Designing For Agility As An Organizational Capability: Learning From A Software Development Firm, James Sena, Jean-Francois Coget, A.B. (Rami) Shani

Management, HR and Information Systems

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the nature of agility in an organizational setting-- how a software development firm (SDF) developed, maintained and enhanced agility as it changed from a developer of experimental prototypes to a product-based provider. Qualitative approach based on extensive interviews and on-site observations at two points in time separated by a five-year interval. Agility mechanisms tend to be dynamic and evolve over time. At time 1, SDF achieved agility by adopting a formal platform-based product design and an informal, organic organizational structure. By time 2, SDF had adopted a modular-based product design and a …

Homeland Security And The Police Mission, Stephen A. Morreale, David E. Lambert

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The terrorist attacks on America are seen as a pivotal period for the nation and for policing. They have thrust policing into a new mission that will have a wide ranging impact on the police role, organizational strategies, staffing, training and policy. State, local and tribal police are now at the forefront of Homeland Security activities, yet there remains a great deal of uncertainty about their mission. The ramp-up efforts by federal and state government are reminiscent of the staging for civil defense in the 1960's. As a result of 9/11, there has been an invigoration for cities and towns to …

Ninth-Grade Interventions And The Impact On High School Graduation Rates, Shannon Mcbrady Jan 2009

Ninth-Grade Interventions And The Impact On High School Graduation Rates, Shannon Mcbrady

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

There is a need to become economically sensible when deciding on new school initiatives and reforms. This is partly due to increasing accountability and tightening school budgets. Hertzog & Morgan (1999) found the freshman year sets the tone for a student‟s entire high school career. Yet, frequently, ninth-graders struggle to feel connected to school and therefore experience failure. Often times this period of failure is related to the developmental process the ninth-grader experiences. Many ninth-graders struggle in various areas including behavioral growth, social pressures, and adjusting to the rigidity of high school (Mizelle & Irvin, 2000). Researchers have found that …

Construction Of A Scoring Manual For The Sentence Stem "A Good Boss--" For The Sentence Completion Test Integral (Scti-Map), Angela Christine Miniard

ETD Archive

Ego development theory, proposed by Jane Loevinger (1966, 1976), is the study of how an individual's processing of experience and meaning-making of the world develops. The tool used to measure ego development is the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT), and its scoring manual is the foundation for the high validity and reliability of the measurement tool. Susanne Cook-Greuter (1999b) constructed a modified version of the WUSCT, the Sentence Completion Test Integral (SCTi-MAP), and in order to continue the trend of strong psychometric properties, a scoring manual needs to be constructed for the new sentence stems found on the SCTi-MAP. …

What combination of forces precipitated urban development in the ancient Mediterranean world? Are the remnants of such forces identifiable in the archaeological record? Since the Mediterranean basin presented itself as an ethnically diverse region where goods and services were transported largely by water, to what degree was urban development at the local level stimulated by the expansion of overseas empires? More specifically, does a ›world system‹ theoretical construct adequately address the phenomenon of urban development in the ancient Mediterranean world? This construct has gained significant popularity with those attempting to explain the pace and scale of development in the pre-classical …

Cahokia's Boom And Bust In The Context Of Climate Change, Larry Benson, Timothy R. Pauketat, Edward R. Cook Jan 2009

Cahokia's Boom And Bust In The Context Of Climate Change, Larry Benson, Timothy R. Pauketat, Edward R. Cook

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

During the early Mississippian Lohmann phase (A.D. 1050-1100), the American Bottom experienced a political and economic transformation. This transformation included the abrupt planned construction of central Cahokia, a large-scale influx of people to "downtown Cahokia," the abandonment of pre-Mississippian village settlements, the reorganization of farming in the Mississippi River floodplain, and the founding of the Richland farming complex in the Illinois uplands. New tree ring-based records of climate change indicate that this rapid development occurred during one of the wettest 50-year periods during the last millennium. During the next 150 years, a series of persistent droughts occurred in the Cahokian …

The Management Development Legacy Of Robert Greenleaf, Jeff Mccollum, Joel Moses Jan 2009

The Management Development Legacy Of Robert Greenleaf, Jeff Mccollum, Joel Moses

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Robert Greenleaf's writings have inspired considerable thought and have been well documented. Robert Greenleaf's name will forever, and appropriately so, be linked with "servant-leadership"-something he wrote extensively about in his second career as author and consultant. Greenleaf's first career, the 38 years he spent with AT&T, left a legacy of rich innovation. At that time, the official name of the company was American Telephone and Telegraph. We will use AT & T, the contemporary identification, throughout this article. In Greenleaf's work there, we can find the antecedents to contemporary development endeavors such as coaching, "action learning," and assessment centers. Although …

A Training Framework And Follow-Up Observations For Multiculturally Inclusive Teaching: Is Believing That We Are Emphasizing Diversity Enough?, Joelle D. Elicker, Mindi N. Thompson, Andrea F. Snell, Allison L. O'Malley

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

The authors present a theoretically and empirically grounded training for multiculturally inclusive teaching for new instructors. After implementing this training, qualitative data were gathered from instructors to identify their experience of the training and concerns related to incorporating issues of diversity into their classrooms (Study 1). At the end of the semester immediately following the training, quantitative data were gathered from instructors and their students to examine the interaction between students’ and instructors’ perceived diversity emphasis (Study 2). When allowed to choose the extent to which they incorporated issues of diversity in their classes, the instructors differentially reported emphasizing diversity …

The Effect Of Mental Models On Creating Organizational Alignment Around A Change Vision, William A. Brantley Jan 2009

The Effect Of Mental Models On Creating Organizational Alignment Around A Change Vision, William A. Brantley

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The communication of an organizational change vision is a key to the success of organizational transformation. Theorists have prescribed models of how to make change vision communication successful but these models have no empirical data to support them. The purpose of this study was to explore the efficacy of change agents in communicating a change vision that compels employees to accept a perception of reality (mental model) that aligned with the change agents' vision. A case study of the merger of two metropolitan agencies was conducted to examine the relationship between the communication of a change vision and its effect …

Tilting The Balance Between Capital And Labor? The Effects Of Regulatory Arbitrage In European Corporate Law On Employees, Martin Gelter Jan 2009

Tilting The Balance Between Capital And Labor? The Effects Of Regulatory Arbitrage In European Corporate Law On Employees, Martin Gelter

Fordham International Law Journal

This Article examines an issue of regulatory competition that seems to be of greater interest for the corporate governance of large, publicly traded firms: the position of the employees. The Article proceeds in three parts. Part I sets out the basic premise of the analysis by describing why employees may be relevant to the corporate governance structure. This Part will briefly draw on economic theory to explain why, at least under certain circumstances, it can be beneficial to create an institutional structure that facilitates long-term commitment between firms and their employees. Part II identifies aspects of European corporate law that …

Evaluating The Consequences Of Calibrated Sentencing: A Response To Professor Kolber, Miriam H. Baer Jan 2009

Evaluating The Consequences Of Calibrated Sentencing: A Response To Professor Kolber, Miriam H. Baer

Faculty Scholarship

This is a Response to Adam Kolber's essay, The Subjective Experience of Punishment, 109 Colum. L. Rev. 182 (2009). Kobler criticizes courts for failing to take into account subjective experience of punishment when imposing sentences for criminal conduct. Kolber contends that the failure to calibrate punishment to reflect subjective experience undermines both retributivist and consequentialist arguments for punishment.

This Response grapples with the consequentialist implications of Kolber's argument. Specifically, it argues that calibrated sentencing may be far less desirable than its logical alternative, calibrated policing. Indeed, many would say that we already distribute police resources based on our estimation of …

Total Quality Management And Hoshin Kanri For Construction Organizations, Low Sui Pheng, Liu Jun Ying, Amos Cheong Jan 2009

Total Quality Management And Hoshin Kanri For Construction Organizations, Low Sui Pheng, Liu Jun Ying, Amos Cheong

Business Review

Quality trends in construction projects have advanced from quality assurance to quality management under the ISO 9000 standards. Having achieved ISO 9000 certification and established a systematic approach to operations, the journey towards Total Quality Management (TQM) seems to weigh significantly on the ability of an organization to translate, integrate and institutionalize TQM behaviour into its business culture. More importantly, there is a need for organizational-wide management and a need to provide alignment of processes and people in the TQM environment. The Japanese concept of Hoshin Kanri, a form of policy management which prescribes a participative way of quality management, …
