Democratic Discussion, Kinder R. Donald, Don Herzog
Democratic Discussion, Kinder R. Donald, Don Herzog
Book Chapters
In this piece one of the country’s most accomplished survey researchers joins forces with a major democratic theorist (they happen to be colleagues at the same institution, the University of Michigan)—and together they try to reconcile what might seem irreconcilable: survey research findings about voter ignorance, on the one hand, with John Stuart Mill’s ideal of government by discussion, on the other. Read them carefully to ascertain the basis of reconciliation, for it is subtle: they extrapolate from John Dewey’s concept of “contingent social practices.” That is undoubtedly a mouthful, but it implies—as you will see—that the relative political sophistication …
Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams
Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams
Articles
This article explores the use of rubrics as tools for assessing the quality of university-developed strategic plans. While tools exist for assessing the quality of the planning process, such tools are not readily available for assessing the resulting product or the overall quality of the plan itself. Specifi cally, a rubric is described that has been designed and fi eld-tested for the purpose of evaluating the strategic planning document produced at the university level. This approach builds upon outcome assessment methods developed in the business sector and proposes a tool tailored for use in higher education.
Media Literacy, Brian O'Neill, Ingun Hagen
Media Literacy, Brian O'Neill, Ingun Hagen
Books/Book chapters
Across Europe and beyond, the promotion of media literacy, for children and adults, has acquired an important public urgency. Traditional literacy is seen to be no longer sufficient for participation in today’s society. Citizens need to be media literate, it is claimed, to enable them to cope more effectively with the flood of information in today’s highly mediated societies. As teachers, politicians and policy makers everywhere struggle with this rapid shift in media culture, greater responsibility is placed on citizens for their own welfare in the new media environment. Media literacy is therefore all the more essential in enabling citizens …
Benefits Of Using Primary Sources In The High School United States History Classroom, Norene Lee Osborne
Benefits Of Using Primary Sources In The High School United States History Classroom, Norene Lee Osborne
All Graduate Projects
History textbooks have not traditionally included the perspectives of the whole of society. The contributions of non-whites, women, the poor and the illiterate are consistently forgotten or ignored in the history classroom. When the stories of these groups are present, the content is incomplete and minimal, due to the resources available to the teacher within the curriculum provided by the textbook manufacturers or the school districts. Primary sources, or first hand accounts of history, can be used to supplement gaps in the curriculum, allowing students to construct a more authentic and complete knowledge of history. This project includes practical supplemental …
Targeting Tuberculars: Social Stigma And Public Health Campaigns, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr
Targeting Tuberculars: Social Stigma And Public Health Campaigns, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr
History Department Faculty Publications
In the fight against tuberculosis one major obstacle is the social stigma associated with the disease. Stigma, which is both relational and contextual, marks the body of the tubercular as a site of danger. This essay reflects on the social history of tuberculosis and proposes that stigma’s contingent history in the Philippines can be traced to public health campaigns carried out during the twentieth century, which sought to segregate and isolate the tubercular to limit contagion but could not provide an effective cure. The stigmatization of tuberculosis persists at present, and public health campaigns may need to address stigma directly.
Educating Citizens Building Communities: Annual Membership Survey Results - Executive Summary, Campus Compact
Educating Citizens Building Communities: Annual Membership Survey Results - Executive Summary, Campus Compact
Higher Education
Campus Compact conducts an annual survey of its member colleges and universities to—among other things—gauge student and faculty involvement in service and service-learning, assess institutional support and culture for service and service-learning, identify the types of courses and programs offered as well as the issues being addressed through service, and identify the nature of campus-community partnerships. This publication provides an executive summary of our major findings in 2009.
Community-Engaged Scholarship In Ffigher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley
Community-Engaged Scholarship In Ffigher Education: An Expanding Experience, Judith A. Ramaley
Higher Education
Higher education in this country has always been expected to serve the public good. Sometimes, the emphasis is on preparing educated citizens or practitioners in especially critical fields and how public service can deepen and enrich learning and prepare students to lead purposeful, responsible, and creative lives. Sometimes the focus is upon institutions themselves as major intellectual and cultural resources for a community. In this paper, based on the keynote presentation at the Community Engaged Scholarship for Health Collaborative's invitational symposium, the author explores four levels of engagement: the individual, the academic community and its concepts of scholarship, the institution …

This senior project describes why high school students in Pico Rivera are not going on to pursue higher education. It starts by taking a look at the Pico Rivera community as a whole and later it focuses specifically on high school age youth. It outlines the problems, root causes, and offers a solution. It creates a template that non-profits or other organizations can use to help high school youth understand the college application process better in order to encourage them to pursue higher education. This paper is directed towards community leaders and non-profit mangers to help them understand and address …
A Success Story In Shifting The Paradigm Together : Partnership Between Service And Education In Building An Onsite Clinical Nurse Leader Program, Enna Edouard Trevathan
A Success Story In Shifting The Paradigm Together : Partnership Between Service And Education In Building An Onsite Clinical Nurse Leader Program, Enna Edouard Trevathan
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Access to advanced academic preparation has been an important consideration in the design of educational programs for the working professional nurse. Nursing education has a history of developing and implementing strategies to respond to their needs beyond the traditional, on campus classroom setting. Nursing programs were early adopters of distance learning technologies, from the first two-way audio, one-way video classes, to satellite, two-way video classes to the recent proliferation of web-based programs. However, an innovative alternative is proposed - bringing the course work to the employment setting and designing the program to be responsive to the learning needs of the …

Elder Activities: Patterns, Motives, And Interpretation. Massachusetts Lifestyles Study Iii, Francis G. Caro, Jeffrey A. Burr, Eilon Caspi, Jan E. Mutchler
Gerontology Institute Publications
We are engaged in a continuing effort to understand the scope of elder activity and the implications of activity for well-being. We are particularly interested in the forces that encourage or inhibit multiple forms of activity, the ways in which participation in some activities influences participation in other activities, and the cumulative implications of activities for well being. Our interest in multiple forms of activities sets us somewhat apart from Gerontologists who focus on single forms of activity such as volunteering, taking classes, caring for grandchildren, working, or exercising.

Elder Economic Security Initiative™ Program: The Elder Economic Security Standard™ Index For Minnesota, Gerontology Institute, University Of Massachusetts Boston, Wider Opportunities For Women
Gerontology Institute Publications
This report addresses income adequacy for Minnesota’s older adults using the national WOW-GI National Elder Economic Security Standard Index (“the Elder Index”) methodology. The Elder Index benchmarks basic costs of living for elder households and illustrates how costs of living vary geographically and are based on the characteristics of elder households, including household size, home ownership or renter status, and health status. The costs are based on market costs for basic needs of elder households and do not assume any public or private supports.
Race, Politics, And Public Housekeeping: Contending Forces In Pauline Hopkins’S Boston, Betsy Klima
Race, Politics, And Public Housekeeping: Contending Forces In Pauline Hopkins’S Boston, Betsy Klima
Trotter Review
For Pauline Hopkins, the decision to present readers with a fictional yet faithful portrayal of urban African-American life centered in Boston, which at that time was the capital of African-American advancement, was political. In her introduction to Contending Forces (1900), she writes: “Fiction is of great value to any people as a preserver of manners and customs—religious, political and social. It is a record of growth and development from generation to generation. No one will do this for us; we must ourselves develop the men and women who will faithfully portray the inmost thoughts and feelings of the Negro with …

The six articles that constitute this special issue are described in terms of this framework. A brief review of the articles is provided in which we indicate the question addressed, the factors taken into account, the nature of the research, and the dominant theory and perspective used in …
Racial Exhaustion, Darren Lenard Hutchinson
Racial Exhaustion, Darren Lenard Hutchinson
UF Law Faculty Publications
Contemporary political and legal discourse on questions of race unveils a tremendous perceptual gap among persons of color and whites. Opinion polls consistently demonstrate that persons of color commonly view race and racial discrimination as important factors shaping their opportunities for economic and social advancement. Whites, on the other hand, often discount race as a pertinent factor in contemporary United States society. Consequently, polling data show that whites typically reject racial explanations for acute disparities in important socio-economic indicators, such as education, criminal justice, employment, wealth, and health care. Echoing this public sentiment, social movement actors, politicians, and the Supreme …

Happiness, Efficiency, And The Promise Of Decisional Equity: From Outcome To Process, Jeffrey L. Harrison
UF Law Faculty Publications
This article explains why outcome-oriented goals like efficiency, happiness, or well-being are ultimately of limited use as goals for law. Part II places happiness research in the context of past efforts to assess efficiency standards. Part III outlines the schism between efficiency and happiness and examines whether they can be reconciled. Part IV discusses the problems of relying on direct measures of happiness. The concept of decisional equity is described and examined in Part V.

KSU Press Legacy Project
The Doctoral Degree in English Education gathers the testimonies of graduate students and their professors, mostly former public school language arts teachers, as they develop their abilities as English teachers, earn the most advanced degree in their field, become professional leaders, and begin teaching at the university level. Responding to an on-going national shortage of professors of English education, this book provides first-hand information on deciding to pursue a doctorate, undertaking graduate studies, teaching university methods courses, writing dissertations, and entering the field as a professor of English education.

The Coevolution Of Networks And Political Attitudes, David Lazer, Brian Rubineau, Carol Chetkovich, Nancy Katz, Michael Neblo
The Coevolution Of Networks And Political Attitudes, David Lazer, Brian Rubineau, Carol Chetkovich, Nancy Katz, Michael Neblo
Working Papers
How do attitudes and social affiliations co-evolve? A long stream of research has focused on the relationship between attitudes and social affiliations. However, in most of this research the causal relationship between views and affiliations is difficult to discern definitively: Do people influence each other’s views so that they converge over time or do they primarily affiliate (by choice or happenstance) with those of similar views? Here we use longitudinal attitudinal and whole network data collected at critical times (notably, at the inception of the system) to identify robustly the determinants of attitudes and affiliations. We find significant conformity tendencies: …
Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean
Economic Credit In Renaissance Florence, John Padgett, Paul D. Mclean
Working Papers
What were the social and institutional factors that led to, and reinforced, the
precocious emergence of Florentine commercial capitalism,3 especially in the domain of
international merchant-banking? The dominant stream of answers, emphasized by
economic historians and by economists, focuses on the invention in late-medieval and
Renaissance Italy of a variety of innovative business techniques – bills of exchange,
double-entry bookkeeping, partnership contracts, commercial courts. If these impressive
organizational inventions are interpreted as facets of a broader rise of impersonal market
rationality, then a tension emerges in Florentine, and indeed in European, historiography
between economic historians and the work of social …
The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad
The Lasting Effect Of Civic Talk On Civic Participation: Evidence From A Panel Study, Casey A. Klofstad
Working Papers
Extant research shows that individuals who discuss politics and current events with their peers also participate more actively in civil society. However, this correlation is not sufficient evidence of causation due to a number of analytical biases. To address this problem, data were collected through a panel study conducted on students at a large public university in the Midwestern United States. These data show that discussing politics and current events caused these students to participate in civic activities during their first year of college. A follow-up study conducted on the same population during their fourth year of college shows that …
Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich
Healing The Rift? Social Networks And Reconciliation Between Obama And Clinton Delegates In 2008, Michael Heaney, Seth Masket, Joanne Miller, Dara Strolovich
Working Papers
Which factors allowed the Democratic Party to heal the rift created by the 2008 presidential nominating campaign? Using original data from surveys of 449 pledged delegates at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, this research examines the conditions under which the delegates for one candidate embrace the opposing candidate. Specifically, when do delegates for Barack Obama embrace Hillary Clinton, and vice versa? The results demonstrate that Clinton delegates’ network centrality in the convention caucus network exacerbates, rather than heals, the rift in the party. Clinton delegates’ friendship networks perpetuate the rift when they are homophilous, but contribute to healing when they …
Good Edge, Bad Edge: How Network Structure Affects A Group’S Ability To Coordinate, Daniel P. Enemark, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Ramamohan Paturi, Nicholas Weller
Good Edge, Bad Edge: How Network Structure Affects A Group’S Ability To Coordinate, Daniel P. Enemark, Mathew D. Mccubbins, Ramamohan Paturi, Nicholas Weller
Working Papers
Coordination is a core concern in social science. Problems as diverse as deciding where to go to dinner, what price to charge for a good or service, which political candidate to support or what regulatory policy to adopt all contain coordination as a core element. Most coordination problems arise among actors connected in a network, and these connections can both improve and impede a group’s ability to achieve coordination. To model how links influence coordination we distinguish between “constraining edges” that make coordination harder by reducing the number of equilibrium outcomes, and “redundant edges” that make coordination easier by merely …
Beyond Corporate Social Responsibility: Reconciling The Ideals Of A For-Benefit Corporation With Director Fiduciary Duties In The U.S. And Europe, Alissa Mickels
UC Law SF International Law Review
Traditionally, organizations are divided into three sectors: for-profit, non-profit, and the government. Over the past few decades, a new Fourth Sector of organizations has been emerging in the U.S. and abroad. These "Fourth Sector" organizations attempt to integrate social purposes with business methods as seamlessly as possible. A few social entrepreneurs take a more ambitious approach to this "hybrid" approach and are creating For-Benefit corporations that, in addition to integrating social purposes with business methods, adopt a corporate policy to benefit all stakeholders, require inclusive governance and ownership, accountability, and transparency. Will the law allow these For-Benefit corporations to benefit …

[Review Of] Fire And Ink: An Anthology Of Social Action Writing. Eds. Frances Payne Adler, Debra Busman, And Diana García, Rigoberto González
Ethnic Studies Review
By keeping their opening remarks very brief (the preface plus the micro-introduction add up to less than seven pages), the editors have made an unassuming choice: to let the work by the contributors do the talking. In other projects, this plunge into creative material without providing much of a historical or literary context might come across as daring, and with an anthology of social action writing, that risk may or may not pay off. The expectation of Fire and Ink, it appears, is that the reader (or instructor) will have some basic knowledge of activist writers and the range of …
