Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams Jan 2009

Assessing University Strategic Plans: A Tool For Consideration, Shannon Chance, Brenda T. Williams

Articles

This article explores the use of rubrics as tools for assessing the quality of university-developed strategic plans. While tools exist for assessing the quality of the planning process, such tools are not readily available for assessing the resulting product or the overall quality of the plan itself. Specifi cally, a rubric is described that has been designed and fi eld-tested for the purpose of evaluating the strategic planning document produced at the university level. This approach builds upon outcome assessment methods developed in the business sector and proposes a tool tailored for use in higher education.

Measuring The Value Of Collegiality Among Law Professors, Michael L. Seigel, Kathi Miner-Rubino Jan 2009

Measuring The Value Of Collegiality Among Law Professors, Michael L. Seigel, Kathi Miner-Rubino

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article is the last in a trilogy addressing the issue of collegiality among law In the first piece, titled On Collegiality, author Seigel defined professors' "collegiality" and suggested that most law schools have at least one, if not two or three, "affirmatively uncollegial" members of their faculty. Seigel posited that these individuals tend to interfere with the ideal functioning of their institutions by negatively affecting the well-being of their peers. Some readers of On Collegiality questioned the legitimacy of Seigel's cost-benefit analysis. Specifically, they commented that some of the factors Seigel used in his analysis could be empirically measured. …

Library Technology Center Debuts At North Georgia College, Shawn C. Tonner

Georgia Library Quarterly

The article reports on the opening of the Library Technology Center at North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega to crowds of students, faculty, staff and community members on August 19, 2008. A brief overview is given on the history, graduate programs, and student population of the university. The college library needed more and better seating and public computing, library instruction spaces and collection space. These factors, combined with limited Americans with Disabilities Act accessibility and inadequate electrical, lighting and life-safety systems, created a compelling case for a library building project.

Rhymes With Rich: Power, Law, And The Bitch, Yvonne A. Tamayo Jan 2009

Rhymes With Rich: Power, Law, And The Bitch, Yvonne A. Tamayo

St. Thomas Law Review

For over six centuries, bitch has been used as a term of contempt toward women. Originally, bitch referenced a sensual or promiscuous woman, and later evolved to include a woman considered angry, spiteful, or malicious. Today, the term includes a woman deemed aggressive, competitive, or domineering. Despite its definitional nuances, bitch remains an unequivocal expression of hostility used to denounce, harass, and insult women who, by acting outside of their prescribed gender roles, threaten the established paradigm of power as an inherently male characteristic. Part I of this article examines the animus behind the bitch epithets levied against women in …

A Model For The Evaluation Of Is/It Investments, Paul M. Tuten Jan 2009

A Model For The Evaluation Of Is/It Investments, Paul M. Tuten

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation is a vital--yet challenging--part of IS/IT management and governance. The benefits (or lack therefore) associated with IS/IT investments have been widely debated within academic and industrial communities alike. Investments in information technology may or may not result in desirable outcomes. Yet, organizations must rely on information systems to remain competitive. Effective evaluation serves as one pathway to ensuring success. However, despite a growing multitude of measures and methods, practitioners continue to struggle with this intractable problem.

Responding to the limited success of existing methods, scholars have argued that academicians should first develop a better understanding of the process of …

The Effects Of Organizational Culture And Climate On Employee's Turnover In Public Child Welfare Agencies, Miseung Shim Jan 2009

The Effects Of Organizational Culture And Climate On Employee's Turnover In Public Child Welfare Agencies, Miseung Shim

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Background & Purpose: Employee's turnover in child welfare agencies negatively influences remaining employees, clients, and organization itself as well as losing skilled or trained employees. For example, employee's high turnover tends to be cyclical, in that high turnover gives additional workload burden to remaining employees and causes lack of continuity of services for vulnerable children and families. Moreover, child welfare agencies have to bear financial costs, including hiring and training. Although current literature increasingly emphasizes the importance of organizational factors in employee's turnover issues, more empirical research is needed to be conducted to understand organizational effects on employee's turnover. This …

How The Individual Differences Of Subordinates Within The Workplace Predict Leadership Style Preference And Organizational Commitment, Elizabeth A. Rupprecht, '09 Jan 2009

How The Individual Differences Of Subordinates Within The Workplace Predict Leadership Style Preference And Organizational Commitment, Elizabeth A. Rupprecht, '09

Honors Projects

The connection between leader and subordinate is a crucial one for businesses. One reason this connection is crucial is that many subordinates see the business through the eyes of their managers or super-ordinates. Leaders with certain abilities and attributes can help employees feel more comfortable with their work environment. Different subordinates in specific work environment situations may desire different attributes in a leader. Conversely, individuals with specific personality attributes and a similar work environment may, therefore, desire the same type of leader. The following study will attempt to describe the relations between subordinates' personality characteristics, gender, job stereo typicality and …

Do Good Things Come Out After Recessions? The Productivity-Business Cycle Interaction, Michael M. Alba, Lawrence B. Dacuycuy

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

For the past two decades, the Philippines has endured a wave of recessions, events that technically represent fluctuations in economic activity. While some of these recessions have been shallow, resulting in minor deviations from where our economy should be, some have been deep and devastating like the ones that occurred during the last years of the Marcos regime.

Brokering Up: The Role Of Temporary Staffing In Overcoming Labor Market Barriers, Françoise Carré, Brandynn Holgate, Helen Levine, Mandira Kala

Center for Social Policy Publications

Alternative Staffing Organizations (ASOs) are social-purpose businesses created by community-based organizations and national nonprofits to “broker up” job seekers, starting with temporary assignments and forming bridges to better jobs. Funded by the C. S. Mott Foundation, the Alternative Staffing Demonstration examined four ASOs around the country for a three-year research project, with 18 months of close monitoring, exploring, and assessing the ASO model. The Center for Social Policy studied how ASOs structure the services they provide, handle day-to-day management issues, and sell their services. We found the ASO model was variously adapted to generate short-term employment, build work experience, provide …

Rage From Within The Machine: Protest Music, Social Justice, And Educational Reform, A Collective Case Study, John A. Giancola Jr. Jan 2009

Rage From Within The Machine: Protest Music, Social Justice, And Educational Reform, A Collective Case Study, John A. Giancola Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

School reform initiatives in the United States have been occurring since the launching of Sputnik by the U.S.S.R. in 1957. These efforts have largely been internal, within school reforms, with little consideration given to external variables such as poverty that affect student achievement. Given the pervasive link between poverty and student achievement, the author argues for an expanded leadership lens which includes social justice. In an effort to learn more about social justice, three socially conscious activist musicians/groups were studied in a qualitative collective case study. The formative influences of the artists were analyzed. The activist activity of the bands …

A Network Collaborative Design Construct For The Dissemination Of Aviation Safety Research, Brent D. Bowen, Erin E. Block, Manoj S. Patankar

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2009

The constructs for collaborative network building include common tenets for the establishment of communication channels not only within the network but for constituencies external to the network. These constituencies are beneficiaries of the resulting knowledge which emerges and is disseminated. The Safety Across High-Consequence Industries (SAHI) conference was formed in 2003 for the purpose of bringing together safety leaders from multiple fields within the high consequence industries of healthcare, nuclear power, aviation, and others. Through SAHI four multinational conferences have been convened and resulted in bodies of safety knowledge available through widely distributed proceedings. In the process of generating and …

Literacy Leadership In Secondary Schools: A Case Study Of Teaching And Learning In Two School Districts, Gregory Berry Jan 2009

Literacy Leadership In Secondary Schools: A Case Study Of Teaching And Learning In Two School Districts, Gregory Berry

Dissertations and Theses

Improvement in literacy learning in secondary schools requires a dual focus: a district and school organizational leadership approach, and a classroom- and instruction-focused approach. To help close the achievement gap and improve learning for all students, whole school reform efforts must be focused on literacy. Elements of whole school reform may include professional development programs such as professional learning communities, peer coaching, and literacy coaching. The sociocultural contexts that these approaches incorporate can help improve the learning of both teachers and students and can bring about significant secondary school reform and academic improvement.

This dissertation study is a qualitative, collective, …

Contributions By Individual And Group Strategies For Organizational Learning In Architectural, Engineering, And Construction Firms, Robert Beaver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organizations with multiple operating requirements require support functions to assist in execution of strategic goals. This effort, in turn, requires management of engineering activities in control of projects and in sustaining facilities. High level strategies include employing engineering support that consists of a project management function encompassing technical and managerial disciplines. The architecture/engineering, and construction office (AEC) is the subject of this research. Engineering and construction oriented organizations have experienced challenges to their abilities to learn and grow. This has potential detrimental implications for these organizations if support functions cannot keep pace with changing objectives and strategy. The competitive nature …

New Sources Of Managerial Authority In Large Law Firms, Elizabeth Chambliss Jan 2009

New Sources Of Managerial Authority In Large Law Firms, Elizabeth Chambliss

Faculty Publications

The academic literature on large law firms emphasizes the limited authority of professional managers and the ability of rainmaking partners to sidestep formal management controls. Research suggests that bureaucratic management structures, such as dedicated, professional managers, tend to be weak or unstable in law firms, where compensation and status are tied to control over clients. Thus, while many commentators point to the potential competitive benefits of professional management - or, what typically is referred to as the "corporate" model - most analysts are skeptical that U.S. law firms will embrace such a model any time soon.

Theses and Dissertations

Despite an abundance of scientific evidence to ensure nurse clinicians deliver the highest quality of care to achieve optimal outcomes for patients, barriers and challenges exist that prevent adoption of this evidence into routine clinical practice. Evidence-Based Practice Clinical Research Fellowship Programs (EBP CRFP) are designed and implemented to facilitate the adoption of scientific evidence into clinical nursing practice; however, these programs have not been adequately evaluated in terms of the impact of the program on participants, their clinical practice, and the organization. The purpose of this hermeneutical phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of nurse clinicians who …

An Evaluation Of Congruency Of Nursing Staff Values And Organizational Vincentian Values, Beverly S. Quaye Jan 2009

An Evaluation Of Congruency Of Nursing Staff Values And Organizational Vincentian Values, Beverly S. Quaye

Theses and Dissertations

This case study was an exploration of values-congruence between personal and organizational values in a healthcare setting. Previous research has found that alignment between the two improves organizational effectiveness. The setting was a 384-bed urban Catholic hospital with Vincentian values. The efficacy of Vincentian values is found only in the academic and religious literature, not in that of healthcare. Published studies on registered nurses' values focus primarily on ethical reasoning and decision making. Employee values were defined using Rokeach's conceptual model for instrumental and terminal values. Both are based on enduring beliefs with specific modes of conduct or end-states of …

Diversity Leader: Case Study Of A Selected Organization's Transformation, Aileen Guerrero Zaballero Jan 2009

Diversity Leader: Case Study Of A Selected Organization's Transformation, Aileen Guerrero Zaballero

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Diversity initiatives have evolved from a focus on compliance-oriented training to a systematic approach which integrates the many dimensions of diversity in all aspects of business to enhance performance through the practice of organization development (OD) (Bendick, Egan, & Lofhjelm, 2001). Many organizations have implemented short term solutions to address the demographic changes in the workforce, but have had minimal results. When diversity interventions are conceptually grounded in organization development practices the results are much more substantial for both the employees and the organization (2001). The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceived influential factors of …

Configurations Of Site-Based Financial Leadership Practice Within School Contexts, Sylvia Tegano Jan 2009

Configurations Of Site-Based Financial Leadership Practice Within School Contexts, Sylvia Tegano

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This study employed an ethnographic perspective to generate a grounded theory that contributes to the understanding of financial leadership practice in four elementary school contexts: Non Title I School, Title I School, Empowerment School and Charter School. The literature, interviews, observations, document analysis, and review of relevant financial artifacts at each site were used to form an Innovation Configuration Map, which represented financial leadership practice.

Results showed that financial leadership practices are rooted in targeted resource tools, mindful internal accountability routines, and collaborative, inquiry based mindsets of school practitioners. Moreover, variations emerged such that financial leadership practices adapted to the …
