Relatedness And Competence As Positive Developmental Relatedness And Competence As Positive Developmental Outcomes Of College Learning, Melissa Lopez Reyes, Adrianne Galang

SDRC Publications

For virtually all Filipinos, a college diploma symbolizes the attainment of a major life's goal, along with the hard work that led to its attainment, and the promise of professional success, financial stability, and personal stature.  Completion of a college education being a developmental milestone in actuality or from the perception of students and their families, it behooves human developmental specialists studying the transition from adolescence to adulthood to examine the Filipino college experience.  In particular, it is important to characterize, in the context of school experience, how Filipino youth develop the competencies and outlook for effectively recognizing and assuming …

Spirituality Among Filipino Adolescents, Ron Resurreccion, Roseann Tan-Mansukhani Jan 2009

Spirituality Among Filipino Adolescents, Ron Resurreccion, Roseann Tan-Mansukhani

SDRC Publications

Spirituality is becoming a growing concern and interest among the general public as well as among researchers (Roehlkepartain, King, Wagener & Benson, 2006).   Interest in spirituality, which is a concept highly associated with religion, is evident in the increase of books, magazines, movies, TV shows and seminars that feature such a topic. In the internet, spirituality is also a well-searched topic and most researches in spirituality involve children and adolescents primarily because spirituality is one of the major factors that mold a developing person. Spirituality can be a source of identity and social relationships among young people (Compton, 2005). During …

Lumad's Struggle To Claim Ancestral Domain Right In The Armm: The Tlmadc Perspective, Elena Chiong-Javier

SDRC Publications

In 1993, the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of the Philippines marked an initial victory in their struggle to claim their right to ancestral domain when the Philippine Government provided a window for IPs to establish their right to such claims. Through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the government issued Administrative Order (AO) No. 02, a national policy instrument that set the rules and regulations for the identification, delineation, and recognition of ancestral domain claims. Subsequently, other administrative policies were created to address problems encountered in the issuance and management of Certificates of Ancestral Domain Claim (CADC). These experiences …

Filipino Working Adolescents' Conceptions Of Work, Homer Yabut, Rajiv Amamani, Roberto Mendoza, Howard Chester Lee, Marshall N. Valencia Jan 2009

Filipino Working Adolescents' Conceptions Of Work, Homer Yabut, Rajiv Amamani, Roberto Mendoza, Howard Chester Lee, Marshall N. Valencia

SDRC Publications

The adolescent, already a son/daughter, sibling, student, and friend, sometimes finds yet another role foisted upon him- or herselfthat of the worker. A National Youth Commission survey estimated that the number of so-called “working youth” in the Philippines in 2001 was approximately 12,000,000 (NYC, 2001) and growing. The present study is concerned with these working adolescents and their conceptions of their work: the meaning of work as these young ones see it, the circumstances that drive them to seek a role transition to worker that is typically reserved for adulthood (Arnett, 2001), and the contributions of work to their young …

Eco-Bio-Social Factors Of Vector Density-Developing Effective Eco-Bio-Social Factors Of Vector Density-Developing Effective Approaches To Dengue Control In The Philippines Approaches To Dengue Control In The Philippines, Jesusa Marco

SDRC Publications

Dengue is a disabling, acute infectious disease that is a leading cause of death among children in Southeast Asia. In the language used to describe how it is transmitted, a “vector,” or an organism that can carry a diseasecausing agent (i.e. a virus) without itself succumbing to the disease, passes on this agent to a “host,” or a living being (such as humans) that can be infected by the disease. This study, thus, looks into factors that contribute to sustaining vectors and how they can be managed to decrease the incidence of dengue in the Philippines. In the first phase …

Barkadahan: A Study Of Peer Group Norms And Values Among Filipino Adolescents, Jennifer Ann L. Lajom, Nico Canoy, Rajiv Amarnani, Apryl Mae Parcon, Paula Melizza Valera Jan 2009

Barkadahan: A Study Of Peer Group Norms And Values Among Filipino Adolescents, Jennifer Ann L. Lajom, Nico Canoy, Rajiv Amarnani, Apryl Mae Parcon, Paula Melizza Valera

SDRC Publications

Participation in peer groups plays a critical role in adolescent development and experience. The significance of peer groups in human development is likely salient throughout the lifespan, but there is reason to expect peer group interactions to most significantly influence adolescents and their growth trajectories. Adolescence, as a period, has always been a point of significant biological, cognitive, and social development, beginning with the onset of puberty. It is this transition from childhood to adulthood where adolescents face identity confusion (Erikson, 1968). It is also during this stage when they slowly try to relinquish their dependence on parents and, instead, …

Self-Determination Theory In Motivation To Adopt Physical Activity In Older Adults: A Community Based Approach, Alastair Stewart Jan 2009

Self-Determination Theory In Motivation To Adopt Physical Activity In Older Adults: A Community Based Approach, Alastair Stewart

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Australia has an increasingly aging population with increasing levels of physical inactivity. The potential detrimental effects of these two factors on the health of the community highlight the need to investigate methods to increase physical activity in older Australian adults. The study reported in this thesis formed part of the PATH (Physical Activity Time for Health) Project, a community-based research trial that compared two strategies to increase physical activity in underactive, 60-80 year old men (n = 66) and women (n = 188). Twelve recreation centres were randomised to either a supervised group based walking intervention with behavioural change components, …

Functional Significance Of Glycoprotein Clearance By The Asialoglycoprotein Receptor And The Mannose/Galnac-4-So4 Receptor, Lindsay Steirer Taylor

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Glycosylation plays an important role in many biological functions. Two highly abundant, carbohydrate-specific, endocytic receptors reside in parenchymal and endothelial cells of the liver. Our lab has shown that the asialoglycoprotein receptor: ASGR) is capable of clearing glycoproteins bearing terminal Siaalpha2,6GalNAc as well as ones bearing terminal Gal/ GalNAc and that the Mannose/GalNAc-4-SO4 receptor: MR) is capable of clearing glycoproteins bearing terminal GalNAc-4-SO4. I am taking a genetic approach identifying endogenous ligands for the ASGR and the MR in vivo and establishing the biologic significance of clearing these glycoproteins from the blood. A number of glycosylated hormones such as luteinizing …

Design And Evaluation Of Distributed Algorithms For Placement Of Network Services, Todd Sproull Jan 2009

Design And Evaluation Of Distributed Algorithms For Placement Of Network Services, Todd Sproull

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Network services play an important role in the Internet today. They serve as data caches for websites, servers for multiplayer games and relay nodes for Voice over IP: VoIP) conversations. While much research has focused on the design of such services, little attention has been focused on their actual placement. This placement can impact the quality of the service, especially if low latency is a requirement. These services can be located on nodes in the network itself, making these nodes supernodes. Typically supernodes are selected in either a proprietary or ad hoc fashion, where a study of this placement is …

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In this dissertation, I examine the process of state formation during the Viking/Medieval transition: c. 1050 A.D.) as it took place in the North Atlantic region. Specifically, I use paleoethnobotanical analysis of remains from Quoygrew farm, an archaeological site located on Westray in the Orkney Islands, to examine the reciprocal relationship between farm production and changes associated with state formation and the Viking/Medieval transition. Towards this goal, I analyzed carbonized plant remains from midden contexts as well as from floor deposits, hearths, pit fills, and dumps. Seed densities and distributions reveal a closely integrated system of farm production including cereal …

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao Jan 2009

The Mechanisms And Roles Of Feedback Loops For Visual Processing, Jing Shao

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Signal flow in the brain is not unidirectional; feedback represents a key element in neural signal processing. To address the question on how do neural feedback loops work in terms of synapses, microcircuitry, and systems dynamics, we developed a chick midbrain slice preparation to study and characterize one important feedback loop within the avian visual system: isthmotectal feedbackloop. The isthmotectal feedback loop consists of the optic tectum: OT) and three nucleus isthmi: Imc, Ipc and SLu. The tectal layer 10 neurons project to ipsilateral Imc, Ipc and SLu in a topographic way. In turn Ipc and SLu send back topographical: …

Natural Disorder: The Animal Image In French And British Art Before Darwin, C. 1790-1859, Noelle Paulson Jan 2009

Natural Disorder: The Animal Image In French And British Art Before Darwin, C. 1790-1859, Noelle Paulson

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This study of the animal form in French and British art reveals humanity's shifting self-image as new theories of species transmutation replaced hierarchical models of nature in the half-century before the publication of Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1859. To assert various qualities of difference, distance, similitude, and proximity between species, visual artists represented animals either in humanized guises or in contexts of encounter with humans. Animal imagery was especially malleable during this period when science and pseudo-science both confronted the possibility that species were susceptible to gradual change over time rather than fixed in form since …

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin Jan 2009

Fear And Death In Plato, Emily Austin

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Plato argues that a perfectly virtuous individual will not fear her own death, nor will she fear or grieve the death of a loved one. In Plato's ideal society, citizens are taught not to fear death and are prohibited from public manifestations of grief. It is by no means self-evident, however, that ridding oneself of the fear of death, even if possible, is ethically or psychologically beneficial. This dissertation examines why Plato thinks that the fear of death is morally inappropriate, why he believes it is nevertheless difficult to overcome, and why he thinks acquiring and sustaining the appropriate attitudes …

Discovery Of Inactive E* Conformations In Thrombin And Other Vitamin K- Dependent Clotting Proteases, Alaji Bah Jan 2009

Discovery Of Inactive E* Conformations In Thrombin And Other Vitamin K- Dependent Clotting Proteases, Alaji Bah

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Serine proteases of the chymotrypsin family play important roles in the regulation and function of numerous biological processes including digestion, blood coagulation, fibrinolysis, development, fertilization, apoptosis and immunity. For many of these proteases, activity unfolds when a zymogen is activated by limited proteolysis and the associated conformational changes result in the formation of a proper active site and oxyanion hole, both of which are required for efficient hydrolysis of peptide bonds. The transition from zymogen to active enzyme, E, thus provides critical temporal and spatial regulatory mechanism of protease function. Catalytic activity of serine proteases belonging to Vitamin K-dependent clotting …
