Group Feeding For The Lactating Cow, Anthony Joseph Martin
Group Feeding For The Lactating Cow, Anthony Joseph Martin
Dairy Science
Feeding individualized rations for lactating dairy cattle in the commercial herd based on dietary needs is a popular issue. This has been a debating topic since evolution of the Total Mixed Ration (TMR). Since dairymen were able to mix grain in a feed wagon and mix a specific dietary ration to meet the demand for an organized group, there has been an issue in which protocol cow pen grouping should take. Dairymen have always feed cattle based on if lactating or late in their gestation, nonlactating. With the evolution of the TMR dairymen are then allowed to go into more …

Animal Science
Zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) is designed to increase carcass leanness, chilled side weight (CSW), and percent saleable yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a single dose of ZH on cutability and subprimal yield of calf-fed Holstein steers when fed for increasing durations. Two hundred forty steers were fed 8.3 mg/kg of ZH on a DM basis for 0, 20, 30, or 40 d, with a 3-d withdrawal before slaughter. After slaughter, steers were fabricated into 4 pieces (round, loin/flank, rib/plate, and chuck), packaged in combos, shipped to 2 locations, and further fabricated into subprimal pieces …
Breast Feeding And Obesity Prevention In Children, Erin J. Kennedy
Breast Feeding And Obesity Prevention In Children, Erin J. Kennedy
International Journal of Global Health and Health Disparities
The focus of this paper is to provide a review of current research regarding the possible protective effect of breast feeding against childhood obesity. This relationship is of importance as the United States is not immune to the obesity epidemic in children (Institute of Medicine, 2008). Over the past 30 years, the childhood obesity rate defined as at or greater than the 95th percentile for age has tripled in children aged 2-5 years old and adolescents aged 12-19 years old, and doubled in children aged 6-11 years old. In 2000, the prevalence of obesity was 10% for age 2-5 year …
Serpentine Geoecology Of Eastern North America: A Review, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Tanner B. Harris, Earl B. Alexander
Serpentine Geoecology Of Eastern North America: A Review, Nishanta Rajakaruna, Tanner B. Harris, Earl B. Alexander
Biological Sciences
Serpentine outcrops are model habitats for geoecological studies. While much attention has been paid to serpentine outcrops worldwide, the literature on eastern North American serpentine and associated biota is scant. This review examines the available literature, published and unpublished, on geoecological studies conducted on serpentine in eastern North America, from Newfoundland through Québec and New England south to Alabama. Most serpentine outcrops in the region have been mapped, but there have been few intensive mineralogical and pedological investigations. The limited soil analyses available suggest elevated levels of heavy metals such as Ni, near-neutral pH values, and Ca∶Mg ratios < 1, characteristic of serpentine soils worldwide. Botanical studies to date have largely focused on floristic surveys and the influence of fire exclusion and grazing on indigenous vegetation. To date, 751 taxa of vascular plants belonging to 92 families have been reported from serpentine outcrops in the region. Two taxa, Agalinis acuta …

An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong
An Analysis Of Education Subsidy In The Presence Of Fertility Decisions, Human Capital Accumulation, And Spillovers, Woan Foong Wong
Honors Papers
The paper hypothesizes that the level of aggregate human capital in an economy affects the overall returns of an individual's human capital accumulation and fertility decision. However, the positive externalities from aggregate human capital are not internalized by households in their investment decisions. Using an overlapping-generations model, specify the household’s optimization problem in a rural developing country where parents have an old-age support motive that underlies the benefits of having and educating children. The optimal decision of parents is then contrasted with that of the social planner. They differ in that the social planner internalizes the externalities of aggregate human …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
Since the discovery of the Marburg and Ebola species of filovirus, seemingly random, sporadic fatal outbreaks of disease in humans and nonhuman primates have given impetus to identification of host tropisms and potential reservoirs. Domestic swine in the Philippines, experiencing unusually severe outbreaks of porcine reproductive and respiratory disease syndrome, have now been discovered to host Reston ebolavirus (REBOV). Although REBOV is the only member of Filoviridae that has not been associated with disease in humans, its emergence in the human food chain is of concern. REBOV isolates were found to be more divergent from each other than from the …

Paradigm Shift, Then And Now: The Shakespearean Winter’S Tale And Renewal Through The Feminine, Judy Schavrien
Paradigm Shift, Then And Now: The Shakespearean Winter’S Tale And Renewal Through The Feminine, Judy Schavrien
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This paper explores postmodern and Shakespearean-baroque parallels in asking, “Can we
make a New World?” In Shakespeare’s case, paradigm shift was occurring willy-nilly—a New
World hoving into view, geographically, socio-politically, spiritually, and through a science
that shifted views of earth and heaven. This inquiry into The Winter’s Tale, in search of a
new coherence then and now, discovers that Shakespeare envisioned a rebalancing of hypermasculine
internal and external life by way of the Feminine, both youthful and mature.
Portraying the tragic ruler at the center of his tale as part puer and part jealous tyrant, Shakespeare
established what is almost …

Bleeding Meckel’S Diverticulum In A 4-Month-Old Infant: Treatment With Laparoscopic Diverticulectomy. A Case Report And Review Of The Literature, J. Rainer Poley, Thomas E. Thielen, Jeffrey C. Pence
Department of Surgery Faculty Publications
A bleeding Meckel’s diverticulum is presented in a 4-month-old African American infant. This event is rare at this age, and our patient is only the second 4-month-old infant reported in the English literature. The infant presented with painless frank rectal bleeding, the blood being maroon-colored, and clots were found in the diaper. There was also anemia, with an hemoglobin of less than 8 gm/dl. The color of the blood suggested a bleeding site in the ileocecal region, a Meckel’s diverticulum was suspected, which was then confirmed by an isotope scan. A typical Meckel’s diverticulum was found on laparoscopic surgery, was …

The 2008 Update Of The Aspergillus Nidulans Genome Annotation: A Community Effort, Jennifer Russo Wortman, Steven D. Harris, Geoffrey Turner, Aspergillus Nidulans Consortium
Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications
The identification and annotation of protein-coding genes is one of the primary goals of whole-genome sequencing projects, and the accuracy of predicting the primary protein products of gene expression is vital to the interpretation of the available data and the design of downstream functional applications. Nevertheless, the comprehensive annotation of eukaryotic genomes remains a considerable challenge. Many genomes submitted to public databases, including those of major model organisms, contain significant numbers of wrong and incomplete gene predictions. We present a community-based reannotation of the Aspergillus nidulans genome with the primary goal of increasing the number and quality of protein functional …

That's Ok, It's Only A Rental: The Business Of Renting Dogs, Rachit Anand
Hofstra Law Student Works
Dogs are an integral part of our society today. While the benefits arising from dog ownership are widely accepted, proper care of a dog is also time consuming and can be expensive. This paper presents the concept of renting dogs as a substitute for permanent dog ownership and specifically details the business practices of Flexpetz, Inc., a for-profit company that provides such a rental service. Given the possibility of negative physical and emotional effects on the dogs that may flow from being involved in a “renting” business, the paper surveys various anti-cruelty and animal welfare laws (Federal, State, and in …
