Heitor Villa-Lobos's Mômoprecóce Fantasy For Piano And Orchestra (1919-1929): An Historical, Stylistic, And Interpretative Study, Simone Azevedo Leitão

Open Access Dissertations

The life and works of the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) have been well documented. However, a comprehensive study concerning any of his nine works for piano and orchestra has not been undertaken. Among this prolific output, the Mômoprecóce, fantasie pour piano et orchestra, stands as a faithful representation of the composer's skillful orchestration, descriptive piano writing through the observation of a childhood universe, and his multi-faceted approach to nationalism. The fantasy is a through-composed arrangement of a previous solo piano suite by Villa-Lobos entitled, Carnaval das crianças brasileiras (Brazilian Children's Carnival, 1919). This research aims to investigate the historic, …

Uncertainty In Measurements And Cognitive Engineering Analysis Of A Decision Support System For Power System Reconfiguration, Venkata Krishna Pendurthi Dec 2009

Uncertainty In Measurements And Cognitive Engineering Analysis Of A Decision Support System For Power System Reconfiguration, Venkata Krishna Pendurthi

Theses and Dissertations

Accuracy of the measurement data used for the decision making process or for shipboard operations and control is very important to ensure the reliability and survivability. The uncertainties present in measurement data need to be minimized for reliable system operation. In this work, a fuzzy logic based model is developed to deal with uncertainty in the meter data. Operational and historical parameters of the meters were used to determine a ‘trust’ value of individual meter. A fuzzy correction system for measurement data was used to generate an input dataset for a genetic algorithm based reconfiguration system. Additionally, with the goal …

Social Networking Systems Success Model: Assessment And Validation Of The Is Success Model In Social Context, Aaron Michael French

Theses and Dissertations

Developments such as the ubiquity of electronic networks and the breadth of digital platforms beyond simple forums have lead to major economic and social transformations worldwide (Agarwal et al, 2008). This research will explore developments in the area of social networking using Internet technology in order to determine factors that lead to success. Despite considerable growth among the number of online communities available, very few are successful at retaining members and continued usage by its members (Ma & Agarwal, 2007). The purpose of this dissertation is to determine factors leading to a successful social networking site (SNS). Through the unification …

Inequality And Body Mass In Young Adulthood: Sex And Age Differences In Associated Effects, Jamie Lynn Boydstun

Theses and Dissertations

Approximately 63 percent of the U.S. adults are overweight or obese, however all groups are not affected equally. Little research has observed the obese compared to the overweight. A Cross Cultural Validation Of Perceptions And Use Of Social Network Service: An Exploratory Study, Chengqi Guo Dec 2009

A Cross Cultural Validation Of Perceptions And Use Of Social Network Service: An Exploratory Study, Chengqi Guo

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid developments Social Network Service (SNS) have offered opportunities to re-visit many seminal theoretical assumptions of technology usage within socio-technical environment. Online social network is a rapidly growing field that imposes new questions to the existing IS research paradigm. It is argued that information systems research must necessarily evolve in response to the emerging trends (Lyytinen and King, 2004). Specifically, one stream of research has been heavily lacking is SNS usage prediction (Hargittai, 2007). In SNS, the form of social network is realized by computing networks where the individual assumes an identity of an “avatar”. People are merging their …

An Exploratory Study Of The Effect Of Instruction On Student, Gladys E. Vint Dec 2009

An Exploratory Study Of The Effect Of Instruction On Student, Gladys E. Vint

Theses and Dissertations

Although substantial research has been conducted regarding the instruction of reading, students are still not reaching a desired level of reading competency (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). The Reading First program was established to address this dilemma. In order to examine the impact the Reading First method of teaching reading had on the schools in Arkansas, a population was identified and classified into four categories: funded Reading First and non-funded Reading First, and matched control groups for both funded and non-funded. These schools were followed for three years, first grade through the third grade year, by obtaining achievement data obtained …
