Not Just A Party In The Parking Lot: An Exploratory Investigation Of The Motives Underlying The Ritual Commitment Of Football Tailgaters, Jenna M. Drenten, Cara Okleshen Peters, Thomas Leigh, Candice R. Hollenbeck

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This study examines the underlying motives within the ritual of football tailgating and the influence of these motives on ritual commitment. Employing an ethnographic approach, methods include participant observation, informal conversations, and formal interviews. Findings indicate that four basic motivations and the dual nature of these motives perpetuate the tailgating ritual: involvement (preparation and participation), social interaction (camaraderie and competition), inter-temporal sentiment (retrospection and prospection), and identity (collectivism and individualism). The data illustrate that the duality of these motives perpetuates consumers’ commitment to the ritual of tailgating and thus motivates participants to continue tailgating over time. Theoretical and sport marketing …

A Cross-Sectional Approach To Institutional Anomie And Gang-Related Homicide, Michael T. Klemp-North Jun 2009

A Cross-Sectional Approach To Institutional Anomie And Gang-Related Homicide, Michael T. Klemp-North

Dissertations

Gangs have recently migrated from major metropolitan areas to suburban and rural communities throughout the United States (Maxson 1998; NAIGA 2005). This migration creates a need for further research and understanding of the gang phenomenon in the United States. One commonly studied aspect of gangs is their propensity to participate in homicide and violent behavior (e.g., Curry and Spergel 1988; Decker and Curry 2002). This tendency has been tested and written about in the literature; however, none of the research addresses the migration and dispersion of gangs throughout states. Therefore, new approaches are needed to better understand gangs and their …

Transferring Social Justice Initiatives Into Lasallian Schools, Rebecca A. Proehl, Sawako Suzuki

Journal of Catholic Education

This article describes a research project that examined the impact of a Lasallian mission formation program on program participants and their institutions. The study found that the program had a powerful impact on the participants personally, and seventy-one percent (71%) became newly involved or recommitted to social justice initiatives upon returning from the program. Two factors, however, significantly predicted the participants’ level of transfer of learning into action: the availability of social support at their home institution and the applicability of their learning to their work. The article concludes with recommendations to help institutional leaders even more intentionally support participants …

An Agenda For Teaching International Economic An Agenda For Teaching International Economic Law In Indian Law Schools, Seema Sapra Jun 2009

An Agenda For Teaching International Economic An Agenda For Teaching International Economic Law In Indian Law Schools, Seema Sapra

Indian Journal of International Economic Law

At this time of India’s ongoing ‘Great Transformation,’ legal educators and researchers in India need to pay greater attention to international economic law (IEL). New agendas for IEL teaching in India must derive from and support domestic ‘reform’ objectives. An important conceptual links between broad issues of reform in India and IEL teaching in the classroom relates to what reform means or should mean. It is suggested that IEL teaching in India more actively engage with domestic issues arising on account of the liberalisation of India’s external trade as well as the liberalisation of its domestic economy, and also bigger …

Kissing In Marital And Cohabiting Relationships: Effects On Blood Lipids, Stress, And Relationship Satisfaction, Justin P. Boren, Kory Floyd, Annegret F. Hannawa, Colin Hesse, Breanna Mcewan, Alice E. Veksler Jun 2009

Kissing In Marital And Cohabiting Relationships: Effects On Blood Lipids, Stress, And Relationship Satisfaction, Justin P. Boren, Kory Floyd, Annegret F. Hannawa, Colin Hesse, Breanna Mcewan, Alice E. Veksler

Communication

Affection exchange theory and previous research suggest that affectionate behavior has stress-ameliorating effects. On this basis, we hypothesized that increasing affectionate behavior would effect improvements in physical and psychological conditions known to be exacerbated by stress. This study tested this proposition by examining the effects of increased romantic kissing on blood lipids, perceived stress, depression, and relationship satisfaction. Fifty-two healthy adults who were in marital or cohabiting romantic relationships provided self-report data for psychological outcomes and blood samples for hematological tests, and were then randomly assigned to experimental and control groups for a 6-week trial. Those in the experimental group …

Psychologism And American Instructional Technology, David Wiley, Bekir Gur

Faculty Publications

Note: This is not the final draft of the article. The centrality of psychology in the field of instructional technology has never been comprehensively questioned; most instructional technologists have assumed that (behaviorist, cognitivist, constructivist, or another) psychology is the natural foundation for education and thus for instructional technology. The driving question of this article is: What are the problems of psychologism as found in the theories and practices of instructional technology? We present a brief genealogy of American instructional technology in relation to the influence of psychology; review critical psychology and discuss some problems of psychologism focusing on positivism, metaphysics, …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 68 - A Quota Management System For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (Rliac), Department Of Fisheries, Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

There has been much debate over the past two decades on the most appropriate long-term management framework for Western Australia’s Western Rock Lobster Fishery. More recently a debate over whether the fishery would be best managed under a Quota Management System (QMS) or the continuation of the current Input Control Management System (ICMS) culminated in an industry vote coordinated by the Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) in 2006 . The outcome of this vote resulted in industry support to retain the existing management system based on input controls2 , however, shortly after the vote there was a renewed level of …

Motivated To Serve: An Empirical Examination Of Motivation And Consequences In The Public And Nonprofit Organizations, Sung Min Park, Jessica Word

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

This article draws upon a sample of nonprofit and state government managers to examine the role that service motivation plays in both sectors. The research addressed three main questions: 1) what are the main motivational types and constructs of managers in the public and nonprofit sectors? 2) what differences exist between these sectors in terms of level of motivation? And 3) what are the long-term and short-term consequences of different types of motivation? Our findings suggest that in many ways public and nonprofit managers are similar in terms of the importance of intrinsic versus extrinsic rewards. Public and nonprofit managers …

Reforming Education In Pakistan – Tracing Global Links, Sajid Ali, Malik S. A. Tahir Jun 2009

Reforming Education In Pakistan – Tracing Global Links, Sajid Ali, Malik S. A. Tahir

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper is about tracing global links in national education reforms in Pakistan. The paper tries to describe globalization and its general effects on national policies. It particularly highlights the effects of globalization on education reforms, which are: competitiveness-driven, finance-driven and equity-driven. In light of these global education reform patterns the paper explores the major educational reforms being pursued in Pakistan since 1990s. The paper argues that globalization has seriously challenged the national reform policies, which are now becoming more and more globally driven. Rather than out rightly rejecting all global policies, engaging critically with them is the stance of …

Contrasting Influences Of Entrepreneurs On Destination Development, Theresa Ryan, Ziene Mottiar, Bernadettte Quinn Jun 2009

Contrasting Influences Of Entrepreneurs On Destination Development, Theresa Ryan, Ziene Mottiar, Bernadettte Quinn

Conference papers

This article argues that contemporary debates concerning the impacts of globalisation on the development of local tourism areas uncovers a dynamic interplay between global and local forces. Moving beyond traditional arguments that view tourism places as outcomes of global forces (Relph, 1976; Castells, 1993; Barnet & Cavanagh, 1995; Dunning & Hamdani, 1997) the research presents an overview of the significance of local entrepreneurs on tourism destination development.

The article draws from existing literature on models of tourism development including; Chrystaller (1963), Miossec (1976), Butler (1980), Gormsen (1981), Lundgren (1982), Keller (1987), Lewis (1998), Ritchie & Crouch (2003), as well as …

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson Jun 2009

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson

Economics Faculty Publication Series

The assumption that contracts are largely impersonal, rational, voluntary agreements drawn up between self-interested individual agents is a convenient fiction, necessary for analysis using conventional economic methods. Papers prepared for a recent conference on ethics and international debt were shaped by just such an assumption. The adequacy of this approach is, however, challenged by evidence about who is affected by international debt, how contracts are actually made and followed, the behavior of actors in financial markets, and the motivations of scholars themselves. This essay uses insights from feminist and relational scholarship from several disciplines to analyze the reasons for this …

Adaptive Policymaking: Evolving And Applying Emergent Solutions For U.S. Communications Policy, Richard S. Whitt

Federal Communications Law Journal

This Article presents some specific ways that U.S. policymakers should use teachings from the latest thinking in economics to create a conceptual framework in order to grapple with current controversies in communications law and regulation. First, it provides a brief overview of Emergence Economics, with an emphasis on the "rough formula" of emergence and the unique role of technological change in creating and furthering innovation and economic growth. Second, this paper explicates the general concept of "Adaptive Policymaking" by governments and includes some proposed guiding principles, an outline of the public policy design space, and an adaptive toolkit to be …

Viewpoint Diversity And Media Ownership, C. Edwin Baker Jun 2009

Viewpoint Diversity And Media Ownership, C. Edwin Baker

Federal Communications Law Journal

A recent technically sophisticated study of the impact of media mergers on viewpoint diversity that found the impact is contextually variable should be entirely irrelevant to proper policy debates about regulation of media ownership. This Article examines the real reasons to oppose concentrated ownership and considers how the recent study went wrong.
