The Politics Of Sectional Servitude : The Construction Of American Abolitionist Discourse In Black And White, 1837-1847, Christopher M. Florio Jan 2009

The Politics Of Sectional Servitude : The Construction Of American Abolitionist Discourse In Black And White, 1837-1847, Christopher M. Florio

Honors Theses

I argue that American political discourse surrounding abolition and slavery, sectional politics and violent insurrection, coalesced in the 1840s. The merger of such ostensibly disconnected streams of thought began with the perception of a new political need, as abolitionists came to believe that southern plantation elites had constructed a hegemonic proslavery order. Their interpretation of northern consent to southern domination impelled a proliferation of abolitionist possibilities, possibilities that were intended to sever the connection between national politics and the peculiar institution. Initially disseminated by freed blacks but subsequently appropriated by northern whites, these possibilities crossed the color line and challenged …

On The Record : The Visibility Of Race, Class, Gender, And Age In Richmond, Virginia's Newspaper Coverage Of 1960'S Sitdown Movement, Jill Eisenberg Jan 2009

On The Record : The Visibility Of Race, Class, Gender, And Age In Richmond, Virginia's Newspaper Coverage Of 1960'S Sitdown Movement, Jill Eisenberg

Honors Theses

This research project is an analysis of the representation of race, class, gender, and age in local newspapers during the early 1960 civil rights' sitdown movement in Richmond, Virginia. Political figures and heads of media were predominantly older, elite, white- and male-oriented and -dominated. Through studying both white Richmond and African American Richmond newspapers, this thesis explores how these interlocking and interdependent systems of oppression and privilege affected the portrayal of groups and individuals in the media. Gender, race, class, and age cannot be studied in isolation from one another when analyzing the Civil Rights Movement and newspapers as primary …

Empathy, Group-Level Guilt And Identification : Measuring Their Relationship Through Past American-Cambodian Relations, Laura Musser Jan 2009

Empathy, Group-Level Guilt And Identification : Measuring Their Relationship Through Past American-Cambodian Relations, Laura Musser

Honors Theses

A collective approach to emotions suggests that, in some cases, members of groups may experience collective guilt when they consider the negative actions performed by other members of their group, even when they were not personally involved themselves. Social identity theory suggests that such group-level reactions are more likely when individuals strongly identify with their group, and less likely when their sense of identity is not linked as strongly to their group membership.

This hypothesis was examined by directly manipulating the salience of individuals' collective identities through priming through an identification manipulation. The identification manipulation primed participants to feel more …

Political Socialization And The Youth Vote : A Study Of Political Engagement During The 2008 Election, Meredith Hull Jan 2009

Political Socialization And The Youth Vote : A Study Of Political Engagement During The 2008 Election, Meredith Hull

Honors Theses

I began my research on political socialization struck about the political apathy I was observing among my friends. Through studying those very same peers here at the University of Richmond in both a survey and interviews, I am even more determined to find ways to encourage high levels of knowledgeable engagement and volunteerism among college aged students. The United States will have to continue to compete in a global market in the future and citizens of other democracies understand and care enough to vote about the changes in that government-what is the problem here?

The results of the survey and …

Combining Remote Sensing Data And An Inundation Model To Map Tidal Mudflat Regions And Improve Flood Predictions: A Proof Of Concept Demonstration In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Tal Ezer, Hua Liu Jan 2009

Combining Remote Sensing Data And An Inundation Model To Map Tidal Mudflat Regions And Improve Flood Predictions: A Proof Of Concept Demonstration In Cook Inlet, Alaska, Tal Ezer, Hua Liu

CCPO Publications

Accurate flood predictions require high resolution inundation numerical models and detailed coastal and land topography data. However, such data are not always available. A new method to obtain topographic information of flood zones from remote sensing data is demonstrated here for Cook Inlet, Alaska, where tidal range reaches 8-10 m. The moving shoreline is detected from analysis of water coverage in satellite images taken at different tidal stages, and then the shoreline data from different times are combined with water level data from observations and models to produce new topographic maps of previously unobserved mudflats. The remote sensing-based analysis provides …

Variations In Sea Surface Roughness Induced By The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Tsunami, O. A. Godin, V. G. Irisov, R. R. Leben, B. D. Hamlington, G. A. Wick Jan 2009

Variations In Sea Surface Roughness Induced By The 2004 Sumatra-Andaman Tsunami, O. A. Godin, V. G. Irisov, R. R. Leben, B. D. Hamlington, G. A. Wick

CCPO Publications

Observations of tsunamis away from shore are critically important for improving early warning systems and understanding of tsunami generation and propagation. Tsunamis are difficult to detect and measure in the open ocean because the wave amplitude there is much smaller than it is close to shore. Currently, tsunami observations in deep water rely on measurements of variations in the sea surface height or bottom pressure. Here we demonstrate that there exists a different observable, specifically, ocean surface roughness, which can be used to reveal tsunamis away from shore. The first detailed measurements of the tsunami effect on sea surface height …

Profiles Of Ocean Surface Heating (Posh): A New Model Of Upper Ocean Diurnal Warming, Chelle L. Gentemann, Peter J. Minnett, Brian Ward Jan 2009

Profiles Of Ocean Surface Heating (Posh): A New Model Of Upper Ocean Diurnal Warming, Chelle L. Gentemann, Peter J. Minnett, Brian Ward

CCPO Publications

Shipboard radiometric measurements of diurnal warming at the ocean surface and profiles through the diurnal thermocline were utilized to assess the temporal and vertical variability and to develop a new physics-based model of near-surface warming. The measurements and modeled diurnal warming were compared, with the goal of comprehensively evaluating differences between the data and model results. On the basis of these results, the diurnal model was refined while attempting to maintain agreement with the measurements. Simplified bulk models commonly do not provide information on the vertical structure within the warm layer, but this new model predicts the vertical temperature profile …

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson Jan 2009

Local Employment, Poverty, And Property Value Effects Of Geographically-Targeted Tax Incentives: An Instrumental Variables Approach, Andrew R. Hanson

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

The federal Empowerment Zone (EZ) program is a set of tax incentives targeted to areas of select cities. I estimate the effect of the EZ program on employment, poverty, and property values by comparing areas that received an EZ to areas that applied (and qualified), but were rejected. Because of endogeneity concerns, I use political representation to instrument for EZ designation. OLS results show a positive and statistically significant effect of the program on employment and poverty. IV estimates suggest the program had no effect on employment and poverty, and instead had a large statistically significant effect on property values.

Competing Conceptions Of The Individual In Recent Economics, John B. Davis Jan 2009

Competing Conceptions Of The Individual In Recent Economics, John B. Davis

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This article characterizes the Homo economicus conception in terms of three linked properties that are central to it as an atomist conception. On the standard view, individuals: have exogenous preferences; interact only (or almost only) in an indirect manner with one another through the price mechanism; and are unaffected in these two respects by the aggregate effects of their interaction with one another. The new research programs differ in how objectionable they find each of these properties, as befits their different commitments to synchronic or diachronic forms of explanation. Furthermore, this article reviews the role of synchronic and diachronic types …

Committee Size And Smart Growth: An Optimal Solution, Russell Kashian, Heather Kohls Jan 2009

Committee Size And Smart Growth: An Optimal Solution, Russell Kashian, Heather Kohls

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

Wisconsin is one of many states that have enacted a “Smart Growth Initiative” law that requires inclusion of the public in the creation and development of a Comprehensive Plan. One implication of public participation is the strategic development of a comprehensive planning committee. Two crucial decisions occur when the committee is formed: the size of the committee and the composition of the committee. This paper models a relation between committee size and the accuracy of plan, as well as the relationship between the inclusion of experts, whether paid consultants or planners, and the quality of the outcome. Based on a …

Energy From The Skies: Empowering Future Generations, Petros J. Katsioloudis, Stella Bondi, Walter F. Deal

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article discusses the development of photovoltaic technology. The first account of the use of solar power during war in western civilization was in the second century B.C. during the battle of Syracuse with Archimedes' famed Death Ray. In the late 1800s and early 1900s many advances occurred including the invention of solar-powered engines, the discovery of the photoconductivity of selenium and its ability to produce electricity when exposed to light, and the construction of the first solar cells from selenium wafers. Photovoltaic technology was born in the U.S. in 1954 when Daryl Chapin, Calvin Fuller, and Gerald Pearson developed …

Water Treatment: Keeping It Pure, Petros Katsioloudis Jan 2009

Water Treatment: Keeping It Pure, Petros Katsioloudis

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article discusses the importance of water treatment in providing quality and safe drinking water. A historical background of the U.S. federal regulation of drinking water quality is presented. It was found by the Public Health Service in 1969 that only 60 percent of the systems surveyed delivered water that met all the Public Health Service standards. Filtration and chlorination are also cited as an effective treatment techniques for protecting U.S. water supplies from harmful microbes. An overview of the process of water treatment is presented.

Workplace Discrimination And Learning Disability: The National Eeoc Ada Research Project, Joseph Conway Jan 2009

Workplace Discrimination And Learning Disability: The National Eeoc Ada Research Project, Joseph Conway

Theses and Dissertations

Using the Integrated Mission System of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the employment discrimination experience of Americans with Learning Disabilities (SLD) is documented for Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The study examines demographic characteristics of the charging parties and the industry of the responding employer against whom complaints are filed. It establishes the nature of the discriminatory act, specifically, pin-points the issue(s) that predicated the allegation, and shows the final outcome or resolution of these complaints. Key dimensions of workplace discrimination as experienced by individuals with LD are detected using two Tests of Proportion. The first …

Fred Vargas: Les Echos D'Autres Mondes., Carol Kristine Masinter Jan 2009

Fred Vargas: Les Echos D'Autres Mondes., Carol Kristine Masinter

Master's Theses

Fred Vargas, author of detective novels that have in recent years garnered critical praise and public enthusiasm, transcends the limitations of the genre of detective fiction. In relation to other notable authors in the genre, Vargas is exceptional. Vargas' principal protagonist, Adamsberg, is complex and multifaceted, and the novels contain multiple layers of meaning, including the symbolism of the four elements, and direct or indirect references to the Homeric epics, popular legends and folklore, fairy tales, and medieval literature. Adamsberg can be compared to the archetypal hero, as defined by Joseph Campbell. Fred Vargas is not only a novelist, but …

Avini's City: "Shahri Dar Aasemaan"., Mehrzad Karimabadi

Master's Theses

This thesis examines the documentary Shahri dar Aasemaan (i.e. A City in the Sky) by the late filmmaker Sayyed Morteza Avini's in order to establish its key elements and argue for Avini as an auteur with a unique cinematic style that includes strong personal and ideological ties. Shahri dar Aasemaan, which was Avini's last documentary, covers the initial forty-five-day battle leading to the Iraqi occupation of the Iranian city of Khorramshahr when the Iran-Iraq war broke out in October of 1980. In order to better comprehend Avini as an auteur and his work, this study begins with a brief introduction …

From Corporate Social Responsibility To Corporate Responsible Behaviour: A Futures Approach: Proposing A New Conceptual And Operational Framework To Foster Responsibility Within The Commercial Property Industry, Gillian O'Brien

Doctoral

This research examines corporate responsible behaviour (CRB) and the role of Futures Studies, as both a philosophy and a critical research methodology in fostering a culture of responsibility within the commercial property industry in the UK. More specific objectives are to critically evaluate CRB and its role in business; to explore the potential role, effects and implications of futures in the development of CRB policy and practice; to propose an integrative conceptual and operational framework for guiding the commercial property industry in formulating systematic, executable CRB policies and practices; and to build a set of propositions that may influence the …

Wikitruth Through Wikiorder, David A. Hoffman, Salil K. Mehra Jan 2009

Wikitruth Through Wikiorder, David A. Hoffman, Salil K. Mehra

Emory Law Journal

How does large-scale social production coordinate individual behavior to produce public goods? In 1968, Hardin denied that the creation of public goods absent markets or the State is possible. Benkler, Shirky, Zittrain, and Lessig recently countered that the necessary coordination might emerge though social norms. However, scholars have not fully explained how this coordination is to occur. Game theorists have modeled large-scale social production as a solution to the herder problem/multi-player Prisoner¿s Dilemma. But we demonstrate that the ¿weeding in function reflects dynamics more accurately captured in coordination games. In this way, dispute resolution can provide a constitutive function for …

Scaling Waller: How Courts Have Eroded The Sixth Amendment Public Trial Right, Daniel Levitas Jan 2009

Scaling Waller: How Courts Have Eroded The Sixth Amendment Public Trial Right, Daniel Levitas

Emory Law Journal

American courts and legal commentators have long praised the Sixth Amendment public trial right, but courts often lack the willingness to enforce it. Although the Supreme Court has consistently held that violations of the public trial right belong to an exceedingly small class of constitutional errors requiring reversal, appellate courts persist in upholding improper courtroom closures even when the record shows that courts below have violated the applicable constitutional standard. When criminal trials are fatally fouled by structural, constitutional error of this kind, the reluctance of appellate courts to reverse is damaging in two ways¿it encourages repetition of the same …

Preparing For Climate Change: Recognising Early Impacts Through Perceptions Of Dive Tourists And Dive Operators In The Egyptian Red Sea, N. A. Marshall, P. A. Marshall, A. Abdulla, A. Rouphael, A. Ali Jan 2009

Preparing For Climate Change: Recognising Early Impacts Through Perceptions Of Dive Tourists And Dive Operators In The Egyptian Red Sea, N. A. Marshall, P. A. Marshall, A. Abdulla, A. Rouphael, A. Ali

Egypt & Libya

Tourism generates important economic activity globally and is a major source of foreign exchange income in many countries. Yet, climate change has the potential to permanently alter the attraction and value of many tourism destinations and substantially impact the income streams and social benefits derived from tourism. These impacts can be minimised if tourism operators, sectors and tourismdependent communities understand their vulnerability to climate change, and take steps to adapt to predicted changes. Some of the more immediate and manageable changes are likely to result from changes in awareness and attitudes among tourists, and these factors are major drivers of …

Essay: Telling Stories Of Shareholder Supremacy, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 2009

Essay: Telling Stories Of Shareholder Supremacy, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

At its core, corporate law, like most law, is a morality play. Its internal structure is not determined by logic, justice, or efficiency. Instead, doctrine and action alike flow from a highly contested argument over status and position. Holmes had it partly right: "[t]he life of the law has not been logic." But it has not "been experience," a non-reflective naive pragmatism or a mere superstructure passively reflecting underlying class struggle, either. The law is a conflict of narratives. The stories it tells have independent power that can influence, as well as be influenced by, the struggles that create it …

Climate Change Adaptation In The Water Sector In The Middle East And North Africa: A Review Of Main Issues, Gael Gregoire Jan 2009

Climate Change Adaptation In The Water Sector In The Middle East And North Africa: A Review Of Main Issues, Gael Gregoire

Egypt & Libya

Fresh water is a vital, finite2 and vulnerable resource. In many countries of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region3, fresh water stress and shortages are becoming a serious threat to economic growth, social cohesion and political stability. Fresh water, which is being used in an uncontrolled and unsustainable fashion, is unfortunately not planned on the basis of its present and future availability but rather is based on sectoral and geographical competing consumption needs. This will increasingly penalize certain economic activities and services, which will in turn disproportionately affect the poor. Moreover, despite important strides in curbing demographic growth …
