Gestational Diabetes And Its Effects On The Fetus, Todd Pollack Jan 2009

Gestational Diabetes And Its Effects On The Fetus, Todd Pollack

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Although the common effects of gestational diabetes on the fetus are known, the outcome of a diabetic gestation is ambiguous. There is concern for complications in the fetus at delivery due to enlarged size of the fetus, as well as concerns for birth defects, fetal distress, diabetes and obesity. Yet, although there is a correlation in the previous disorders and gestational diabetes, many of the mechanisms that cause these complications are unknown. By studying the pathology of gestational diabetes, researchers have learnt that the placenta controls fetal growth and provides a great deal of protection for the fetus. Therefore, many …

Gene Pool Organization, Population Genetics And Wild-Crop Complex Dynamics Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata), Eric Bertrand Kouam Jan 2009

Gene Pool Organization, Population Genetics And Wild-Crop Complex Dynamics Of Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata), Eric Bertrand Kouam

All PhD Dissertations

Cowpea is a tropical legume contributing significantly to food security in developing countries, especially in Africa. This research project was motivated by the upcoming introduction of Bt cowpea in Africa, likely to disturb the genetic equilibrium existing between wild and cultivated cowpea. The objectives of this study were to assess the genetic relationship between wild and cultivated cowpea, to determine how inbred and how differentiated are cowpea populations as well as gene flow, to estimate the mating system parameters in cowpea and their relation to ecological agents. In order to achieve these goals, wild and cultivated cowpea individuals were electrophoreticafy …

Antioxidant And Anticancer Activities Of Wampee (Clausena Lansium (Lour.) Skeels) Peel, K. Nagendra Prasad, Jing Hao, Chun Yi, Dandan Zhang, Shengxiang Qiu, Yueming Jiang, Mingwei Zhang, Feng Chen Jan 2009

Antioxidant And Anticancer Activities Of Wampee (Clausena Lansium (Lour.) Skeels) Peel, K. Nagendra Prasad, Jing Hao, Chun Yi, Dandan Zhang, Shengxiang Qiu, Yueming Jiang, Mingwei Zhang, Feng Chen

Publications

Antioxidant activities of wampee peel extracts using five different solvents (ethanol, hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water) were determined by using in-vitro antioxidant models including total antioxidant capability, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing power, and superoxide scavenging activity. Ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other fractions, even higher than synthetic antioxidant butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). In addition, the EAF exhibited strong anticancer activities against human gastric carcinoma (SGC-7901), human hepatocellular liver carcinoma (HepG-2) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A-549) cancer cell lines, higher than cisplatin, a conventional anticancer drug. The total phenolic content of …

A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz Jan 2009

A Procedure To Correct Proxy-Reported Weight In The National Health Interview Survey, 1976-2002, Eric N. Reither, Rebecca L. Utz

Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Background

Data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) show a larger-than-expected increase in mean BMI between 1996 and 1997. Proxy-reports of height and weight were discontinued as part of the 1997 NHIS redesign, suggesting that the sharp increase between 1996 and 1997 may be artifactual.

Methods

We merged NHIS data from 1976–2002 into a single database consisting of approximately 1.7 million adults aged 18 and over. The analysis consisted of two parts: First, we estimated the magnitude of BMI differences by reporting status (i.e., self-reported versus proxy-reported height and weight). Second, we developed a procedure to correct biases in …

Relationship Between Virulence And Repellency Of Metarhizium Anisopliae And Beauveria Bassiana Towards Macrotermes Michaelseni And Chemical Identification Of The Mediating Signals, David M. Mburu

All PhD Dissertations

It is not well understood how termites survive in hemiedaphic habitats with diverse array of potentially infective fungi. In the present study, it was initially found that Macrotermes michaelseni detected a virulent isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae from some distance in a specially designed Y-olfactometer and avoided direct physical contact through olfaction. The overall objective of the study was to evaluate the relationship between virulence and repellency of different isolates of M. anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana towards the termite and identify possible mediating signals. The results show an interesting co-evolutionary phenomenon in which the termite's response to either M anisopliae or …

Wintering Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker Time Activity Budgets In East Texas Bottomland Hardwood Forests (Abstract), Jason R. Speights, Warren C. Conway Jan 2009

Wintering Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker Time Activity Budgets In East Texas Bottomland Hardwood Forests (Abstract), Jason R. Speights, Warren C. Conway

Faculty Publications

We developed time-activity budgets for 286 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers (Sphyrapicus varius) from October 2005/2006 to March 2006/2007 in east Texas bottomland hardwood forests. Behaviors were similar between genders and study sites (P > 0.05), but varied (P = 0.008) between years. Sapsuckers spent more time foraging upon arrival in wintering areas and during morning throughout the study periods. Deviation from monthly average low temperature was an important (P = 0.038) covariate during the second study year, when sapsuckers increased time spent foraging during colder than average temperatures and increased time perching on days with warmer than average …

School of Sport & Exercise Science Faculty Publications

Well-being psychology theory (Ryff, 1989) is one of the essential links of positive psychology, which has been mainly framed between two perspectives that explain a model of world and a model of person (Díaz, 2006). Ryff (1989) states her model baptized as “Integrated Model of Personal Development”. Considering that sport, and life cycle sport are activities that demand to be strong, to have superior volitive skills, autonomy, be challenging, set up objectives, meet aims, grow as person, adapt to different environments and changes, and for that purpose, establish positive relationship with the others, be healthy and maintain self control, is …

Induced Hyper And Hypo Aminoacidemia In The Near Term Ovine Fetus: Effects On Electrocortical Activity And Cerebral Protein Synthesis, James Nakahara Maclachlan

Digitized Theses

We have utilized an amino acid infusate and an insulin euglycemic clamp

technique in the ovine fetus near term with increases and decreases in circulating amino acids, respectively, to determine the impact on electrocortical activity and cerebral protein synthesis. Fetal sheep were studied over a 2 hour control and subsequent 6 hour experimental period, during which animals received an infusion of Primene® 10%, or a co-infusion of insulin and 10% dextrose, as well as C13 leucine for determining cerebral protein synthesis. With Primene infusion, basic and neutral amino acids were increased, while acidic amino acids showed little change. With insulin/dextrose …

The Effects Of Early Nutritional Stress On Physiology, Cogniton And Song Production In European Starlings (Sturnus Vulgaris), Tara M. Farrell Jan 2009

The Effects Of Early Nutritional Stress On Physiology, Cogniton And Song Production In European Starlings (Sturnus Vulgaris), Tara M. Farrell

Digitized Theses

Song is a phenotypic expression of male quality. According to the developmental stress hypothesis, birds subjected to stressful environments while their song system is developing should advertise this with a more simple song. The first aim of this study was to investigate whether song learning was reflective of learning abilities in general. The second aim was to determine what underlying physiological systems could be affected by stress early in development that may be responsible for altered song learning. A nutritional stressor was enforced in developing European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) and song learning was measure in addition to learning in general. …

Evaluation Of Pilo Substrate Specificity Using Normally Non-Glycosylated Proteins In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Matthew A. Henkel Jan 2009

Evaluation Of Pilo Substrate Specificity Using Normally Non-Glycosylated Proteins In Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Matthew A. Henkel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

P. aeruginosa 1244 (PA1244) possesses an O-linked glycosylation system by which the glycosyltransferase, PilO, transfers a single preassembled O-antigen repeating unit to the C-terminal serine residue of pilin as a posttranslational modification. Previous work has shown that the group II pilin of PA103 can be engineered for glycosylation by extending a C-terminal serine away from the surface with a short stretch of alanine residues (Horzempa et al., 2006a). As an extension of that study, several normally non-glycosylated proteins [PA683 pilin, PA1244 PilA-E. coli (EC) alkaline phosphatase (PhoA) fusion, and EC PhoA] were engineered with C-terminal amino acid extensions and assessed …

Building The Bottom Up From The Top Down, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2009

Building The Bottom Up From The Top Down, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

"Bottom up" governance. "Self-organization." These are among the most talismanic virtue-words of modern political discourse. Yet the reality is that in politics, "self-organization" is rare, being hard to initiate and even harder to sustain. As Oscar Wilde once complained about socialism, it "requires too many evenings." Governance as we tend to know it depends primarily on hierarchical institutions, or on close coordination within small groups. True partnerships, conversations among engaged equals, do not seem to scale. Indeed, whether one believes the fundamental problem to be something about the economics of group formation, the iron law of oligarchy, or something in …

This study examined an inner-city Catholic high school to ascertain the possible existence of an achievement gap. Pearson correlation and multiple regression analyses examined academic indicators (GPA and Math and Science OGT results) and demographic and school variables. Students (258 Black, 101 White, and 55 Hispanic) completed questionnaires, which were matched with school data and confirmatory alumni focus groups. Analyses revealed no significant differences (ANOVA) among academic indicator means. Correlations were found between academic indicators and length of Catholic education, good behavior, extracurricular participation, high-school-graduation-oriented peers, and teacher caring scores. Regression models found positive student behavior, peers, female gender, extracurricular …

Uncertainty Management Of Intelligent Feature Selection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sanchita Mal-Sarkar Jan 2009

Uncertainty Management Of Intelligent Feature Selection In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sanchita Mal-Sarkar

ETD Archive

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are envisioned to revolutionize the paradigm of monitoring complex real-world systems at a very high resolution. However, the deployment of a large number of unattended sensor nodes in hostile environments, frequent changes of environment dynamics, and severe resource constraints pose uncertainties and limit the potential use of WSN in complex real-world applications. Although uncertainty management in Artificial Intelligence (AI) is well developed and well investigated, its implications in wireless sensor environments are inadequately addressed. This dissertation addresses uncertainty management issues of spatio-temporal patterns generated from sensor data. It provides a framework for characterizing spatio-temporal pattern in …

Student Nurses' Perception Of Death And Dying, Joan E. Niederriter Jan 2009

Student Nurses' Perception Of Death And Dying, Joan E. Niederriter

ETD Archive

Student nurses are involved in caring for patients who are actively dying or who have been told they have a terminal illness and are faced with the process of dying. Students encounter these patients in hospitals, nursing homes, at home or in hospice care settings. According to Robinson (2004), "nurses are the healthcare providers that are most often with individuals at the end of their lives" (p. 89). Nurses should be knowledgeable about end-of-life care. Studies show that only 0.41 of nurses are certified in palliative care (Means to a better end, 2004). Nursing students often have a difficult time …

Biological Treatment Of Dietary Supplement Wastewater, Erick Benjamin Butler Jan 2009

Biological Treatment Of Dietary Supplement Wastewater, Erick Benjamin Butler

ETD Archive

Dietary supplement wastewater contains higher order polysaccharides such as the complex sugars maltodextrin and low fat milk. These complex sugars contain a significant amount of organic carbon therefore, presence of these sugars can pose threats to the environment if discharged without treatment. While many food processing plants are required to send their waste through wastewater treatment, legislation may require preliminary treatment of these wastes in order to satisfy the effluent discharge requirements. Because of the high organic carbon presence, it would be preferable to use biological treatment methods to reduce the organics present within the system. Microorganisms are capable of …

The Case For Participatory Education, Stephen Thornton-Taylor

ETD Archive

Participatory learning or "Participatory Education" as a formal declaration of either ideology or praxis has yet to be written and I would certainly not attempt to write one in the current educational capacity I now find myself in however I have found myself in the unique position of actually being first to something and so have decided to enjoin the relatively scant sketches of, as far as the great blade of written history is concerned, cutting edge economic philosophy with the over-personal, absolutely singular experience of a student-teacher in Cleveland, Ohio. The principles of Participatory Education are adapted from the …
