Exploring Hurtful Communication From College Teachers To Students: A Mixed Methods Study, Michelle Marie Maresh

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this study was to extend teacher misbehavior research via an investigation of teacher communication that is perceived as hurtful by college students. While previous research on teacher misbehavior focuses on the content-oriented dimension of teacher-student communication, this study goes a step further by also considering the relational dimension. A mixed methods approach is used in this study to explore the function of hurtful communication in the teacher-student relationship. There were 34 participants in the first, qualitative, phase of this study; whereas the second, quantitative, phase of this study was comprised of 208 participants.

Identified in the results …

Assuming Responsibility: The Little Rock Branch Of The American Association Of University Women And The Little Rock School Desegregation Crisis, Kara D. Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

In September 1958, Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus declared the four high schools in Little Rock closed in order to avoid court-ordered desegregation. Many organizations throughout the city protested and pushed for a re-opening of the schools. One of these was the Little Rock branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). As a group of educated women with prior activist experiences, the branch was particularly well-positioned to make a difference in the city. Furthermore, the national AAUW organization advocated that, during this period of societal change, branches act as catalysts for rational discussion within their communities. The Little Rock …

'City Air Makes Free’: A Multi-Level, Cross-National Analysis Of Self-Efficacy, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl, Christopher M. Huggins Dec 2009

'City Air Makes Free’: A Multi-Level, Cross-National Analysis Of Self-Efficacy, Jeffrey S. Debies-Carl, Christopher M. Huggins

Sociology Faculty Publications

The effects of cities on the subjective states of individuals have been the subject of continuous inquiry. Recent research has demonstrated potential links between immediate environments and individual outcomes such as perceived powerlessness. However, the results of such studies are inconsistent and fail to account for the greater societal environment in which observations occur. Using a more comparative, cross-national sample and multi-level modeling, we retest the expectation that the immediate physical and social environment influences feelings of powerlessness, and extend the test to consider urbanism operating at societal levels beyond the local. Controlling for demographic composition, we find that urban …

Like Oil And Water Or Chocolate And Peanut Butter? Ethnic Diversity And Social Participation Of Young People In England, Elena Fumagalli, Laura Fumagalli Dec 2009

Like Oil And Water Or Chocolate And Peanut Butter? Ethnic Diversity And Social Participation Of Young People In England, Elena Fumagalli, Laura Fumagalli

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper studies the impact of ethnic diversity on social participation of young people. We first propose a theoretical model in which the agents choose between structured and unstructured social activities by taking into account the ethnic composition of the groups they join. We test our predictions using English census data together with the `Longitudinal Survey of Young People in England' (LSYPE) and we find that ethnic segregation increases the probability of hanging around near home, while ethnic fractionalization decreases it. Furthermore, more structured activities are not affected by ethnic fractionalization. Finally, we use an IV strategy based on both …

Non-Bossy Social Classifcation, Dinko Dimitrov, Clemens Puppe Dec 2009

Non-Bossy Social Classifcation, Dinko Dimitrov, Clemens Puppe

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We consider the problem of how societies should be partitioned into classes if individuals express their views about who should be put with whom in the same class. A non-bossiness condition makes the social aggregator dependent only on those cells of the individual partitions the society members classify themselves in. This information is used to construct for each profile of views an opinion graph. By means of natural sovereignty and liberalism requirements, we characterize the non-bossy aggregators generating partitions in which the social classes are refinements of the connected components in the opinion graph.

Lmproving Education Through Brain Research, Lisa J. Ihnen

Master of Education Program Theses

Educational practices are improved because of brain research. Cognitive and behavior sciences have provided important concepts for educational practice. Within recent decades, neuroscience has also contributed to the field of brain research, thus enhancing our understanding oflearning. Three main concepts from neuroscience are explored: synaptogenesis, critical periods, and enriched environments. When the entire body of knowledge from all disciplines of brain research is viewed together, then fmdings can be applied to educational practices.

The Impact Of Third Places On Community Quality Of Life, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Cheryl Campanella Bracken, Guowei Jian, Mary F. Casey Dec 2009

The Impact Of Third Places On Community Quality Of Life, Leo Wayne Jeffres, Cheryl Campanella Bracken, Guowei Jian, Mary F. Casey

Communication Faculty Publications

Older cities struggling with issues of survival focus on jobs and the economy, but competition requires all cities to pay attention to the quality of life that attracts residents. Creating such an inviting environment includes “third places” that foster community and communication among people outside of home and work, yet we have little empirical evidence that speaks to the subject, or their importance for a community’s quality of life. Here we report on a national U.S. survey that asked people to identify such places in their community, producing a wide variety of “third places” that ranged from the most popular …

Dynamic Dialogue: A Multi-Perspective Approach Towards Cultural Competence, Daria C. Crawley, Rex L. Crawley

Organization Management Journal

Interculturalism and race relations are becoming more complex as America becomes more diverse. Recent attention focused on universities’ admissions programs aimed at diversifying the student body only convey a segment of campus efforts addressing diversity. Curriculum development initiatives speak to diversity concerns through course topics centered on issues such as race and gender by stimulating conversations among students and the instructor. This article presents two models for integrating dynamic dialogues/conversations about race across academic curricula. These perspectives shed insight into the challenges of communicating in an intercultural environment. One model highlights attempts at integrating dynamic dialogue programmatically and the other …

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy Dec 2009

Visualizing Population Dynamics Of Alaska's Arctic Communities, Lawrence C. Hamilton, Angela M. Mitiguy

Sociology

Abstract

Arctic demography has previously been reviewed on a large scale, across the circumpolar nations. We look instead at some recent population dynamics on sub-regional to community scales, focusing on Arctic Alaska. Detailed graphics depicting yearly population changes from 1990 to 2006 in 43 selected Arctic Alaska towns and villages and all 27 of the state's "county-equivalent entities" (e.g., boroughs) have been published online in connection with two International Polar Year projects. Seemingly comparable places within the same borough have taken widely divergent paths. Birth rates generally exceed death rates, although both are high. Year-to-year and place-to-place variations are dominated …

Singing Across The Scars Of Wrong: Johnny Cash And His Struggle For Social Justice, Kenneth D. Tunnell, Mark S. Hamm Dec 2009

Singing Across The Scars Of Wrong: Johnny Cash And His Struggle For Social Justice, Kenneth D. Tunnell, Mark S. Hamm

Justice Studies Faculty and Staff Research

The life and music of Johnny Cash are explored in this article as we detail his commitment to social justice. Situating his politics and biography within a cultural criminology orientation, we show that Cash's lived politics and edgy music reflect his concerns with the working class, the dispossessed, the rebellious, the American Indian, and above all, the convict. A pusher of social causes, Cash advocated for prison reform through decades of social activism and public and private politics. DOI: 10.1177/1741659009346015
