Antibacterial Activity Of Seed Extracts Of Commercial And Wild Lathyrus Species, Noor Afshan Khan, Sadaf Quereshi, Akhilesh Pandey, Ashutosh Srivastava
Turkish Journal of Biology
Butanolic extract of seeds from 2 different Lathyrus species (Lathyrus ratan [commercial variety] and L. aphaca [wild variety]), were investigated for their in vitro antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity against plant and human pathogenic bacteria was evaluated on the basis of inhibition zones (IZs) measured by disc diffusion method. The maximum inhibition was shown by L. ratan against the gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. L. aphaca seeds also showed inhibition but were inactive against Klebsiella pneumoniae. L. ratan extract was more active than L. aphaca. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for both the seeds (in …

Kala Zeera (Bunium Persicum Bioss.): A Kashmirian High Value Crop, Parvez Ahmad Sofi, N. A. Zeerak, Parmeet Singh
Turkish Journal of Biology
Kala zeera is a high value, low volume, and under-exploited spice crop that grows in mountainous regions of Kashmir in the Himalayas. It has received very little attention in terms of development, standardization of production technology, and plant protection management practices. Sher-e Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST-K) and other organizations have instituted programs for systematic improvement of Kala zeera. In this paper, we offer a synopsis of the latest work being done in promoting this high value crop, which would have a beneficial effect for the encouragement of economic activity in the Himalayas.

Moving Over Mountains: A Woman On The Appalachian Trail, Jessica Susan Matthews
Moving Over Mountains: A Woman On The Appalachian Trail, Jessica Susan Matthews
LSU Master's Theses
This project examines the experience of a woman on the Appalachian Trail. It is my aim in undertaking this project to evaluate my own personal experiences in order to explore the way the Appalachian Trail is conceptualized as a space, and then experienced as a place. My own experiences will be connected to and contrasted by experiences I have with other hikers. It is through my own experiences and those of others that I hope to highlight the ways that spaces and mobilities are gendered in our society and the ways that those expectations are usurped. The wilderness might be …

The Antimicrobial Efficacy And Structure Activity Relationship Of Novel Carbohydrate Fatty Acid Derivatives Against Listera Spp. And Food Spoilage Microorganisms, Patricia Nobmann, Aoife Smith, Julie Dunne, Gary Henehan, Paula Bourke
Articles
Novel mono-substituted carbohydrate fatty acid (CFA) esters and ethers were investigated for their antibacterial activity against a range of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria focussing on Listeria monocytogenes. Carbohydrate derivatives with structural differences enable comparative studies on the structure/activity relationship for antimicrobial efficacy and mechanism of action. The antimicrobial efficacy of the synthesized compounds was compared with commercially available compounds such as monolaurin and monocaprylin, as well as the pure free fatty acids, lauric acid and caprylic acid, which have proven antimicrobial activity. Compound efficacy was compared using an absorbance based broth microdilution assay to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), …

The Modification, System Software Development, Validation, And Clinical Trial Of A Novel Ankle Stiffness Testing Device, T. Tyler Clement
LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this project is to modify, validate, and gather preliminary clinical data on a novel ankle stiffness device that measures stiffness (torque / degree) and range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint complex (AJC). The initial device was designed by a mechanical engineering design group at Louisiana State University in 2006, but had not been tested on human participants. Clinical evaluation of the ankle joint is important in patients afflicted with diabetes mellitus, Hansen’s disease, or peripheral neuropathies. The combination of peripheral neuropathies, decreased ankle range of motion, and increased stiffness pose a threat to these patients, …
The Hyperinsulinemia-Hyperleptinemia Syndrome In Horses: Assessment Of Methods Of Diagnosis And Differential Effects Of Insulin Injection On Glucose, Glucagon And Nonesterified Fatty Acids In Plasma, Thomas Joseph Caltabilota
LSU Master's Theses
Plasma leptin concentrations in horses have been shown to vary widely. However, many factors may perturb these measurements. Previous research has documented a link between hyperinsulinemia and hyperleptinemia in horses. This condition has been speculated to be associated with components of equine metabolic syndrome, such as insulin resistance and laminitis. However, many of the methods accepted in diagnosing these metabolic abnormalities are expensive and often difficult to perform. Thus, the objectives of the experiments in this thesis were 1) to determine if it is possible to differentiate hyperleptinemic horses from normal ones by hormone manipulation with dexamethasone, a glucocorticoid analog; …

The Effect Of Elevated Homocysteine On The Expression Of Cadherins 6b, 7, And 11 In Migrating Neural Crest Cells Of Chick Embryos, Chelsea L. Reinhard
Honors Program Theses
Following neurulation in the chick embryo, the pleuripotent neural crest cells (NCC) migrate from the dorsal neural tube to form a variety of tissues, including the dorsal root ganglia, craniofacial cartilage, melanocytes, and the adrenal medullae. Type II cadherins, calcium-dependent mesenchymal cell adhesion molecules, are expressed in NCCs prior to and during migration, including a period of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Among teratogenic substances known to cause congenital malformations, including heart and neural tube defects, which involve NCCs, homocysteine (Heys) is a natural blood amino acid known to disrupt EMT. The purpose of this thesis was to study the effect of …

A Connective Ethnography Of Peer Knowledge Sharing And Diffusion In A Tween Virtual World, Deborah A. Fields, Y. B. Kafai
Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications
Prior studies have shown how knowledge diffusion occurs in classrooms and structured small groups around assigned tasks yet have not begun to account for widespread knowledge sharing in more native, unstructured group settings found in online games and virtual worlds. In this paper, we describe and analyze how an insider gaming practice spread across a group of tween players ages 9–12 years in an after-school gaming club that simultaneously participated in a virtual world called Whyville.net. In order to understand how this practice proliferated, we followed the club members as they interacted with each other and members of the virtual …

This paper examines the commodification of hunting practices via the deterritorializing function of capitalism described by Deleuze and Guattari. It also studies counter trends-- predicted by or consistent with Deleuzean theory--that indicate a subtending authenticity displayed by certain hunting practices apparently resistant to commercial exploitation. "Blood culture" is my term for inauthentic hunting activity--a distinction drawn directly by Deleuze in his televised interviews with Claire Parnet. Aspects of "becoming-animal" and other transversal and cross-disciplinary flows of thought are also of course in play. As in some of my former work, I again argue for a Deleuzean cultural mechanics of the …

The Thrifty Gene Hypothesis: Considering The Significance Of A 47-Year Old Theory, William Graham
The Thrifty Gene Hypothesis: Considering The Significance Of A 47-Year Old Theory, William Graham
Quill & Scope
The thrifty gene hypothesis suggests that a unique genetic profile passed down from our hunter-gatherer predecessors has contributed to the increased incidence of diabetes and obesity in particular Western populations. This highly contentious theory has been met with both support and skepticism from the research community. Debate surrounding the identification of particular 'thrifty genes has been ongoing, and alternative theories have been presented to debunk or refute the hypothesis. I argue that such discussions have distracted from the understanding of the significance of the hypothesis, and propose some alternative options for settling the debate.
Media Misinterpretation, James Naples
Media Misinterpretation, James Naples
Quill & Scope
There have been a great number of news articles that focus on clinical health issues that manifest themselves as a result of a faulty genome. The media's interpretation and translation of scientific research aimed at understanding the human genome may be inappropriately presented to the lay public. In its presentation the media seems to have created a public that is unwilling to accept responsibility for their personal health, particularly in regards to the diagnosis of ADHD and obesity. This article explores the ramifications of media influence on public perception of these two diseases.

Towards A Greener Future: Gc-Ms Analysis Of Poly-3-Hydroxybutyrate (P3hb) Content In Panicum Virgatum., Adesh Seuraj
Theses & ETDs
Plastic production has increased markedly over the last hundred years. With greater consumption rates today, than ever before, serious attention to the consequential and fringe effects of the plastic industry has provoked the scientific interests of ecologically minded individuals. A non-polluting alternative is the use of plants to produce plastics that are biodegradable, easily commercialized, and specialized for aesculapian applications. In the formulation of a more benign product, the performance integrity and properties of traditional plastics remains uncompromised. Butanolysis is a primary screening technique for the presence of poly-3- hydroxybutyrate in the early life cycles of a plant. At Metabolix, …

Isolation Of A 3-Methylindole-Producing Bacterium From A Swine Waste Lagoon, Michelle L. Fusting
Isolation Of A 3-Methylindole-Producing Bacterium From A Swine Waste Lagoon, Michelle L. Fusting
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
With an increase in animal production closer to populated areas, odorants from animal waste are a rapidly rising concern. 3-Methylindole (3-MI) is an odorant produced from the biodegradation of L-tryptophan by bacteria in animal waste. Currently, no 3-MI producing bacterium has been isolated from swine waste, and isolation of such an organism would provide insight into production and regulation of 3-MI. Therefore, an experiment was designed to isolate a 3-MI producer based on previous work which indicates the presence of Fe(III) increases 3-MI levels. An Enterococcus sp. was isolated from WKU's primary swine waste lagoon in rich, anaerobic medium plus …

The goal of this work was to assist in overcoming the most important bottlenecks in the biodiesel production chain: to improve the biodiesel production process (oil extraction and esterification) using advanced microwave technologies from traditional and alternative feedstock; and identify the important characteristics of an alternative, high oil yield crop (TT). Dielectric properties of two feedstocks, soybean and rice bran were measured in presence of several solvents at different ratios, temperature and frequency. Results indicated that dielectric properties are ratio, temperature, frequency and solvent type dependent. Quasi-linear relationship using second order logarithmic transformation of the data provided a reliable estimator …
Survivorship, Tunneling And Feeding Behaviors Of Formosan Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) In Response To Trans-Caryophyllene, Qiaoling Qi
LSU Master's Theses
The Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, an invasive species from southern China, is one of the most destructive wood pests in the United States. Presently, termites are managed through chemical control. However, some synthetic chemicals cause serious environmental problems due to their persistence and toxicity. There is growing interest in using natural compounds with low toxicity to mammals to control termites. Trans-caryophyllene is a component of essential oil found in many flowering plants. It is especially abundant in clove oil. It has also been found to be released from the roots of maize damaged by insects. I investigated caryophyllene …
