurisdictions contemplating a private right of action for competition cases.
An Exploratory Study Of Adherence To Prescribed Health Care Recommendations Among A Community Sample Of Drug Users And Non-Drug Users From Similar Neighborhoods In Miami-Dade County, Karen L. Pierre
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation had three specific aims: to estimate the prevalence of adherence among drug users, to determine whether drug use was directly associated with adherence, and to assess whether factors drawn from the Behavioral Model of Health Care Utilization (BMHCU) are associated with adherence. The self-reported prevalence of adherence to prescribed health care recommendations in the past 12 months among the community sample of drug users and non-drug users from similar low-income areas in the study sample ranged from 53%-74%. Non-drug users consistently had higher rates of adherence than drug users, except for adherence to female health care recommendations, yet …

School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau
School Experiences Of Foster Children As Seen Through The Eyes Of Teachers, Lynda Bonneau
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored the school experiences of foster children by asking their teachers how they perceive them academically, socially and behaviorally. Foster children, who have generally experienced adverse life circumstances, are prone to have academic and behavioral trouble in school; many drop out before completing high school. This research focused on assessing how teachers cope with the unique challenges these students present, their suggestions for how they could be supported in school, and recommendations in terms of teacher training for working with this group. Eight public school teachers of foster children from two urban schools in Rhode Island were …

Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams
Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams
Student Theses
As more scholarly and research materials are created in digital formats, institutions charged with managing, preserving, and disseminating these materials are increasingly adopting specialized software tools and environments created to fulfill these functions. Concurrently, subscriptions to serials databases provided by academic publishers are increasingly prohibitive and problematic. This paper surveys the adoption of digital institutional repositories by research institutions in the New York City region as of the Spring of 2009, and concludes that in spite of their potential advantages these systems are still not widely applied toward addressing the issues of preservation and access to their fullest potential.
Implementation Of New Childcare Policies In New Orleans, Mary Katherine Ives
Implementation Of New Childcare Policies In New Orleans, Mary Katherine Ives
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The high number of working parents in the U.S. means that there are millions of child in need to care during working hours. Research shows that the quality of this care is of high importance in a child's development, both in the short-term and the long-term. States have used a variety of policy tools to regulate child care and to attempt to improve the quality of care. Louisiana has recently implemented a new policy called the Quality Rating System. Directors of centers in Orleans Parish, Louisiana, were interviewed to determine the impact of participation in QRS. Centers are struggling to …

Policing And Firearms: Exploring Data Collection Practices And Attitudes Toward Gun Control, Adam V. Moltisanti
Policing And Firearms: Exploring Data Collection Practices And Attitudes Toward Gun Control, Adam V. Moltisanti
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this exploratory investigation was to measure what, if any, differences exist between law enforcement and non law enforcement personnel in their opinions towards gun control, as well as investigate the types of information that are recorded in police reports. Using a test population of police officers (n = 90) and students (n = 131), a self administered, anonymous survey was used to test the hypotheses that police officers are a) more likely to support gun control policies, b) more likely to view gun control policies as increasing community and police safety, c) more likely to view gun …

During the spring of 2006, a new program was instated at West Virginia University that provided an arena for undergraduate Criminology majors and residents of a correctional facility to discuss and learn about issues within the criminal justice system. The class took place at a correctional facility. After leaving the class, the students were expected to write a reflection paper on the discussions that took place within the classroom to return at the next session. The purpose of this research is to conduct a thorough analysis of the reflection papers of each student across the 15 weeks. The findings suggest …
Establishing The Digital Chain Of Evidence In Biometric Systems, Nick Bartlow
Establishing The Digital Chain Of Evidence In Biometric Systems, Nick Bartlow
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Traditionally, a chain of evidence or chain of custody refers to the chronological documentation, or paper trail, showing the seizure, custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposition of evidence, physical or electronic. Whether in the criminal justice system, military applications, or natural disasters, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of such chains is of paramount importance. Intentional or unintentional alteration, tampering, or fabrication of digital evidence can lead to undesirable effects. We find despite the consequences at stake, historically, no unique protocol or standardized procedure exists for establishing such chains. Current practices rely on traditional paper trails and handwritten signatures as the …

A Book Review Of Laura Ellingson’S Engaging Crystallization In Qualitative Research: An Introduction, Ronald J. Cugno, Kathy Thomas
A Book Review Of Laura Ellingson’S Engaging Crystallization In Qualitative Research: An Introduction, Ronald J. Cugno, Kathy Thomas
The Qualitative Report
Ellingson (2009) might be the first qualitative researcher to contextualize "crystallization" as a formalized sub-methodology for conducting qualitative research using a nontraditional approach. For Ellingson "crystallization depends upon including, interweaving, blending, or otherwise drawing upon more than one genre of expressing data" (p. 11). Epistemologically, Ellingson’s feminist and social constructivist approach moves her notion of crystallization past positivism on one end and radical interpretivism on the other end of the qualitative research continuum. She looks beyond the established focus of traditional qualitative research to present crystallization as a holistic approach and "radical way of knowing" (Ellis & Ellingson, 2000, p. …

Eyewitness Recall Of Noncriminal Events: An Examination Of Demographic Characteristics With A Selected Population., Jessica R. Vaneaton
Eyewitness Recall Of Noncriminal Events: An Examination Of Demographic Characteristics With A Selected Population., Jessica R. Vaneaton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine differences of recalled events from a selected university student population. Eyewitness testimony is frequently used to convict defendants each year. Many of these convictions are based solely on eyewitness accounts. While much has been written on the reliability of eyewitness testimony, little is known about demographic characteristic differences that may exist. A videotaped event was shown to a sample of college students who were then asked to complete a questionnaire based on what they watched. There were significant differences found in the respondents‟ accuracy in recalling events of the video according to …

Examining Orders Of Protection: An Analysis Of The Court System In A Rural Tennessee County., Jaclyn Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
To provide safety to domestic violence victims, law reform efforts provided victims with a civil remedy in which a judge orders the abuser to stay away from the victim.
The research uses 1 rural county judicial system data to evaluate protective orders. Findings indicate that 42% of petitions are dismissed by petitioner's request or failure to prosecute. Moreover, court fees are not recouped in 79% of the cases.
Logistic regression analysis indicate that an intimate relationship between the parties and payment of court costs by petitioner increased the probability of dismissal of petition upon petitioner's request; use of a gun …
