The Limits Of Paternalism: A Case Study Of Welfare Reform In Wisconsin, Thomas S. Moore, Swarnjit S. Arora Sep 2009

The Limits Of Paternalism: A Case Study Of Welfare Reform In Wisconsin, Thomas S. Moore, Swarnjit S. Arora

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This paper uses a pooled sample constructed from the Food Stamp Quality Control data for the fiscal years 1993 to 2006 to assess the effects of welfare reform upon the employment, earnings, income, and poverty trends among poor, single-mother families, both in Wisconsin and nationwide. It finds that the employment and earnings gains of the Wisconsin families exceed those of comparable families nationwide. However, there has been no significant change in the average income of the Wisconsin families, and the number of extremely poor families has increased more rapidly in Wisconsin than in the country as a whole. These findings …

Pregnant And Poor In The Suburb: The Experiences Of Economically Disadvantaged Women Of Color With Prenatal Services In A Wealthy Suburban County, Linda E. Francis, Candyce S. Berger, Marianne Giardini, Carolyn Steinman, Karina Kim Sep 2009

Pregnant And Poor In The Suburb: The Experiences Of Economically Disadvantaged Women Of Color With Prenatal Services In A Wealthy Suburban County, Linda E. Francis, Candyce S. Berger, Marianne Giardini, Carolyn Steinman, Karina Kim

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study explores the perinatal care experiences of disadvantaged women of color in a wealthy U.S. suburb. The women were asked to discuss the availability of health and social services during pregnancy, continuity of provider and/or treatment, communication issues with their providers, and the amount and type ofsupport and resources available. Many of the questions covered in literature on urban poverty emerged as well in this suburban sample, including economic and psychosocial barriers, and continuity and communication issues between low-income/minority women and providers of health and social services. Additional barriers in the suburbs were also discussed, including problems of access …

Genetic Population Structure Analysis In New Hampshire Reveals Eastern European Ancestry, Chantel D. Sloan, Angeline D. Andrew, Eric J. Duell, Scott M. Williams, Margaret R. Karagas, Jason H. Moore Sep 2009

Genetic Population Structure Analysis In New Hampshire Reveals Eastern European Ancestry, Chantel D. Sloan, Angeline D. Andrew, Eric J. Duell, Scott M. Williams, Margaret R. Karagas, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Genetic structure due to ancestry has been well documented among many divergent human populations. However, the ability to associate ancestry with genetic substructure without using supervised clustering has not been explored in more presumably homogeneous and admixed US populations. The goal of this study was to determine if genetic structure could be detected in a United States population from a single state where the individuals have mixed European ancestry. Using Bayesian clustering with a set of 960 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) we found evidence of population stratification in 864 individuals from New Hampshire that can be used to differentiate the …

A Study Of The Nutritional Behavior And Body Mass Indexes For Students Of Age (17-25) Years In Baghdad, Iraq., Ibtisam A.H. Salih

Baghdad Science Journal

The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional status for samples at the age of 17-15 years. These samples were taken from secondary schools and universities in Baghdad area, 123 of them were male and 261 were female. Data on weight, height and body mass index (BMI) were determined in each individual. Smaller sample of 215 individuals (male and female) from the original sample was taken in order to record their nutritional behavior and daily food intake during the 24 hours prior to the visit through personal meeting using special questionnaire. The results showed that the weight and …

Auditing Income Inequality Data In Models Of Capitalism, Development And Democracy, Ross E. Burkhart Sep 2009

Auditing Income Inequality Data In Models Of Capitalism, Development And Democracy, Ross E. Burkhart

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

It is appropriate to take stock of extant measures of income inequality as they pertain to their utility in cross-national models of political and economic performance. Are some measures more reliable and valid than others? What about data coverage, conceptual mapping of similar indicators, functional form specification matters? This paper specifies models of cross-national democratic and economic performance, with common, industry-standard variables such as economic growth and development level, globalization, political culture (colonialism, ethnicity, religion), and economic type (world-system), and insert various measures of income inequality (Hoover, Deininger and Squire, Galbraith, and UNU-WIDER). The intent is to compare and contrast …

Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs Sep 2009

Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs

Dairy Science

Restricted feeding and highconcentratediets are potential strategies for growing dairyheifers. Ruminal manipulation with additives such as Saccharomyces cerevisiaeyeastculture (YC) has been shown to alter digestibility when added to this type of diet. An experiment was conducted to investigate the ruminal fermentation and in situ digestibility of diets with 3 different levels of forage to concentrate (F:C) fed at restricted intake without and with YC addition. Three cannulated post-pubertal Holstein heifers (age 18.0 ± 1.2 months; body weight 449.6 ± 19.7 kg) were feddiets consisting of corn silage as the sole forage source in a 3 period (35-day) Latin square …

Complementary And Alternative Medicine (Cam) Use In Pediatric Oncology: A New Horizon Or Costly Myth?, Justin Roesch, Mark Holdsworth, Stuart Winter, Dennis Raisch

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) are increasingly being utilized in the pediatric cancer population, despite unproven risks and benefits, and significant additional cost of treatment. Objective: To identify the prevalence of CAM use and the most frequently utilized CAMs, and to examine the physiologic impact of CAM in pediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Additional objectives included identifying the cost associated with CAM, and the rationale for CAM usage.

Ethnic Differences In Dysmorphic Features Among Children With Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, Philip May, Phillip Gossage, Matthew Smith, Barbara Tabachnick, Luther Robinson, Melanie Manning, Mauro Cecanti, Jones Lyons, Denis Viljoen, Nathaniel Khaole, David Buckley, Wendy Kalberg, Eugene Hoyme

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Children adversely affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol display a continuum of dysmorphic features, behavioral and neuropsychological deficits best termed fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Alcohol exposure during critical stages of central nervous system and midfacial development leads to the observed pattern. Recent research on FASD focuses increasingly on quantifying physical traits (including head circumference, palpebral fissure length, philtrum length, morphology of the philtrum and vermilion border of the upper lip) and comparing them to specific neurocognitive findings. Various standards and cut-off points have been used by dysmorphologists to determine which of the structural features of children prenatally exposed to …
