Germinal Center Reutilization By Newly Activated B Cells., Tanja A Schwickert, Boris Alabyev, Tim Manser, Michel C Nussenzweig

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Germinal centers (GCs) are specialized structures in which B lymphocytes undergo clonal expansion, class switch recombination, somatic hypermutation, and affinity maturation. Although these structures were previously thought to contain a limited number of isolated B cell clones, recent in vivo imaging studies revealed that they are in fact dynamic and appear to be open to their environment. We demonstrate that B cells can colonize heterologous GCs. Invasion of primary GCs after subsequent immunization is most efficient when T cell help is shared by the two immune responses; however, it also occurs when the immune responses are entirely unrelated. We conclude …

Considering "Objective" Possibilities In Autoethnography: A Critique Of Heewon Chang’S Autoethnography As Method1, Sue Butler Dec 2009

Considering "Objective" Possibilities In Autoethnography: A Critique Of Heewon Chang’S Autoethnography As Method1, Sue Butler

The Qualitative Report

Autoethnography is a qualitative research methodology that emphasizes a more personal, almost intimate level of study. It renders the researcher-participant opportunities to explore past and present experiences while gaining self-awareness of his or her interactions and their socio-cultural effects. In the book Autoethnography as Method Heewon Chang presents this research methodology in an easy to follow text and illustration, while advocating an objective approach to data collection and analysis. However, Chang’s theoretical positions seem to shift back and forth between this objective point-of-view and a subjective perspective throughout the text causing ambiguity and contradiction of ideas and approaches.

The Executive Pay Drama: From Comedy To Tragedy, David J. Cherrington Dec 2009

The Executive Pay Drama: From Comedy To Tragedy, David J. Cherrington

Faculty Publications

Over the past century, an interesting play has been performed in the United States called Executive Pay, Starring Your Local CEO. The play opened as a comedy, with executive bonuses and stock options rising at ridiculous rates compared to the pay of factory workers, teachers, and engineers. The performance didn’t get a lot of laughs, but people would smile and shake their heads as if the surprise of ever-escalating pay was an amusing disclosure. During economic downturns there were fewer smiles, and some outspoken critics were remarkably blunt in labeling executive pay practices as “enormous,” “immoral,” and “outrageous.” The title …

Thermal And Mechanical Multistate Folding Of Rnase H, Thomas A. Knotts, Terry J. Schmitt, Jonathan E. Clark Dec 2009

Thermal And Mechanical Multistate Folding Of Rnase H, Thomas A. Knotts, Terry J. Schmitt, Jonathan E. Clark

Faculty Publications

Two different classes of experimental techniques exist by which protein folding mechanisms are ascertained. The first class, of which circular dichroism is an example, probes thermally-induced folding. The second class, which includes atomic force microscopy and optical tweezers, measures mechanically-induced folding. In this article, we investigate if proteins fold/unfold via the same mechanisms both thermally and mechanically. We do so using Ribonuclease H, a protein that has been shown to fold through a three-state mechanism using both types of experimental techniques. A detailed, molecular-level description of the states involved in thermal and mechanical folding shows that mechanisms for both types …

Finance & Facilities Fy10 Budget Rescission, Office Of The President

President Schmidly's Administration

The Recent Past As most of you know by now, confirmation hearings were held last Monday in Santa Fe for Governor Richardsons three nominees for UNM's Board of Regents. The confirmation process was carried out according to the Constitution of the State of New Mexico and resulted in all three of these individuals — Gene Gallegos, Jamie Koch, and Cate Wisdom — being confirmed by the Senate. As part of the process, several faculty, students, and staff participated in the hearings. There was a lot of passionate discussion, both pro and con, and I want to commend and thank everyone …

Ecotourism As An Alternative To Fishing In Yucatan, Mexico, Abigail E. Bennett Dec 2009

Ecotourism As An Alternative To Fishing In Yucatan, Mexico, Abigail E. Bennett

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

Small-scale fisheries account for a vast majority of fisheries globally. Their overexploitation threatens coastal environments, including the people living there, throughout the world (Basurto, 2008). Finding productive alternatives to unsustainable levels of fishing is a necessary part of curbing this probl em. Ecotourism has offered such an alternative to coastal communities, and there are already some successful examples of community-managed ecotourism groups in Mexico. Beyond providing a source of income for community members, these programs also facilitate environmental education, thus fostering local community involvement in conservation goals. This study focuses on ecotourism programs that have been started in three towns …

Catholic Student Protest And Campus Change At Loyola University In New Orleans, 1964-1971, Robert Lorenz Dec 2009

Catholic Student Protest And Campus Change At Loyola University In New Orleans, 1964-1971, Robert Lorenz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the development of the student protest movement at Loyola University New Orleans from1964 to 1971. It focuses on student protests against racial discrimination and the Vietnam War, student agitation for greater freedom on campus, and battles that Loyola's faculty had with the university administration. This study argues that Loyola's student protesters were acting as Catholics against situations they believed were immoral and unjust. In this sense, they were ahead of the Jesuit clergy at Loyola, who took action only after student protest on those issues. Indeed, student protest filled a void of moral leadership that the Jesuit …

A Qualitative Study Of The Personal Reactions And Experiences Of Adolescent Students Who Have Been Retained, Jessica Fournier Dec 2009

A Qualitative Study Of The Personal Reactions And Experiences Of Adolescent Students Who Have Been Retained, Jessica Fournier

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Grade retention is an educational practice that requires students to repeat the grade level they have just completed (Jimerson, 2001). In the United States, an estimated 15% to 19% of students are retained each year (Holmes, 2006). Previous research on grade retention is comprised of quantitative studies describing students who have been retained as having higher suspension rates, coming from a low socio-economic status, and having an increased chance of dropping out of school (Christle, Jolivette, & Nelson, 2007; Janosz, et al., 1997; Jimerson & Ferguson, 2007; Jimerson et al., 2002; Suh & Suh 2007). While these studies provide a …

This study provides a brief history of adult education in the United States as well as the study context, a continuing studies division of a privately endowed research institution located in the southern United States. The participants in this study were nontraditional students who were also recent graduates of …

The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham Dec 2009

The Perspectives Of First-Year Principals Regarding Their Experiences With Mentors And The Mentoring Process Within The Louisiana Educational Leaders Induction (Leli) Program, Sabrah Helms Kingham

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Are new school administrators prepared for the surprises, obstacles, and opportunities they are likely to encounter during the first-year in their new role? Sadly enough, too many new leaders do not feel prepared to meet the challenges of their new role as an administrator. In 2006, the National Center for Education Statistics (2006) reported that there were 95,726 administrators in the U. S. Within this pool of administrators, approximately 127 were new hires in the state of Louisiana (LDE, 2006). In an effort to find ways to support, guide, and retain new principals, the Louisiana Educational Leaders Network, under the …

Evaluation Of The Genetic Management Of The Endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jessica Renee Henkel Dec 2009

Evaluation Of The Genetic Management Of The Endangered Mississippi Sandhill Crane (Grus Canadensis Pulla), Jessica Renee Henkel

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The genetic status of the critically endangered Mississippi sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pulla) was analyzed using 2009 studbook data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service managed captive breeding and release program. Microsatellite DNA data provided information on shared founder genotypes, allowing for refined analysis of genetic variation in the population, and informed breeding recommendations. The genetic variation observed in the Mississippi sandhill crane was contrasted with variation observed in the Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis). Results show far less variation in the Mississippi population. Results also suggest that while gene flow no longer occurs between the two populations, …

Moving Away From Home: A Map Of Classroom Burnout, Mary Marwitz Dec 2009

Moving Away From Home: A Map Of Classroom Burnout, Mary Marwitz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this series of essays about professional burnout, a veteran teacher seeks a way to continue her work and enthusiasm in it, for the sake of both her and her students. To that end, she explores her relationships with her father and mother, and how the practices of teaching and learning she brought from home have affected her present classroom experiences. A complicating factor is the presence of chronic illness and its demands both primary and secondary: her father's Alzheimer's, her mother's bi-polar disorder, and the demands of eldercare for her mother. She also explores her own habitual practice of …

Electro-Disinfection Of Ballast Water, Elizabeth Kathleen Mccraven Dec 2009

Electro-Disinfection Of Ballast Water, Elizabeth Kathleen Mccraven

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This research validates electro-disinfection as a potential secondary ballast water treatment technology. Electricity applied to bacteria laden water produced bactericidal effects, reactive oxygen species and chlorine generation which annihilated bacteria. Evaluation of electro-disinfection experiments showed titanium electrodes had the maximum kill efficacy while disinfection with aluminum and stainless steel electrodes had lesser kill efficacy. A continuous flow electro-disinfection reactor was evaluated utilizing artificial brackish and fresh ballast water. Brackish water had a 100% bacteria kill efficiency utilizing titanium electrodes at a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Fresh water was augmented with the addition of salt to increase its electrical conductivity …
