Seeing The Forest Through The Trees: A Review Of Gibson And Brown’S Working With Qualitative Data, Jacquelyn Browne

The Qualitative Report

In their 2008 book, Working with Qualitative Data, Gibson and Brown introduce their readers to the notion that qualitative data analysis is more of an on-going process integral to the overall qualitative research process than a set of techniques or tools. In making this assertion, the authors help their audience connect analysis with theory, design, and final qualitative research report

Mindfulness Training And Stress Reactivity In Substance Abuse: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study, Justin Albert Chen Sep 2009

Mindfulness Training And Stress Reactivity In Substance Abuse: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study, Justin Albert Chen

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

MINDFULNESS TRAINING AND STRESS REACTIVITY IN SUBSTANCE ABUSE: A RANDOMIZED, CONTROLLED PILOT STUDY. Justin A. Chen, Judson A. Brewer. Department of Psychiatry, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. There is substantial evidence for the central role of stress in the inception and maintenance of substance use disorders. The use of mindfulness training (MT) has demonstrated promise in a number of stress-related conditions. However, no studies to date have compared MT to empirically validated treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for substance use disorders or assessed its impact on response to stress provocation. The specific aim of this …

Parental Effects On Academic Achievement, Gregory A. Chubb Sep 2009

Parental Effects On Academic Achievement, Gregory A. Chubb

Theses and Graduate Projects

Prior studies have shown differing opinions on whether factors such as the makeup of the family or the level of a parent's education have an effect on academic achievement of a student. This study looks at students at a small K-8 inner city school in Minneapolis to see exactly what aspects of parenting indeed have an effect on a student's academic achievement. Through the use of qualitative research it was found that high levels of parent-teacher communication and high expectations for both level of education and performance in school give the student the best chance of experiencing academic success. Strategies …

Perpetration Of Gross Human Rights Violations In South Africa: Association With Psychiatric Disorders, Dan J. Stein, Stacey L. Williams, Pamela B. Jackson, Soraya Seedat, Landon Myer, Allen Herman, David R. Williams Sep 2009

Perpetration Of Gross Human Rights Violations In South Africa: Association With Psychiatric Disorders, Dan J. Stein, Stacey L. Williams, Pamela B. Jackson, Soraya Seedat, Landon Myer, Allen Herman, David R. Williams

ETSU Faculty Works

Background. A nationally representative study of psychiatric disorders in South Africa provided an opportunity to study the association between perpetration of human rights violations (HRVs) during apartheid and psychiatric disorder. Prior work has suggested an association between perpetration and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but this remains controversial. Methods. Subjects reported on their perpetration of human rights violations, purposeful injury, accidental injury and domestic violence. Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 4th edition) disorders were assessed with Version 3.0 of the World Health Organization Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI 3.0). Socio-demographic characteristics of these groups were calculated. …

Math And Me [9th Grade], Mckinley Rich Sep 2009

Math And Me [9th Grade], Mckinley Rich

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection

The purpose of this unit is to have students question and analyze their opinions about mathematics. Students, particularly in math, have very strong perceptions of themselves as a learner. These self-perceptions have many different roots, and in this unit students will analyze the origin and perpetuation of such perceptions. Through a series of articles and some moments of self-reflection, students will look for answers to the questions: “What perceptions do I have about math?” and “What has shaped and will continue to shape my perceptions about math?”. While this is unlike 99% of math units, I believe that in order …

The Big Lift: Federal Policy Efforts To Create Child Development Accounts (Cdas), Reid Cramer Sep 2009

The Big Lift: Federal Policy Efforts To Create Child Development Accounts (Cdas), Reid Cramer

Center for Social Development Research

Children’s accounts have been proposed as a means for creating an inclusive and accessible system for asset building throughout the life course. The idea gained traction in multiple settings, leading to a series of policies and demonstration projects across the globe. In the United Kingdom, the policy was adopted in the form of the Child Trust Fund program which began in 2005. a privately-funded project called the SEED Demonstration was launched in the United States in 2003. During this period a number of different children’s savings account policy proposals have been made at the federal level in the United States. …

Child Development Accounts And Saving For Children's Future: Do Financial Incentives Matter?, Lisa Reyes Mason, Yunju Nam, Margaret Clancy, Youngmi Kim, Vernon Loke Sep 2009

Child Development Accounts And Saving For Children's Future: Do Financial Incentives Matter?, Lisa Reyes Mason, Yunju Nam, Margaret Clancy, Youngmi Kim, Vernon Loke

Center for Social Development Research

This study examines savings outcomes in the first large-scale demonstration of Child Development Accounts (CDAs) in the United States—the Saving for Education, Entrepreneurship, and Downpayment (SEED) initiative. It is also the first empirical study, to our knowledge, to investigate associations between savings outcomes and incentives in an asset-building program for children. This study enhances knowledge about saving in CDAs, incentives in public policy in general, and incentives in savings policy in particular. Results can inform CDA policy design.

Overview Of Child Development Accounts In Developing Countries, Jeff Meyer, Rainier D. Masa, Jamie M. Zimmerman Sep 2009

Overview Of Child Development Accounts In Developing Countries, Jeff Meyer, Rainier D. Masa, Jamie M. Zimmerman

Center for Social Development Research

Child Development Accounts (CDAs) as a matter of policy have existed for some time, though predominantly in developed countries. While there are at least a few government social programs with CDA components in the developing world, such policies have yet to gain significant traction. This paper finds that despite this lack of policy movement, CDAs do exist in developing countries in a variety of forms and delivered by a diverse group of institutions. Government-linked institutions (such as savings and post banks); non-governmental institutions (such as credit unions and NGOs); and commercial financial institutions are all innovating in CDA design and …

The Child Trust Fund In The Uk: Policy Challenges And Potential Responses, Rajiv Prabhakar Sep 2009

The Child Trust Fund In The Uk: Policy Challenges And Potential Responses, Rajiv Prabhakar

Center for Social Development Research

The United Kingdom introduced the Child Trust Fund (CTF) policy, a children’s savings policy, in 2002. a focus group study conducted on parental attitudes to the CTF (Prabhakar, 2006, 2007) identified main reasons why CTF accounts were left unopened. This paper explores different ways that non-opening of accounts might be reduced. One strategy draws upon recent developments in behavioral economics and points to different ways that the CTF may be designed. an alternative strategy emphasises the role of financial education of parents as a way of addressing their concerns and increasing the opening rates of these accounts. The paper also …
