The Great Bailout Of 2008-09, Frederick Tung

My task today is to talk about the financial crisis. I only have a short time to talk, so rather than try to give you a comprehensive analysis of events, I'm going to offer some of my own idiosyncratic takes on what has been happening. In addition, I will introduce my own small reform proposal for regulating bank risk taking. So, I'll give you a little bit of news, a little bit of weather, a little bit of everything.
Where are we now? Let us begin with a statement Henry Paulson made six months ago while Bear Steams was getting …
Foreword – Will Hpv Vaccines Prevent Cervical Cancers Among Poor Women Of Color?: Global Health Policy At The Intersection Of Human Rights And Intellectual Property Law, Kevin Outterson
Faculty Scholarship
Cervical cancer is a disease of social inequality. Women with access to effective screening and treatment rarely die from cervical cancer. The burden of cervical cancer mortality falls most heavily among the poorer women of the world. Cervical cancer starkly illustrates global inequality across race, sex and class. Cervical cancer disproportionately kills poor women of color. The HPV vaccine is a triumph of science.
The Place Of History And Philosophy In The Moral Reading Of The American Constitution, James E. Fleming
The Place Of History And Philosophy In The Moral Reading Of The American Constitution, James E. Fleming
Faculty Scholarship
Dworkin argues that commitment to interpretive fidelity requires that we recognize that the Constitution embodies abstract moral principles rather than laying down a particular historical conception, and that interpreting those principles requires fresh judgments of political theory about how they are best understood. This interpretive strategy — Dworkin's ‘moral reading’ of the Constitution — stands in opposition to the narrow originalists' claim that interpretive fidelity requires following the rules laid down by the framers of the Constitution. Some theorists have responded to the originalists by attempting to carve out an intermediate theory between narrow originalism and the moral reading. Dworkin …

Protecting Hiv Positive Women’S Human’S Rights: Recommendations For The Obama Administration, Aziza Ahmed, Catherine Hanssens, Brook Kelly

To bring the United States in line with prevailing human rights standards, its National HIV/AIDS Strategy will need to explicitly commit to a human rights framework when developing programmes and policies that serve the unaddressed needs of women. This paper focuses on two aspects of the institutionalized mistreatment of people with HIV: 1) the criminalization of their consensual sexual conduct; and 2) the elimination of informed and documented consensual participation in their diagnosis through reliance on mandatory and opt-out testing policies. More than half of US states have HIV-specific laws criminalizing the consensual sexual activity of people with HIV, regardless …

Financial Market Destabilization And The Role Of Credit Default Swaps: An International Perspective On The Sec's Role Going Forward, Janis P. Sarra

International financial market participants and regulators are watching as the United States attempts to come to grips with the most serious consequences of the crisis in financial markets. Multiple strategies are being used, including bailouts, bank stimulus packages, recapitalization of financial institutions, insolvency restructurings, mortgage programs, guarantees for interbank lending, and direct asset purchases. The causes of the financial turmoil are numerous and complex, but one underlying cause was activities in the credit derivatives market. The fragmentation of regulation over the U.S. financial system, with at least five oversight bodies, has arguably resulted in significant gaps in regulatory oversight. The …

Accessing Insolvent Consumer Debtors, Challenges And Strategies For Empirical Research, Janis P. Sarra, Danielle Sarra

Insolvency law policy is best informed by a comprehensive understanding of the policy objectives of particular measures and the practical outcomes of particular choices. Yet there continues to be a lack of empirical research in Canada in respect of consumer insolvency, its underlying causes and its outcomes. Debtors' or bankrupts' experience with the insolvency system is almost impossible to gauge with the data now collected. Research funding for legal, economic and sociological scholars in the insolvency area continues to be very limited. This paper examines current challenges and strategies for empirical research on consumer insolvency in Canada. It explores options …

Complications during childbirth and pregnancy are a main source of death and disability among women of reproductive age. Approximately 536,000 women die from pregnancy-related complications each year. Developing countries suffer most profoundly, accounting for 99% of deaths. The world's nations, by endorsing U.N. Millennium Development Goals, recognized that most deaths are preventable; they have pledged to reduce maternal mortality by 75% by 2015. This Article assesses the barriers presented by user fees - formal charges for health services still charged by many countries - to the attainment of MDGs. It shows that user fees hamper healthcare access, particularly in emergency …

Design And Implementation Of A Computational Cluster For High Performance Design And Modeling Of Integrated Circuits, Charles J. Gruener
Theses
Modern microelectronic engineering fabrication involves hundreds of processing steps beginning with design, simulation and modeling. Tremendous data is acquired, managed and processed. Bringing together Information Technology (IT) into a functional system for microelectronic engineering is not a trivial task. Seamless integration of hardware and software is necessary. For this purpose, knowledge of design and fabrication of microelectronic devices and circuits is extremely important along with knowledge of current IT systems. This thesis will explain a design methodology for building and using a computer cluster running software used in the production of microelectronic circuits. The cluster will run a Linux operating …

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Sleep Disturbances: Consideration Of Familial Influences, Gretchen Stuckert Noble
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined the extent to which parenting influences problems with sleep in children referred for an evaluation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Data was collected from parents and/or legal guardians of sixty-three 4- to 12-year old children referred for assessment at an ADHD Evaluation Clinic located at a Midwestern university. Previous literature linking sleep problems to ADHD has typically derived from community and pediatric sleep clinic samples and has largely overlooked children with sub-clinical sleep impairments and/or those whose sleep problems stem from alternate etiologies. More than 60% of parents/caregivers in the current study reported significant child sleep difficulties. …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Survivors of stressful life events and traumatic experiences often report positive psychological changes “...as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances†(Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004, p. 1). Three often reported areas of growth include having a greater appreciation for life in general, new priorities, and an increased significance placed on interpersonal, spiritual or religious issues. Despite reports of positive changes, the literature on stress-related growth (SRG) is inconclusive as to whether SRG is an illusion or represents actual change. For example, no studies to date appear to use longitudinal data, objective indictors, or behavioral measures of change. …

Taming Augustine’S Monstrosity: Aquinas’S Notion Of Use In The Struggle For Moral Growth, Theresa W. Tobin
Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications
In Book VI of his Confessions, Saint Augustine offers a detailed description of one of the most famous cases of weakness of will in the history of philosophy. Augustine characterizes his experience as a monstrous situation in which he both wills and does not will moral growth, but he is at odds to explain this phenomenon. In this paper, I argue that Aquinas’s action theory offers important resources for explaining Augustine’s monstrosity. On Aquinas’s schema, human acts are composed of various operations of intellect and will, and thus are subject to disintegration. In order to capture the gap in …

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse
Theses
U.S. consumers are worried about their privacy and their personal information. High profile cases of identity theft involving companies losing the private information of hundreds of thousands of customers have only served to elevate the mistrust consumers have for companies that collect and share their personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is charged with protecting U.S. consumers from fraud, deception, and unfair business practices in the marketplace; a task made difficult by an overarching need to balance the rights of the individuals against the security needs of the country and the free flow of information required by a free …
Adolescent Technology Usage During Sleep-Time: Does It Influence Their Quality Of Sleep, Attention Difficulties And Academic Performance?, Kristin Dehmler
Adolescent Technology Usage During Sleep-Time: Does It Influence Their Quality Of Sleep, Attention Difficulties And Academic Performance?, Kristin Dehmler
Theses
Many adolescents use the Internet, cell phones, television, and computer and video games on a daily basis. Therefore, an important question for educators is: how is technology affecting adolescents' quality and quantity of sleep, their attention difficulties, and their academic performance? The purpose of the current project was to examine the relationships between adolescent self-reports of technology usage, sleep patterns, attention difficulties and academic achievement. Results indicated that nocturnal technology use has a negative impact on adolescents' quality and quantity of sleep. Furthermore both technology use in general and reported attention difficulties have a negative impact on adolescents' academic achievement. …

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Relationships play a significant role in emotional and physical well-being. Although many people believe that satisfying close relationships constitute the very best thing in life†(Berscheid, 1999, p. 260), the factors which contribute to relationship satisfaction have remained a mystery over the centuries. With almost half of all first marriages ending in divorce (United States Census Bureau, 2002), researchers have the opportunity to investigate potential reasons behind the apparent unhappiness and create interventions to support couples. This paper outlines the different, sometimes contradictory, aspects of marital satisfaction (personality, interactions, and expectations) and proposes a more comprehensive approach to explain some …

A growing literature on professional training and practice ofPsychology advocates that psychologists must be educated on risks and effects of impairment and the importance of self-care. Despite the general recognition of the importance of these issues, they have not been incorporated into training standards such as the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines and Principles of Accreditation (2007). In order to assess the approaches that programs currently adopt to address impairment and self-care, this study extended and updated previous research. A large sample of students ( n = 591) enrolled in APA accredited doctoral training programs in professionalPsychology completed surveys regarding …

Positive Religious Coping And Emotion Regulation As Predictors Of Psychological Well -Being, Angela L. Vredeveld
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Several decades of research in thePsychology of religion have established a positive relationship between religious involvement and well-being. However, research into mediators responsible for this relationship is limited. Two mediators that have been proposed, yet appear to share some overlap, are religious coping and emotion regulation (ER). This project examined whether positive religious coping could be reduced to a form of ER, or whether positive religious coping is associated with distinct affective and psychological health benefits above and beyond ER. Participants included 317 undergraduate students at Indiana State University who completed questionnaires regarding their use of certain ER strategies and …

There is currently very little research investigating the ethical practice of e-therapy, and none that distinguishes between types of therapists in terms of their compliance with ethical codes pertaining to e-therapy. The American Psychological Association does not have ethical standards specific to the provision of e-therapy but the American Counseling Association does. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in ethical compliance for e-therapy websites sponsored by psychologists and e-therapy websites sponsored by professional counselors. Specific ethics codes for the practice of e-therapy of the American Counseling Association were used to generate an assessment instrument, which served as …

Project Management: A Simulation-Based Optimization Method For Dynamic Time-Cost Tradeoff Decisions, Radhamés A. Tolentino Pena
Theses
Project managers face difficult decisions with regard to completing projects on time and within the project budget. A successful project manager not only needs to assure that the project is completed, but also desires to make optimal use of resources and maximize the profitability of the project. The goal of this research is to address the time-cost tradeoff problem associated with selecting from among project activity alternatives under uncertainty. Specifically, activities that make up a project may have several alternatives each with an associated cost and stochastic duration. The final project cost is a result of the time and cost …
The Elimination Of Erosion Phenomena In The Main Cooling Water Pumps In Thermo Power Plant (Tpp) “Kosova B” : [Presentation Given October 7, 2009], Abedin Kabashi
Theses
This Capstone Project will address the erosion phenomena on the impeller blades of the main cooling water pumps in Thermal Power Plant (TPP) “Kosova B”. These are vertical mixed flow pumps and are part of the cooling system that play an important role in TPP “Kosova B”. In this investigation I will study the line between the cooling tower basin and the pumps intake. This line includes the pipe with a 2220 [mm] diameter through which the water, from the cooling tower basin, goes into the pumps intake. In fact we have two lines where one is for unit B1 …
Do “Sea Turtles” Creep Faster Than “Soft-Shell Turtles”: A Quantitative Study Of Academic Performance Of Law Faculty In Premier Chinese Law Schools, Wei Zhang
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Since the adoption of the “Reform and Opening” policy in 1978, China has revived its century long tradition of sending students and scholars to study in western countries. In recent years, the unprecedented economic growth, paired with an increasingly competitive rate of compensation, has attracted a considerable number of such foreign degree holders back home to work or teach. In modern Chinese vocabulary, these returning talents are named as “sea turtles”, a word mimicking the pronunciation of the Chinese equivalent of the English phrase “coming back from abroad”. On the other hand, in compliance with the ancient Chinese rhetorical technique …
The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald
The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Intercountry adoption is a globally politicised institution that triggers strong discourses about whether transplantation to a markedly different country and culture, often into families with racially different parents, negatively affects the children ' s well-being and identity. Although empirical intercountry adoption research has increased elsewhere, Australian-based research has lagged behind. This thesis presents a body of evidence about the well-being and identity of over half the population of 14- to 26-year-old intercountry adoptees in Western Australia, how their well-being changed from 1994 to 2004, how they compare with non-adopted migrant peers and the influence of risk and threat factors. In …
Factors That Influence The Decisions Parents Make When Choosing A Secondary School For Their Children, Rosemary Cahill
Factors That Influence The Decisions Parents Make When Choosing A Secondary School For Their Children, Rosemary Cahill
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
The impetus for this portfolio is the accelerating drift of Australian school students from state-run, free government schools to fee-paying independent and/or Catholic schools within the non-government sector. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data show that between 1996 and 2006, student enrolments in non-government schools grew by 21.5% compared with 1.2% in government schools (Australian Bureau of Statistics [ABS], 2007). In this portfolio, a sociological lens reflective of the pragmatic paradigm is applied to the question of school choice in order to understand parents' thinking behind the choices they are making and, moving forward, how the funding and governance of …
