Predictors Of Paternal Commitment And Paternal Involvement Among Low-Income African American Fathers, Deadric Treandis Williams May 2009

Predictors Of Paternal Commitment And Paternal Involvement Among Low-Income African American Fathers, Deadric Treandis Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Results indicate that structural factors are highly predictive of paternal commitment and paternal involvement among low-income African American fathers, thus lending strong credence to the structural barriers perspective. Moreover, while findings also indicate that several cultural factors are associated with paternal involvement (e.g., attitudes toward single motherhood and low self-efficacy), they are at odds with the cultural deficiency perspective. These results have both theoretical and policy implications. With respect to fatherhood theory, findings derived from this research call for a much-needed theoretical integration in studying paternal commitment and paternal involvement among low-income African American fathers; that is, to synthesize and …

The Attitudes And Perceived Self-Efficacy Of Mississippi Career And Technical Educators Toward Information And Communication Technology, Jason C. Crittenden

Theses and Dissertations

Research indicates that positive attitudes toward information and communication technology, coupled with a high perceived level of self-efficacy, greatly assist teachers as they strive to integrate technology into their curricula. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to investigate the attitudes and perceived levels of self-efficacy as they pertain to information and communication technology (ICT) of career and technical educators at high schools in Mississippi in an effort to better understand one part of the fabric that makes up the educational mosaic in Mississippi. Participants for this study included career and technical educators teaching in one of three disciplines: 1) …

Models That Predict Competitive Employment Outcomes In The United States Federal/State Vocational Rehabilitation Program For Clients Who Are Blind And Clients With Other Disabilities, Paula R. Warren-Peace May 2009

Models That Predict Competitive Employment Outcomes In The United States Federal/State Vocational Rehabilitation Program For Clients Who Are Blind And Clients With Other Disabilities, Paula R. Warren-Peace

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of clients in the Federal/State Vocational Rehabilitation program (VR) have been successful in achieving competitive employment in recent years. However, one disability group – clients who are legally blind – has traditionally lagged and currently lags behind in obtaining similar proportions of competitive employment outcomes as their counterparts in the VR system. In this study, the 2007 RSA 911 data were used to explore potential explanations for the discrepancy between outcomes for clients who are legally blind and clients with other disabilities. Similar to previous studies, frequency analyses confirmed that clients who are legally blind are far less …

Has The Education And Health Relationship Changed Over Time?A Panel Analysis Of Age, Period, And Cohort Effects, Wesley Lynn James May 2009

Has The Education And Health Relationship Changed Over Time?A Panel Analysis Of Age, Period, And Cohort Effects, Wesley Lynn James

Theses and Dissertations

Two vital American social institutions, education and health care, are intimately related. The individual-level relationship between education and health is tenuous, changing over time, throughout the life course, and across generations. Previous research in this area does not separate the mediating effects of age, period, and cohort or assess the unique effects of various levels of educational attainment on health. Using longitudinal data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, this dissertation untangles these factors to find that education has become a more important predictor of health now than twenty years ago, education benefits health across the life course, and …

A Cultural Perspective On The Impact Of Family And Society On The Competitive Advantage Of Organizations And Nations, Sami Abdallah Alwuhaibi May 2009

A Cultural Perspective On The Impact Of Family And Society On The Competitive Advantage Of Organizations And Nations, Sami Abdallah Alwuhaibi

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is interested in explaining how and why the culture of family and society impacts the competitive advantage of organizations and nations. Central to such an explanation is the development of a theory of the family firm because that theory is a potential link between the four distinct systems, the family, organization, nation, and society. This dissertation consists of four essays, three theoretical and one empirical. The first essay is theoretical; it argues that the formation of family and nonamily firms depends on the family culture of the firm’s founders. The essay distinguishes between two family cultures: one supports …

Investigating The Antecedents And Consequences Of Perceived Connectedness To Brand Users: Brand Communities Versus Brand Collectivities, William Carroll Martin May 2009

Investigating The Antecedents And Consequences Of Perceived Connectedness To Brand Users: Brand Communities Versus Brand Collectivities, William Carroll Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Brands can often be highly capable of linking individuals to one another. Many brand admirers feel a psychological connection with one another, a feeling referred to in this dissertation as perceived connectedness to brand users (PCBU). Though this connection has been almost wholly studied among brand consumer engaged in recurrent brand-oriented social interaction (i.e. brand communities), brand consumers need not be engaged in social interaction in order to feel an implicit connection with one another. In this dissertation, a collection of individuals who feel a connection with a brand’s consumers, while engaging in minimal to no recurrent brand-oriented social interaction, …

“Judaismo A Tu Manera”: What It Means To Be Jewish In 21st Century Buenos Aires, Gili Ben-Yosef May 2009

“Judaismo A Tu Manera”: What It Means To Be Jewish In 21st Century Buenos Aires, Gili Ben-Yosef

Sociology Honors Papers

In the summer of 2008 I set out to discover what it means to be Jewish in 21st century Buenos Aires. Through extensive field work, 22 formal interviews, visits to multiple Jewish organizations, and daily informal conversations, I gathered the information necessary to answer my question.

By focusing on three case studies of different Jewish institutions in Buenos Aires, this thesis aims to elucidate two points. First, that despite theories of sociologists such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim who believed the importance of religion would fade with the onset of modernity and rational thought, religion has not yet disappeared. My …

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts May 2009

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

Contemporary concerns of anthropology stress the role of power relations in framing the study of a marginalized people within society. In this study, the present predicament of the Ethiopian community in Israel is examined through the highly political processes of nationalism, ethnic conflict, and identity construction. Each of these factors hold implications for the ways by which a dominant European nationalist ideology in Israel has come to impose forces of authority upon subjugated, non-European ethnic groups. The Ethiopians are one such group. The point of divergence between the community of Ethiopian Jews and Israel’s national identity has caused the Ethiopian …

Giving Adult Learners A Voice After The Inquest: A Review Of A Mixed Method Approach To Educational Research, Ann Conway

Other resources

This paper highlights the necessary application of mixed methods in educational research within the field of adult learners and lifelong learning in higher education to provide adult learners with a “voice”. The paper will introduce the reader to educational research through focusing on mixed methods and the theoretical frameworks within. Critical hermeneutic epistemology or transformative research (as espoused by Freire and Habermas in critical realism cited in Morrow and Torres, (2002)), social constructivism within phenomenology (see Vygotsky’s (1934) and Bruner (1996) work cited in Carlile and Jordan, 2005: 21-22) and pragmatism within the critical realism school (The Chicago School of …

Cellular Phones Influence(S) And Impacts(S) On Social Interactions And Interpersonal Relationships, Alexia Corbett May 2009

Cellular Phones Influence(S) And Impacts(S) On Social Interactions And Interpersonal Relationships, Alexia Corbett

Perspectives

This paper seeks to explore how cellular phones (cell phones/mobiles) have influenced and impacted social interactions and interpersonal relationships. There have been a number of suggested theories and studies that have been contributed to the rising popularity and commonality of cell phones as to how they are affecting the way individuals are interacting in society. Some of these include, a change in the concept of time and space (Fortunati, 2002), lack of face-to-face interaction (Thompson and Cupples, 2008), the maintenance of relationships, social absences, and social dependency (Reid and Reid, 2004). In addition to these ideas, it has also been …

Does Violent Crime Cause Individuals To Join Gangs?, Colin Hottman May 2009

Does Violent Crime Cause Individuals To Join Gangs?, Colin Hottman

Economics Honors Projects

This paper examines the hypothesis that violent crime causes gang membership. I construct a theoretical model of the individual’s decision to join a gang based on the protection that gang membership provides from violent crime. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 cohort and a probit specification, I test three different measures of the threat of violent crime: a dummy variable for experiencing gun violence, a dummy variable for being the victim of repeated bullying, and a dummy variable for being the victim of a violent crime. In my regressions, I find support for the hypothesis that …

Down From The Mountain: Skill Upgrading And Wages In Appalachia, Christopher Bollinger, James P. Ziliak, Kenneth R. Troske May 2009

Down From The Mountain: Skill Upgrading And Wages In Appalachia, Christopher Bollinger, James P. Ziliak, Kenneth R. Troske

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Despite evidence that skilled labor is increasingly concentrated in cities, whether regional wage inequality is predominantly due to differences in skill levels or returns is unknown. We compare Appalachia, with its wide mix of urban and rural areas, to other parts of the U.S., and find that gaps in both skill levels and returns account for the lack of high wage male workers. For women, skill shortages are important across the distribution. Because rural wage gaps are insignificant, our results suggest that widening wage inequality between Appalachia and the rest of the U.S. owes to a shortage of skilled cities.

Intimate Strangers And Estranged Intimates: An Investigation Of The Impact Of Instant Messaging And Short Message Service On The Size And Strength Of Social Networks In Kuwait, Bashaiar Al-Sanaa

Dissertations

Information and communication technologies (ICT) have revolutionized how people experience spatial proximity, reality, and connectivity. These technologies provide inexpensive access to anything and anyone in the world. They also replicate face-to-face interaction in cyber-space and allow for participation in numerous modes of social exchange.

People use Information and communication technologies to write web logs (blogs), send electronic mail (email), socialize through networking sites (such as Facebook and MySpace), text each other through mobile phone Short Message Service (SMS) and chat via online instant messaging (IM).With all these applications, a debate has ignited that actual physical communication is decreasing in favor …
