Burst The Bystander Effect: Making A Discipling Difference With Young Adults, A. Allan Martin Jan 2009

Burst The Bystander Effect: Making A Discipling Difference With Young Adults, A. Allan Martin

180 Symposium Publications

Decades of research continue to point to greater than 50 percent attrition of young adults from faith community, yet there appears to be minimal efforts to change this alarming trend. This article offers suggestions as to what you can do to foster authentic relationships and revive young adult discipleship in the Seventh-day Adventist Church context.

Handing On Faith: Equipping The Next Generation To ”Leave Church”!, Peter Roennfeldt Jan 2009

Handing On Faith: Equipping The Next Generation To ”Leave Church”!, Peter Roennfeldt

180 Symposium Publications

In view of the continuing high attrition of next generations from the Adventist church, perhaps, like with effective parenting, the best the church can do is to equip the next generation to “leave church” — releasing them to give birth to the next generation of Adventism. This involves trust — trusting the next generations, and trusting God with the future of his church.

Bringing Home Our Adventist Prodigals, Paul Tompkins Jan 2009

Bringing Home Our Adventist Prodigals, Paul Tompkins

180 Symposium Publications

Studies agree that the church is losing a significant proportion of its young people. This trend is hurting families, congregations and the church as a whole but very little seems to be done about it. Now is the time to do so. Back in the 1990’s the church last looked at restructuring youth ministry — following a commission on youth, the autumn council of 1992 voted a six point plan including revival, recovery, evangelism and nurture. A strategic plan was also authorized but the aspect of recovery has only recently begun to gain significant attention. Now is the time to …

Beetles, Frogs, And Lawyers: The Scientific Demarcation Problem In The Gilson Theory Of Value Creation, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2009

Beetles, Frogs, And Lawyers: The Scientific Demarcation Problem In The Gilson Theory Of Value Creation, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Recently, Ronald Gilson described a transactional lawyer turned law professor as someone who was a beetle, but became an entomologist. This is not the first non-mammalian metaphor used by an economically inclined legal academic to demarcate those who study and those who are studied. As Richard Posner so colorfully explained rational actors as they appear to economists studying them objectively: "it would not be a solecism to speak of a rational frog." In this short essay, I suggest that both say something about the prevailing view of theorizing that is entitled to privileged epistemic status in the legal academy. Some …

A Rhetorician's View Of Religious Speech In Civic Argument, Jack L. Sammors Jan 2009

A Rhetorician's View Of Religious Speech In Civic Argument, Jack L. Sammors

Seattle University Law Review

I first examine and reject liberal political methods of addressing the question of religious speech in civic argument, all of which depend upon norms external to the argument that are then excluded from it. Next, in proposing a method that relies only upon the constitutive norms of civic argument itself, I offer a description of civic argument as rhetoric, examine the risks of religious rhetoric in this civic argument, and examine the constitutive norms of civic argument. I address whether the constitutive norms of civic argument are sufficient restraints upon religious rhetoric such that reliance upon external norms is not …

Whale Watching From 200 Feet Below: A New Approach To Resolving Operational Encroachment Issues, Aaron M. Riggio Jan 2009

Whale Watching From 200 Feet Below: A New Approach To Resolving Operational Encroachment Issues, Aaron M. Riggio

Seattle University Law Review

Military training objectives and environmental protection have been at odds for years. One can argue, not unconvincingly, that military training by land, air, or sea is inherently antithetical to environmental protection. The essential goal of the armed forces—to protect the sovereign territories of the United States—requires each uniformed service to be ready to engage hostile enemies in any locale with destructive impact. The emergence of strong national environmental protection laws presents a fundamental conflict for military leadership. The term “operational encroachment” has been used to encapsulate the description of this often abrasive relationship.

Most environmental laws contain provisions to allow …

The Purpose Of Facebook: The Value Of Facebook Friends In Increasing Self-Perceived Popularity, Michael J. Cronin Jan 2009

The Purpose Of Facebook: The Value Of Facebook Friends In Increasing Self-Perceived Popularity, Michael J. Cronin

Honors Program Theses

A survey of 407 students was conducted at a medium-sized Midwestern university to examine what motivates college students to have friends on Facebook. The goal of the study was to see if people interact with more Facebook friends than they do offline friends on a regular basis and to see if the primary reason students become friends with others on Facebook is to increase their popularity. The results suggest that students do not become Facebook friends with others to increase their popularity, which is in contrast to previous research. Results were inconclusive in determining if people regularly interact with more …

The Influence Of Individualist-Collectivist Values, Attitudes Toward Women, And Proenvironmental Orientation On Landscape Preference, Jessica L. Wilson Jan 2009

The Influence Of Individualist-Collectivist Values, Attitudes Toward Women, And Proenvironmental Orientation On Landscape Preference, Jessica L. Wilson

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore individual variables affecting preferences for natural or managed landscapes. Environmental attitudes and value systems of student participants (N = 147) were assessed using the revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scale and the Scenarios for the Measurement of Collectivism and Individualism (SMCI) scale, respectively. In addition, feminist orientation was assessed using the Attitudes toward Woman scale (AWS). The hypothesis that proenvironmental attitudes would be positively correlated with a preference for natural landscapes was supported. However, hypotheses that alignment with collectivist values would correlate positively with a preference for natural landscapes and that a …

Arrow’S Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew Bodie Jan 2009

Arrow’S Theorem And The Exclusive Shareholder Franchise, Grant M. Hayden, Matthew Bodie

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In this Essay, we contest one of the main arguments for restricting corporate board voting to shareholders. In justifying the limitation of the franchise to shareholders, scholars have repeatedly turned to social choice theory — specifically, Arrow's theorem — to justify the exclusive shareholder franchise. Citing to the theorem, corporate law commentators have argued that lumping different groups of stakeholders together into the electorate would result in a lack of consensus and, ultimately, the lack of coherence that attends intransitive social choices, perhaps even leading the corporation to self-destruct. We contend that this argument is misguided. First, we argue that …

Theories Of Poverty/The Poverty Of Theory, Barbara Stark Jan 2009

Theories Of Poverty/The Poverty Of Theory, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The world has never been richer. At the same time, the number of people living in poverty has increased by almost 100 million and the chasm between the rich and the poor has become unfathomable. In 2004, 969 million people lived on less than a dollar a day. As former World Bank President Robert McNamara summed up, these people experience "a condition of life so characterized by malnutrition, illiteracy, disease, squalid surroundings, high infant mortality and low life expectancy as to be beneath any reasonable definition of human decency."' Yet there are more billionaires than ever before, people who have …

Living With Stress: Neighborhood Disadvantage, Social Capital, And Depression, John Porter Lillis Jan 2009

Living With Stress: Neighborhood Disadvantage, Social Capital, And Depression, John Porter Lillis

All ETDs from UAB

This study's objective was to determine the effects of personal and neighborhood stressors on depressive symptomology for community dwelling adults aged 65 and over. The psychosocial resource model was employed as social capital is hypothesized to be a resource and play a mediating role in the effect of both types of stressors on depressive symptomology. Individual level data utilized came from the UAB Study of Aging (N = 919) and the neighborhood level data came from the 2000 Decennial Census. Logistic regression analysis determined that neighborhood stressors had no direct or indirect effect on depressive symptomology. This analysis did show …

Stress And Support Among Southern Lesbians: An Application Of The Stress Process Model, Jay A. Irwin Jan 2009

Stress And Support Among Southern Lesbians: An Application Of The Stress Process Model, Jay A. Irwin

All ETDs from UAB

The research question to be addressed in this dissertation is: Among adult Southern lesbians, does stress, social support, family ties, and social capital affect feelings of well-being among adult lesbians? Well-being is operationalized as depressive symptoms in this investigation. A study of this magnitude has not been conducted on such a population in previous work, either in sexuality research, or in the stress literature. This dissertation uses the stress process model as the main theoretical perspective and contributes to the existing literature on minority populations regarding the importance of stress, resources, and mental health. Lesbians in the Southern region of …

Faith And Politics In The Post-Secular Age: The Promise Of President Obama, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2009

Faith And Politics In The Post-Secular Age: The Promise Of President Obama, Francis J. Mootz Iii

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

If the modern era is properly characterized as the 'age of secularism' - a time when constitutional democracies finally have shed the last vestiges of church authority from the political realm and embrace a rationalist and humanist perspective - then the United States appears to be outside the Western mainstream. In this paper I explore how the relationship between politics and religious faith in the United States might be seen as part of the narrative of secularism that defines most other Western countries, even as the differences in the American experience might suggest an evolution of this narrative. My thesis …
