A Study Of The Effects Of Parental Involvement On The Success Of Students On A High-Stakes Examination, Jill Ashbaugh Jan 2009

A Study Of The Effects Of Parental Involvement On The Success Of Students On A High-Stakes Examination, Jill Ashbaugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The United States federal government, through the No Child Left Behind Act, is holding schools accountable for students' proficiency on academic standards. However, standards-based curriculum and instruction, along with school-based support and remediation programs, are not enough to help 100 percent of students to reach proficiency. It is imperative that schools work with parents and communities to maximize each child's potential. Children of involved parents tend to exhibit higher educational goals and perform at academically higher rates than those of parents who do not get involved in their education.

The PSSA Parent Partnership is a program that involves parents, teachers, …

The Use Of Relational, Social, And Overt Aggression In Overtly-Aggressive And Non-Overtly-Aggressive Females, Leigh Ann Comstock Jan 2009

The Use Of Relational, Social, And Overt Aggression In Overtly-Aggressive And Non-Overtly-Aggressive Females, Leigh Ann Comstock

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the researcher sought to examine whether differences existed in the use of relational, social, and overt aggression among previously-identified-overtly-aggressive and non-overtly-aggressive female adolescents. Specifically, explored were the relationships among types of aggression (overtly-aggressive and non-overtly-aggressive), age level (middle or high school), and cultural background/ethnicity (Caucasian or non-Caucasian), and the self-reported use of relational aggression, social aggression, and overt aggression. Results revealed that Caucasian, non-overtly-aggressive middle and high school girls use relational aggression more often than Caucasian, overtly-aggressive middle and high school girls, respectively. Similarly, Caucasian, non-overtly-aggressive middle school girls use social aggression more often than Caucasian, overtly-aggressive …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Ovitrap surveillance was initiated for eight continuous weeks to determine the distribution and abundance of Aedes sp. mosquitoes in the University of Malaya campus, Kuala Lumpur, and the impact of meteorological conditions on the Aedes populations. Two study areas within the campus were selected: Varsity Lake and Seventh Residential College. The abundance of Aedes populations in Varsity Lake was indicated by ovitrap index (OI) which ranged from 60.00 - 90.00. The mean number of larvae per ovitrap of Aedes albopictus in Varsity Lake ranged from 11.23 ± 2.42 - 43.80 ± 6.22. On the other hand, the outdoor OI for …

Feeding The World, Challenges And Opportunities For The U.S. Beef Industry, Clint Peck Jan 2009

Feeding The World, Challenges And Opportunities For The U.S. Beef Industry, Clint Peck

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Nobody ever said the beef business was going to be easy. But, who knew even 10 years ago how complicated it would be to raise a calf and get it sent off to market. Few could have predicted there would be raging debates over animal welfare and animal rights or “food vs. fuel.” Not long ago the most intense pressure facing cattle ranchers came while slugging it out for market share with chicken. For 20 years we lost so much market share to a burgeoning and highly-integrated poultry industry that we began shifting the nucleus of the U.S. beef industry …

Bull Management And Nutrition, Julie Walker, George Perry, Russ Daly, Ken Olson Jan 2009

Bull Management And Nutrition, Julie Walker, George Perry, Russ Daly, Ken Olson

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Proper management and nutrition of bulls is essential to ensure cow/calf producers maximize reproductive efficiency and genetic improvement of the calf crop. In addition, the herd bull influences overall herd fertility more than any other single animal, and loss of fertility by a bull can cause substantial loss to a potential calf crop. Each cow produces one calf per year; however, bulls should contribute to the calf crop by 25 to 60 times via siring 25 to 60 calves. Additionally, bulls influence their daughters’ production in the cow herd. Therefore, bull selection can be the most powerful method of genetic …

Nutrition During Gilt Development And Genetic Line Affect Reproductive Rate Through Parity 1, Rodger Johnson, Philip S. Miller, Roman Moreno, Matthew W. Anderson, Jeffrey M. Perkins, Kelsey Rhynalds, Trevor J. Glidden, Donald Mcclure, Thomas Mcgargill

Nebraska Swine Reports

Effects of allowing gilts ad libitum access to feed until breeding age or developing them with 25% energy restriction from 123 days of age to breeding on reproductive success through parity 1 were studied with a total of 639 gilts of two lines that differ in lean growth and reproduction. Gilts of the two lines had common sires, an industry maternal line, but dams were from different populations. One line of gilts, LW x LR, represented standard industry Large White x Landrace cross females. The other gilts, L45X, were daughters of Nebraska selection Line 45 that has been selected 27 …

Post Weaning Management Of Heifer Calves Impacts Average Daily Gain And Feed Efficiency As Pregnant Heifers, D. M. Larson, Tonya L. Meyer, L. A. Stalker, Richard N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Three experiments evaluated replacement heifer development systems and subsequent effects on gain and efficiency of pregnant heifers. In Exp. 1 and 2, were developed grazing corn residue (CR; 422 ± 5 kg) or fed in a dry lot (DL; 446 ± 5 kg) prior to breeding. In Exp. 1, a subset of pregnant heifers (n = 40) were individually fed a diet composed of 90% grass hay (11.7 % CP; DM basis) and 10% of a wet distillers grains plus solubles/straw mixture (21.8 % CP; DM basis) during late gestation. In Exp. 2, 55 pregnant …

Estrous Synchronization Increases Early Calving Frequency, Which Enhances Steer Progeny Value, D. M. Larson, Richard N. Funston Jan 2009

Estrous Synchronization Increases Early Calving Frequency, Which Enhances Steer Progeny Value, D. M. Larson, Richard N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Calving records collected between 2000 and 2008 at the Gudmundsen Sandhills Laboratory, Whitman, NE, were used to determine the effect of estrous synchronization on calving distribution and the impact of time of calving on carcass characteristics. Calves born between 2000 and 2006 resulted from non-synchronized 60 d breeding seasons between 1999 and 2005 (n = 2075). Calves born in 2007 and 2008 resulted from synchronized 45 d breeding seasons in 2006 and 2007 (n = 521). Estrus was synchronized with a single injection of prostaglandin F2α administered 108 h after bulls were turned in with cows. Cow …

The Effects Of Corn Coproduct Supplementation On Primiparous Cow Reproduction And Calf Performance, D. M. Larson, R. N. Funston Jan 2009

The Effects Of Corn Coproduct Supplementation On Primiparous Cow Reproduction And Calf Performance, D. M. Larson, R. N. Funston

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

An experiment was replicated over 2 yr to determine the effect of additional RUP and dietary fat from dried distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS; n = 2) or wet corn gluten feed (WCGF; n = 2) before breeding on primiparous cow reproduction and calf production. Over 2 yr, 134 postpartum, primiparous cows (429 ± 5 kg initial BW) were fed 1 of 2 isocaloric, approximately isonitrogenous diets in 1 pen/yr (n = 4) providing varying levels of RUP and dietary fat. Treatments were initiated 21 (yr 1) and 60 d (yr 2) postpartum and continued for 56 (yr 1) or …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Participatory varietal selection (PVS) led to the identification of Population-22 and its later release as Manakamana-3. Subsequently further mother–baby trials tested five unreleased open-pollinated varieties (OPVs), ZM-621, Shitala, Population-45, Hill Pool White, and Hill Pool Yellow to compare them with Manakamana-3. Farmers again preferred Manakamana-3 as well as ZM-621 for their stable, higher grain yield, and for other traits such as stay-green, non-lodging, large white grains, and tolerance to foliar diseases. However, Manakamana- 3 and ZM-621 both had late maturity, open husks and dented grain. Both were tested with farmers on-farm coordinated farmers field trials (CFFTs) and had not been …

What Works Is Work: Welfare Reform And Poverty Reduction, Ron Haskins Jan 2009

What Works Is Work: Welfare Reform And Poverty Reduction, Ron Haskins

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

This is an essay about how the 1996 welfare reform law and other policies contributed to the sharpest decline in child poverty since the early 1970s. The story is told in the context of the nation's long struggle to reduce poverty and the factors that have made it so difficult to make progress against poverty. These factors involve both forces over which individuals have little or no control and factors over which they have almost complete control. Such factors include the problems with child poverty, male non-work, education rates, and the influx of low-skilled immigrants. To a large extent, the …
