Critical And Discursive Teaching In Psychology, Debra A. Harkins, Yvonne Wells Jan 2009

Critical And Discursive Teaching In Psychology, Debra A. Harkins, Yvonne Wells

Pedagogy and the Human Sciences

American youth are more adept at multi-tasking and multi-processing the fast-paced media and technology information than prior generations (Glasl, 1999; Prensky, 2001). During this new wave of “post-modernism,” youth can interact globally with a far more culturally diverse yet interdependent society. Questioning, risk-taking, conflict resolution, and continuous innovation are the systems-level skills required to live and prosper. These skills should be integrated with more “modernist” skills, such as learning the truths of one’s field as the teachers of that field present them. This paper presents an example of how teaching about conflict can be used to help students critically examine …

The Article also provides an overview of federal legislation addressing anti-gay hate crime. In Part III, it examines the policy environment within which anti-gay hate crime laws have been, and continue to be, considered. Specifically, the jurisprudential frameworks that shape, define, and constrain discourses of equality, rights, and social identity are analyzed. One School, Many Differences: An Assessment Tool For School Counselors And Multicultural Counseling, Rebecca L. Tadlock-Marlo Jan 2009

One School, Many Differences: An Assessment Tool For School Counselors And Multicultural Counseling, Rebecca L. Tadlock-Marlo

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Multicultural counseling competencies (MCCs) have typically been measured with instruments designed for and normed on mental health professionals (for example, MCCTS-R; Holcomb-McCoy, 2001; MCI; Sodowsky, Taffe, Gutkin, & Wise, 1994; D’Andrea, Daniels, & Heck, 1991). One published instrument specifically assesses school counselor MCCs (MCCTS-R; Holcomb-McCoy, 2001) but it does not conform to ASCA standards (2010, E.2). Following a set of validation procedures, an instrument designed to specifically assess school counselors’ multicultural counseling competencies was created that conforms to American School Counselor Association and Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development standards. Its creation is detailed here and the resulting instrument is …

Bordering Capabilities Versus Borders: Implications For National Borders, Saskia Sassen Jan 2009

Bordering Capabilities Versus Borders: Implications For National Borders, Saskia Sassen

Michigan Journal of International Law

A core argument of this Essay is that the capability to make borderings has itself switched organizing logics: from institutionalizing the perimeter of a territory to multiplying transversal borderings cutting across that perimeter. This switch is partly linked to the types of scalar shifts in the operational space of a growing number of systems. To the more economic systems already mentioned above, let me add such diverse instances as the policing of the illegal drug trade, the war on terror, the judicial and political struggle to protect human rights, and the environmental effort to reorganize transnational economic sectors, including the …

Battered Women, Children And The End Of Abusive Relationships, Angela M. Moe Jan 2009

Battered Women, Children And The End Of Abusive Relationships, Angela M. Moe

Sociology Faculty Publications

Much work has focused on the interpersonal dynamics of violent relationships, but less is known about the specific turning points that prompt women at least to try to end them. Using a feminist standpoint method and phenomenological-based analysis of in-depth interviews with mothers in a domestic violence shelter, this article focuses on the role of children in women’s decisions to leave abusive partners. It discusses arriving at the decision, the logistics involved in leaving and planning for the future, and it presents policy and advocacy-based recommendations that are aimed at addressing the social welfare of women and children.

"‘A Philosophical Shock’: Foucault’S Reading Of Heidegger And Nietzsche." In: C. G. Prado, Ed., Foucault’S Legacy (London: Continuum, 2009), Pp. 19-41., Babette Babich Jan 2009

"‘A Philosophical Shock’: Foucault’S Reading Of Heidegger And Nietzsche." In: C. G. Prado, Ed., Foucault’S Legacy (London: Continuum, 2009), Pp. 19-41., Babette Babich

Articles and Chapters in Academic Book Collections

Although there is no lack of efforts to read Foucault and Nietzsche together or indeed to align Foucault and Heidegger, Foucault scholarship overall tends to be split on these same terms. The author argues that the opposition is misleading for the complicated reason that Foucault’s Heidegger can only be understood on Nietzschean terms while and at the same time, Foucault’s Nietzsche only takes place by way of Heidegger albeit (and this point simply cannot be overemphasized) a very Frencophone reading of Heidegger.

The Effects Of Negative Childhood Experiences On The Severity Of Mental And Substance Abuse Disorders And Recidivism, Christie Lynn Gabriel Jan 2009

The Effects Of Negative Childhood Experiences On The Severity Of Mental And Substance Abuse Disorders And Recidivism, Christie Lynn Gabriel

Theses Digitization Project

Overcrowded prisons are a growing problem in the United States. Currently, California prisons are over capacity 85%. Substance abuse increases the likelihood of criminality, for half of state prisoners admitted to being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of their offense(s). A large portion of these individuals, once incarcerated, is also diagnosed with a mental illness. By researching dually diagnosed inmates who were participating in a 90-day in-custody treatment program, this study focuses on how negative family and school experiences become major contributors to adult mental and substance abuse disorders and criminality.

Content Anlaysis Of Computer Conferencing Transcripts, Roisin Donnelly, John Gardner

Journal Articles

Within the field of higher education, there are situations where the learner is not well served in a classroom setting. Problematic issues such as scheduling, critical mass, time, pace and location have the potential to be counterbalanced by e-learning. Within this, the asynchronous nature of today’s online learning environments and computer conferencing tools have popularly been claimed to offer tremendous benefits for learners who are willing to take responsibility for their own learning, to progress at their own pace, and interact with their online teacher to get immediate feedback on their learning and progress. Indeed, increasingly, educators today are very …

Addams And Dewey: Pragmatism, Expression, And Community, Marilyn Fischer

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Chicago in the 1890s was home to two remarkable institutions, started by two remarkable activist-philosophers, experimenting with ideas and with social change. The first was Hull House, a social settlement, founded by Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr in 1889. The second was the Laboratory School, an experimental school opened in 1896 by John Dewey, along with teachers Katherine Camp Mayhew and Anna Camp Edwards. Interaction was constant between the residents of Hull House and the teachers of the Laboratory School, as the participants learned from and taught each other. Through Hull House and the Laboratory School, Addams and Dewey …

Occupational Health And Safety Status Of Indigenous And Latino Farmworkers In Oregon, Stephanie Farquhar, Nancy M. Goff, Nargess Shadbeh, Julie Samples, Santiago Ventura, Valentin Sanchez, Pamela Rao, Shelley Davis

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Exposure to pesticides poses great risk to agricultural workers and their families. Of the approximately 174,000 agricultural workers in Oregon, studies estimate that up to 40% of the workers in Oregon are indigenous and may be particularly vulnerable to the health risks of working in pesticide treated areas. Surveys conducted with Oregon farmworkers suggest that Latino and indigenous farmworkers differ demographically and may have diverse occupational and health needs. All Latino workers reported Spanish as their native language, while indigenous workers spoke several different native languages. Latino workers were employed mostly in orchards (28%) and nurseries (24%), while indigenous workers …

“Johnny Came To College To Get An Education – He Found Romance Anyway”: The Unconventional Wartime Story Of John And Marie Renza, Julien Dumont, Katie Gorham Jan 2009

“Johnny Came To College To Get An Education – He Found Romance Anyway”: The Unconventional Wartime Story Of John And Marie Renza, Julien Dumont, Katie Gorham

Selected Student Research from 2009

Among the long list of economic, social, and political changes that American society experienced during the World War II era was a trend toward whirlwind romances, courtships, and marriages. The pressures of war, namely the conscription of most able-bodied American men, placed many young couples in precarious positions as they faced a long-term separation, names a “courtship by mail,” or a hasty marriage. Marie Teigue and John Renza, both wartime graduates of Bryant College, bucked the trends of their age. The Renzas were a couple that fell in love, grew apart, grew up, and found each other again on their …

Inviting Trouble: The Subversive Potential Of The Outsider Within Standpoint, Jane Hindman Jan 2009

Inviting Trouble: The Subversive Potential Of The Outsider Within Standpoint, Jane Hindman

Publications and Research

Jane E. Hindman’s “Inviting Trouble” makes the case for the collection of disparate approaches to critical disruption by reinforcing critical reflection as a generative practice that challenges subordinating silence. Hindman asserts “inviting troublesome questions enhances a healthy system” (100). She argues that anger, as a part of the trouble provoked by critical introspection, has a useful function in the struggle against the silencing of colonial influence.

Nepalese Governmental Accounting Development In The 1950s And Early 1960s: An Attempt To Institutionalize Expenditure Accounting, Pawan Adhikari, Frode Mellemvik

Accounting Historians Journal

This paper aims at disseminating knowledge about the evolution of expenditure accounting in the government of Nepal. In doing so, the paper examines emerging ideas in the aftermath of the political change of 1951 in Nepal, and traces the processes of development and institutionalization of expenditure accounting during the course of two decades, the 1950s and early 1960s, with particular reference to the institutional forces at work. An interesting feature of Nepalese accounting reforms before and after the political change was the active participation of India, the United Nations, and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). At the outset …

The Best Brains Of The Public Accounting World: The Restricted Membership Of The Army Accountancy Advisory Panel, 1942-1945, Phillip E. Cobbin

Accounting Historians Journal

The events threatening to engulf Australia as the Japanese imperial forces continued their push through southeast Asia caused enormous concern for the Department of the Army as civilian and uniformed staff struggled to cope with large increases in manpower and expenditure responsibilities. The department moved, in January 1942, to create an expert panel of accountants to provide advice with a view to overcoming these problems. This paper focuses uniquely on a small group of individuals brought together for their expertise in accounting drawn exclusively from the practitioner ranks of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. The paper draws attention …
