Empathy Conditioned Conservation: "Walking-In-The-Shoes-Of-Others" As A Conservation Farmer, Robert Sheeder, Gary D. Lynne

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Since the destruction and despair caused by the dust bowl of the 1930’s, Americans and their government have taken a keen interest in natural resource conservation policy on agricultural land throughout the country. As a reflection of this, the farm bill of 1936 entitled the “Soil Conservation and Domestic Allotment Act” included for the first time provisions that provided payments and support to farmers willing to employ soil conservation measures on their farms (Cain and Lovejoy, 2004). While the main purpose of this bill was to provide financial support to impoverished farmers dealing with low commodity prices, the fact remains …

The Influences Of The West On The 1993 Russian Constitution, Victoria Schwartz Jan 2009

The Influences Of The West On The 1993 Russian Constitution, Victoria Schwartz

UC Law SF International Law Review

This article explores the influences of the West on the text of the 1993 Russian Constitution. Although previous scholarship has identified Western influences on the Russian Constitution, these works do not trace how or why the particular transplant occurred. This article has a descriptive and analytical, but not normative goal of filling that gap by explaining the transplants that occurred, and why and how they were made. Among its conclusions, the article finds that the choices made by the framers of the 1993 Russian Constitution can often be explained by the contemporaneous political situation within Russia. Part of the uniqueness …

Chicks With Picks: An Ethnography Of Female Rock Instrumentalists In Tampa, Fl, Adele Fournet Jan 2009

Chicks With Picks: An Ethnography Of Female Rock Instrumentalists In Tampa, Fl, Adele Fournet

Theses & ETDs

This ethnography of female rock instrumentalists playing in bands in the Tampa, FL area explores the social significance of why there are so few female instrumentalists in this scenefive percent of the total number of rock musicians. Drawing on the ethnographic strategies of interview and participant observation and the theoretical insight of Pierre Bourdieu, this research more specifically seeks answers to the following questions: First, why are there so few women playing instruments in bands in this area? Second, how do some women get involved in this scene as instrumentalists despite the statistical odds against them? Finally, what are the …

City, Sweet City: A Study Of The Implementation Of New Urbanism And The Public Process, David A. Banks Jan 2009

City, Sweet City: A Study Of The Implementation Of New Urbanism And The Public Process, David A. Banks

Theses & ETDs

In October of 2007 the city government of Sarasota, Florida embarked on a planning effort called the "Bayfront Connectivity Charrette." Employing New Urbanist design principles, the city employed a contractor to hold an intense four-day design studio. In those four days, hundreds of residents interacted with public officials, professionals, and other residents to come up with a plan for a more pedestrianfriendly US-41 corridor. Through direct observation, document analysis, and follow-up interviews, this thesis tracks the public decision-making process in downtown Sarasota, Florida and asks the general question, "What are the perceptions of individuals' roles in the process; and how …

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril Jan 2009

Two Notions Of Privacy Online, Avner Levin, Patricia S. Abril

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Users of social networking websites tend to disclose much personal information online yet seem to retain some form of an expectation of privacy. Is this expectation of privacy always unreasonable? How do users of online social networks define their expectations of privacy online?

These questions were the impetus behind an empirical study, the findings of which are presented in this Article. The project, simultaneously conducted in Canada, at Ryerson University, and in the United States, at the University of Miami, consisted of a survey regarding personal information protection and expectations of privacy on online social networks (OSNs). Approximately 2,500 young …

Diversity In The Context Of Multicultural Australia: Implications For Nursing Practice, Akram Omeri, Lynette Raymond

Nursing Book Chapters

Cultural and social structures, such as race, religion, language, education, ethnicity, and economic status are major influences on peoples health and wellbeing. The Australian people represent a wealth of cultural diversity. The term culture in this chapter is used in the broad sense to mean the cultural and social structural dimensions or institutions in the environment that influence the development of an individuals beliefs, values and behaviour patterns.

In addition to the Indigenous population, Australia’s cultural diversity has increased through immigration. Australia has one of the largest proportions of immigrant populations in the world, with an estimated 24% of the …

Clinical Placement Experiences In The Highlands Of Vietnam, Heather Gluyas, Annette Fraser

Nursing Conference Papers

There is a considerable body of literature which supports the value of international placements, however there is little reported in the literature where these experiences have been in remote third world countries. This presentation will present the experiences of the students and their clinical supervisors who traveled to the remote Highlands of Vietnam to provide health assessment clinics and health education in schools.

The objectives were to provide the opportunity for students to develop professionally and personally through:

• Experiencing a clinical placement within a health care system other than the Australian system

• Working within a health care system …

"Your Cell Will Teach You Everything": Old Wisdom, Modern Science, And The Art Of Attention, Noreen L. Herzfeld

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Here is a brief excerpt of the content:

A brother came to Scetis to visit Abba Moses and asked him "Father, give me a word." The old man said to him "Go, sit in your cell, and your cell will teach you everything." 1 Among the Desert Fathers, Christian monks of the fourth and fifth centuries, it was customary for a novice to go to an elder and ask for "a word," a word of advice, of counsel, a word to take home and reflect on. What does this word of advice say to us today?

A Multitasking World

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem Jan 2009

Disaster Mental Health, Denise Bulling, Tarik Abdel-Monem

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

People have always given aid and comfort to each other during times of disaster. However, attempts to structure and professionalize this assistance are fairly recent developments. Disaster mental health, as an evolving field of practice and study, is a collection of interventions and practices that are designed to address incident-specific stress reactions, rather than ongoing or developmental mental health needs. Traditional mental health practice is based on a medical model, with a clinician seeing a patient in an office setting. Disaster mental health introduces a paradigm shift, requiring that practitioners (clinicians and indigenous helpers) work with individuals and whole communities …

Is Work The Only Thing That Pays? The Guaranteed Income And Other Alternative Anti-Poverty Policies In Historical Perspective, Felicia Kornbluh Jan 2009

Is Work The Only Thing That Pays? The Guaranteed Income And Other Alternative Anti-Poverty Policies In Historical Perspective, Felicia Kornbluh

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This paper examines the historical alternatives to welfare reform, namely the guaranteed income. This is, in a sense, the simplest possible approach to poverty, in that it proposes that each adult citizen receive a basic adequate income from a combination of market and state resources; if someone is not earning a wage, then she or he receives substantial support from the government and, in the case of a low wage, receives a smaller supplemental grant. The paper explores the meaning and history of the idea of a minimum income for all U.S. Citizens and argues that it was an object …

The Management Development Legacy Of Robert Greenleaf, Jeff Mccollum, Joel Moses Jan 2009

The Management Development Legacy Of Robert Greenleaf, Jeff Mccollum, Joel Moses

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert Greenleaf's writings have inspired considerable thought and have been well documented. Robert Greenleaf's name will forever, and appropriately so, be linked with "servant-leadership"-something he wrote extensively about in his second career as author and consultant. Greenleaf's first career, the 38 years he spent with AT&T, left a legacy of rich innovation. At that time, the official name of the company was American Telephone and Telegraph. We will use AT & T, the contemporary identification, throughout this article. In Greenleaf's work there, we can find the antecedents to contemporary development endeavors such as coaching, "action learning," and assessment centers. Although …

Constructing Rural Geographies In Publication, Verdie Craig, Matthew Kurtz Jan 2009

Constructing Rural Geographies In Publication, Verdie Craig, Matthew Kurtz

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The paper compares American and British scholarship in rural geography. It argues that, among other reasons for the difference in “rural geography” between the two countries, their distinct publication strategies offer insights for potential interventions. To sketch how the field has been differently construed on opposite sides of the Atlantic, the article first examines several sub-disciplinary literature reviews. It then adds a materialist account to a performative perspective of subdisciplinary formation by exploring how the publication industry helped shape distinct relationships between rural geography and theory. We suggest that rural geographers in the US might use new publication strategies to …

Storm Warnings: The Obvious And Latent Disorder Approaching From Changes In The Environment, Addiction, And Family Structure, Charles W. Kinman Jan 2009

Storm Warnings: The Obvious And Latent Disorder Approaching From Changes In The Environment, Addiction, And Family Structure, Charles W. Kinman

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does. And when the south wind blows you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is." Luke 12:54-55 As the crowd looks to the expanding global horizon, they see complex social change approaching like brewing storms. These storms threaten to introduce powerful winds of disconnection, disorder, and chaos that will generate great challenges for leaders in the next decade. The first storm is the environment's irreparable changes in nature and population. The second storm is society's …

Sunday Friends is a non-profit organization in San José, California, that provides multiple activities for families who are in need of financial support. Given the particular location of the program, most families are Latino and bilingual. Participants and program volunteers form a community at an elementary school on a couple of scheduled Sundays each month. When family members participate in activities designed to educate, improve skills, and to give back to the larger community, they earn tickets that they can redeem for items that they need and want from the Sunday Friends store. Activities include healthy cooking projects, “Thank You …
