The Effects Of Marriage On Psychological Well-Being Focusing On Motherhood Status Prior To Marriage, Hyeyoung Woo, R. Kelly Raley Jan 2009

The Effects Of Marriage On Psychological Well-Being Focusing On Motherhood Status Prior To Marriage, Hyeyoung Woo, R. Kelly Raley

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

A substantial number of studies suggest that marriage provides psychological benefits for individuals. However, it is less known if the beneficial effects of marriage on psychological wellbeing vary by motherhood status prior to marriage. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 79 Cohort, we estimate the effects of marriage moderated by motherhood status on subsequent levels of psychological well-being among a sample of the initially never married women. Our results indicate that entering a first marriage is associated with greater improvements in psychological well-being for single mothers compared to childless women. The results are somewhat inconsistent with previous …

Today's Media Influences Are Associated With Preteen's Opinions And Attitudes Of Body Image, Jessica Graziano Jan 2009

Today's Media Influences Are Associated With Preteen's Opinions And Attitudes Of Body Image, Jessica Graziano

Honors Capstones

Today's media & societal opinions transform the way a 2009 preteen, 7-16 years of age, views his or her own body image. My goal was to find out precisely how drastically effected are the students at Huntley Middle School in DeKalb, Illinois. I conducted a self-administered questionnaire to two life skills classes of 18-22 students total. I questioned the students about their personal selections on magazines, television shows, celebrity idols, and their opinions on eating habits, physical activity, and body image. I found that these students at middle school are beginning to be affected by the subliminal messages. They are …

Couture Copyright: Copyright Protection Fitting For Fashion Design, 9 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 602 (2009), Aleksandra Spevacek

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

The fashion industry does not need special, protective legislation. Laws are already in place that can serve to aid in the protection of fashion design. Legislation has extended copyright protection to architectural plans and their associated structures. This extension was based on rationale that is applicable, without revision, to fashion design. The practice of denying protection to fashion design is unsupported by law. In fact, courts already have the means to grant protection to fashion design. First, the court can grant protection through analogy to architectural works. Second, the court can clarify the separability test for utilitarian designs—a test which …

Nt 520 New Testament Introduction, Fredrick J. Long

Syllabi

1. A Bible with Old and New Testaments (NASB95, ESV, NRSV, or RSV recommended; but NIV is acceptable). Electronic Bible versions in Logos Bible Software are available for purchase individually (see link below), or come bundled with various packages. The advantage of having a Logos electronic version is to be able to access Scripture texts from the class readings via the "linking" capability within Logos Bible Software. The RSV in Logos is least expensive ($9.95) and is used in Asbury's IBS classes; but in Logos it contains no marginal notes; the NASB95 ($24.95) has linking to marginal notes. 2. David …

Symposium: The Civil Rights Roots Of Tinker's Disruption Tests, Kristi L. Bowman Jan 2009

Symposium: The Civil Rights Roots Of Tinker's Disruption Tests, Kristi L. Bowman

American University Law Review

This past spring marked the fortieth anniversary of Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, the landmark student speech case in which the Supreme Court held that three students were protected by the First Amendment when they wore black armbands in their Des Moines, Iowa public schools to protest the Vietnam War. Looking at Supreme Court precedent alone, it would seem as though the Tinker tests were created out of whole cloth: the substantial or material disruption, reasonable anticipation of such disruption, and rights of others tests did not have much of a basis in earlier Supreme Court decisions. …

Fighting Conflict: Violent Splits Or Healthy Divides?, Katerina Bezrukova, Chester Spell

Psychology

In this study, we develop a theory to understand how groups with strong divisions may, paradoxically, help members to cope with conflict and injustice. We test our theoretical predictions using a survey methodology and the data from 72 work groups across different industries. Consistent with our hypotheses, we found that group faultlines weakened the positive relationships between injustice and psychological health.

Las Vegas: The Perils Of Deception Fueled Growth, William J. Smith, Ahmad Safi Jan 2009

Las Vegas: The Perils Of Deception Fueled Growth, William J. Smith, Ahmad Safi

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

There are two types of deception – the deception of others and self-deception. Las Vegas thrives on both. Many would be aware of the importance of the first type of deception for the health of the Las Vegas economy, as they would for Macau, Monte Carlo, etc. Without the symbol of wealth to achieve elite global tourism status, and the ‘moth to the flame’ illusion of the likelihood of visitors to get ‘lucky’ and win great wealth, there would be no Las Vegas as it is known today. There is no other major reason to come to the city. There …

The Great Condom Adventure: Analyzing College Students’ Narratives Of Buying Condoms, Leslie H. Picca, Kristin E. Joos Jan 2009

The Great Condom Adventure: Analyzing College Students’ Narratives Of Buying Condoms, Leslie H. Picca, Kristin E. Joos

Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications

This project analyzes college students’ narratives buying condoms. Research suggests young persons do not consistently use condoms, and this study will provide an in-depth analysis to students affect toward condoms. We analyzed narratives written by 115 undergraduate students of their condom buying experiences. The vast majority of the students’ narratives about their condom buying experience fit a common framework, with elements including: preplanning, walking in the store, looking inconspicuous while wandering, finding the “hidden” condom location, making their selection, carrying and hiding the condoms, selecting a cashier and rushing through checkout, anticipating ridicule, and walking out of the store. Research …

To The Instruction Cave, Librarian!: Graphic Novels And Information Literacy, Steven Hoover

Library Faculty Research

Information literacy librarians have been known to troll the waters of popular culture for phenomena that are capable of teaching information literacy skills and simultaneously engaging student interest. For these librarians, graphic novels have reached a point where they are too big to ignore.

Treasure In Jars Of Clay: Towards A New Pauline Pastoral Theology Of Mission To Generation Y In Australia, Matthew Brain Jan 2009

Treasure In Jars Of Clay: Towards A New Pauline Pastoral Theology Of Mission To Generation Y In Australia, Matthew Brain

Theses

Within the contemporary Australian context, it is evident that the young people who represent Generation Y (born, 1981 – 1995) are not engaged by a Christian faith. This thesis will set out an approach that will seek to re-envisage the transmission of a Christian faith to the members of Generation Y in Australia through a Pauline pastoral theology of mission. Hence, this thesis aims:

1. To provide a theological hermeneutic of pastoral mission that may be a partner in dialogue with other approaches to ministry among Generation Y.

2. To assist the Christian churches in their consideration of some of …

Testing The Fixed Effects Restrictions? A Monte Carlo Study Of Chamberlain's Minimum Chi-Squared Test, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte Jan 2009

Testing The Fixed Effects Restrictions? A Monte Carlo Study Of Chamberlain's Minimum Chi-Squared Test, Badi H. Baltagi, Georges Bresson, Alain Pirotte

Center for Policy Research

Chamberlain (1982) showed that the fixed effects (FE) specification imposes testable restrictions on the coefficients from regressions of all leads and lags of dependent variables on all leads and lags of independent variables. Angrist and Newey (1991) suggested computing this test statistic as the degrees of freedom times the R2 from a regression of within residuals on all leads and lags of the exogenous variables. Despite the simplicity of these tests, they are not commonly used in practice. Instead, a Hausman (1978) test is used based on a contrast of the fixed and random effects specifications. We advocate the use …

Testing For Sphericity In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model (Revised July 2009), Badi H. Baltagi, Qu Feng, Chihwa Kao Jan 2009

Testing For Sphericity In A Fixed Effects Panel Data Model (Revised July 2009), Badi H. Baltagi, Qu Feng, Chihwa Kao

Center for Policy Research

This paper proposes a test for sphericity in a fixed effects panel data model. It uses the Random Matrix Theory based approach of Ledoit and Wolf (2002) to test for sphericity of the error terms in a fixed effects panel model with a large number of cross-sectional units and time series observations. Since the errors are unobservable, the residuals from the fixed effects regression are used. The limiting distribution of the proposed test statistic is derived. Additionally, its finite sample properties are examined using Monte Carlo simulations.

A Multi-State Evaluation Of The Factors Predicting Educational Achievement Of Adult Foster Care Alumni, Markell Harrison-Jackson Jan 2009

A Multi-State Evaluation Of The Factors Predicting Educational Achievement Of Adult Foster Care Alumni, Markell Harrison-Jackson

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Child maltreatment, a major public-health concern in the United States, has the most detrimental impact on adult emotional and physical development. According to the urban Institute, in the past decade foster-care expenditures for child maltreatment totaled $14.4 billion. Each year, 30,000 alumni "age out" of foster care. These are alumni who exit the foster-care system only because they reach the age of 18, not because they are reunited with their families, are adopted, or leave to attend college. Prior longitudinal research has shown that the nearly 80% of the alumni who are emancipated at the age of 18 failed to …

Synergy For Science Learning: An Interdisciplinary Partnership To Improve The Quality Of Science, Technology, Engineering And Mathematics Education, Alan Zollman, Kathleen Kitts, Mansour Tahernezhadi, Penny Billman

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Synergy is the interaction of two or more elements to produce a combined impact greater than the sum of their separate effects. In this paper, synergy for science learning came from the amalgamation of separate, independent science education contributors. Synergy for science learning thus was created by three resulting elements: content and applications, designed by the College of Engineering and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; research-based pedagogy, developed by the Colleges of Education and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and dynamic classroom implementation, guided by action research and delivered by the partnership school districts.

From Traditional Accountability To Shared Responsibility: The Benefits And Challenges Of Student Consultants Gathering Midcourse Feedback In College Classrooms, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2009

From Traditional Accountability To Shared Responsibility: The Benefits And Challenges Of Student Consultants Gathering Midcourse Feedback In College Classrooms, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

The explicit purpose of gathering feedback in college classes is to improve those courses, usually along the lines of structure, organisation, pace, or some other aspect of the course over which the professor typically has control. A potential outcome that is less immediately obvious is the shift that can take place regarding who is responsible and in what ways for the analysis and revision of pedagogical practices at the college level. In this article, I take as a foundation for my discussion the premises of new wave student voice work, and I describe a project through which students were positioned …

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins Jan 2009

“He Would Kill Me With His Penis”: Genocidal Rape In Rwanda As A State Crime, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Only recently have critical criminologists begun a systematic exploration of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity as state crimes (Kramer and Michalowski 2005; Mullins and Rothe 2008; Haveman and Smeulers 2008). This paper contributes to that growing literature through examining the nature and dynamics of sexual violence as it occurred during the 1994 Rwandan genocide. It draws upon empirical examination of events depicted in transcripts of trials held before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It qualitatively examines the role of leaders in producing mass sexual assaults. It explores how sexual mutilations were more intense expressions of what the …

Toward A Criminology Of International Criminal Law: An Integrated Theory Of International Criminal Violations, Dawn L. Rothe, Christopher W. Mullins

Articles

Violations of international criminal law (i.e., genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes) are a common occurrence around the globe. One need only to read international news, visit intra‐governmental (e.g., United Nations or the International Committee Red Cross), or nongovernmental organizations (e.g., Human Rights Watch or Amnesty International) to be exposed to the vast numbers of crimes of states, paramilitaries, and/or militias. Nonetheless, there has been relatively little attention paid to these types of offenses by criminologists. While there have been developments in creating typologies (Smeulers, 2008) and predictive models for genocide (Harf, 2005), due to the complexities and various …
