Patterns Of Affiliation And Agonism In A Ringtailed Lemur, , Society: Tests Of The Socioecological Model And Other Hypotheses, Gena Christine Sbeglia Sep 2009

Patterns Of Affiliation And Agonism In A Ringtailed Lemur, , Society: Tests Of The Socioecological Model And Other Hypotheses, Gena Christine Sbeglia

Theses

Efforts to understand the variation in primate social systems and the underlying social interactions have focused on both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. In the socioecological model, food distribution and abundance have been argued to be the primary influences on the social relationships and resulting social organization of primate groups. In the first part of this study, I examined the relationship of food and three additional factors (kinship, proximity, previous agonism) with patterns of affiliative and agonistic interactions in two semi-free ranging ringtailed lemur, , social groups (n=14) at Duke Lemur Center in Durham, NC. Affiliation and high intensity agonism patterns …

Maternally Derived Antibodies In Avian Eggs And Offspring: Ecology, Life History, And Development, Brianne Ashley Addison Sep 2009

Maternally Derived Antibodies In Avian Eggs And Offspring: Ecology, Life History, And Development, Brianne Ashley Addison

Dissertations

Mothers can alter offspring phenotypes through a variety of indirect effects, including the deposition of nutrients, hormones, and defense proteins in to the egg. Defense proteins, and antibodies in particular, may be tremendously important for neonatal defense against pathogens and the direction of resources into growth rather than immune responsiveness. Moreover, maternally derived immunoglobulins have been proposed to have an imprinting effect on the development of humoral immunity. In my dissertation, I explored a variety of ecological, life history, and developmental factors that could contribute to the evolution of yolk antibody allocation in a variety of avian species. In the …

From Mueller To Miller: Determining Standards For Decisions Regarding Critically Ill Newborns, Tanaz Farzan Danialifar Sep 2009

From Mueller To Miller: Determining Standards For Decisions Regarding Critically Ill Newborns, Tanaz Farzan Danialifar

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

FROM MUELLER TO MILLER: DETERMINING STANDARDS FOR DECISIONS REGARDING CRITICALLY ILL NEWBORNS. Tanaz Farzan Danialifar (Sponsored by Geoffrey Miller). Section of Neurology, Department of Pediatrics, Yale University, School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. The controversy surrounding selective nontreatment of critically ill newborns has been ongoing for over three decades. Since ancient times ill, premature, or deformed infants have been treated discriminatorily, and infanticide has been a historically acceptable practice. With medical, moral, and legal progress, infanticide has disappeared and been replaced with selective nontreatment. This raises new ethical concerns such as best interests, quality of life, wrongful life, and parental …

A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch Sep 2009

A Role For Rage System Activation In Preterm Birth, Margaret Ann Baumbusch

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

The receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) is a multiligand pattern recognition receptor involved in transducing endogenous damage associated stimuli into inflammatory responses. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), HMGB1 (amphoterin) and S100 proteins, such as S100B, are prototype RAGE ligands, while soluble RAGE (sRAGE), a product of RAGE activation, acts as a ligand scavenger and RAGE inhibitor. We propose that RAGE may play important yet distinct pathogenic roles in both inflammation-induced preterm birth and preeclampsia and that, while inflammation-induced preterm birth associates with fetal RAGE activation, preeclampsia induces a maternal state of RAGE activation. We sought to identify the …

Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes Sep 2009

Literary Bodies: The Novel As Experience, Britt Dienes

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

For my MA thesis I propose to examine a series of novels that combine motifs of the body with structural and linguistic experimentation that parallels the state of the bodies within the text. Using Tsitsi Dangarembga's 1988 "bodybildungsroman" Nervous Conditions, Sherley Anne Williams' 1986 neo -slave narrative Dessa Rose, Samuel Beckett's 1938 existential novel Murphy, Vikram Seth's 1986 poetic novel Golden Gate, and Vladimir Nabokov's 1962 poetic novel Pale Fire, I will argue that these texts portray the body as a readable space of culture, a legible site of conflict or creation.

I contend that these novels …

Neoliberalism And Dependence: A Case Study Of The Orphan Care Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Christine Concetta Gibson Sep 2009

Neoliberalism And Dependence: A Case Study Of The Orphan Care Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Christine Concetta Gibson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Scholars have examined the impacts of neoliberal policies on women, children, small farmers and more, but little attention has been paid to the impact of these policies on orphans. The issue of orphan care is crucial now, and will become increasingly more urgent in the future. Even as HIV/AIDS rates are on the decline, more and more children are being orphaned by the disease. This paper examines the policies, positions and language of the World Bank and I.M.F. regarding orphans in order to understand the biases and assumptions within neoliberalism about orphans, and who is responsible for providing care for …
