Sustainability In Practice: A Study Of The Sustainable Behaviors Of Students At The Univeristy Of Tennessee At Chattanooga, Audrey Glor
Honors Theses
Sustainable behaviors, such as recycling, are increasingly important as the world's population continues to rise. While many attempts have been made at various institutions, recycling on a grand scale has yet to become a social reality. This study was designed to look at the three broad factors influencing an individual's recycling behavior: social pressure, knowledge base, and convenience. It was hypothesized that social pressure would have the greatest influence on an individual's recycling behavior, while not overlooking the importance of the other two factors. A questionnaire was employed to collect data from a sample population at the University of Tennessee …
A New Method For Job Evaluation, Wiktor Adamus
A New Method For Job Evaluation, Wiktor Adamus
European Management Studies
The paper aims to develop a new method to measure and assess qualitative parameters of a job in a simple, transparent, universal and timeless way. When evaluating a given feature, factor, object or subject, we weigh various quality and quantity criteria relative to the accepted pattern or value in a given organization, society or culture. When building a system of job evaluation in the organization, seven synthetic criteria were considered: knowledge, experience, wisdom, psychological and physical effort, intellectual effort, responsibility and cooperation. Each synthetic criterion was assigned a handful of analytical criteria, which in turn were assigned a verbal, adjective …
Visualizing Data, Visualizing Models: Getting Priorities Right When Analyzing Data, Alex Chavez, Richard Gonzalez
Visualizing Data, Visualizing Models: Getting Priorities Right When Analyzing Data, Alex Chavez, Richard Gonzalez
European Management Studies
We discuss methods of visualizing data and statistical models. The key innovation of these methods is that specialized graphs simultaneously illustrate underlying patterns in data and the properties of the statistical model that are used to analyze the data. These visualization techniques provide ways of understanding the relation between variables, illustrate how the statistical model works and can reveal how the statistical model may not be capturing underlying patterns among the variables.
Limitations Of K-Means Cluster Analysis In Creating Typologies, Jerzy Wierzbiński
Limitations Of K-Means Cluster Analysis In Creating Typologies, Jerzy Wierzbiński
European Management Studies
The ease with which one can use computer program to conduct complex data analysis is not, unfortunately, coupled with the researchers' comprehension of the nature of the analyses being conducted. The aim of the article is to show the limitations of k-means cluster analysis, commonly used in market research to partition the consumers into segments, in psychology to detect individual differences, in cross-cultural research to categorize countries. The limitations of this method has been illustrated with the Author's own analyses of religiosity level in 32 countries based on the data collected by International Social Survey Program (ISSP). It was shown …

Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black
Involving Youth In Community Emergency Preparedness: Impacts Of A Multistate Initiative, Pamela Powell, Marilyn Smith, Lynette Black
Journal of Youth Development
The National Preparedness Guidelines (2007) state, “as uniformed responders account for less than 1% of the total U.S. population, it is clear that citizens must be better prepared, trained, and practiced on how best to take care of themselves and assist others in those first crucial hours during and after a catastrophic incident.” This is increasingly more evident due to recent disasters such as hurricane Katrina. The Alert, Evacuate and Shelter (AES) program identified and trained youth/adult teams to use geospatial technology to map shelter locations and evacuation routes. Training began with team building activities to strengthen and build youth/adult …

Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown
Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown
Sentience Collection
Cerebral lateralization refers to the division of information processing in either hemisphere of the brain and is a ubiquitous trait among vertebrates and invertebrates. Given its widespread occurrence, it is likely that cerebral lateralization confers a fitness advantage. It has been hypothesized that this advantage takes the form of enhanced cognitive function, potentially via a dual processing mechanism whereby each hemisphere can be used to process specific types of information without contralateral interference. Here, we examined the influence of lateralization on problem solving by Australian parrots. The first task, a pebble-seed discrimination test, was designed for small parrot species that …

Exploring The Influence Of Multigenerational Transmission Process Among Nonresidential African American Fathers, A'Ndrea J. Wilson
Exploring The Influence Of Multigenerational Transmission Process Among Nonresidential African American Fathers, A'Ndrea J. Wilson
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
With a disproportionate percentage of black children growing up in fatherless homes in the U.S. and an increasing concern over the state of fatherhood nationally, investigation of fathering in the African American community is essential. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of nonresidential African American fathers and how their parenting beliefs and behaviors have been transmitted to them from their fathers and grandfathers. The theoretical framework of the study included the Responsible Fathering Conceptual Model and Family Systems Theory. Through qualitative, exploratory research methodology, the perceptions of African American fathers who do not reside in the …
Neophyte Qualitative Researcher Finding His Voice Through Qualitative Journeys, Matthew K. Robison
Neophyte Qualitative Researcher Finding His Voice Through Qualitative Journeys, Matthew K. Robison
The Qualitative Report
If you are looking for a book written about the qualitative research experience, you can find it in Victor Minichiello and Jeffery A. Kottler’s (2010c) edited volume Qualitative Journeys: Student and Mentor Experiences with Research. For a neophyte qualitative researcher who is finding his voice as a budding qualitative scholar, this book serves as an inspiration. This easy-to-read book gives a firsthand look at what other new, and oftentimes struggling, qualitative researchers experienced as they began their research journeys. Overall, the book builds a sense of excitement and interest in the qualitative paradigm; and, after reading it, I am energized …

Fused Visible And Infrared Video For Use In Wilderness Search And Rescue, Dennis Eggett, Michael A. Goodrich, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan Rasmussen
Fused Visible And Infrared Video For Use In Wilderness Search And Rescue, Dennis Eggett, Michael A. Goodrich, Bryan S. Morse, Nathan Rasmussen
Faculty Publications
Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (mUAVs) have the potential to assist Wilderness Search and Rescue groups by providing a bird’s eye view of the search area. This paper proposes a method for augmenting visible-spectrum searching with infrared sensing in order to make use of thermal search clues. It details a method for combining the color and heat information from these two modalities into a single fused display to reduce needed screen space for remote field use. To align the video frames for fusion, a method for simultaneously pre-calibrating the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the cameras and their mount using a …
