Taming Augustine’S Monstrosity: Aquinas’S Notion Of Use In The Struggle For Moral Growth, Theresa W. Tobin Jan 2009

Taming Augustine’S Monstrosity: Aquinas’S Notion Of Use In The Struggle For Moral Growth, Theresa W. Tobin

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

In Book VI of his Confessions, Saint Augustine offers a detailed description of one of the most famous cases of weakness of will in the history of philosophy. Augustine characterizes his experience as a monstrous situation in which he both wills and does not will moral growth, but he is at odds to explain this phenomenon. In this paper, I argue that Aquinas’s action theory offers important resources for explaining Augustine’s monstrosity. On Aquinas’s schema, human acts are composed of various operations of intellect and will, and thus are subject to disintegration. In order to capture the gap in …

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse Jan 2009

The Fair Information Principles: A Comparison Of U.S. And Canadian Privacy Policy As Applied To The Private Sector, Shane Crounse

Theses

U.S. consumers are worried about their privacy and their personal information. High profile cases of identity theft involving companies losing the private information of hundreds of thousands of customers have only served to elevate the mistrust consumers have for companies that collect and share their personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is charged with protecting U.S. consumers from fraud, deception, and unfair business practices in the marketplace; a task made difficult by an overarching need to balance the rights of the individuals against the security needs of the country and the free flow of information required by a free …

Adolescent Technology Usage During Sleep-Time: Does It Influence Their Quality Of Sleep, Attention Difficulties And Academic Performance?, Kristin Dehmler Jan 2009

Adolescent Technology Usage During Sleep-Time: Does It Influence Their Quality Of Sleep, Attention Difficulties And Academic Performance?, Kristin Dehmler

Theses

Many adolescents use the Internet, cell phones, television, and computer and video games on a daily basis. Therefore, an important question for educators is: how is technology affecting adolescents' quality and quantity of sleep, their attention difficulties, and their academic performance? The purpose of the current project was to examine the relationships between adolescent self-reports of technology usage, sleep patterns, attention difficulties and academic achievement. Results indicated that nocturnal technology use has a negative impact on adolescents' quality and quantity of sleep. Furthermore both technology use in general and reported attention difficulties have a negative impact on adolescents' academic achievement. …

A Program Evaluation: Therapeutic Playgroup For Preschool -Aged Children With Mental Health Needs, Denise M. Harden

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The understanding of preschool children has been explored in the fields of developmentalPsychology and early childhoodEducation. The field of schoolPsychology has also increased interest in the assessment of the social and emotional functioning of preschool children (Martin, 1986). Currently, there are changes in nationalEducation policy and societal pressures for systematic, professional assessment and intervention with younger children (Executive Office of the President, 1990). In addition, focus has been placed on the incorporation of evidence-based practices into assessment and treatment (Tolan & Dodge, 2005). Mental health services, in particular, aim to address the social and emotional needs of children and families …

Age Differences In Pain Locus Of Control And Pain Outcomes, Karen P. Elliott Jan 2009

Age Differences In Pain Locus Of Control And Pain Outcomes, Karen P. Elliott

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic pain is responsible for the majority of physician visits in the United States and results in substantial medical costs. Thus, it is vital that a comprehensive understanding of the pain experience be obtained. There is surprisingly little research on the experience of chronic pain among the growing aging population. To date, the literature on younger individuals has been generalized to older individuals, and research has failed to examine differences that may exist between younger and older individuals with chronic pain. The present investigation sought to gain a more comprehensive understanding of age differences in the pain experience, particularly in …

An Examination Of Therapist Characteristics Related To A Beneficial Therapeutic Relationship: The Trainee Characteristics Inventory, Kristoffer S. Schnur Jan 2009

An Examination Of Therapist Characteristics Related To A Beneficial Therapeutic Relationship: The Trainee Characteristics Inventory, Kristoffer S. Schnur

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is now a widely held belief that psychotherapy is effective. In fact, teasing out the exact components is a difficult task. Recent research indicates that therapist characteristics are highly correlated with the ability to form a beneficial working alliance; however, understanding the exact nature of these characteristics is under-studied. Thus, the purpose of this study is to develop an empirical instrument that identifies and measures therapist characteristics related to the formation of a beneficial working alliance. Developing a more thorough understanding of the characteristics is critical since the relationship has been shown to be a robust predictor of clinical …

Attention -Deficit /Hyperactivity Disorder And Sleep Disturbances: Consideration Of Familial Influences, Gretchen Stuckert Noble

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study examined the extent to which parenting influences problems with sleep in children referred for an evaluation of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Data was collected from parents and/or legal guardians of sixty-three 4- to 12-year old children referred for assessment at an ADHD Evaluation Clinic located at a Midwestern university. Previous literature linking sleep problems to ADHD has typically derived from community and pediatric sleep clinic samples and has largely overlooked children with sub-clinical sleep impairments and/or those whose sleep problems stem from alternate etiologies. More than 60% of parents/caregivers in the current study reported significant child sleep difficulties. …

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky Jan 2009

Marital Satisfaction: Ideal Versus Real Mate, Angela L. Beachkofsky

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Relationships play a significant role in emotional and physical well-being. Although many people believe that satisfying close relationships constitute the very best thing in life” (Berscheid, 1999, p. 260), the factors which contribute to relationship satisfaction have remained a mystery over the centuries. With almost half of all first marriages ending in divorce (United States Census Bureau, 2002), researchers have the opportunity to investigate potential reasons behind the apparent unhappiness and create interventions to support couples. This paper outlines the different, sometimes contradictory, aspects of marital satisfaction (personality, interactions, and expectations) and proposes a more comprehensive approach to explain some …

Optimal Experience In Relationships, Activities, And Beyond: Connecting Flow With Self -Expansion, Brandy M. Dean Jan 2009

Optimal Experience In Relationships, Activities, And Beyond: Connecting Flow With Self -Expansion, Brandy M. Dean

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Flow is a state of optimal experience characterized by complete immersion in an enjoyable activity and has been associated with positive experience in activities. Self-expansion is a state of increase in the diversity and complexity of the self and has been linked with positive experience in relationships. Despite phenomenological similarities, the connection between these two states has not been examined. The current study used a correlational design to explore the degrees of overlap between these states by comparing them in general, situation-specific, and predictive contexts. It was expected that flow and self-expansion would occur at similar frequencies, be produced by …

Professional Psychology Training Programs: Program Interventions And Prediction Of Doctoral Student Stress And Life Satisfaction, Crista Montgomery Jan 2009

Professional Psychology Training Programs: Program Interventions And Prediction Of Doctoral Student Stress And Life Satisfaction, Crista Montgomery

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A growing literature on professional training and practice ofPsychology advocates that psychologists must be educated on risks and effects of impairment and the importance of self-care. Despite the general recognition of the importance of these issues, they have not been incorporated into training standards such as the American Psychological Association (APA) Guidelines and Principles of Accreditation (2007). In order to assess the approaches that programs currently adopt to address impairment and self-care, this study extended and updated previous research. A large sample of students ( n = 591) enrolled in APA accredited doctoral training programs in professionalPsychology completed surveys regarding …

Positive Religious Coping And Emotion Regulation As Predictors Of Psychological Well -Being, Angela L. Vredeveld Jan 2009

Positive Religious Coping And Emotion Regulation As Predictors Of Psychological Well -Being, Angela L. Vredeveld

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Several decades of research in thePsychology of religion have established a positive relationship between religious involvement and well-being. However, research into mediators responsible for this relationship is limited. Two mediators that have been proposed, yet appear to share some overlap, are religious coping and emotion regulation (ER). This project examined whether positive religious coping could be reduced to a form of ER, or whether positive religious coping is associated with distinct affective and psychological health benefits above and beyond ER. Participants included 317 undergraduate students at Indiana State University who completed questionnaires regarding their use of certain ER strategies and …

Stressful Life Events And Interpersonal, Religious, And Spiritual Changes, Paul Murdock Jan 2009

Stressful Life Events And Interpersonal, Religious, And Spiritual Changes, Paul Murdock

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Survivors of stressful life events and traumatic experiences often report positive psychological changes "...as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances" (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 2004, p. 1). Three often reported areas of growth include having a greater appreciation for life in general, new priorities, and an increased significance placed on interpersonal, spiritual or religious issues. Despite reports of positive changes, the literature on stress-related growth (SRG) is inconclusive as to whether SRG is an illusion or represents actual change. For example, no studies to date appear to use longitudinal data, objective indictors, or behavioral measures of change. …

Website Compliance With Ethical Guidelines By Psychologists And Professional Counselors, Joseph Iii Yazvac Jan 2009

Website Compliance With Ethical Guidelines By Psychologists And Professional Counselors, Joseph Iii Yazvac

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is currently very little research investigating the ethical practice of e-therapy, and none that distinguishes between types of therapists in terms of their compliance with ethical codes pertaining to e-therapy. The American Psychological Association does not have ethical standards specific to the provision of e-therapy but the American Counseling Association does. The purpose of this study was to assess differences in ethical compliance for e-therapy websites sponsored by psychologists and e-therapy websites sponsored by professional counselors. Specific ethics codes for the practice of e-therapy of the American Counseling Association were used to generate an assessment instrument, which served as …

The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald Jan 2009

The Well-Being And Identities Of 14- To 26-Year-Old Intercountry Adoptees And Their Non-Adopted Migrant Peers In Western Australia, Geertruda Rosenwald

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Intercountry adoption is a globally politicised institution that triggers strong discourses about whether transplantation to a markedly different country and culture, often into families with racially different parents, negatively affects the children ' s well-being and identity. Although empirical intercountry adoption research has increased elsewhere, Australian-based research has lagged behind. This thesis presents a body of evidence about the well-being and identity of over half the population of 14- to 26-year-old intercountry adoptees in Western Australia, how their well-being changed from 1994 to 2004, how they compare with non-adopted migrant peers and the influence of risk and threat factors. In …

A Rylean Revision To Biological Naturalism, Timothy E. Kunke Jan 2009

A Rylean Revision To Biological Naturalism, Timothy E. Kunke

Master's Theses

This essay is a contrasting of John Searle's biological naturalist view of the mind with Gilbert Ryle's deconstruction of the problem of mind-body interaction. These two positions are most uniquely suited for this purpose since, together they constitute the best positive theory and criticism of the same problem. It will be argued that consciousness - a feature of human experience which proves to be one of the most difficult to account for, from the perspective of the naturalist can be regarded as a dispositional attribute of a complex biological organism. Considered as such, it is what Searle would term a …

Layering, Aimee Pickett

Theses

It is my belief that furniture has the potential to store worlds. It can protect the china inherited from a grandmother. It can display porcelain bowls collected on a trip through Asia. It can bear the scratches from a pet, or carry the hallmarks of its previous owner. These are merely a few examples of how furniture can store personal history. In the same vein, I believe that a piece of furniture has the potential to become a metaphor of oneself through daily interaction. Ideally what is chosen for a home reflects one self, and as a result each home …

Assessing Instructional Strategies At Barbados Community College Hospitality Institute In A Dynamic Global Environment, Juiann Young-Lovell Jan 2009

Assessing Instructional Strategies At Barbados Community College Hospitality Institute In A Dynamic Global Environment, Juiann Young-Lovell

Theses

Today, there are educational institutions whose offerings highlight the value of a blended learning experience. Such organizations design their curricula to enhance students' knowledge, skills and attitudes. These institutions integrate several elements into the learning experience. The subject mater is taught, provision is made for students to practice and this all takes place in the traditional or virtual classroom or in a real world setting. Instructional practice is the bridge between the student and the teacher. At the Barbados Community College Hospitality Institute (BCCHI), there is no evidence that the faculty has conducted formal assessment of the organisation's instructional practices …

Analytical Jurisprudence And The Concept Of Commercial Law, John Linarelli Jan 2009

Analytical Jurisprudence And The Concept Of Commercial Law, John Linarelli

Scholarly Works

Commercial lawyers working across borders know that globalization has changed commercial law. To think of commercial law as only the law of states is to have an inadequate understanding of the norms governing commercial transactions. Some have argued for a transnational conception of commercial law, but their grounds of justification have been unpersuasive, often grounded on claims about the common content among national legal systems. Legal positivism is a rich literature on the concept of a legal system and the validity conditions for rules in legal systems, but it has not been used to understand legal order outside or beyond …
