The Corruption Enigma: Understanding Success And Failure Of Corruption Reform Programs In Highly Corrupt Countries, Matthew T. Hall Jul 2009

The Corruption Enigma: Understanding Success And Failure Of Corruption Reform Programs In Highly Corrupt Countries, Matthew T. Hall

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

There exists a corruption enigma. Experts and analysts largely agree on the institutional reforms that constitute successful corruption reform programs—this is the 'Corruption Consensus.' Unfortunately, the well-designed and resourced reform programs created from this consensus and intended to improve national institutional capabilities rarely work. Yet the reform programs patterned on the Corruption Consensus continue on. Everyone agrees what to do in order to reform corruption but everyone also agrees that it will not work. This is the Corruption Enigma.

This dissertation employs a structured, focused analysis to determine the reasons for varying success levels between otherwise similar countries in order …

Local Food Systems In Central Illinois: An Economic Impact Analysis, Joseph Lauchlan, Viktor Schrader

Master's Theses - Economics

Local food movements nationwide have gained traction in their popularity and relevance as an alternative to the more dominant industrial, specialized system. We use the IMPLAN Modeling System to measure the financial and employment impacts of an increase in vegetable and fruit production in …

A Pedagogy Of Process: Using Arts Based Research With Community Development Co-Researchers To Explore Campus Community Dialogue, Brian Hand

Theses

This thesis will outline how I employed an arts informed participatory research process with four women members of the Southend family resource centre in Wexford town. The primary context for this research was the introduction of a module in community based learning on the BA (hons) in Art at the Wexford Campus of I.T. Carlow combined with a desire to participate more actively in the community sector outside the campus. The choice of an arts based methodology was to capture knowledge in a multifaceted way, to give depth to the many meanings of individual experiences and finally to suggest a …

What Drives Research-Focused University Academics To Want To Teach Effectively?: Examining Achievement, Self-Efficacy And Self-Esteem, Linda Evans, Maria Bertani Tress Jul 2009

What Drives Research-Focused University Academics To Want To Teach Effectively?: Examining Achievement, Self-Efficacy And Self-Esteem, Linda Evans, Maria Bertani Tress

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

What motivates research-focused academics, employed at a leading research university, to want to teach well – particularly considering that many of them admit to prioritising research above teaching? Why do they not simply settle for expending as little time as possible on their teaching planning and preparation, delivering run-of- the-mill, lack-lustre seminars and lectures that fail to inspire their students? These are the central questions addressed in this article, which revisits and re-analyses data from a 1993-4 case study of teaching and learning in a UK research-intensive university. Selected qualitative data from the original study are used to present an …

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw Jul 2009

Evaluating Gender Bias In Ratings Of University Instructors’ Teaching Effectiveness, Suzanne Young, Leslie Rush, Dale Shaw

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender bias in student ratings of effective teaching. Students in five colleges were invited to rate instructors on three factors: interpersonal characteristics, pedagogical characteristics, and course content characteristics. We analyzed group differences based on student gender, instructor gender, and student level. Ratings of pedagogical characteristics and course content characteristics yielded significant interactions between student gender and instructor gender, but no differences were found among groups on interpersonal characteristics. We concluded that gender bias plays a role in students’ views of effective teaching in terms of how students evaluate pedagogical and content …

Perceptions Of Visual Culture In Turkish Pre-Service Art Teacher Preparation, Nur Balkir Jul 2009

Perceptions Of Visual Culture In Turkish Pre-Service Art Teacher Preparation, Nur Balkir

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

One of the key tasks of the university in the 21st century is to nurture visually literate students in the information age. Given that we live in a very highly visualized world, it is increasingly important that students are educated as critical viewers who are able to respond to visual images in an analytical and selective manner. The education of critical viewers starts with art teachers who appreciate and understand the embedded value of imagery within cultures, cultural differences, students’ knowledge and experience, critical thought, and reflection. The creation of progressive models in art teacher education that connect art and …

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

In 2004, an upper Midwestern school district received a grant to administer content-specific professional development to teachers of American history. A series of nine master’s level, degree-eligible courses were developed and administered by the local university’s history department. At the conclusion of the grant activities in spring of 2008, the teacher-participants were invited to be interviewed. The purpose of the interviews was to determine teacher motivation for taking the course and each teacher’s overall impression of the effectiveness of the professors and course content. Additional data were gathered including demographic data such as years of experience and level of education …

Personal Reflection: Lessons From My Students And Other Reflections On Sotl, Kathleen Mckinney

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: As I sit here in my office ‘chair,’ both literally and figuratively, I am reflecting on my relationship with the scholarship of teaching and learning. My thoughts wander to influences on my career in SoTL, the impact SoTL has had on my professional life, the dilemmas in the field that I continue to ponder, ways we advocate for and support SoTL work, and my hopes for the future of SoTL. As I write this, it occurs to me that I have been directly involved in SoTL for 25 years—a quarter of a century! This fact makes me feel both …
