Effects Of Stereotyping On Mood, Ovidiu Dobria Nov 2009

Effects Of Stereotyping On Mood, Ovidiu Dobria

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The study investigated the influence of stereotyping on mood. It was hypothesized that people who were able to solve a problem by applying a stereotype will experience more positive affect compared to people who could not, and that the relationship between stereotyping and mood was mediated by effort and by certainty. 70 undergraduates were asked to predict the academic trajectory of a college applicant based on information provided by a typed college application form and by an essay. For half the participants the applicant was identified as Asian; for the others, the applicant was Anglo. The essay provided information that …

Alcohol Use And Gender Effects On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Cocaine-Using Methadone Patients, Carla J. Rash, Nancy M. Petry Nov 2009

Alcohol Use And Gender Effects On Hiv Risk Behaviors In Cocaine-Using Methadone Patients, Carla J. Rash, Nancy M. Petry

UCHC Articles - Research

Injection drug users engage in behaviors that increase the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other infectious diseases. Although methadone maintenance (MM) is highly effective in decreasing heroin use and the spread of HIV, polydrug use, especially the combined use of cocaine and alcohol, is common in MM patients. Alcohol use is independently associated with HIV risk behaviors, and the effects of alcohol use on risk behaviors may vary by gender. This study evaluated the effects of recent heavy alcohol use and gender with respect to HIV risk behaviors in 118 cocaine-abusing methadone patients. Both lifetime and past month …

Individualized Assessment And Treatment Program For Alcohol Dependence: Results Of An Initial Study To Train Coping Skills, Mark D. Litt, Ronald M. Kadden, Elise Kabela-Cormier Nov 2009

Individualized Assessment And Treatment Program For Alcohol Dependence: Results Of An Initial Study To Train Coping Skills, Mark D. Litt, Ronald M. Kadden, Elise Kabela-Cormier

UCHC Articles - Research

Cognitive-behavioral treatments (CBT) are among the most popular interventions offered for alcohol and other substance use disorders, but it is not clear how they achieve their effects. CBT is purported to exert its beneficial effects by altering coping skills, but data supporting coping changes as the mechanism of action are mixed. The purpose of this pilot study was to test a treatment in which coping skills were trained in a highly individualized way, allowing us to determine if such training would result in an effective treatment. Conclusions The IATP approach was more successful than PCBT at training adaptive coping responses …

How The Conception Of Knowledge Influences Our Educational Practices: Toward A Philosophical Understanding Of Epistemology In Education, James Magrini Nov 2009

How The Conception Of Knowledge Influences Our Educational Practices: Toward A Philosophical Understanding Of Epistemology In Education, James Magrini

Philosophy Scholarship

This paper explores how the conception and valuation of the knowledge within our educational practices determines the planning, writing, and implementation of the curriculum. There is a pressing need for educators to philosophically and systematically understand the relationship between the foundational epistemological beliefs that ground a curriculum and its relationship to forming the notions of competency, pedagogy, and the methods for evaluating and assessing student progress. These issues are not only relevant, but crucial when attempting to justify a particular conception of education, which relates directly to the student's potential for intellectual growth and social development. It may be argued …

Relationship Of Cigarette Smoking And The Habits Of A Smoker’S Family, Danielle Strasser Nov 2009

Relationship Of Cigarette Smoking And The Habits Of A Smoker’S Family, Danielle Strasser

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to see if there is a co relational relationship between an individual’s smoking habits and the smoking habits of his/her family. There were hopes of finding a relationship between people’s habits and whether their smoking relative is biologically related or not. The hypothesis seeks to find a relationship between an individual’s smoking habits and the smoking habits of their family. There were seventy-eight undergraduate students from Lindenwood University surveyed and only eight were smokers. Thirty-seven point five percent, or three out of eight, smokers in the study had a mom that smoked, and the …

Detecting Lag-One Autocorrelation In Interrupted Time Series Experiments With Small Datasets, Clare Riviello, S. Natasha Beretvas

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The power and type I error rates of eight indices for lag-one autocorrelation detection were assessed for interrupted time series experiments (ITSEs) with small numbers of data points. Performance of Huitema and McKean’s (2000) zHM statistic was modified and compared with the zHM, five information criteria and the Durbin-Watson statistic.

Relationship Between Internal Consistency And Goodness Of Fit Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis With Varimax Rotation, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo, James B. Schreiber Nov 2009

Relationship Between Internal Consistency And Goodness Of Fit Maximum Likelihood Factor Analysis With Varimax Rotation, Gibbs Y. Kanyongo, James B. Schreiber

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This study investigates how reliability (internal consistency) affects model-fitting in maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis (EFA). This was accomplished through an examination of goodness of fit indices between the population and the sample matrices. Monte Carlo simulations were performed to create pseudo-populations with known parameters. Results indicated that the higher the internal consistency the worse the fit. It is postulated that the observations are similar to those from structural equation modeling where a good fit with low correlations can be observed and also the reverse with higher item correlations.

Level Robust Methods Based On The Least Squares Regression Estimator, Marie Ng, Rand R. Wilcox Nov 2009

Level Robust Methods Based On The Least Squares Regression Estimator, Marie Ng, Rand R. Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Heteroscedastic consistent covariance matrix (HCCM) estimators provide ways for testing hypotheses about regression coefficients under heteroscedasticity. Recent studies have found that methods combining the HCCM-based test statistic with the wild bootstrap consistently perform better than non-bootstrap HCCM-based methods (Davidson & Flachaire, 2008; Flachaire, 2005; Godfrey, 2006). This finding is more closely examined by considering a broader range of situations which were not included in any of the previous studies. In addition, the latest version of HCCM, HC5 (Cribari-Neto, et al., 2007), is evaluated.

Estimation Of The Standardized Mean Difference For Repeated Measures Designs, Lindsey J. Wolff Smith, S. Natasha Beretvas Nov 2009

Estimation Of The Standardized Mean Difference For Repeated Measures Designs, Lindsey J. Wolff Smith, S. Natasha Beretvas

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This simulation study modified the repeated measures mean difference effect size, d=RM , for scenarios with unequal pre- and post-test score variances. Relative parameter and SE bias were calculated for dRM ≠ versus dRM = . Results consistently favored d≠RM over d=RM with worse positive parameter and negative SE bias identified for d=RM for increasingly heterogeneous variance conditions.

Planning For Internationalization By Investing In Faculty, Lisa K. Childress Ed.D. Nov 2009

Planning For Internationalization By Investing In Faculty, Lisa K. Childress Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Over the last half century, major world events have prompted higher education institutions to develop internationalization plans. In order engage faculty in internationalization, higher education scholars and practitioners have recommended that internationalization plans include allocated resources, such as budgets for academic exchanges, faculty development workshops, and international curricular development and research grants (Olson, Green, & Hill, 2006; Paige, 2005; Siaya & Hayward, 2003). Yet, a frequently cited obstacle to faculty engagement in internationalization plans is lack of funding (Backman, 1984; Bond, 2003; Ellingboe, 1998; Green & Olson, 2003; Steers & Ungsen, 1992; Woolston, 1983). A cross-case analysis reveals that differential …

The Complexities Of De-Constructing The Constraints To African American Female Participation In Swimming: A Rejoinder To Irwin Et Al., Steven N. Waller, Dawn M. Norwood Nov 2009

The Complexities Of De-Constructing The Constraints To African American Female Participation In Swimming: A Rejoinder To Irwin Et Al., Steven N. Waller, Dawn M. Norwood

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

This rejoinder to Irwin et al. is written to address several concerns regarding “Myth #4: Personal Appearance Limitations” in their recent article. Constraints to leisure are complex and become more complicated when race, culture, family socialization, and hair are combined. Despite the data-driven evidence which they argue refutes “Myth 4” there are several practical concerns that are raised toward better understanding the responses of African American females in the study. We posit that a heightened understanding of the interaction between culture, race, and gender in the case of African American females is vital to the interpretation of the data associated …

Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu Nov 2009

Compassion: Why It Is Better To Eat Fish, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Compassion was probably the farthest notion from Colonel Sanders’ mind when he became the global poster boy for delicious fried chicken. He had started his business in the early twentieth century – a period marked by the great depression and two world wars. Prejudices festered under the hostile global climate then, where little consideration was given to the suffering of human beings, much less animals. However, with the progress of time, scientific advancements have urged us, increasingly, to be kinder to fellow humans, animals, the environment… and that we really ought to be munching on fried fish instead.

General Perceptions Of Homosexuality In A Small Private University In The Greater Saint Louis Area, Verenna Huerta, Taylor Morrill Nov 2009

General Perceptions Of Homosexuality In A Small Private University In The Greater Saint Louis Area, Verenna Huerta, Taylor Morrill

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Homosexuality has long been a major topic of concern among political, social, and religious agendas. Societies have either labeled homosexuality as deviant or non-deviant behavior. This type of categorization has lead to many negative assumptions about those who hold a different type of sexual orientation other than heterosexual. According to Pachankis and Goldfried, (2008, p. 3), “Gay male undergraduate students reported a higher fear of negative evaluation and greater social interaction anxiety than did heterosexual students.” Students in educational systems who are homosexual, bisexual, lesbian, or transgendered often battle with peer evaluation. The knowledge of students’ perceptions, attitudes, and comfort …

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D. Nov 2009

Nepal’S Civil War And Its Economic Costs, Gyan Pradhan Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper estimates the macroeconomic effects of increased spending on defense and internal security necessitated by the decade-long Maoist insurgency in Nepal. An investment equation is specified to examine the relationship between defense spending and investment. The estimation results indicate that there is a significant negative effect of defense spending on investment. A simple Harrod-Domar growth relationship is used to estimate the effect of the increase in defense spending on economic growth. This analysis suggests that between 1996 and 2006, the opportunity cost of the conflict in terms of lost output has been about 3 percent of Nepal’s current GDP.
