“We Are God’S Children, Y’All:” Race, Gender, And Sexuality In Lesbian- And Gay-Affirming Congregations, Krista Mcqueeney

Criminology Faculty Publications

This article examines how lesbian, gay, and straight-but-affirming members of lesbian- and gay-affirming churches in the South challenged a deep-rooted Christian belief in homosexual sin. Data are taken from 200 hours of participant observation and 25 in-depth interviews in two Protestant churches: one predominantly black, working class, lesbian, and evangelical, and the other mostly white, middle class, heterosexual, and liberal. I identify three strategies lesbian, gay, and straight-but-affirming church members used to accommodate—but not assimilate—to heteronormative conceptions of the “good Christian.” First, some black lesbians minimized their sexuality as secondary to the Christian identity. Second, most lesbian and gay members—both …

Program - Calvin Symposium On Worship: Word, Music, Vision, Action

Symposium on Worship Archive

We wrote this welcome letter during Epiphany, remembering how the star of Bethlehem drew the Maji to the place where the Christ child lay. They came from the Middle East, possibly from Iraq, and they traveled to Bethlehem–troubled spots then and still now, occupied territories with terrible violence. They were looking for the newborn King, not knowing whom they were seeking, but following the star. We pray that each of you also came to seek the light of Christ, to offer him your gifts of praise, returning to Christ the gifts already received–in preaching, music, drama, visual arts, and hospitality. …

Religious Educators: Promoting Servant Leadership, Shane D. Lavery Jan 2009

Religious Educators: Promoting Servant Leadership, Shane D. Lavery

Education Papers and Journal Articles

The purpose of this article is twofold. First, it proposes that servant leadership is a suitable model of leadership for religious educators. Second, it suggests reasons why religious educators should exercise servant leadership.

The paper briefly considers the history of leadership development, per se. The concept of servant leadership is then explored with particular reference to four Gospel texts: Mk 10:42-45, Mt 23:8-12, Lk 22:24-27; and Jn 13:12-17. Three reasons are then presented as to why religious educators should choose to exercise and model servant leadership for their students. These are: servant leadership is the way Jesus exercised leadership; servant …

Proclamation Vs. Protection: Reshaping The Vision Of Adventist Youth Ministry, Ronald R. Pickell Jan 2009

Proclamation Vs. Protection: Reshaping The Vision Of Adventist Youth Ministry, Ronald R. Pickell

180 Symposium Publications

In this chapter, the author argues that youth ministry in the Adventist church has focused on protection and retention of the youth that have grown up in the denomination. To achieve this goal, the majority of the denomination’s resources have been invested into the educational system (I). Drawing attention to some of the short-comings of this approach, the author suggests a transition to a proclamation model of ministry and provides some basic principles (II). Furthermore, he draws attention to the increasing number of Adventist youth studying outside the denominational educational system and argues that it is both urgent and opportune …

Church Climate And Youth Ministry, Barry Gane Jan 2009

Church Climate And Youth Ministry, Barry Gane

180 Symposium Publications

This paper compares youth who belong to congregations with a strong program of youth ministry with those who do not. Those who experience youth ministry are more likely to have personal devotions, remain in the church, perceive the pastors’ influence more positively, and avoid at-risk behaviors. It stresses the need for personal involvement, demonstrations of caring, and willingness to make changes in congregational programming. It gives a number of suggestions for discussions with youth groups.

'Doing Religion' Overseas: The Characteristics And Functions Of Ghanaian Immigrant Churches In Toronto, Canada, Mensah Jan 2009

'Doing Religion' Overseas: The Characteristics And Functions Of Ghanaian Immigrant Churches In Toronto, Canada, Mensah

Societies Without Borders

While the importance of immigrants' transnational economic activities is readily acknowledged, the cultural factors that facilitate their initiation and sustenance of memberships in multiple locations have been overlooked. It is this lacuna that the present study addresses, using Ghanaian immigrant churches in Toronto as a case study. The paper examines how Ghanaian immigrant churches were founded; how they are organized; and the kinds of social services they provide. While the churches facilitate the settlement of Ghanaian immigrants, through the provision of social services, they seem to, inadvertently, undermine their eventual integration into the broader Canadian society.
