Parent-Adolescent Discrepancies In Ratings Of Youth Victimization: Associations With Psychological Adjustment, Kimberly Goodman Sep 2009

Parent-Adolescent Discrepancies In Ratings Of Youth Victimization: Associations With Psychological Adjustment, Kimberly Goodman

Theses and Dissertations

Epidemiological research indicates that parents report lower levels of youths’ exposure to violence than youth self-report, and theory suggests that such discrepancies reflect parents’ lack of knowledge of youth victimization and impaired ability to help children cope with victimization. This study extends prior research examining the implications of parent-youth informant discrepancies on ratings of victimization. Latent class analysis (LCA) was employed to identify groups of dyads distinguished by patterns of parent and youth report of victimization, uncovering heterogeneity based on patterns of parent-youth ratings of victimization. Analyses examined how latent classes reflecting parent-youth agreement on victimization were related to adjustment …

What's Race Got To Do With It? Press Coverage Of The Latino Electorate In The 2008 Presidential Primary Season, Laura Gomez

Faculty Scholarship

This article presents a critical analysis of press coverage of Latinos and the presidential election during the Democratic Primary, from January through June 2008. The foundation of this article is a content analysis of 408 articles published in four newspapers about Latinos and the presidential election during the primary season. The four newspapers -- The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune and The Dallas Morning News -- were selected because they are well respected as newspapers of record and because they represent diverse regions of the country (two from the northeast, two from the southwest). Each …

Regulating Polygamy: Intimacy, Default Rules, And Bargaining For Equality, Adrienne D. Davis Sep 2009

Regulating Polygamy: Intimacy, Default Rules, And Bargaining For Equality, Adrienne D. Davis

Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Faculty Research

Most legal scholarship about polygamy has approached it in one of two ways. Some have framed it as a question of how far constitutional protection for religious freedom and privacy rights extends, including what we might think of as "intimacy liberty," particularly in light of Lawrence v. Texas. Others have debated decriminalization, based on the contested effects of polygamy on matters ranging from women’s subordination to fraudulent behavior to democracy. This Essay shifts attention from the constitutionality and decriminalization debates to a new set of questions: whether and how polygamy might be effectively recognized and regulated, consistent with contemporary social …

Black Female Student's Experiences In A Predominantly White High Achieving Suburban School: Implications For Theory And Practice, Erika Raissa Nash

Dissertations

Previous literature states that Black females experience cultural discontinuity, academic and social stressors, and inequities that are associated with psychological distress and risky behaviors as a result of not fitting into the school environment. These patterns have been found to exist in low-income, underachieving, urban schools, but middle class, high-achieving, suburban, and predominantly White schools have not been examined. Primarily through semi-structured interviews, this qualitative study investigated the experiences of 12 Black females who attend a predominantly White, high achieving suburban school in a Midwestern state. Utilizing a grounded theory approach, the data collected suggests that there are two groups …

Regional Young Child Poverty In 2008: Rural Midwest Sees Increased Poverty, While Urban Northeast Rates Decrease, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

In 2008, America's recession affected poverty rates for children under age 6 unevenly, with rates in the rural Midwest rising significantly, while rates in northeastern central cities fell slightly. And in the rural South, where more than 30 percent of young children are poor, poverty rates for young children persisted at a very high rate. This is an analysis of American Community Survey data released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Exploring The Human Rights Implications Of Microfinance Initiatives, Rebecca Farrer Sep 2009

Exploring The Human Rights Implications Of Microfinance Initiatives, Rebecca Farrer

International Journal of Legal Information

This Article explores Microfinance and microcredit (“MFI”) programs from several perspectives, with particular emphasis on human rights issues. These programs involve making small loans to people who would otherwise be unable to borrow money to facilitate them starting their own businesses: frequently, the programs focus on women borrowers in developing countries. The emphasis of MFI programs on women in developing countries makes it important to consider these programs in terms of both women’s and indigenous rights, while MFI as an approach to poverty merits a discussion of economic rights. Part I of the article will explore the concept and scope …

The Qualitative Report

In Interviewing for Education and Social Science Research: The Gateway Approach, Carolyn Lunsford Mears outlines an approach to in-depth interviewing in qualitative research that draws upon educational criticism, oral history, and poetic display. Mears describes this narrator centered approach as including the development of an insider’s perspective and the use of excerpted narratives. She also provides useful guides and examples in the appendices to the book, making the text especially helpful to the novice qualitative researcher

Incorporating Information Literacy Into Introductory Courses, Melissa Chesanko, Arnita Sitasari, Laura Trent, Jayne Chapple

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

This panel, consisting of instructors of the Introduction to Women’s Studies course, is concerned with including information literacy and skills training concepts into curriculum in a way that supplements our subject matter. In an introductory level course there is usually a broad range of experience in information literacy. As may be expected, upper class students have a better understanding of the research process than first year students and general education students have less interest in subject-specific research than majors or minors. Both of these predispose students to resistance to new techniques. Despite these differences, we found that most students stated …
