Biological Sciences Collection Development Policy, Jacquelyn Petzold

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

The biological sciences collection exists to support the teaching, research, and service functions of the School of Biological Sciences and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln community. The public may benefit from the biological sciences collection, although specific materials are not collected to meet their needs. Biology-related materials not available in the library’s collection are generally readily available through Interlibrary Loan. The collection is focused on the biologically-based subsections of the Q Library of Congress call number range, although the heavily interdisciplinary nature of scientific study necessitates some overlap with R, S, T, and other areas.

Coping Methods And Meaning Making Of Liberian Refugees In The Buduburam Refugee Camp Of Ghana, Abena Gyamfuah Sarfo-Mensah Dec 2009

Coping Methods And Meaning Making Of Liberian Refugees In The Buduburam Refugee Camp Of Ghana, Abena Gyamfuah Sarfo-Mensah

Honors Scholar Theses

The mental health of war-impacted individuals has been an issue of growing concern to many researchers and practitioners internationally (Miller, Kulkarni, & Kushner, 2006). According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (2006a), Africans are disproportionately impacted by conflict-related displacement. To date, however, much of the research on the mental health of refugees has been based mostly on Western views of health and trauma. The current study is a mixed-methods investigation of stressors, coping strategies, and meaning making of Liberian refugees in the Buduburam Refugee Camp of Ghana. Results from the Brief COPE, focus groups, and semi-structured ethnographic interviews …

Ludwig Van Beethoven's Orchestration Of The Trombone, Daniel R. Cloutier Dec 2009

Ludwig Van Beethoven's Orchestration Of The Trombone, Daniel R. Cloutier

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Ludwig Van Beethoven is considered one of the first composers to fully realize the wide-ranging performance potential of the trombone. Although the instrument had already been scored in sacred and operatic works by major composers (and symphonies by lesser-known composers), it was Beethoven who was considered to be the first to truly emancipate the trombone from its sacred and operatic boundaries and write for it in various secular, choral, and even chamber music genres. In this paper, every composition of Beethoven's that includes trombones is examined. The historical context of each individual work will be established, along with any general …

To Trust Or Not To Trust? Predicting Online Trusts Using Trust Antecedent Framework, Viet-An Nguyen, Ee Peng Lim, Jing Jiang, Aixin Sun Dec 2009

To Trust Or Not To Trust? Predicting Online Trusts Using Trust Antecedent Framework, Viet-An Nguyen, Ee Peng Lim, Jing Jiang, Aixin Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper analyzes the trustor and trustee factors that lead to inter-personal trust using a well studied Trust Antecedent framework in management science. To apply these factors to trust ranking problem in online rating systems, we derive features that correspond to each factor and develop different trust ranking models. The advantage of this approach is that features relevant to trust can be systematically derived so as to achieve good prediction accuracy. Through a series of experiments on real data from Epinions, we show that even a simple model using the derived features yields good accuracy and outperforms MoleTrust, a trust …

On The Untraceability Of Anonymous Rfid Authentication Protocol With Constant Key-Lookup, Bing Liang, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng Dec 2009

On The Untraceability Of Anonymous Rfid Authentication Protocol With Constant Key-Lookup, Bing Liang, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In ASIACCS'08, Burmester, Medeiros and Motta proposed an anonymous RFID authentication protocol (BMM protocol [2]) that preserves the security and privacy properties, and achieves better scalability compared with other contemporary approaches. We analyze BMM protocol and find that some of security properties (especial untraceability) are not fulfilled as originally claimed. We consider a subtle attack, in which an adversary can manipulate the messages transmitted between a tag and a reader for several continuous protocol runs, and can successfully trace the tag after these interactions. Our attack works under a weak adversary model, in which an adversary can eavesdrop, intercept and …

Insights Into Malware Detection And Prevention On Mobile Phones, Qiang Yan, Yingjiu Li, Tieyan Li, Robert H. Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The malware threat for mobile phones is expected to increase with the functionality enhancement of mobile phones. This threat is exacerbated with the surge in population of smart phones instilled with stable Internet access which provides attractive targets for malware developers. Prior research on malware protection has focused on avoiding the negative impact of the functionality limitations of mobile phones to keep the performance cost within the limitations of mobile phones. Being different, this paper investigates the positive impact of these limitations on suppressing the development of mobile malware. We study the state-of-the-art mobile malware, as well as the progress …

Computationally Secure Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao Dec 2009

Computationally Secure Hierarchical Self-Healing Key Distribution For Heterogeneous Wireless Sensor Networks, Yanjiang Yang, Jianying Zhou, Robert H. Deng, Feng Bao

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Self-healing group key distribution is a primitive aimed to achieve robust key distribution in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) over lossy communication channels. However, all the existing self-healing group key distribution schemes in the literature are designed for homogenous WSNs that do not scale. In contract, heterogeneous WSNs have better scalability and performance. We are thus motivated to study self-healing group key distribution for heterogeneous WSNs. In particular, we propose the concept of hierarchical self-healing group key distribution, tailored to the heterogeneous WSN architecture; we further revisit and adapt Dutta et al.’s model to the setting of hierarchical self-healing group …

Live Load Models For Long Span Bridges, Marta Lutomirska Dec 2009

Live Load Models For Long Span Bridges, Marta Lutomirska

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In the doctoral dissertation a live load model for long span structures was derived. The live load model is valid for spans between 600 ft and 5000 ft and it is intended to reflect current traffic patterns, quantities of trucks and their weights. The live load models available were developed for short and medium span bridges. Those models were not appropriate for long span bridges due to different types of structure and critical traffic patterns. Live load on long spans depends on traffic mix. One heavily overloaded truck does not have significant influence. Moreover, the continuous increase in the number …

Understanding Folk Dance And Gypsy Style In Selected Pieces For Clarinet And Piano By 20th Century Hungarian Composers: An Interpretive Guide, Jessica Vansteenburg Dec 2009

Understanding Folk Dance And Gypsy Style In Selected Pieces For Clarinet And Piano By 20th Century Hungarian Composers: An Interpretive Guide, Jessica Vansteenburg

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Hungary has a long and rich history of folk music and dance. The clarinet has played a part in this history and remains a popular instrument in the country. Clarinet is most often associated with the verbunkos and is a regular member of the Gypsy band. The desire for composers of art music to compose in the folk tradition grew out of Hungarian nationalism in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century partly due to political pressures and the value of tradition in Hungarian music education.
Following a historical overview of the folk music and dance tradition in …

Detection And Measurement Of Water Stress In Vegetation Using Visible Spectrum Reflectance, Arthur Zygielbaum Dec 2009

Detection And Measurement Of Water Stress In Vegetation Using Visible Spectrum Reflectance, Arthur Zygielbaum

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

At any scale, from a single microbe to the planet that nurtures us, water defines our place in the universe. It provides the hydraulic forces needed to give plants structure, and the medium enabling photosynthesis, the basis for most life on Earth, to occur. Knowledge of plant water status is vital to understanding the state or condition of vegetation, information which is essential to disciplines as diverse as agriculture, geography, and climatology. Non-destructive and remote sensing of plant water status allows the gathering of such information across wide geographic extents and over long periods of time. Monitoring vegetation remotely requires …

Wake Up Or Fall Asleep: Value Implication Of Trusted Computing, Nan Hu, Jianhui Huang, Ling Liu, Yingjiu Li, Dan Ma Dec 2009

Wake Up Or Fall Asleep: Value Implication Of Trusted Computing, Nan Hu, Jianhui Huang, Ling Liu, Yingjiu Li, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

More than 10 years have passed since trusted computing (TC) technology was introduced to the market; however, there is still no consensus about its value. The increasing importance of user and enterprise security and the security promised by TC, coupled with the increasing tension between the proponents and the opponents of TC, make it timely to investigate the value relevance of TC in terms of both capital market and accounting performance. Based on both price and volume studies, we found that news releases related to the adoption of the TC technology had no information content. All investors, regardless of whether …

Demosprudence, Interactive Federalism, And Twenty Years Of Sheff V. O'Neill, Justin R. Long Dec 2009

Demosprudence, Interactive Federalism, And Twenty Years Of Sheff V. O'Neill, Justin R. Long

Law Faculty Research Publications

Professor Lani Guinier and others have recently developed a theory called "demosprudence" that explains the democracy-enhancing potential of certain types of US. Supreme Court dissents. Separately, state constitutionalists have described state constitutions' capacity to offer a base of resistance against the U.S. Supreme Court's narrow conception of individual rights. Applying these two seemingly unrelated theories to school desegregation litigation in Connecticut and to same-sex marriage litigation in Iowa, this Essay suggests that certain state constitutional decisions might function like U.S. Supreme Court dissents to enhance democratic activism. In this way, interactive federalism might usefully serve as a category of demosprudence.

Board Level Strategic Decision-Making: Process Characteristics And Context, Bernard C. Bailey Dec 2009

Board Level Strategic Decision-Making: Process Characteristics And Context, Bernard C. Bailey

Student Scholarship

How do boards make strategic decisions? Semi-structured interviews with twenty eight directors of small to medium size publicly traded U.S. companies in the high technology sector were conducted in order to gain insights into strategic decision-making at the board level. We identified six characteristics that distinguish two divergent views about strategic decision-making. These characteristics include the role of the board chair, the boardroom climate, the board's shared vision and goals, the board's agency primacy, the board's process for decision closure and the board's level of involvement in the strategic planning process.

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn Dec 2009

Administrative Law, Martin M. Wilson, Jennifer A. Blackburn

Mercer Law Review

Administrative procedure is rarely the topic of after-hours conversations, trailing far behind baseball scores, what to eat, and famous personalities. However, the continuing creep of influence of administrative agencies impacts daily life far beyond casual observations. It is the work of administrative agencies that propels government on all fronts. This Article surveys chosen cases from the Georgia Supreme Court and the Georgia Court of Appeals from June 1, 2008 through May 31, 2009. Cases from specific subject areas that one would expect to see in other articles contained in this volume have not been included unless points regarding administrative law …

Criminal Law, Franklin J. Hogue

Mercer Law Review

This year I selected a small number of significant cases and amendments to Georgia criminal law on which to focus this Survey. This allows slightly more in-depth treatment within the space limitations and may be more useful, so I hope, to practicing trial lawyers in the ever-changing area of criminal law. This survey period covers developments from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009.
