Preliminary Investigation And Interview Guide Development For Studying How Malaysian Farmers Form Their Mental Models Of Farming, Steven Eric Krauss, Azimi Hamzah, Zoharah Omar, Turiman Suandi, Ismi Arif Ismail, Mohd Zaidan Zahari, Zanariah Mohd Nor Jun 2009

Preliminary Investigation And Interview Guide Development For Studying How Malaysian Farmers Form Their Mental Models Of Farming, Steven Eric Krauss, Azimi Hamzah, Zoharah Omar, Turiman Suandi, Ismi Arif Ismail, Mohd Zaidan Zahari, Zanariah Mohd Nor

The Qualitative Report

The development of the interview guide is an integral aspect of the process of conducting qualitative research, yet one that receives little attention in the qualitative research literature. It is often assumed that interview guides are merely a list of questions used to guide a qualitative interview. The background analysis and preparation necessary to prepare an appropriate and effective guide cannot be dismissed, however, as they are integral aspects of the interview process. The current study on mental models of Malaysian smallholder farmers employed in-depth interviews as its primary approach to data generation. This paper details the initial processes undertaken …

Social Justice, Pedagogy And Multiliteracies: Developing Communities Of Practice For Teacher Education, Wendy Cumming-Potvin Jun 2009

Social Justice, Pedagogy And Multiliteracies: Developing Communities Of Practice For Teacher Education, Wendy Cumming-Potvin

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Celebrating and responding equitably to diversity have become increasingly essential for teachers’ work in the new millennium, which is characterized by shifting local and global communities. Aiming to broaden conceptions of teacher education within a predominantly ‘back to basics’ literacy environment, this article draws on selected results from a qualitative study underpinned by the metaphor of communities of practice (Wenger, 1998; Wenger et al., 2002). Conducted in Western Australia, the project involved a small group of pre-service teachers using a pedagogy of ‘Multiliteracies’ (The New London Group, 2000) in face-to-face and on-line settings to construct understandings about literacy learning and …

Bidirectional Partner Violence Among Homeless Young Adults: Risk Factors And Outcomes, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa A. Melander, Harmonijoie Noel Jun 2009

Bidirectional Partner Violence Among Homeless Young Adults: Risk Factors And Outcomes, Kimberly A. Tyler, Lisa A. Melander, Harmonijoie Noel

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

One of the most prevalent forms of violence in contemporary society is the victimization of intimate partners. Although it has been established that homeless young people experience high levels of victimization on the street, little is known about partner violence (PV) experiences among this group, especially bidirectional violence. As such, the purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of PV and bidirectional violence and to investigate risk factors and outcomes of this form of violence using a sample of homeless young adults. Overall, 59% of the sample experienced bidirectional violence. Multivariate results reveal that sexual abuse and neglect …

The Continuing Relevance Of Family Income For Religious Participation: U.S. White Catholic Church Attendance In The Late 20th Century, Philip Schwadel, John D. Mccarthy, Hart M. Nelsen Jun 2009

The Continuing Relevance Of Family Income For Religious Participation: U.S. White Catholic Church Attendance In The Late 20th Century, Philip Schwadel, John D. Mccarthy, Hart M. Nelsen

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

The relevance of family income for religious participation in the United States has been largely ignored in recent decades. Addressing this neglect, we focus our attention primarily upon white Catholics, the poorer of whom we reason have fewer options to participate in the context of an increasingly middle-class Church. Analyzing the 1972-2006 cumulative General Social Survey data, we show that net of all other factors low-income white Catholics attend church less often than other white Catholics, although social integration mechanisms significantly moderate the effects of income. Additional analyses suggest that the effects of income on church attendance are greatest for …

Hetero-Romantic Love And Heterosexiness In Children’S G-Rated Films, Karin A. Martin, Emily Kazyak Jun 2009

Hetero-Romantic Love And Heterosexiness In Children’S G-Rated Films, Karin A. Martin, Emily Kazyak

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

This article examines accounts of heterosexuality in media for children. The authors analyze all the G-rated films grossing $100 million dollars or more between 1990 and 2005 and find two main accounts of heterosexuality. First, heterosexuality is constructed through hetero-romantic love relationships as exceptional, powerful, magical, and transformative. Second, heterosexuality outside of relationships is constructed through portrayals of men gazing desirously at women’s bodies. Both of these findings have implications for our understanding of heteronormativity. The first is seemingly at odds with theories that claim that heterosexuality’s mundane, assumed, everyday ordinariness lends heteronormativity its power. In fact, the authors suggest …

Diversity, Distribution And Role Of Wild Crucifers In Major Cabbage And Kale Growing Areas Of Kenya, R. Kahuthia-Gathu, B. Löhr, H. M. Poehling, P. K. Mbugua

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An investigation of the diversity and distribution of wild crucifer species and their importance for cultivated crucifers was conducted during 2005 and 2006 in the highland and mid-altitude semi-arid areas of Kenya. Thirteen species of wild crucifers in nine genera were recorded: Raphanus raphanistrum, Erucastrum arabicum, Sisymbrium officinale, Crambe kilimandscharica, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Rorippa nudiuscula, Ro. micrantha, Ro. microphylla, Lepidium bonariense, Coronopus didymus, Brassica rapa, B. juncea and an unidentified Brassica species. Highland areas had significantly higher species diversity and species richness than mid-altitude semi-arid areas. Species richness, diversity and evenness varied with season and location. Raphanus raphanistrum was the dominant …

An Agenda For Teaching International Economic Law In Indian Law Schools, Seema Sapra Jun 2009

An Agenda For Teaching International Economic Law In Indian Law Schools, Seema Sapra

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

At this time of India’s ongoing ‘Great Transformation,’ legal educators and researchers in India need to pay greater attention to international economic law (IEL). New agendas for IEL teaching in India must derive from and support domestic ‘reform’ objectives. An important conceptual links between broad issues of reform in India and IEL teaching in the classroom relates to what reform means or should mean. It is suggested that IEL teaching in India more actively engage with domestic issues arising on account of the liberalisation of India’s external trade as well as the liberalisation of its domestic economy, and also bigger …

Moral, Legal, And Functional Dimensions Of Inclusive Service Delivery In Catholic Schools, Martin Scanlan Jun 2009

Moral, Legal, And Functional Dimensions Of Inclusive Service Delivery In Catholic Schools, Martin Scanlan

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Catholic school educators are morally compelled by Catholic social teaching to foster inclusive service delivery for students who have traditionally been marginalized in schools, including students in poverty, students of color, English language learners, and students with special needs. This article applies this moral context to analyze the legal obligations of Catholic schools under Section 504 to serve students with special needs. It argues that as Catholic schools follow Catholic social teaching by developing inclusive service delivery to meet students ' special needs, their legal obligations grow. The article concludes by describing the learning consultant model, a system of service …

Categories In Evaluation Of Innovative Activities Of Competing Firms, Xuesong Geng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

I examine how the stock market evaluation of a firm’s innovative activities is influenced by the categorization of the firm and its rivals. I find that innovations that blur the industry boundaries cause negative evaluation bias, but the competing innovations by outside industry firms cause positive evaluation bias in firm valuation.

Interpersonal Metadiscourse Categories In Two Egyptian Newspapers Concerning The 2007 "Constitutional Amendments", Ahmad Abdelmoneim

Archived Theses and Dissertations

This research-work aims at studying the use of metadiscourse markers by foreign learners of Arabic to enhance their writing skills. First there is an introduction which explains the role of metadiscourse markers in writing within the framework of the two paradigms of meaning suggested by Halliday, i.e. the textual and the interspersonal. Second two hypotheses on which the research-work is built are spelled out. The first hypothesis assumes that writers will always use the two basic paradigms of meaning suggested by Haliday as far as metadiscourse markers are concerned. The Second one postulates that foreign learners of Arabic acquire solid …

Diaspora-Driven Development In Stateless Somalia: All Relationships Are Local Relationships, Joseph Alan Scheibel Jun 2009

Diaspora-Driven Development In Stateless Somalia: All Relationships Are Local Relationships, Joseph Alan Scheibel

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In the wake of state collapse, Somali society today has become decidedly globalized, leaning heavily on capital from its widely-dispersed diaspora funneled in through the conduits of an informal economic system for both subsistence and overall economic livelihood. Despite the great distances often separating them, Somalis remain linked by common ethnic and cultural bonds. These links are both social and economic, and are heavily reliant on telecommunications technology, a key concept discussed in this study. The Somali economy, driven largely by the widespread informal Hawalaad financial transfer system, bypasses the commercial and financial channels that have been voided by the …

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly Jun 2009

Food Anxieties: Issues For The Food Sector, Denise Kelly

Doctoral

People have become obsessed with the harmful effects of eating (Rozin, 1999) and are experiencing ‘food anxiety’, a by-product of modern food. The aim of this research was to explore the nature of food anxiety in Ireland and the potential implications for the food sector. The research objectives were to determine the range of issues causing food anxiety in Irish consumers; to investigate the impact of food anxiety on food choice behaviour; to examine the potential of food anxiety as a segmentation variable for categorizing consumers; and to identify antecedents to the experience of food anxiety. A sequential, mixed methodology …

Adolescents’ Educational Outcomes: Racial And Ethnic Variations In Peer Network Importance, Franklin Goza, Igor Ryabov Jun 2009

Adolescents’ Educational Outcomes: Racial And Ethnic Variations In Peer Network Importance, Franklin Goza, Igor Ryabov

Sociology Faculty Publications

Little attention has been paid to the role of peer social capital in the school context, especially as a predictor of adolescents’ academic outcomes. This study uses a nationally representative (N = 13,738, female = 51%), longitudinal sample and multilevel models to examine how peer networks impact educational achievement and attainment. Results reveal that, in addition to those factors typically associated with academic outcomes (e.g., school composition), two individual-level peer network measures, SES and heterogeneity, had significant effects. Although educational attainment was generally worse in low SES schools, for all ethnic groups higher attainment was associated with attending schools …

Review of 1) Robert Epstein, The case against adolescence: Rediscovering the adult in every teen (Quill Driver Books, 2007), and 2) Roger J. R. Levesque, Adolescents, media, and the law: What developmental science reveals and free speech requires (Oxford University Press, 2007).

Robert Epstein believes American teens are in chaos. They drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, abuse a variety of other drugs, have eating disorders, contract sexual diseases, and get pregnant. They carry weapons, join gangs, and commit all manner of crimes. They partake of a mindless peer culture. They are angry, violent, depressed, and suicidal. Not all of them, of …

Improving Electronics With Use: Design To Wear, Sung Hye Park Jun 2009

Improving Electronics With Use: Design To Wear, Sung Hye Park

Theses

Today's products are designed to exude high fashion and flawless beauty, which are inevitably susceptible to deterioration over time, making the aesthetic value disappear due to wear and tear. The purpose of this thesis is to design modern products not only to improve their aesthetic value and meaning but also their usability, while taking advantage of wear and tear in order to improve value. The majority of previous studies focused on preventing the deterioration of products, whereas, this thesis approaches the opposite view of allowing wear to boost the product's value, thereby improving functionality with desirable appearance by design. The …

Could Breach Of Contract Be Immoral?, Seana Shiffrin Jun 2009

Could Breach Of Contract Be Immoral?, Seana Shiffrin

Michigan Law Review

Some scholars defend the contract law's ban on punitive damage awards on the grounds that breach of contract, in itself, is not morally wrong. In this Article, I offer two responses. First, I refute one prevalent argument of Steven Shavell's in support of this view. Shavell argues that contractual breach is not immoral in those cases in which the legal regime would offer expectation damages because the contracting parties would not have agreed to require performance had they explicitly deliberated about the circumstances occasioning the breach. I criticize his argument for failing to justify this hypothetical-contract approach and, in any …

An Evaluation Of The Missouri Master Naturalist Program And Implications For Program Expansion, Caroline N. Broun, Charles H. Nilon, Robert A. Pierce Ii Jun 2009

An Evaluation Of The Missouri Master Naturalist Program And Implications For Program Expansion, Caroline N. Broun, Charles H. Nilon, Robert A. Pierce Ii

Journal of Extension

The study reported here evaluated outcomes of the Missouri Master Naturalist Program. We developed a pre-test/post-test/follow-up format to determine if, after the program training, volunteers increased knowledge of key ecological, natural resources, and conservation concepts and issues. We also identified volunteers' motivations for participation in the program and compared their motivation scores with changes in their knowledge scores. Volunteers' knowledge scores increased (P ≤ 0.05) following the training and were maintained 6 months after training. Volunteers ranked values/altruism as important motivations for participating. There was no relationship between volunteers' motivation scores and changes in knowledge scores.

Attitudes And Beliefs That Predict Taiwanese Older Adults' Intentions To Attend Strength And Balance Training Programs, Shih-Fan Lin Jun 2009

Attitudes And Beliefs That Predict Taiwanese Older Adults' Intentions To Attend Strength And Balance Training Programs, Shih-Fan Lin

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The rate of participation in the strength and balance training (SBT) program, an effective fall prevention intervention, is very low among older adults. To increase older adults' participations in SBT programs, this study involved an observational and cross-sectional study design to understand factors that affect Taiwanese older adults' intention to attend SBT programs utilizing the theory of planned behavior. Questionnaires that measured constructs of the theory of planned behavior (attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and behavioral, normative, and control beliefs) were collected from 221 community-dwelling Taiwanese elderly women between the age of 55 and 94. Simple correlations and multiple …
