Toward An I Ching Model Of Communication, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

Toward An I Ching Model Of Communication, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The paper aims to develop a model of communication based on the thought of I Ching. The dialectical and dialogical interaction between yin and yang serves as the foundation of the model development, which leads to the conceptualization of communication as an interdetermining process in which interactants develop a mutually dependent relationship through the exchange of symbols. The model stipulates five characteristics of human communication: holistic, hierarchical, interconnected, creative, and harmonious. In addition, the holistic and dynamic nature of communication is delineated based on the model from three perspectives: forces of human communication, forms of the movement of human …

Beyond The Dichotomy Of Communication Studies, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

Beyond The Dichotomy Of Communication Studies, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

The trend of globalization has sharpened the debate on the culture-specific and culture-general approaches to communication studies. As the demand for culture-specific approaches in scholarly research is increasing due to the impact of globalization, the trend of universalizing representations based on a culture-general paradigm is also getting stronger. Unfortunately, the countermovement between scholars’ dichotomous positions continues to reflect the limitation and myopia of traditional views, which mirror a full embracing of the local practices on the one side and a blind acceptance of foreign elements on the other. Hence, how to balance the yin and yang of scholarly research will …

Competence Theories, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2009

Competence Theories, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

This entry explores theories of communication competence from psychological, social, and critical perspectives respectively. Although each perspective shows incompatible differences on their orientation to studying communication competence, it is necessary to examine the common themes that cut across these differences, because to reach communication competence is an important educational objective. These common themes, based on the criteria of effectiveness and appropriateness and served as valid empirical indicators, dictate that communication competence should be comprised of three dimensions of cognitive, affective, and behavioral abilities.

Immigration Controversies In Nebraska: Policies, Politics, And Public Perspectives, Alan J. Tomkins, Tarik Abdel-Monem, Angel Rivera-Colon

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

Immigration reform has been a part of the United States policy discussions since the 18th century. As early as 1790, Congress was developing laws to allow immigrants to become United States citizens. By 1891, due to the amount of immigrants flowing into the country, the federal government assumed responsibility for immigration control and the Immigration Service was established. Over the past century, policies regulating immigration have transformed reflecting public concern over changing migrant flows into the country. During World War I, immigration levels were relatively low, but when the mass flow resumed post World War I, Congress enacted the …

Analysis Of Factors Influencing West Virginia Secondary Biology And Science Teacher Attrition Rates, Seth Perry Jan 2009

Analysis Of Factors Influencing West Virginia Secondary Biology And Science Teacher Attrition Rates, Seth Perry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The high rate of attrition for beginning teachers has been blamed on many factors. Nationally these include low pay, urban versus rural school settings, age, with younger teachers leaving sooner, and other variables making a complex problem with no clear component responsible for the loss of teachers. This study examined the self reported variables that contribute to high school teachers in West Virginia leaving their profession. An electronic survey instrument was distributed to current secondary teachers across the state. Teachers were asked to respond to questions related to professional satisfaction, perceived value from students and parents, administrative support, content versus …

Catholic Schools And Student Academic Performance;Does The Urban Catholic School Experience Mitigate Ethnoracial Disparity?, Lanny K. (Lanny Keith) Hollis

ETD Archive

This study examined an inner-city Catholic high school to ascertain the possible existence of an achievement gap. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses examined academic indicators (GPA and Math and Science OGT results) and demographic and school variables. Students (258 Black, 101 White, and 55 Hispanic) completed questionnaires, which were matched with school data and confirmatory alumni focus groups. Analyses revealed no significant differences (ANOVA) among academic indicator means. Correlations were found between academic indicators and length of Catholic education, good behavior, extracurricular participation, high-school-graduation-oriented peers, and teacher caring scores. Regression models found positive student behavior, peers, female gender, extracurricular …

Explaining Math Achievement;Personality, Motivation, And Trust, Ebru Kilic-Bebek

ETD Archive

This study investigated the statistical significance of student trust next to the well-tested constructs of personality and motivation to determine whether trust is a significant predictor of course achievement in college math courses. Participants were 175 students who were taking undergraduate math courses in an urban public university. The Mini-Markers (Saucier, 1994), an adapted Student Trust Survey (Barnes, Adams & Forsyth, 2004, April), and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (Pintrich, Smith, Garcia & McKeachie, 1991) were used to measure students' Big-Five personality factors, trust in their math instructor, and motivational beliefs and strategies for their learning and performance in …

Residential Foreclosures' Impact On Nearby Single-Family Residential Properties;A New Approach To The Spatial And Temporal Dimensions, Timothy F. Kobie Jan 2009

Residential Foreclosures' Impact On Nearby Single-Family Residential Properties;A New Approach To The Spatial And Temporal Dimensions, Timothy F. Kobie

ETD Archive

This dissertation analyzes the impact that foreclosures have on neighboring property values. It focuses on foreclosures' impact based upon face blocks, not straight-line distances and it also incorporates time and the use of spatial statistics. Findings from this study show that properties in the foreclosure process longer have a greater negative impact on nearby property values than properties with more recent foreclosure filings. The first negative impact is not seen until a year after the filing. Therefore, policy responses need to be as swift as possible in preventing any negative impact on neighboring property values and should not focus on …

Student Nurses' Perception Of Death And Dying, Joan E. Niederriter Jan 2009

Student Nurses' Perception Of Death And Dying, Joan E. Niederriter

ETD Archive

Student nurses are involved in caring for patients who are actively dying or who have been told they have a terminal illness and are faced with the process of dying. Students encounter these patients in hospitals, nursing homes, at home or in hospice care settings. According to Robinson (2004), "nurses are the healthcare providers that are most often with individuals at the end of their lives" (p. 89). Nurses should be knowledgeable about end-of-life care. Studies show that only 0.41 of nurses are certified in palliative care (Means to a better end, 2004). Nursing students often have a difficult time …

The Role Of Emotional Relational Behaviors On Interpersonal Consumer Service Loyalty, Bernadette P. Njoku Jan 2009

The Role Of Emotional Relational Behaviors On Interpersonal Consumer Service Loyalty, Bernadette P. Njoku

ETD Archive

This study seeks to examine factors that enhance the development of interpersonal service relationships between consumers and service employees. It focuses on interpersonal service relationships that are extended in duration, affective or emotionally charged, and intimate in distance (EAI), or those which appear to be boundary open (Price and Arnould 1999 Price et al. 1995a, 1995b). It thus emphasizes relationships that are similar to personal acquaintances and friendships, rather than ones that are non-affective, and consist of little or no emotional content, such as professional relationships and casual acquaintances (Johnson and Selnes 2004 Coulter and Ligas 2004). Based on a …

An Empirical Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Consumer Value For An Experiential Offering In Marketing, Glenna Carolyn Mack Pendleton Jan 2009

An Empirical Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Consumer Value For An Experiential Offering In Marketing, Glenna Carolyn Mack Pendleton

ETD Archive

An experiential offering is as an activity, product, or service that provides valuable subjective experiences during consumption. Marketers can capitalize on this consumer value if they know which dimensions are most important to consumers. Based on a review of the literature, this study developed a framework that represents three major components of customer value in an experiential offering: social value, utilitarian value, and emotional or hedonic value. After, analyzing the data from 373 respondents, the results of this study showed that social identification with peers, utilitarian attitude toward the consumption process itself, and hedonic experiences during consumption were all dimensions …

Treatment Barriers And Stages Of Change Among Adolescents In Psychotherapy, Heidi Mae Sliter Jan 2009

Treatment Barriers And Stages Of Change Among Adolescents In Psychotherapy, Heidi Mae Sliter

ETD Archive

One in five children and adolescents meet the criteria for psychiatric disorders each year. Of those who meet the criteria and are referred for treatment, forty to sixty percent will terminate prematurely (Nock and Kazdin, 2001). While some researchers studying this phenomenon have focused on how a client progresses through treatment and others look at dropout risk factors, no one has explored the relationship between the two. The specific purpose of this study is to provide information to the existing pool of research focusing on treatment effectiveness and completion to help provide better services to the mentally ill adolescent population …

Chanus Return: The Reclamation Of Bengali Identity, Mamta Roy Jan 2009

Chanus Return: The Reclamation Of Bengali Identity, Mamta Roy

ETD Archive

Immigrant identity and acculturation has been a topic of significant debate in the twentieth century. Coming to the host nation, and getting integrated into the mainstream culture is a process which holds different meanings for different immigrants. On the one hand they leave the security of the homeland for an insecure future, on the other hand, the non-acceptance and discrimination of the host nation makes their integration a difficult process. Above all, they too want to live in the comfort zone of their homeland identity thus making integration impossibility. Going home syndrome and a deep rooted love for the motherland …

Identity Distress Surrounding Retirement, Jennifer Colbert Jan 2009

Identity Distress Surrounding Retirement, Jennifer Colbert

ETD Archive

The purpose of this study was to examine identity distress surrounding retirement. From past literature I hypothesized that individuals would experience more psychological distress after retirement compared to before and those who earned a professional degree would experience more distress than others. I also hypothesized the longer time retired the less distress, and those who were forced to retire would experience more distress after retirement than those who retired voluntarily. Results of the study conducted with 40 retired people in the United States revealed only one significant result. Those who were forced to retire showed increased levels of identity distress …

Genre And Gender In Charles Bukowski's Notes Of A Dirty Old Man, Kallisto J. Vimr Jan 2009

Genre And Gender In Charles Bukowski's Notes Of A Dirty Old Man, Kallisto J. Vimr

ETD Archive

Charles Bukowski's notes of a dirty old man is a genre-blurring, gender-blending "start" to the perpetual "work-in-progress" that constitutes his oeuvre. Bukowski's genre heterogeneity provides a literal shape-shifting that allows the Bukowski-character to experiment with his a fluid, indeterminate subjectivity, helping unravel the tight myth that binds him as a "dirty old man." Examining one of the vignettes in the book, the column recounting Bukowski meeting Neal Cassady, showcases Bukowski's engagement with autobiography and creative nonfiction in order to respond to constructions of verisimilitude this is inextricably linked to other organized constructions Bukowski must work in--or out from--namely the hierarchy …

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor Jan 2009

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor

ETD Archive

Participatory learning or "Participatory Education" as a formal declaration of either ideology or praxis has yet to be written and I would certainly not attempt to write one in the current educational capacity I now find myself in however I have found myself in the unique position of actually being first to something and so have decided to enjoin the relatively scant sketches of, as far as the great blade of written history is concerned, cutting edge economic philosophy with the over-personal, absolutely singular experience of a student-teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. The principles of Participatory Education are adapted from the …

Border Crossings: Transnational Americanist Anthopology, Kathleen S. Fine-Dare, Steven L. Rubenstein

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

For anthropologists and social scientists working in North and South America, the past few decades have brought considerable change as issues such as repatriation, cultural jurisdiction, and revitalization movements have swept across the hemisphere. Today scholars are rethinking both how and why they study culture as they gain a new appreciation for the impact they have on the people they study. Key to this reassessment of the social sciences is a rethinking of the concept of borders: not only between cultures and nations but between disciplines such as archaeology and cultural anthropology, between past and present, and between anthropologists and …

Bourdieu In Algeria: Colonial Politics, Ethnographic Practices, Theoretical Developments, Jane E. Goodman, Paul A. Silverstein Jan 2009

Bourdieu In Algeria: Colonial Politics, Ethnographic Practices, Theoretical Developments, Jane E. Goodman, Paul A. Silverstein

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The shadow cast by Pierre Bourdieu’s theory is large and well documented, but his early ethnographic work in Algeria is less well known and often overlooked. This volume, the first critical examination of Bourdieu’s early fieldwork and its impact on his larger body of social theory, represents an original and much-needed contribution to the field. Its six essays reappraise Bourdieu’s original research in light of contemporary processes and make substantial contributions to the ethnography of North Africa. The contributors are scholars of North Africa and France, and each is actively engaged with Bourdieu’s work. Bourdieu in Algeria offers a unique …
