Seasonal Changes In Condition, Hepatosomatic Index And Parasitism In Sterlet (Acipenser Ruthenus L.), Mirjana Lenhardt, Ivan Jaric, Predrag Cakic, Gorcin Cvijanovic, Zoran Gacic, Jelena Kolarevic Jan 2009

Seasonal Changes In Condition, Hepatosomatic Index And Parasitism In Sterlet (Acipenser Ruthenus L.), Mirjana Lenhardt, Ivan Jaric, Predrag Cakic, Gorcin Cvijanovic, Zoran Gacic, Jelena Kolarevic

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Measurements of biomarker responses in fish from contaminated sites could provide valuable data for environmental risk assessment. Biomarkers are sensitive to both environmental pollution and confounding factors that are not related to pollution (e.g., season, nutritional status, and population density). Unfortunately, data about the latter group are scarce. Therefore, juvenile sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) specimens were collected on a monthly basis from the Danube River from September 2002 through August 2003 to determine if seasonal changes exist in condition, hepatosomatic index, and parasitism. Fulton condition factor (FCF range: 0.27 - 0.79), hepatosomatic index (HSI range: 1.14 - 6.67) and Skrjabinopsolus …

Growth Response Of Yearling Buffalo Male Calves To Different Dietary Energy Levels, Homayoun Mahmoudzadeh, Hassan Fazaeli Jan 2009

Growth Response Of Yearling Buffalo Male Calves To Different Dietary Energy Levels, Homayoun Mahmoudzadeh, Hassan Fazaeli

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

To evaluate different levels of energy for optimum growth in Iranian regional buffalo male calves, a completely randomized study was conducted, using 27 yearling buffalo male calves with initial live weight of 201 ± 14 kg. Three diets were formulated to provide 90%, 100%, and 110% energy level requirements equivalent to those of steers derived from NRC beef cattle recommendations and they were fed ad libitum for 2 consecutive 90 day trial periods where the crude protein was 11.2% in the first and 10.22% in the second period. Dry matter intake of the high energy diets was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than those with lower energy contents in both periods. At both stages, daily gain was higher (P < 0.05) and feed conversion ratio improved when the animals received NRC recommended energy diets. There were no significant differences between treatments for the carcass traits with exception of abdominal fat, which was significantly affected by the energy levels (P < 0.05). It can be concluded that the optimum growth rate of buffalo male calves may be obtained by providing the NRC beef cattle standard dietary metabolizable energy from yearling to 18 months of age.

Impact Of Media Exposure, Ethnicity And Body Mass Index On The Body Image Of College Women, Shannon Wong

Master's Theses and Capstones

The current thesis project sought to analyze the following three problems: (1) the relationship between media exposure and body image, (2) the relationship between body image and media exposure to determine if there are racial group differences, and (3) the relationship between body image, Body Mass Index and media exposure.

Eighty-one females participated in this study, recruited from two large public northeastern universities. The results of the study show a significant negative correlation between media exposure and measures of body image. There were no significant differences found between Caucasian and non-Caucasian women for media exposure. Based on the results, magazines …

The purpose of this study is to explore this concept and its experience from the perspective of those who claim to be experts on such a topic.

The Influence Of Familism On Descriptive And Injunctive Norms In Predicting The Intention To Eat A Vegetarian Diet Among Chinese Seventh-Day Adventists, See Wei Toh Jan 2009

The Influence Of Familism On Descriptive And Injunctive Norms In Predicting The Intention To Eat A Vegetarian Diet Among Chinese Seventh-Day Adventists, See Wei Toh

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

According to the theory of planned behavior (TpB), one determinant of intention to engage in a behavior is the subjective norm. Various studies have found that subjective norm is often the weaker predictor of intention compared to perceived behavioral control and attitude. This study examined whether familism (emphasis on the family rather than the individual) would contribute positively to the predictive power of the TpB model through interactions with the family portion of descriptive and injunctive norms. Descriptive and injunctive norms are component variables of the subjective norm. A sample of 284 adult Chinese Seventh-day Adventists 18 years and older …

Size Of Food Packaging And Cognitive Performance, Shannon Henry Jan 2009

Size Of Food Packaging And Cognitive Performance, Shannon Henry

Honors Theses

Many factors have been shown to affect individuals' cognitive performance, such as sleepiness, hunger, motivation, etc. One such factor that has recently gained much attention is self-regulation, or one's ability to control, regulate, or change his or her behaviors. In lay terms, self-regulation may be thought of more or less as self-control. Together, this researchon self-regulation suggests that it is a limited resource, which, when depleted in one area, reduces self-regulationability across other areas. Many past studies regarding self-regulation have incorporated food as a way to deplete self-regulation. In particular, the size of food packaging may be a way to …

Development And Evaluation Of An Effective Process For The Recovery Of Oil And Detoxification Of Meal From Jatropha Curcas, Sarthak Gaur Jan 2009

Development And Evaluation Of An Effective Process For The Recovery Of Oil And Detoxification Of Meal From Jatropha Curcas, Sarthak Gaur

Masters Theses

"There has been significant research on biofuels to ensure national security and economic stability of the US. Jatropha curcas, a hardy plant, holds tremendous potential as a biodiesel source and cattle feed-stock largely due to its high triglyceride and crude protein content. However, its viable economic utilization is limited due to the presence of important toxic compounds, phorbol esters. A novel and efficient process has been developed that obtains high yields of jatropha oil and detoxifies the defatted (oil free) jatropha meal. Principles of solid-liquid extraction were utilized to detoxify the meal and then liquid chromatography was employed to analyze …

Cadmium-Mediated Rescue From Er-Associated Degradation Induces Expression Of Its Exporter, David J. Adle, Wenzhong Wel, Nathan Smith, Joshua J. Bles, Jaekwon Lee Jan 2009

Cadmium-Mediated Rescue From Er-Associated Degradation Induces Expression Of Its Exporter, David J. Adle, Wenzhong Wel, Nathan Smith, Joshua J. Bles, Jaekwon Lee

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Cadmium is a highly toxic environmental contaminant that has been implicated in various disorders. A major mechanism for cadmium detoxification in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae relies on extrusion via Pca1, a P-type ATPase. While an N-terminal degron targets Pca1 for degradation before its secretion to the plasma membrane, cadmium in the growth media rapidly upregulates Pca1 by preventing its turnover. Here we show that the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) system, known for its role in quality control of secretory proteins, is unexpectedly responsible for the regulation of Pca1 expression by cadmium. Direct cadmium sensing at the ER by a degron …

Impairment Of D-Alanine Biosynthesis In Mycobacterium Smegmatis Determines Decreased Intracellular Survival In Human Macrophages, Ofelia Barletta-Chacon, Luiz E. Bermudez, Denise K. Zinniel, Harpreet K. Chahal, Robert J. Fenton, Zhengyu Feng, Kathryn J. Hanford, L. Garry Adams, Raúl G. Barletta

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

D-alanine is a structural component of mycobacterial peptidoglycan. The primary route of d-alanine biosynthesis in eubacteria is the enantiomeric conversion from l-alanine, a reaction catalyzed by d-alanine racemase (Alr). Mycobacterium smegmatis alr insertion mutants are not dependent on d-alanine for growth and display a metabolic pattern consistent with an alternative pathway for d-alanine biosynthesis. In this study, we demonstrate that the M. smegmatis alr insertion mutant TAM23 can synthesize d-alanine at lower levels than the parental strain. The insertional inactivation of the alr gene also decreases the intracellular survival of mutant strains within primary human monocyte-derived macrophages. By complementation studies, …

Key Factors For Successful Export Performance For Small Firms, Lance Eliot Brouthers, George Nakos, John Hadjimarcou, Keith D. Brouthers Jan 2009

Key Factors For Successful Export Performance For Small Firms, Lance Eliot Brouthers, George Nakos, John Hadjimarcou, Keith D. Brouthers

Faculty Articles

What key factors result in superior export performance for small firms from small countries? Drawing on the internationalization process model and organizational learning theory, the authors hypothesize and find that (1) emphasizing international sales while (2) restricting exports to a few foreign markets results in superior perceived export performance for the sample of small firms from Greece and several Caribbean countries. Emphasizing international sales while focusing on a few markets enables small firms to develop expertise in those markets, build strong distribution networks, and manage export activities effectively.

Diagnosing Crop And Pasture Problems With Detective Doug, Doug Sawkins Jan 2009

Diagnosing Crop And Pasture Problems With Detective Doug, Doug Sawkins

Bulletins 4000 -

There are numerous publications for diagnosing crop and pasture growth problems. Although they are excellent for experienced people, they can be time consuming and possibly misleading for the less experienced.

Many guidebooks assume that the user has already decided that their problem falls into the category covered by their particular guidebook, for example, a disease, pest or herbicide problem.

Guidebooks are often based on plant symptoms. However, in the field, symptoms vary and different problems can have similar symptoms.

This bulletin presents a problem diagnosis method that uses plant symptoms and paddock clues. It can be used to draw up …

The Omega-3 Fatty Acid Content Of Krill Protein Concentrate Influences Bioavailability, Tissue Deposition, Peroxidation, And Metabolism In Young Rats, Kayla Marie Bridges Jan 2009

The Omega-3 Fatty Acid Content Of Krill Protein Concentrate Influences Bioavailability, Tissue Deposition, Peroxidation, And Metabolism In Young Rats, Kayla Marie Bridges

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Objective. Krill protein concentrate (KPC) has been determined to be a high quality protein for human consumption with the advantage of being a rich source of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (o-3 PUFAs), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The o-3 PUFAs in krill are mainly associated with phospholipids, which have been proposed to result in high incorporation of o-3 PUFAs into tissues and to be stable against oxidation. The study objective was to determine bioavailability, tissue deposition, peroxidation, and metabolism of o-3 PUFAs in rats fed KPC.;Methods. Young female Sprague-Dawley rats (n=10/group) were fed ad libitum isocaloric diets …

Raising Children The American Way: Court-Mandated Parenting Education In Alameda, California, Nicole D. Laborde Jan 2009

Raising Children The American Way: Court-Mandated Parenting Education In Alameda, California, Nicole D. Laborde

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Based on ethnographic research in Alameda County, California, this dissertation examines the parenting practices and knowledge that are taught in court-mandated parenting classes along with those of parents enrolled in these classes. In California, two of the primary reasons that parents would be mandated to take classes are because of involvement with Child and Family Services (CFS) or in a custody dispute that reaches the courts. I argue that the different forms of knowledge and the practices advanced in the classes, at times consistent with, at times in conflict with those of the parents, reflect the demands and social responsibility …
